tv   New Day Cleveland  FOX  November 11, 2016 10:00am-11:00am EST

10:00 am
- welcome to new day cleveland. let me tell you, we today are in one of the most beautiful suburbs of akron. we're about 45 minutes outside of cleveland, situated between route 91 and 303. we are in hudson. i cannot wait to enjoy this day, david and i are going to be go to 10 different places, just some of the stops you're not gonna wanna miss when you come to this great town. our first stop happens to be right here. let's go inside. (upbeat music) well it appears that i'm starting things off with a full stomach
10:01 am
i of course, i bellied up to the bar right away, i mean, this is the way to go when you come here, right? - well certainly, we're glad to have ya. - what, i mean, look at this spread that you have out for us. now, the whole theme, is it southern? - well we're definitely southern-based. - okay. - we try to have a very nice blend between traditional north carolina, atlanta, and new orleans kinda southern, very low country, but we certainly have a lot of things for folks who may not have traveled down south, and are a little tempered in how they diet. people will find that this is definitely unique menu, compared to other restaurants. - for sure, for sure. - so you brought the southern specialties out with you today. - absolutely, i've got a few things here for ya. you can't go to a southern place without chicken and waffles. - i mean, and look at how that is stacked, that is quite a presentation on the chicken and waffles. is this a huge seller? - absolutely, yeah. we did, fried chicken is number one, but chicken and waffles is number two. we have it lunch and dinner, brunch on sunday,
10:02 am
but you can also get it for dinner. - absolutely. - how many days a week are you open then? - we're open six days a week, we're closed on tuesday. for lunch and dinner, you know, monday through saturday, and then we do brunch on sunday. - now can you get these two delicious dishes for brunch too? - shrimp and grits, you can get for brunch. - shrimp and grits. now this looks like i can bite into this and not make a mess out of myself. - absolutely, dig right in. - so we're gonna try some shrimp and grits. - it's a little pickle relish, a little new orleans barbecued shrimp. - mmm, oh that has great flavor to it. - now how long have you been here? - for about two and a half years now. - wow, and this has always been the feel for the menu? - yep, since the day we opened. the menu's changed, we've modified it a little bit, but in general the theme's always stayed the same. - that is unbelievably delicious. before you even explain what this is, how do you eat that? (laughs) - you need the knife. - okay, you definitely need this huge knife with it. - usually a lot of folks need a box.
10:03 am
it is an eight-ounce sirloin with american cheese, it's topped with a four-ounce fried chicken breast, as well as the bacon and aioli, lettuce, tomato, you name it. - woah, oh my gosh. that will definitely leave you full, you might have to unbutton the pants after that one, right? - definitely come hungry. come hungry. - depending on the time of year that you come here, you have a great outdoor area as well. - we sure do. the patio's up and going, a little chilly today, but. - [natalie] oh i would still go out there today. well, speaking of patio, i mean, cocktails is in the name of your restaurant, so i have to imagine the cocktails are not only amazing, but they are one of a kind. what did he just put in front of you? - well, this is, it's got a little cucumber, it's got a little bourbon, it's just another very southern drink, it's got a little lime to it. - that looks extremely refreshing. always double-fisting it on this show. now what is this one i have? because this is the one i really want to try. - that's our blueberry lemonade, so it's tito's vodka, infused with blueberries,
10:04 am
ry summer-y, very comfortable, sit outside kinda drink. - and look how gorgeous it looks too. it's beautiful. and, last but not least, for, i'm guessing, the chocolate lovers. - we've got a chocolate martini, so you can't go wrong. you know, hudson's a martini town, mix a little chocolate with it, everybody's happy. - now when people come, i know that this must be a happening place. - [eric] sure. - [natalie] should they make reservations? can they just walk in? - [eric] well we certainly accept walk-ins, but we also take reservations, so if you're coming in at 7:00 on a saturday, if you're popping in at 2:00 in the afternoon or something, you can definitely walk in and make yourself comfortable. - i love it here. i do think i have to dig in, again, get my stomach a little full before we travel around hudson. in fact, do you know where we're gonna head next? the wine shop, i believe is right across the street. - you can see erin at bienvenue. - yes. we're heading there now. (calm guitar music) - [erin] viva bene just means to live well, in italian.
10:05 am
we love for customers to come in, and whether they're a novice to wine, or they're, you know, someone that has a really advanced collection and they want to round off their wine cellar, we've got everyone all over the board, so it's just a wonderful experience. and then, everything in here, for the most part, is gonna be european, lot of hand-made pastas from italy, and the whole point is finding these great foods and then helping people prepare them really easily at home. so everything in this store you can whip up in 15 minutes, and it will be fabulous. the wine collection is constantly changing. we initially focused on a lot of italian wines, but then we've really started branching out to more california, spanish wines, new zealand, australia, and so it's constantly changing. this gorgeous wine is a merlot by meeker, and what is really special about this,
10:06 am
the color of the thumb print will let you know who the wine-maker was. this one is really interesting. this is a 2012 van duzer pinot noir from the willamette valley. it's absolutely gorgeous, and 2012 was a perfect year, because pinot noir is one of the most difficult grapes to grow, because it has such thin skins, and so it's only gonna grow in certain climates, and this year the van duzer gap in willamette valley so before they're gone, i would highly recommend that you pick up one of these. the difference between us and a big box store is, one, it's not intimidating, it's really easy, and it's fun. and we've got people that are really wine experts over here, and so whether you want to be left alone, or if you want to engage in that conversation, we're happy to do either. and we can start with something as simple as, how do you take your coffee? and go from there.
10:07 am
at you just cannot stand, or what are things that you love? and we can just find something there, really for everybody. everyone here is really food and wine enthusiasts, we have a great time, we have lots of wine tastings and things like that. and i started collecting wine back in my 20s, and i taught myself how to cook in college and everything else, and it just, i reached a point in my life where i had the opportunity to do something very different about five years. i found this gorgeous building, and it just all worked out. this pasta is absolutely gorgeous, these are all hand-made, small batch, organic pastas from (mumbles). they're sofi award winners, and basically what that means is they taste just as good as they look, and they won so many foodie awards. now the color is, it's made from squid ink, but don't let that worry you,
10:08 am
again, bucatini, it's like a thick spaghetti with a hole in it. so if you think about it, this way, this is gonna puff up absolutely beautifully, and the sauce really sticks to the pasta, so it's phenomenal. all of these gorgeous sauces here, these are all from italy as well, so you've got anything from little whole cherry tomatoes to tomato puree, san marzano tomatoes, any kinda sauce that you really wanna make, all you need is right here. we also have some dried sauces as well, that you can mix in with it. y're just absolutely gorgeous, and they also make beautiful gifts as well. the building was built in '87, and it was previously a different business, but it's an octagon, and so you walk in, and everything is light, bright, full of windows. my office is upstairs, so you'll see me peek over the top, and just literally walk in, walk around, just walk around the circle, literally. and you're gonna find tons of foods, and gifts, and wines,
10:09 am
walk around, hang out, enjoy. we do wine samples as well, so if you want a little sip of wine while you shop, do that too. - oh, you caught me. it's just too darn good, i had to sample this. our tour here of hudson is just getting started. after the break, david is heading to a board game and milkshake spot. pretty interesting.
10:10 am
10:11 am
10:12 am
id] welcome back to new day cleveland, yes, we are in hudson, not exactly downtown hudson right now, just a little bit out of town, and when i was a little kid i used to drive by this building. it was red back then i think. it's an eight-sided barn. so now there's something new in here, and i can't figure out what it is, so we're gonna discover this together. it's an odd-ball place called malted meeple. well i'm starting to untangle this mystery right now, of the malted meeple. - [jim] jim reed. - [david] you're jim reed, are you in charge of all these people here? - i think in charge might be a little too strong of a term, but yeah, something like that. - so jim, i remember this barn from when i was a kid, i was telling them outside that this octagon barn, and this is sort of an octagon idea you got here, right? what is the malted meeple? - [jim] well the malted meeple is northeast ohio's first board game cafe, and we strive to give people a great place and a great way to spend quality time with friends and family. we have a library of over 150 board games.
10:13 am
- are these kid's games, adult's games? - these are a little bit of everything. there's actually a huge variety of games, that are called hobby games. it's something that's really popped up in the last ten years or so. we have games that are cooperative, where you may be playing with each other and you all win or lose as a group. we have games that are competitive. there's games for young kids, all the way up to adults. - [david] so young kids come in here also? - [jim] absolutely, we're a family-friendly establishment. - [david] because all these people look like big kids to me. (laughs) the moment, that's true, but we have a lot of families come in, sundays in particular we aim towards families, we have a milkshake madness that we do that the kids love. - [david] you said milkshake. - [jim] i did. - cause i see, i don't know what he's drinking, but i see beer over here i think, right? so we got beer. - [jim] there's some beers over here. we actually have one of our milkshake tasting flights here. - [david] oh great. - we do something we call milkshake madness. every month we come up with three new milkshake flavors, and you can come in and taste the different flavors, and you can vote on your favorite, and whichever one wins becomes
10:14 am
these girls are probably playing this game, what's this game called? - [jim] this is called terror in meeple city. - [david] it looks like a lot of terror at this table. oh we got a beer and milkshakes going on. that's a lovely crew. okay, so i see a bar over here. - [jim] absolutely. - [david] so the place opens at 4:00 during the week? - [jim] during the week we're open from 4:00 to 11:00, fridays we're open from 4:00 until 2:00 a.m., saturday's our big day and we're open from noon til 2:00 a.m., and then sundays from noon until 8:00. - [david] okay, that's a game right there. so here's one of our flights, and what's this big guy doing here? - [jim] he's actually finishing up we have three different sized milkshakes, we have the flight that you see on the left there, our standard size milkshake is the pint glass milkshake, but then if you really want a milkshake, you can get one of these mega milkshakes, which is three shakes large. it's designed for sharing. - [david] so what's it cost for a mega milkshake? - [jim] it's $18 for a standard mega milkshake, but you can do a lot of interesting things to our milkshakes, you can add beer to them, you can add booze to them, you can add all kinds of things to em. - [david] milkshake flavors. how bout that? different ones. - [jim] we actually have 30 flavors
10:15 am
oo, where if we have the ingredients, we can make just about anything you want. - [david] give me a crazy one. - [jim] one of our craziest ones is what we call the red shirt, which is a strawberry lemonade milkshake with angry orchard cider in it. - [david] good. do you ever put beer in a milkshake? - [jim] absolutely, yeah. our chocolate profit is old rasputin, which is a great stout, in a chocolate milkshake, and it is amazing. - how did you ever get this crazy idea to put this together? - well actually, my other business is a country inn in the hocking hills, there's not a lot of things to do there ow, tv or internet, so people love finding something they can do when they're disconnected, and the board games is really what does that, so we figured bring that up here and share it with people in hudson as well. - [david] and how did you get the malted meeple? - [jim] well malted is from both the milkshakes and our craft beers, and meeple is the little token that's in a lot of board games, that looks kind of like a person, they're usually made out of wood. so i put the two of them together and the malted meeple was born. - jim, a beautiful idea, great to meet you. - thank you, it was nice meeting you. - [david] i like your crew. - [jim] thank you. they're a good group of people. - [david] i like your menu. - [jim] thank you.
10:16 am
- you should come back and have some of them. - i'm gonna do that, but right now we're gonna find natalie because i think she's out looking at bath salts or something like that, maybe even candles. check it out. (calming music) - [natalie] you walk into this place and you smell the sweet, delicious scents of gwendolyn elizabeth. this, lisa, is one of the most sweet smelling places i've ever walked to in my life. - [lisa] good, yay. - [natalie] you walk in, you just, it almost just puts you at ease. - [lisa] oh good, i'm really glad to hear that, we've been hearing that from a lot of customers who come in. i think the difference is essential oils. we use essential oils as opposed to some perfumes and things that maybe our competitors might be using. - and when you say your competitors, we're talking about things like candles, soaps. what all do you make here? - [lisa] oh my gosh, lotions, oh gosh, body whips, salt scrubs, massage oil, really everything you'd find in a bath and body shop, we carry here,
10:17 am
and relaxation and so forth. - so there are several different rooms in your shop here, we're in the room that has, i see soaps, i see lotions. is this a huge seller? - [lisa] it is a huge seller, and gwendolyn, our daughter, who's gwendolyn elizabeth that the store's named after, she went through and as we were developing the soap, she came up with names that talked about people that were influential in her life. so this is dr. susie's red clover tea, and it's just, it looks beautiful. - what is this one? this one is unbelievable. lucky pirate's island rum, yes it's a really good one. isn't it great? so dr. susie's a neighbor and just a really great influence on gwendolyn as a woman role model. but gwendolyn really just came up with this concept as looking to earn some extra money in the summertime last year. - [natalie] how old's your daughter? - [lisa] 14. - [natalie] 14? and so she kind of has created this whole concept, and this store exists because of her. - [lisa] it does.
10:18 am
and my husband said, "well you can work for someone else "or you could work for yourself." and so he took her to the mall and they shopped at things she likes, and she liked some bath and body shops, so she decided that maybe it was time to come up with some products in hudson and see if she can compete with them. - [natalie] well i think she's done that and more. i love this place, i know that people can come here and have parties, birthday parties. - they can, yes. we have one this evening, birthday parties, we had a bachelorette party not that long ago. - fun. - people are developing their own lotions, ng up with their own fragrances. we do special labels so they leave with, like the bridal party left with the name of the bride and groom and the date of the wedding. so just a really good way to make it fun and personal, and a little bit different. - well i think that we should go and explore some of these other rooms, and i think we have someone special that you have to meet, too. - [lisa] absolutely. - well i couldn't leave without introducing you to the young lady behind all of this. meet gwen. gwen, i am so impressed, at 14 years old,
10:19 am
w do you find time with school and ballet and everything else you're doing to create these things? - i mainly work the weekends, when i can, because of course i have ballet and school. - [natalie] so you're a busy woman and you've created so many unique things that i have never seen before. can we start up here? what section do you consider this right here? - this is a bunch of toys, like for soap, and i worked on it because my little brothers are obsessed with star wars-- so i'm sure this is a big seller for you guys, people come in and they see star wars, they jump at that, and then i saw some dolls over there that i think the little girls would love. - [gwen] oh yeah. there's like, elsa, and ana, and little girl stuff that a lot of people like. - what about the roses? i thought that these were just regular fake roses that you would have on display, but they're not. - mm-mm. they're actually like,
10:20 am
you can put them in the bathtub and they dissolve, cause they're like, soap. - [natalie] they're soap. - [gwen] yeah. - the roses are soap, so you can get a dozen, you can buy them individually? - mm-hmm. - how cool is that? and then over here, i thought these looked like delicious treats that you just have out on display, but they're all made out of soap as well? - yeah, they're little desserts and they're all made out of soap so you can wash yourself with them. it's pretty cool. - [natalie] so those are candy apples? - yeah, these are candy apples. - [natalie] now what made you all of a sudden think one day, - [gwen] well we were trying to come up with teacher gifts, and we made an apple. - [natalie] great gift idea. - [gwen] yeah. and then it turned into this. - [natalie] well again, they're right here in acme plaza, right next to perkins, when you're looking for the place, again it's gwendolyn elizabeth. after the beautiful gwen. thanks for having us. - thank you for having me. - after the break, we're gonna try some hot sauce. don't go anywhere.
10:21 am
10:22 am
10:23 am
our road trip here in hudson is heating up. why? because we are at heather's heat and flavor here at first and main. this is such a great place karen, to come down and shop for the day. your store is a must-stop, and there are so many fun things in here. you walk outside, the first thing you see is, what is it, butt rub? - [karen] heather's butt rub.
10:24 am
and figure out what that is, right? - gotta come in and figure it out. - but it's right here. - heather's butt rub is a dry rub that's for pork mostly, (phone rings) that's what it was made for, and we used it initially just to do pulled pork. we now use it on everything, (phone rings) from popcorn to potatoes, it's great on potatoes, great on steaks, (phone rings) wonderful on omelets. one package will do a seven pound shoulder roast or rack of ribs. - [natalie] is this a dip that you've made with it? because i see butt rub here. - [karen] yes, this is the dip made out of it. - [natalie] this is the dip? - [karen] we do put the dip recipe on the back. - [natalie] i just wanna see how many times i can say butt rub in a segment. that's delicious! - [karen] and it's really an inexpensive dip, because it's one tablespoon of this, so you've got four dips outta here. - [natalie] that's all you need. - [karen] right. - [natalie] that's awesome, that tastes delicious. okay, so you're obviously known for that. what else are you really known for here? - we're really known for our barbecue sauces. - oh, okay.
10:25 am
we do a barbecue sauce bar, where we put maybe 8, 10, 12 barbecue sauces out to sample for the summer. - [natalie] got some cool ones, maker's mark. (laughs) - [karen] actually this sells a lot. - [natalie] does it? the maker's mark does? - [karen] these two are new, both have bacon in them. - what do you have behind us here? is this tea? - [karen] this is all loose tea. (phone rings) - [natalie] do you hear that phone ringing off the hook constantly? - [karen] yeah, i'm afraid. - that is how popular you are. - no, it's just-- - that's how it is here. so what's with the tea? en] well they're loose teas. we sell them in little packages like this, they are actually located in the blue air seals that are way over there. we have an assortment from caffeine free, herbals. - they smell so good. - yeah, the black mango's incredible to smell. we do have a chai, we have some white teas, we have the new matcha that everyone wants. - [natalie] what is that? - matcha. actually, i'm taking it, it does give you more energy. - [natalie] really? - [karen] really does.
10:26 am
don't know that from taking it, but the energy part i can tell. - i like it, i like your style. alright, let's go over here, because i know that you've been told that i love hot sauce. and look at these shelves. - [karen] there's under 400, we used to say we had 400, but i'm weeding some out now so that i can, i had no room to bring any new ones in. so we're under 400 right now, and i pulled a couple that you might wanna try. - okay, how are we gonna try this? - [karen] on a chip. - [natalie] oh okay. - or you could do a toothpick. - let's try it on a chip. which one do you think? - i would say that one first. - tiki bar hot sauce. - that's the milder one. - okay, we start with mild, at least you're working me up. as i sample this, what do i see right here? what's this, the naughty section? - this is my naughty section. we don't want to leave it open too long. - oh, so we probably can't show everybody, yeah, you might wanna come in here and check this out on your own, i don't know if they're appropriate for tv.
10:27 am
- let's try this out. that's too much, huh? - [karen] no, you'll be fine. - [natalie] are you sure? - that's not that hot. - okay. (crunching) - now that's a cajohns hot sauce. - [natalie] we've been there. - [karen] you've been there. - [natalie] columbus. - [karen] right. - this is a great place, whoo, that's good, that's delicious. - [karen] it's good, i know. - [natalie] it is, it gives you a little bit of kick. - [karen] lots of good flavor. - [natalie] definitely doable. cause i put a lot on that chip, too. so you have such a variety. they have cool little trinkets that you can buy for drinks, - [karen] exactly, we have quite an assortment of bar items. most of them not expensive, which is the way we should go. (laughs) and little gadgets like, i have a fish spatula, because you know when you're trying to get a piece of fish out of the pan, and the spatula is this big, what happens. so this fish spatula is this wide. - so many great gifts, all really reasonably priced. you can come in here no matter what time of year, probably,
10:28 am
- exactly, exactly. - i'm feeling it now, so i'm going to go take a glass of water, and david is checking out a great place that has some amazing home decor. (calm guitar music) - [david] look what i found, it's a place called suburban sit, and i'm with phil right now, and phil, i almost didn't have a place to park, because, what do you, park your car in the store? - [phil] well sometimes, i mean, you know, parking can sometimes be tough so i put my car here in the store a little bit. what other furniture store is gonna have a volkswagen parked in it? - i look at this and i think flower child, so there's a little bit of a flower child thing going on here, a little bit, huh. - well a little bit. we actually dress up the bug during different seasons, so we do it at christmas time and other things. people love it, it's a babysitter, they come in, everybody's got a bug story, and it just starts the conversation and they feel very much at home here. - [david] you put people at ease, and we're at a place where they have some great-looking furniture, and i see a lot of stuff that's custom,
10:29 am
ke home. - [phil] we do. one of the things about our store is that if you see it, you like it, you take it home today. you don't have to wait 10 or 12 weeks for it to come in. - i hate that. - no, you're right, we did too. that's why we started this store. so the thing that we also do with custom stuff is, this is our custom line, it is 100% made in the usa, down in north carolina. so you can order with different fabrics, different cushions, whatever you want, and they quick ship it in a couple of weeks. - that is pretty good. so you get that good artisan stuff, like from high point and that sorta thing. hil] absolutely. - [david] yeah, terrific. okay so we saw some stuff over here, we saw some great pillows and that, and i see some room settings, and what i found really interesting here is, i see stuff that's new but it sorta reminds me a little bit of a little retro-like. - well that's it, that mid-century modern kinda retro look has come back, but it's more comfortable now and it's a lot better made now. - [david] even stuff for the kids here. - [phil] yep, we even have stuff for the babies, so if mom or grandma or dad, or anybody wants to come shopping, we have people right here that can help. - are you ladies expecting?
10:30 am
that's what they're expecting. - well we have everything from great baby furniture to little things you might need for a baby shower, or just a quick gift. we have all of those. - [david] you got some little outfits even. - [phil] yep. - [david] i like that. i see some stuff back here that i remember, sort of, like from the dick van dyke show, that kinda thing, like some of this tufted leather kinda stuff. - yep, some of this leather like this has really made a resurgence, this is great leather, they do a great job with it, and it's got that look, it's simple but classy, but you want to be cool and you want to be trendy, and that's what we're trying to do. - [david] and just to let people know, we've only seen 25% of the store, so there's a lot to look at, we're just sorta giving you a little taste. - [phil] so a lot of these tables were made with reclaimed wood, so this wood could've been anything from a boat to a barn, and then they re-make it and it's all re-manufactured, so it's not an old piece that's been refinished,
10:31 am
- when we go back to that whole thing about not making it a suit or whatever people call it, but we got these different kinds of pieces. you've got a piece here, a couple pieces look sorta formal, you've got a loveseat there and you pack it around the table, and then it becomes something warm and comfortable. - [phil] it's very cool and in-trendy right now to not match your stuff. getting different chairs, putting different things down, make it yours, your personality, that's what you need to do. - you show movies here? (laughs) with popcorn? what's going on? - kids come inn, they like a little bit of popcorn. it kinda occupies them, ound. this is the cool new look, in this particular finish, this comes in several finishes, but this, again, reclaimed wood, it's re-manufactured really nice. - how do you get the glass so clean? (laughs) - [phil] glass is out. - [david] glass is out? that's one less thing you have to clean. - glass is out right now. - well stopping in here to see phil and your wife, right? - yep, my wife's name is sherrie, she's the curator. she's actually the one that puts all this together. i just keep the wheels on the bus, that's my only job.
10:32 am
- [phil] absolutely, sherrie does everything, i don't do it, i look at things and go, she goes, "does that go together?" i don't know, but where do you want it? that's my job. - [david] well what you did is you showed me a great time, it's called suburban sit, it's right on main street in hudson, so right on the main drag, right over on 91. easy to find, and now, i'm gonna make a rhyme, - [david] lager and vine. - [phil] lager and vine. - that's what's coming up, after the break.
10:33 am
10:34 am
10:35 am
and cliff cravens is gonna make me look mighty good here, because it looks like i found this place, but you made this place, and boy, you guys made some great-looking food here. - we definitely did, we got a lot of stuff for you to eat tonight. you're gonna gain just a couple pounds. - [david] a thousand pounds. - [cliff] you'll be alright. - tell me, it's called lager and vine, gastropub and-- - [together] wine bar. - okay so there you go, that's the name. we're in hudson, we're just right down main street. how would you describe your location? - kinda right on the corner of route 91 and 303, - and i've known this guy for a little while, and he's been in some pretty good restaurants, but i think now that you've got this one in your midst right here, you got it going on. i was looking at some of the dishes here, like this one right here, it looks like a-- - [cliff] that's a tuscan bruschetta, tomato bruschetta. we got a lot of garlic, some fresh basil, balsamic reduction on there, it's a classic. - [david] so that's a nice portion too, so you could order that to the table, and, two, maybe even four people could grab at that-- - [cliff] absolutely. - [david] maybe try others. - [cliff] all of our appetizers,
10:36 am
id] this flatbread's beautiful too. - [cliff] the lager and vine chips, which is in the middle, which is the gorgonzola chip and spiced bacon, everything is meant to share, appetizer-wise. we want four people, two people, to come here and really have a great meal and be able to enjoy, you know, not spending, breaking the bank, but having a lot of fun sharing. - you're saying all the right things. - [cliff] i know. - [david] it's unbelievable. i love this flatbread, that looks great, we talked about that. what is this right here? - [cliff] that is a ahi tuna taco, that is a sushi-grade tacos, sashimi taco tuna, we sear it, and we serve it raw, of course that's the way tuna should be eaten. - boy is that tender, that's delicious too. - so we do a lot of tacos here, that's one of the more popular ones. again, we're trying to make it so the gastropub part of things is just a very approachable food, very easy, you can come here, you could have a strip steak or fillet, you could come in here and have tacos,
10:37 am
and you guys hook them up with the right combinations of things. - we're trying to, yeah. - so you have bottles all over the place. (mumbles) but i want to get over to this pork chop. this pork chop, that's got everybody's name on it. - that is an apple bourbon glazed, double boned thick pork chop. 24 ounces, it's gonna come with our mashed potatoes and our bacon braised brussel sprouts. it's a classic, it's been on our menu since we've started four and a half years ago, and it's a winner. you can't beat it. - i saw this steak when it came out, beautifully seared, and you know something about steaks, don't you. - [david] you know a lot about steaks. - [cliff] my background has a little bit to do with steak. that's a 14 ounce strip steak, it's gonna come with goat cheese mashed potatoes and broccolini. you know, our grill, our broiler back there gets to about 1600 degrees, kinda sears all the flavor into our steaks, and it's the best way to do it. - so the name doesn't really reflect steakhouse, but since you have such a big background in steaks, we know the meat, the steaks, the pork are gonna be super. - it's gotta be great, it's gotta be right. when you talk about steaks, fillets, strips,
10:38 am
hest quality we can possibly get our hands on, and we pass the value onto our guests. again, it's one of those things where you can go, we're using the same strip steak that you would get at the fleming's or the morton's. this is a broiled shrimp napa valley salad, so we've got fresh grapes on there, we've got candied pecans, we got asparagus. it's for the person that wants to eat light. - [david] so we got that here, let's put that in the light. let's see, we got one of these, we'll put that over here. that looks pretty good. e. - [david] little resin, we'll put that over here. and i'll raise you a big bottle of red. - [cliff] absolutely, you gotta have the cabernet. so the secret to what we do, we have 65 different craft beers-- - [david] 65? - [cliff] by the bottle, and on tap. all of our tap beers are ohio local, so we try to stay everything local, rotating our taps frequently. and wine? we have 50 wines by the glass and by the bottle. - so you'll never run out of something to drink here. - never, we have it all.
10:39 am
ou, we've got a full bar. so whatever you wanna do. - when you see cliff, make sure you say hello. - absolutely. - and your wife's here a lot, what's her name? - my wife, katie, is here all the time. you'll see her buzzing around, you'll see us when you're in, just say hello. - it's a great reason to visit beautiful downtown hudson. - absolutely. - and guess what? coming up after the break. maybe there's room for popcorn. - [cliff] why not? gotta have it.
10:40 am
10:41 am
10:42 am
- [natalie] welcome back, we are here in the heart of hudson. in first and main, at gracylane. tom, i just want to shop. i just want to shop. - well thank you. - i don't even know if i have time to do this piece, ping. i'm telling you, you're gonna come into this store, and find lines that you're not going to find anywhere else. - [tom] yeah, we have, i do a lot of buying, and i look and find what people are interested in, some of the top lines, you know, what's popular, what's trending. so it's always fun to come in here and just find something a little bit different, something that has a lot of meaning to it, and just, you know, sometimes it's fun, it's great for gifts, it's great for yourself.
10:43 am
and again, you're a trend-setter then, clearly. now there are some names that i've heard of before, but looking at the lines, i want to start with what's right behind us. - [tom] okay. - [natalie] swarovski line. oh, can't i just tell you, it makes your heart melt, how gorgeous these pieces are. - so some of these people, i mean, this is a miranda kerr designed piece, and i mean, it's great for a bridal set. - it's gorgeous. - it's absolutely gorgeous. - earrings, bracelet, necklace. - [tom] there are some rings here. - [natalie] i got my eye on that one already. that is insane. - [tom] the colorful ones. the slide bracelets are a lot of fun, tually one of the top sellers for swarovski. - [natalie] wow, and you have an entire display back there, this is just a small sample right up front. - [tom] yeah, this is just a small sample, we have almost the full line. - [natalie] now let's move over to this direction, because this is another one that is a namesake i think people have just really grown to absolutely love. - right, there's a lot of meaning to this line, it's called alex and ani, it's about bangles and stacking your bangles,
10:44 am
and the designer, carol, is just, it's all about the meaning of the bracelet, is what her big story is, and there's something for everybody in this line too. - it's a huge seller. moving though down, right next to it, if we move along down here, when i say that there are things you're just not gonna see anywhere, this is one of them, and you have pieces that are so few and far between that you're not gonna find. - this is unode50, it's out of spain, mostly in silver, but they are coming out with some gold pieces. this pearl piece right here is actually a one of 50 in the country. - [natalie] one of 50. - [tom] not in the country, - [tom] in the world. - [natalie] in the world? wow. - [tom] and that's what the original concept was, and then beyond that, since they have grown so big, they only do that for a limited number of pieces. this happens to be one,
10:45 am
it's just something different. - so i'm sensing a theme here, where you definitely make sure that what you bring into your store has some kind of story behind it. - [tom] yeah, a lot of the pieces, i mean, whether the artist behind the piece or the story behind the, whether it's a jewelry or accessory piece, some of the stuff is, it's hand-made or it's made in the u.s. up on that wall, that's sid dickens, he's an artist out of vancouver, british columbia, and he does these tiles, they're called memory blocks. different images, a lot of, they look more from the past, like history or something like that, but each one has a meaning on those too. and it's kind of you can create your own wall or your own artwork by combining different tiles. - they're gorgeous. what i like too, is you come into a store like this, and you're going to find things at all different price points, so if you want to spend a little more money you can. if you want to find something that's,
10:46 am
- [tom] right. this is my saint my hero, it's a company out of california. these bracelets are actually made in medjugorje, which is a, people go for pilgrimages there. these ones on the top are called the breathe bracelets, so it's just a reminder, when you wear this bracelet, that sometimes you just have to stop and breathe, you know, let the world go by. - i love this. great place to come, get gifts, for yourself, or for the people in your life as well, right? - absolutely. - gracylane, love the store, right here again, n in the heart of hudson. alright, i think it's time that we're gonna go do a little popcorn eating now. is that okay with you? - oh, fantastic. - and then i'll be back to shop more. - okay, thank you. (upbeat music) - a lot of people that come in the first time don't really realize that our name is crazy but true, and at some point while they're here, they say, "this is crazy." so we try and say, yeah it's crazy, but it's true.
10:47 am
you're kind of just like soaking it all in as we explain everything, let you just kinda look at it for a second, and then we'll do free samples and stuff. so people are a little overwhelmed if they've never been to a gourmet popcorn shop. some of it's just kind of like traditional flavors that every popcorn shop you go to has, they've got your normals, caramels, kettles, cheddar stuff. but then you kinda just have fun with it, so part of it's just the seasonings that you can buy from different places, but then we try to kinda mix our own stuff. so we just try to think of stuff that we like to eat and then try and make it into a popcorn pretty much. (popping) we have three different popcorns that we'd call, like, proceed popcorns. our mosaic blend, which is all the fruity flavors mixed together, 10% of that goes back to mosaic church, which is the church that we go to in stow. world harvest is the caramel milk chocolate pretzel one. so it's named after tom randall's world harvest, it's a ministry in the philippines, and then we have one that we make
10:48 am
os discovery school in the dominican, so dave and i have both been there, it's a english-speaking christian-led school in the dominican, so we both went there on a mission trip. there's a coffee plantation kinda thing close by that helps support the school. so we use their beans to make a caramel coffee dark chocolate coffee bean sea salt flavor, also spearmint and mocha. - this is one of my personal favorites, cinnamon roll, this is a caramel vanilla with white chocolate tastes just like, you know, a commercial cinnamon roll you'd find. usually the kids love it, but adults really really really love this one, because it's just subtle enough and buttery. so midnight rollo is one of our best sellers. this is just a simple caramel with dark chocolate and sea salt on it. so it tastes kind of like the candy rollo, but it's got a lot more going on with that subtle salt, really balances the flavor out, and it still has our nice buttery caramel on it.
10:49 am
e coming back for this flavor, in my opinion. we probably go through about ten gallons to twenty gallons of that a day. - [garrett] so the secret to making a good drizzle, obviously you got to start with good ingredients. good caramel, good chocolate, right amout of sea salt. you gotta be close to the popcorn so you're accurate. don't want to be flinging chocolate all over the place. there's a little bit of an art to it, it's not rocket science. all the popcorn, we do make here, so we buy all the raw ingredients, so we buy kernels, they're ohio-grown, non-gmo, couple different types that we use. and we buy the raw sugars, cheeses, chocolates, we buy all that stuff raw, and then we do pop everything here and we make everything here. along with the customer service. there's two parts really, that make a gourmet popcorn shop successful. so part one, customer service, which really more or less gets your first sale. second sale, it's gotta have to taste good. so if somebody takes it home, they're eating it, it doesn't taste good, they're not gonna come back.
10:50 am
dients that we know. we don't use any like pre-packaged stuff, we kinda mix all our own ingredients, have all our own recipes. so we're really trying to be also the best tasting popcorn. which we think we're, we're up there. if we're not the best, we're definitely one of the best. - popcorn, mm, so delicious. that's definitely a place to go.

welcome back, we are continuing our road trip here in hudson. if you haven't fallen in love with this town just yet, will sure do it for you. we are at life is sweet, this is michelle's place. thanks so much for having us here today. - thank you. - i can't tell you how adorable this store is. if you walk around here, there's several different rooms filled with so many different things, a lot of antiques. paint though, is this one of your big sellers? - yes, yes it is. we do a lot of painting of furniture, and we carry two lines of paint. colors of sweden and paint couture. - so people can not only come in for the paint itself
10:54 am
it you who hand painted this, or? - i paint a lot, also my father paints a lot. - [natalie] your dad, oh, bob's hard at work back there, i saw him. so he does a lot of this as well then too? - [michelle] yes, absolutely. - [natalie] where are you getting all of your pieces from, that you bring into the store? - [michelle] we get them everywhere we can. i'm out shopping in the morning and at night, and all the time. - [natalie] what made you get into all of this? you laugh, and you know who else is laughing, is her adorable mom, whose name is natalie, right here as well, she's giggling too. is there a funny story behind this? no, but she works very hard, and she helps me a lot. - [natalie] but so how did you come about wanting to do something like this as a shop? - [michelle] we've always just loved the old stuff, and we like to re-purpose, and it was just good timing for us. - [natalie] you can always find a place for everything. my granny had said, "never throw things away." you can always find someone who wants, one man's trash is another's treasure, right? - true, so true. - so there's so many great little trinkets in here. can we head back into your little kitchen area?
10:55 am
is room, you have everything from glass jars, i see, i love the little hens. so do you find that you have a lot of collectible items too? - yes, absolutely. people are always trying to find something. - now when they come in, i see a lot of items that people might look at and think, "hm, i really like that, but what am i gonna do with that?" do you help them in that way? - i would help them, absolutely. we try to, you know, help them put it on their wall or to change things, or. - [michelle] yes, yes. - i'm guessing one of the favorites of customers. - it is, it is, cause they can find the stuff that grandma had. - [natalie] so if people have an event maybe, something like that, would they come in here as well and purchase things for those types of occasions? - [michelle] absolutely, and a lot of weddings and showers. - [natalie] weddings, i can only imagine. - [michelle] they like the windows and my boxes, and the barn theme is so popular right now. - [natalie] we've seen so much down here, but then you have a whole second floor as well?
10:56 am
- [natalie] i love your store, it's so great, i can only imagine how much success you're gonna continue to have here. we're right on darrow road, and i love the name, life is sweet. - [michelle] thank you. - [natalie] you're too sweet. thanks so much again for having us here. - thank you.
