tv New Day Cleveland FOX November 14, 2016 10:00am-11:00am EST
10:00 am
- woo. - i love you. - welcome to new day cleveland, i'm david moss - and we are in a very good mood this morning because we are in the dominican republic. - punta cana, it is one of our favorite places to come but we have not been to the bay area here where we are at dreams la romana. - it seems so far from home, it feels so far from home, but really not that far, we jumped on a plane at cleveland, hopped interstate through canary travel, angie and karen were there, the apple folks were there and then you said hey, hold on for three hours and 45 minutes and you will be in heaven and i think they were right. - sure, then you take a short bus ride here,
10:01 am
r for me. - we've never visited la romana before, so this is our first trip here. - we're gonna show you some of the excursions, activities, amenities, we're gonna get to know our viewers a little bit more too, we're here with over 200 people and we want you to be able to see what it's like to experience a trip like this. - so it's gonna be a good time, and uh, i think the first thing we should do is to look around. - sure. (relaxed tropical music) d, we're in a lobby right now, i hear a blender making some kind of fabulous drink and i'm with mandy from canary travel, and looks good so far, we're talking about getting the lay of the land here, so where exactly are we, i thought we were in punta cana, but not exactly? - [mandy] no, we are in la romana, which is about 45 minutes south of punta cana, the nice thing is it's on the caribbean side, so the water, the beaches here is a little different,
10:02 am
you something that's one of the things i noticed first; when i got down and walked on the sand, the sand is softer than i remember in the dominican republic, the water clearer, and it seemed warmer too. - [mandy] it is, i think it is, and it's great for watersports, snorkelling and kayaking. - [david] yeah, a lot of people out there too, and also a bunch of different here from other places that dreams la romana is the fact that the beach is sorta like a horseshoe shape out there, so it's not like looking down a long, long straight beach, it's sort of got it's own protected cove, i think. - [mandy] right, yeah, and it's, yeah that's kind of a unique feature of the property i think too. instead of being an expansive beach, it's kind of a nice swimming cove, too. - [david] and it's very calm out there, but as you can hear in the background right now there might be some music and a little party getting fired up. - [mandy] lots of music. - [david] lots of music, the dominican republic, the folks here really love their music, and it's really great too, whenever you see them start to play something, or you hear drums, everyone starts moving a little bit, having some fun, right? - [mandy] yep.
10:03 am
- [david] you come in the lobby, great looking lobby, but these resorts aren't about the lobby are they? - no, it's about activities, the rooms, the service, just so much activities going on during the day, and in the evening, just lots to do if you wanna do a lot, and if you wanna just relax and chill you can do that too. - we got about 200 people coming here from the new day cleveland audience, and that's what some of them want the most, ferred pool way over at the right wing, just sitting there by themselves and enjoying very private time, you know, there, and folks a big party of us, right over the edge of the infinity pool on the beach, having a great time, so there's a, you can have wildness or you can have privacy. - [mandy] yeah there's four different sections to the hotel, so it does have the family friendly areas, and then the adult only, which is great for honeymooners; if you have access to the whole property but if you kind of
10:04 am
- yeah, so that's something we're gonna show you a little bit later in the show too, i mean, there's two preferred areas here, which is like, it's like a little upgrade kind of thing if you need a little more, like, maintaining your own privacy kind of thing, and one side is for kids and the other side is for, if you don't have kids, so it's a little different, so that's, that's two of four pools, and there's four pools here. - yeah and there is one adult only pool too, so that's good. - and how about spa, we're gonna have a spa here, right? - [mandy] oh yes, i've got to experience that today, it was beautiful full service spa, massages, - i saw mandy when she got off the plane and landed here at dreams la romana and she was like "okay, what to we do next, what do we do next," and she got her massage, now she's. - now i'm feeling good. - lean back like this, huh, and a big thing is the fact that you can probably have food or drink whenever you want. - [mandy] yeah, 24 hour, it's really 24 hour room service, food, drinks whatever you want-
10:05 am
- [david] well we got six restaurants, and we got a party erupting just about every second just about any place, and i saw there's a great place if you do bring the kids, they've got a kid's club here. - yes, they have the explorer club for three to 12 year old and then they also have a teen core zone, which has like a teen disco and all kinds of activities for teens. - i walked past an area that had a few restaurants last night, and there was a whole bunch of like fusball games, ping pong. - [mandy] pool tables, yeah, they have it all. - [david] i saw a lot of folks out there all ages playing in the middle of the night, it looked like my kids, but they were a little bit older than my kids, so everyone thinks they're a kid when they come to dreams la romana, right? - they have something for everybody, all ages. - okay, we've got something for everybody throughout the show too, we're gonna take a look at the preferred clubs, we're gonna find out about butler service, we're even gonna take a little road trip within a road trip away from the resort, i think you're gonna like it, that's coming up after the break.
10:08 am
10:09 am
not mexico indeed, it's the island of hispanola, the second largest in the caribbean. now this is where christopher columbus landed in 1492, making the dominican republic the oldest country in the americas. our landing was easier and a whole lot more convenient thanks to apple vacations. - it's 88 degrees, in jeans. - [david] new day cleveland has been here before, visiting punta cana, the eastern most tip thanks to a new highway, we're heading south to la romana; dreams la romana. - oh it's a wonderful place, great, the view's perfect, the weather's gorgeous, and you can't beat it. - oh my god it's paradise. - this is fantastic. - [david] a beautiful resort everywhere you look, i mean the pools, the beaches and the warm, crystal-clear water of the caribbean,
10:10 am
more than 500 years ago; people rich in culture. (traditional music) some may wonder what fuels the music, the dance, it has a lot to do with crops of sugarcane, yeah, which becomes molasses, which becomes rum. - nobody know who invented, nobody know, but as far as i know, i think that was invented in africa. ve it here now. - yeah, we're so glad- - because they're all really enjoying it. - yeah, they enjoying, it's good. - [david] rum is very effective, it may have been instrumental in getting this familiar face on the dance floor. natalie's dancing, i'm learning about strange new fruits, a variety of bananas. - but when these get ripe, it become like this.
10:11 am
cocoa for chocolate, and some of the best coffee in the world. columbus discovered the dominican republic, and so did we. (bright acoustic music) we are in, well we were supposed to be at dreams la romana, it's our big road trip, right? - yeah. - mandy, from canary travel, and we decided we were gonna take a road trip with our road trip, so someone told us to go to- - altos de chavon. - which means "high above the river chavon", so our across the valley there we see the beautiful river, and we're in a village that looks like, what century might this be?
10:12 am
we drove in the taxi up here, 75 bucks for all of us, the whole crew, we parked in a parking lot out there, and entered this park that actually took us back in time. - [mandy] and it's this little hidden gem that you'd normally not even know is here, that we've found. - so mandy's with canary travel and she travels a lot, goes a lot of places, and we come up here and we look around some of these little buildings here. - [mandy] oh my gosh, it's beautiful. - [david] she says she got chills. - [mandy] i did, looking out at the river there, it's beautiful. - [david] so the next thing you know, her apple phone comes out and is going click click click click click click click, they started this place back in about 1970-something when they got the idea to build this place, and they put it together, i think they had it mostly organized by 1982, so that's how long it's been here, and right now it's like taking mossman to church, what's this church, like a 16th-century style church, and all the stuff is handcrafted here, you can tell all the handcut stones, the fountains, the ironwork and the woodwork are just incredible. - [mandy] so much time put into this place, it's crazy. - so we heard a little bit about it, we don't know exactly what we're gonna find
10:13 am
there's actually opportunities for real estate nearby, so this is sort of the hidden gem in the middle of it, and there's a lot to see, so why don't we go check it out. - alright, let's go. (chirpy music) - [david] did you make this one senor, did you make this? yes? look how beautiful that is, huh? of course the whole place is overwhelming when you first walk up on it, but then you get a little closer, there's all
10:14 am
and it was easy to do, because there are so many great places to go, we've got a great museum around the corner, i just saw the best cigar store i ever saw in my life around the corner, cuban cigars too, guys, in case you ever come out here, there's a saloon, like a little cute bar down around the corner, and a whole bunch of different art studios, jewelry, all kinds of great stuff, and what i learned was is that there's a design school here and that all the students who attend this design school and graduate automatically get into parson's school of design in new york city or paris. automatically, that's pretty good! hot! i gotta tell you, cats everywhere here,
10:15 am
you know we saw the cats walk around and everything, does this blow your mind here, the ampitheatre? - it's incredible. - is this something or what? - it's crazy. - so this place started way back in 1976, took ten years to build, and then when they built the church, the church we saw earlier, saint stanislaus, pope john paul the second came here to consecrate it, how 'bout that? - that's amazing. it's an amazing place. - five thousand seats, right? - why don't you go down there and sing? - oh, nobody wants to hear me sing. the chairman of the board, who's that? - frank sinatra. - that's right, frank sinatra was here in 1982 and a whole bunch of great opera singers since then, and you know who else should come here, you should come here and check it out, what's the name of the town again? - altos de chavon. - we did a good job, beautiful stuff, and we only nicked the surface, there's a whole lot to see. - you know this dreams la romana resort
10:19 am
and i have to say that this resort is honestly by far, one of my favorites, and it's because, for one of the reasons, we have people like darling here who really make it so special, you are just so sweet, and i know that one of your specialties here is really allowing people to see what kind of accommodations people can have when they stay in dreams la romana. - well- - and we're in, technically one of the preferred sections, and so, there's two preferred sections here at the resort; we're in one of them, this is considered the adult only? - adults only, yeah. - so what does that mean, then technically, i mean i feel like i, that basically sums it up, but what does it really mean? - well, so this is the preferred adults only, we have like private places for the people who buy the preferred facility, so we have a private pool, a private bar, right at the end we have the only restaurant
10:20 am
so right at the end we have a private section on the beach, you cannot see it from here, but it's just right there, and we also have a private lounge, which is open for breakfast, and from 7am until 11pm, we have continental breakfast we have private amenities, we have premium drinks, we have dessert and we have private concierge service. - so that's on one side, and then if you go to the other side of the resort, it is also preferred but it's, if you have - exactly, so that's the preferred club for family members, we have like basically the same as we have here, private pool, a private bar, a private place for breakfast, and we also have a private section on the beach and also a private lounge, with the facilities and amenities that i just told you. - and so on that side, too, i noticed when you walk into that side, there's little areas where kids can maybe play games, inside of the preferred lounge, so there's, depending on which side you want to do.
10:21 am
we have they can come here and use the facilities, so we have a kid's club, so the little ones go to the kid's club and then the parents can come over here. - so when it comes to rooms, a lot of people, i know, when they come down here, they're going to be staying in what i'm staying in, which is nice, you don't have to get a preferred club room, so what are the typical, i guess, rooms people will be staying in, you have a variety. - yeah we do, we have premium room, garden view, and we also have premium rooms with the ocean view, so there's some people, they want to stay in their rooms and they just want to purchase the preferred facilities, so from the rooms that they are in, they can come and use the facilities. - [natalie] in the regular rooms, you have everything you need from your bathroom-
10:22 am
we have the minibar, we have the, like the regular facilities that we have inside, and also like the basically it's the services, and the welcoming that the staff give, and we want the people to be, to feel like at home, we want to be the place that you feel like, when you feel like, i wanna go to paradise, i want to go and be relaxed, we wanted to feel like you want to come to dreams la romana. - and it doesn't matter what room you pick, the staff will make you feel that way. to take it up a notch and go the preferred room, what comes with a preferred room that makes it a little bit different? - [darling] we have the closets are a little different, besides other rooms are basically the same, but we have like, amenities, it's like basically the amenities that are in the room, like the bed turned out, like pillow menus, and to then feel the service. - and then, i think that you can take it up another notch here, okay. - yeah, we have suites, we have honeymoon suites,
10:23 am
ave one master suite. - now what's in the, what makes the master suite so special? - the master suite is very very special- - it is just one, so you gotta reserve this in advance. - yeah so we have for honeymooners, anniversary or simply just couples who wanna be like a little bit more spoiled than the others, so it comes with a private pool right on the balcony, so the amenities are all different from the other rooms, it's like the special one, as soon as you get into the room, you're gonna feel like in paradise, like relaxed, the furniture, the bed, , they have a walk-in closet over there, it's beautiful. - wow, so i can tell you this, no matter what room you stay in here at dreams la romana, you will feel like you are home, because these guys make you feel that way, make us feel so special, that's why we love it, isn't she darling?
10:24 am
joying it. (peppy tropical music) - it is one beautiful place, a fantastic place, we had a chance to visit so much of the whole area here, but i found something that's very special about yoel, yoel is called a butler, now is this like a butler that we see in the cinema, like in the movies? we provide full servicing at the resort, it's like, we are like a personal concierge. - [david] oh, a personal concierge, so that means when i arrive, so i arrive at dreams la romana, you greet me at the door? - [yoel] yeah, i know where and when you are arriving, i know the time you are arriving here, we wait for you at the main lobby.
10:25 am
l] yeah, we pick up your luggage, with a bellman, and we escort you to the preferred club to make your check-in. - so the preferred club, that's another nice thing about the preferred club is you get a private check-in. so if i wanna get a butler, i want to have a butler, it's gonna cost me a little extra money, huh? - yeah, just a little extra money. - so how many days do people usually get a butler, can you have a butler just like one day you're here or two days, or is this for your whole stay? - the whole stay, the whole week. - okay, so it's a whole week; you also three days, can i have a butler for three days? - yeah, for three days. - okay, so you got me checked in, i got my luggage, i'm in my room, what does the butler do next for me, what do you do? - we're gonna be doing all for you; anything that you need for example in your room, if something happens wrong with your room, if you have to call, we provide a phone for you to keep in touch, anything that you need, just you have to call your butler, because we provide the servicing for our resort. - how about if i need tickets for like, the boat to go to that island?
10:26 am
- [yoel] yeah, i coordinate, and you just have to call me and tell me which one excursion would you like to do, yeah i go to the representative and i can make you appointment, i can book for you, and i deal with your ticket, just you have to go to the place. - okay, so i, say i need to buy some things, say i need something like that comes from the store here, or i need lotion, all that kind of stuff, can you help me with that? - yeah, you just have to call me and i do all for you. - how is everything? - [yoel] so if you want to have lunch on the beach your butler and we're gonna be coming and bringing you food; if you don't know what you would like to eat, just you have to call up and we can bring many for you. in order so you can see, you can choose, you can order, we're gonna be bringing to you your food. - that is excellent, now what about that one spot, i've got right in the middle where i can't get any lotion? you know like i can't reach it, do i call the butler to come help me get that? - we can help you and also, just you have to call a butler and we can make you appointment
10:27 am
- the spa, now that's a good place! now what happens at the spa, what kind of appointments do you make me there? - oh we have deep tissue, treatment, back and shoulder, at the spa also we have sauna, jacuzzi and pool, and also if you want to have, together with your family, if you are coming here to dominican republic to dreams la romana with your kids, your daughters, and your wife, you can go all together, for four people, or five or six people. - so you make it a family affair. - yeah. - how 'bout my nails can i get my nails done? - yeah, we have also nails. - my toenails? - yeah. - so they have like polish and everything, huh? - yeah, everything. - get my hair done? - also we have a barber's shop at the spa. - you're the butler, you're the man, his name is yoel, it's spelled y-o-e-l, all you gotta do is, you have a special phone number or a button? - no we have a special phone number for butler service only.
10:28 am

they're great personalities, fun people. - one of the other great activities that we like to do when we're down here is have a little cocktails here and there, and i think everybody sitting around can attest to that, that we enjoy this, and this is a bartender contest that we are doing today, i haven't done one of these in a while and i miss it, and andy is going to show us, or tell us, guess, the rules of this contest first. - that's it, that's it natalie, it's going to be judged by the four judges that we have over there, those judges- - [natalie] wave, judges. - they're gonna get prepared just to taste, they're gonna make their own cocktail, and also, natalie, you have to name it, you see? - [natalie] oh, we have to name it too, okay. - you gotta name it. - okay, can you handle this guys, here is the drink makers on this side of us, over here. pretty stiff competition. so i need participation from the audience,
10:32 am
e foxy lady thing? it's gonna be a foxy lady drink, okay. we're gonna start with the rum, i'm gonna add a little triple sec, that's pineapple, i want some pineapple too, okay. this is gonna be the foxy part. (cheering) i have a feeling it's gonna be really strong it smells good. of course, the bartender gets a sample first. and then the judges... - ooh, just a little bit, come on! (overlapping talking) - [natalie] from the judge's reaction, i had this competition sewn up. - oh natalie, that's excellent. - excellent, excellent, foxy lady is it. - [natalie] after my sure-win cocktail, the viewers took their best shot. - jerry you know what you're doing.
10:33 am
next up, sally, she made grandma's medicine. sally that's not good when you're wincing at your own drink! - here we go! - it's good, she has a, there's a, (mumbles) i've had too many! (laughs) i'm gonna stop talking for the rest of the segment, i think it's better off. following up with denise and her sunset drink. - very good, it tastes like the sunset. - yeah let's get a little vodka in there, maybe a lot of vodka, you know when you get up at four o'clock in the morning you need an eye-opener. - [natalie] and last but certainly not least, george, with his farmer's eye opener. - okay, more, more, more more. how much, a little more? okay. - now you need something hot, yeah
10:34 am
pour more, pour more, pour more. - george, george cocktail. (cheering) - you know what, i could go for that in the morning. - george, that is an eye opener, whoo! we've all made our decisions here, we gotta know what they think though, so, see who wins. - [andy] you write down the name of the first place, the name of the second place, and the name of the third place. - [natalie] votes were tallied in this heated competition and- - now we have the judge's verdict, they say that the first place is undoubtable,
10:35 am
- [natalie] in second place. - mr. farmer man, george! (cheering) - [natalie] third place, or last place, depending on how you look at it. - the rest of the participants are tied! - i have never had paella, and i'm looking forward to it. - oh yes, the fun continues down here in the dominican republic, what's your name? - i'm jerry. - jerry, and what's your name? - i'm deborah. - deborah, so they come up to me and they're like, can you make ribs, can you make ribs like i make ribs?
10:36 am
- and what'd you say? - i'm the best. - you're the best. - they're okay, i'm the best. - she said her ribs are so good you don't need ribs, the rub is that good, how 'bout that. okay, you guys wanna head down and make some paella? we're headed over with the chefs over there, andy's over there with chef israel, it's paella time! here we go, it's paella time here at la romana, so andy what's going on here? - okay very simple, now we have ingredients, and we're gonna just first fry, and after that we're gonna add the squid, we call it calamari in spanish. - [david] okay, the chef's name is israel, right? - israel, israel is that one. - [david] so he's softening up some carrots here, he's softening up some onions, and now he's gonna put in some squid, so the squid the squid cooks quite a while, because it's a little tough in the beginning, right? - yeah that, that's why it's put in first,
10:37 am
chef's already got one cooking a little bit. so this one's already got the rice in it, oh do you smell the saffron? - yeah that's, that's it, you cannot make a paella without saffron, it has to be added saffron, difficult to find but we have it for you. - [david] okay so here we go, gonna put in some shellfish now, and it looks like it's gonna be mussels. - the mussel and shellfish. - [david] israel, show me your mussels. show me your mussels. so these are clams, andy helps him with the spanish, i help with the english. so these look good israel, these look like razor clams or something they look nice. - now after that we call the prawns. - [david] okay so we got the shrimp, prawns, here we go. - [andy] this kind of prawn we call the tiger prawn.
10:38 am
one of those with the shell on it, it's a little sharp, i wouldn't recommend it. - [andy] that is, uh, chicken soup. we call it broth. - we call it broth, we put the "th" on it, right? - [andy] and now, the saffron. - [david] i gotta tell you, this stuff smells so good. - now is pepper, with salt. - check it out. - it's like a pre-cooked rice, yeah. - [david] so beautiful, so meanwhile, you guys set up a beautiful area out here for us. white tablecloths, wine glasses, drinks. - we're so excited to have this. - looks delicious, i hope i can do it at home. - i think things are going well here, we've got the paella lesson under-belt, now we're just gonna serve it up and everyone's gonna chow down. - [andy] are you ready to eat?
10:39 am
10:42 am
- welcome back to new day cleveland, we're on the road and i'm with mandy from canary travel, thanks canary travel for getting all 200 plus guests down here from new day cleveland and we're having a great time. - yeah it's been an adventure. - a real adventure, okay, so we arrive and they greet us at the front door and it's fantastic but it seems to me no matter what time of day we get here, everyone wants to run off and chow down, - yeah, and there is great food options here. - how many? - uh, there's seven specialty restaurants, a couple cafes, a great coffee shop, so whatever you haven't tasted before you can find it. - and what's really great about this, i mean listen to this, to me, it's wild, you get in here, and they give you a little cocktail when you get here, nice little refreshing drink right, you're on your way to your room and you walk past a place that looks like starbucks but it's not, it's dominican republican coffee, which is, you can't beat that, right. - it's the best. - and you're like should i go in and get one,
10:43 am
ing in to get a coffee, so you get a coffee, they have lattes, they have everything you want, they've got pastries and it's not like, is that going to be an extra $4 for that pastry, no, it's included, right? - it's all included, you can drink coffee all day if you want. - yeah it is terrific, you get to your room, okay, and oh, i'm gonna go to the restaurant, we were talking about all these different places all these different restaurants, and as i'm walking down the beach, i find a place which has hamburgers are broiling right on the beach along with hotdogs. - [mandy] beach burgers. - [david] yeah, so we're talking about all the different restaurants but how many opportunities do you think are between trying to get to a restaurant, you have to have a snack or something to eat here? - [mandy] yeah, i mean you can turn around and pretty much find something to eat any time of day anywhere, so that's never far away. - yeah, just like there's a party everywhere you go, yeah, it's amazing, so for me, i tell ya, for me i am not a buffet guy, but when i come on these trips with canary travel, i love the buffets, the buffets here they change almost every day, it's almost like a different vibe, isn't it. - [mandy] they have a different theme every night, so yeah they switch it up every night,
10:44 am
- last night i had mexican and it was delicious. - i missed the mexican because i went to the italian restaurant, the specialty restaurant, and it's an air-conditioned restaurant, and at that one, they make you put on longer pants. - yeah there's a bit of a dress code at the specialty restaurants, the buffet you can pretty much wear whatever, but you know, they try to have you spruce it up a little bit for the specialty restaurants. - [david] you know what's nice about it too, they've got a sommelier, you know, they've got a maitre d', and you come in, and they sit and you can, you know you can have a big party or it can be a small intimate party, and i just love that italian restaurant, it has great food but it also has a beautiful wine room, that it shares with the french restaurant. - [mandy] yeah, yeah that's kind of unique, i think to, most properties don't focus too much on wine, so to have that option here is great. - yeah, you know, you talk about everything that is inclusive, but the fact of the matter is, you can actually upgrade some of the wines and things like that when you go to the dinners, so we have the italian restaurant we just talked about,
10:45 am
e they say, hey, you should probably wear long pants, and once in a while they let you sneak in too, right? so what did you say you had at the buffet yesterday? - i had mexican. - she had mexican, so i heard that was great, and i know tonight is international. - [mandy] yes, so they'll have a wide array of food from all over the world. - right next door to the buffet is a place that's got these big glass beautiful pots out front, i couldn't figure out what it was, it's the asian restaurant. - yeah, oh, i haven't eaten there yet, i'll have to try that one. - i saw your eyes go wide a little bit. and it's not the kind of asian restaurant they do some of that there, but it's more of an asian rim kind of food here i think. - yeah, a la carte, just kind of sit down and eat whatever. - my wife is here with me, kim and i went to the seaside grill a couple times and that was terrific, they've got super nachos there, they got different soups and all kinds of great stuff, and then of course there's the seafood restaurant. - yes, yeah, seafood is great, i mean you can always get the fresh catch of the day fish, and lobster on certain nights, so there's definitely
10:46 am
