year, but officials say tonight's town hall came after the company's set to build the i-77 toll lanes filed for bankruptcy on a toll lane project in texas. >> we felt like we needed to put facts out there and to get this straightened out. >> reporter: the widen i-77 group presented an analysis of the toll lane project during a town hall meeting at the cornelius town hall. the presentation highlighted common features of private tolling projects from all over the country, and compared them to the project right here in north carolina. >> at the end of the day, right, it is pretty clear this is a method and a methodology of cintra and how they do business and canceled many projects in the past and fully expect this one to default as well. >> it's a misuse of money, and we need to learn more about that and pay attention to what our government's doing, no matter if you are a democrat or republican, it doesn't matter. everybody needs to pay

is spent. >> reporter: widen i-77 supporters weren't surprised to see that cintra filed for bankruptcy on its texas toll project. >> we should learn and we should be grateful to states of texas and indiana and others who have taken the hit so we don't have to. seems like we're going down the same primrose path. >> this is nothing new, all part of the big scheme with cintra. >> reporter: although the ncdot says cintra's contract does protect taxpayers from any financial losses, widen i-77 leader are not so sure and claim the local economy will lose money over the lifetime of the contract. >> this contract is so bad for the citizens of lake norman. citizens say we need to cancel the project. >> reporter: they think the state should get out before it's too late. >> thevate almost 200% over

january 2015, he sexually assault his stepson at their home in monroe. when the teen told mom about abuse, she notified authorities and began the investigation. he must register as a sex offender for 30 years. law enforcement groups are asking north carolina legislators not to mandate how, when or if they should use body cameras. they want that decision to be made within their departments. we've reached out to several local sheriff's offices and found out they take the same stance as the nc sheriffs association. the group does not want body cameras to be a statewide requirement, saying local law enforcement agencies should decide that on their own. >> just to say you've got to have them may be the wrong way to go. kayla: gaston county sheriff says it's one thing to require the cameras but the big question is where will the funding come from? up next a legislative subcommittee will decide a recommendation that will go to the full committee, the general

legislation is needed. we now know the identity of the person killed. they found two men shot including 24-year-old michael antoine jefferies, jr., pronounced dead at the scene. a third man was found at a nearby hospital. detectives believe this was not a random act of violence are and still investigating. plaza-midwood diners are on high alert as the search continues for the person responsible for holding up one of the area's most popular restaurants. someone robbed the midwood smokehouse on central avenue. someone came into the restaurant around midnight, flashed a gun and stole an unknown amount of money. police have no suspects. if you know anything about this case, you are asked to contact crimestoppers. scary moments for passengers leaving on an

douglas international, forced to turn around after minutes in the sky and making hard landing after apparent plane malfunction as united airlines sky west flight 5711 leaving en route to chicago. witnesses say fire trucks surrounded the plane upon landing. united is inspecting what caused the mechanical issue, but those who we spoke to say the flaps on the wings failed. you're going to want to check your wallet, especially if you're carrying $100 bill. police tell fox 46 fake bills like this are circulating around the area. in boone, a number of businesses have gotten fake hundreds, bills that clearly say for motion picture use only. it looks just like the real thing, and has yellow pen marks to confuse people into thinking they've been tested for authenticity. anyone who sees one of these is urged to call the police. sports and politics don't mix. that's the message from a nascar sponsor following nascar

of donald trump for president. marcus lemonis is the ceo of camping world which is the sponsor of nascar's camping world truck series. he's upset with the nascar ceo because he endorsed a candidate period. he says he'd have the same reaction if the endorsement was for a candidate other than donald trump. >> my advice to brian is to understand that he's got a constituency, and there's no place in business for politics and religion, there's just no place for it. kayla: camping world is set to be a nascar sponsor for years to come. lemonis says france's decision to endorse trump does not change that. a massive case of cat hoarding has a 60-year-old woman facing 92 charges. gail craig was charged and is expected in court in may. the local animal shelter is struggling to rehome dozens of

sam smith takes us inside the house where craig was living inside those cats. >> reporter: 90 cats inside one home. now as you would imagine, there was a cause for concern for animal control investigators. the cats were surrendered from this home in mooresville to the iredell animal shelter. >> we've been here late at night several nights, working with rescues in and out of the state. >> reporter: director brad gates says they're focused on pursuing charges against the owner of the cats. we're told gail craig now faces 90 counts of animal cruelty, and two counts of failure to properly dispose of a deceased animal. two cats were found dead inside the home. >> the amount of urine and feces in the situation, a high level of ammonia in the atmosphere. some of the cats were, were sick and not receiving treatment. >> reporter: animal control

showing cats were found in cages and cabinets. investigators say the cats were living in an unhealthy environment. neighbors tell me craig is a kind and compassionate person that loves animals and she would never do anything to intentionally hurt them, and that this whole situation just got out of hand. about half of the rescued cats have already been adopted out of the shelter. gates says it's important to move forward with the charges against craig and also important to not set aside the needs of these cats. >> the number one priority is getting these cats into new homes and new environments where they can live a healthy life. >> reporter: in iredell county, sam smith, fox 46 wjzy. kayla: we're told the cat owner is living in her home. the surroundings may be unhealthy for her as well. the county health department says they are not involved in this case. >> i am announcing today that not only am i running for re-election in the twelfth

started the process of moving to the queen city. kayla: and with that, u.s. representative alma adams has thrown her hat into the ring for re-election in the twelfth district. the twelfth district was mostly in regions like winston-salem and current home in greensborough. she's looked at neighborhoods but waiting on a court decision about the new map's legality before going ahead and moving. after weeks of gathering parents' input, feedback from cms as they release the results of the student assignment survey. 206 pages of detailed findings were put together for teachers and parents alike to read. when asked what were the most important factors when selecting a school, most responded by saying the staff and leadership of the school followed by the school environment, and then the location or proximity to home when. asked what factors influence

. kayla: all right, north carolina voters listen up. democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders is heading here to the tar heel state, tomorrow he'll be in raleigh holding a rally at the duke performing arts center. looking to build momentum. he'll have an uphill battle in north carolina. hillary clinton has had a strong showing in every southern state. and as for the democratic front-runner, she was in north carolina today. clinton made a stop at a high school in durham in hopes of getting more people involved in early voting before the big primary. the former secretary of state

we'll not see a return of our winter-like temperatures over the next week here. this is next thursday, one week exactly from today, and it's going to be 73 and it's going to look nice there. some cloud cover, should be a nice day for st. patrick's day. talk about weather over the next couple of days. that's the more pressing issue, especially since we are going to see some opportunities for some rain. so big weather system, it's been a major haymaker to the west of us, lot of flooding issues, and it's just wreaked havoc across much of the south over the last couple of days. now, for us, it comes through, and we mentioned this a little while ago, has to go over the top of the appalachians, appalachians do a great job of breaking up our weather and making us in a spot that doesn't see as much severe weather or flooding. we get it from time to time, not this time. we're going to see a warm front pushing through saturday. and that's going to be early

chinese manufacturer is building a brand-new production facility in south carolina. the building will be a first for the company. various openings include machine ops, technicians and customer service options. they'll start hiring over the next five years. if you're a frequent flier for business or pleasure, then this will be music to your ears. a new ten year lease between charlotte douglas international and all of the major carriers is expected to be approved by city council monday night. delta, united, american, southwest and jetblue are all part of the deal that will replace american airlines 30 year hub operation deal. another big component of the deal, those airlines have pledged to put $500 million in terminals. an iredell county man facing major charges after his

daniel lee sheryl was house sitting for a friend but when the owner came back, police say sheryl had changed all the locks on the hours, driven her car, even stolen a number of items including the car. after an investigation, detectives say sheryl admitted to everything. he's been hit with a long list of felony charges. a fox 46 follow-up. the man accused of breaking into a number of cars at area fire departments has been charged with yet another one. 26-year-old johnny bing of charlotte has now been charged with stealing a gun from a firefighter's car at mount more fire department. bing is accused of breaking into 15 different cars at various charlotte area fire departments while crews were out on calls. at $25,000. trader joes is pulling bag of pistachios off shelves due to health concerns. nationwide.
