let's go to stan saunders live in the newsroom. you just got off the phone with the ravens organization. what can you tell us? >> i can tell that you steve mcnair was found dead in downtown nashville with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. although this hour police remain at the scene trying to gather evidence. we have confirmed that mcnair and an unidentified woman have been shot and killed. at this hour police do not know the circumstances behind the shooting. mcnair retired from the nfl. in fact, he did it right here in april of is last year with the baltimore rains. just moments ago i spoke with kevin burn, the ravens senior vice president, about this terrible tragedy. >> the ravens are just devastated by this news. we talked to two players right away, ray lewis and samari

rolle who were so shaken by the news that they have asked for some time just to think about it before they make any statements. of course, samare and derrick mason were longtime teammates, and i will and steve have been close for many years, two of the great warriors in the game. but this is so sad. we immediately think of steve's four sons who we always had around our complex in owings mills and had them in for games on sundays, along with his wife. so this is tough, tough news for us right now. >> i had a chaps to really get to know steve mcnair in the two years he was here. a very nice guy. kept a smile. was known more than anything else to be a tough warrior because he played with a whole lot of pain and punishment from the hits from the nfl. steve and his wife michelle have four children, four sons. more in sports later on. adam, back to you.

>> about an hour ago i was on the phone with nashville police. they said it was a very active scene there. did kevin byrne have any other information? >> facts are so slow in coming in. details hard to come by for now. to answer your question, no. but as the night progresses we may get more, and if need be we'll be back to let everyone know. >> stan saunders is on top of this. steve mcnair was 38 years old. wjz is always on. for instant updates on this still developing story and the official statement from the ravens, it's right there at wjz.com. we'll also have any new information throughout this newscast and in sports in 15 or 20 minutes. is now to the other major story we're tracking tonight. a baltimore teenager arrested. he is accused of shooting a five-year-old leaving that little girl clinging to life. eyewitness news is live tonight at police headquarters in downtown baltimore. suzanne collins has the very latest on this. >> reporter: the police commissioner says they have worked around the clock since the shooting of the five-year- old girl on thursday, and it's

been fruitful. they do have an arrest of a teenager. that's the reaction of a woman who is related to the five-year- old victim shot thursday to news that police have made an arrest. >> there are things we do in life that we have to answer for. >> reporter: and settling a fight with a gun? >> is never the reason. that's never the answer. that's never the answer. >> reporter: the little five- year-old became an innocent victim when two boys got in a fight on south but laskey street. police say one wept to get a gun and carelessly fired a series of shots, striking both the intended victim and the child. >> we were able to identify the suspect, lamont davis, a young man who is 17 years of age. we have obtained an arrest warrant last night for mr. davis, and this morning located

him at about 8:00. >> reporter: police say they arrested lamont davis in south baltimore and are searching that house for evidence. in the neighborhood where the child was shot people are pleased by the quick action by police. >> relieved. i know that it's safe now for my kids to come outside. i don't have to worry about him running around. >> reporter: the five-year- old's name was raven. she was shot in the head and was bleeding from the mouth, according to wi.s another mother came up to try to comfort her. police are out in force, perhaps to reassure people, and to prevent retribution. and the little girl does remain at shock trauma on a respirator. she is in grave condition. >> suzanne collins with that update. thank you. police say davis will be charged with two counts of attempted murder. it was a narrow miss for a maryland man carrying a truckload of fireworks when his vehicle caught fire. state police say the fire was mechanical, and luckily the fireworks didn't go o. did he

escape the incident without injury. a worker in north carolina was killed in a fireworks explosion that also critically hurt four others. workers were apparently unloading the fireworks for tonight's display. witnesses say it was like 40 minutes of fireworks going off in just four seconds. meanwhile, across the country americans are making our nation's birthday and marking it tonight from washington, d.c. all the way to the middle east. >> reporter: for u.s. troops in afghanistan it was a 4th of july away from their loved ones back home. >> when you can celebrate america's independence, when you're in uniform and serving your country, it's always special. >> reporter: vice president joe biden visited america's other front in the war on terror trying to reassure iraqis that the united states is committed to iraq's progress. >> as the united states continues to draw down its forces, we will continue to help train, equip, and support

iraqi security forces. >> reporter: president obama returned from camp david and checked on preparations for tonight's celebration at the nation's capital. this independence day marks the first time that the public has been allowed to the top of the nation's symbol of freedom. 270 lucky visitors became the first to climb to the statue of liberty's crown. >> it didn't really feel like 354 steps. it was short, but very narrow and steep. >> reporter: one couple even took the opportunity to get engaged. >> it's unbelievable. >> reporter: it was also a day steeped in tradition. in washington, d.c. the national archives read aloud the constitution and the declaration of independence. >> for imposing taxes on us without our consent. >> reporter: in boston people are arriving for the 4th of july cob sert, and in cone knee island, joey chesnut kept his

crown by eating a record 64 hot dogs in10 minutes. >> now i have to think about our barbecue. as americans celebrate some have been hard at work right here in baltimore. pie rough technicians have been working very hard prepare ring. for the first time ever a computer system is going to run the display. the first flash goes off at about 9:30, and the naval academy band electric brigade will perform. you can get good views in canton. the weather is a key player in tonight's even. taking a live look outside, a bit cloudy, but is anything else coming our way? let's check in with meteorologist bernadette woods. what's gonna happen, bern? >> so far so good. you see a lot of boats out there enjoying the day, but the clouds are thickening. nothing in the state so far. we still after few hours, but take a look just off to the west. this is the rain approaching us. the storm is generally going to

take somewhat of a southern track, cutting through virginia, but close enough that we do expect rain to arrive late overnight into tomorrow. we think it should hold off for the fireworks, unless you're in extreme western parts of the state. could be a little bit more iffy there. we have a couple hours to go, so looks like the timing will hold off. >> gonna be close. thanksp bern. the three-day holiday weekend, while fun, could also we dangerous, as drinking and driving has many deadly consequences. police are out in force trying to make sure you get home safely. >> reporter: the countdown is on to what's touted as one of the biggest fireworks shows in the nation. and city police are making sure everyone stays safe. >> we have 480 closed-circuit television cameras that will be monitored. we will be in command centers. foxtrot helicopters will be out, motors, horses, an

extremely high number of uniformed officers. >> reporter: the increased police presence is a precaution. with weekend celebrations qusm deadly consequences, as the holiday is known as one of the most dangerous for drinking and driving. 44% of all deaths on the 4th of july, labor day, and new year's eve are alcohol related. while memorial day, christmas, and thanksgiving have slightly less deaths directly related to drinking. >> you've heard it before. if you are drinking, don't get behind the wheel. find a designated driver, or pick up the phone and call a cab. >> we want people to come down, enjoy themselves at the inner harbor, but we also want them to be responsible. >> tonight there will be an additional 100 taxis on city streets. >> we're the largest taxi coyne baltimore city. we feel like we've got an opportunity to do our part to keep the city safe. >> yellow cab is picking up the tab and will take passengers up to 50 miles away. if you need help getting home, police officers will be on hand to help you find a cab.

the death toll from a shooting rampage has risen as a south carolina teen has now died in the hospital, the victim of a suspect ised serial killer on the loose in south carolina. the search is still on. residents have have been

canceling holliday plans, fearing that the killer is still on the loose. a public memorial for michael jackson will be held on tuesday but the deadline for tickets ends at 9:00 tonight. so far more than half a million people have registered hoping to snatch up one of the 17,500 free ticket. the chosen few will get to attend the memorial service inside the staples center or the neighboring nokia. back here in baltimore, the weather and the weekend work together to bring a large turnout to dozen of 4th of july celebrations. tonight gigi barnett explains one of the oldest and largest ones is in dundalk. >> reporter: in dundalk there's one time of year when neighbors line the streets hours before an event on independence day. >> the dundalk parade is the place to be on the 4th of july. >> reporter: and this year clear skies contributed to a high turnout. >> we've had years past where it's 90 degrees and 97% humidity, and you just die standing up here, but we do

this parade rain or shine. >> reporter: for some, the celebration is a nuisance. for others, a tradition to pass on and a chance to say thanks. >> this is the only time we actually sit down with the kids and enjoy ourselves, no fighting or pushing. >> reporter: the parade is one of the oldest in maryland. at a time when many cities are canceling parades, dundalk's is getting bigger. >> if we ever canceled, we'd have a small riot on our hands. >> reporter: the dundalk parade isn't the only one around. bikes and strollers greeted neighbors with the fire truck in the lead, one of a dozen local 4th of july celebrations this year. and when the fun is finished, planning for next year begins. >> looks like a lot of fun. the dundalk 4th of july parade

began back in 1934. let's check in with meteorologist bernadette woods. >> right now in the city, we've got about three 1/2 hours, three to three 1/2 hours or so. i think the rain is going to hold off for us. farther west in cumberland, out in oakland, may get in there by the time of the fireworks. >> going to be close. temperature-wise, fantastic. 82 did he grows, the humidity is incredibly low with dew points in the mid-50s. we will have your forecast when we come back.

. i'm not complaining. it was a nice day. but it wasn't one of those hot, hot summer days that made you want to jump in the ocean. >> this is where we differ. i think it can be better night.

like it about five degrees night. think you like florida a little bit more than i do, too. humidity was a little low. >> deserty feeling. >> 84 was our high. close to the average. the real difference, the humidity was coin credibly low. the dew point down in the 50s with a breeze out of the northwest. made it feel pretty comfortable outside if you weren't in the son. 85 degrees in ocean city. because of the wind coming off the land. it's the west-northwest wind we've had today, and it's been breezy. actually, it's starting to come down today. at the same time the clouds are starting to increase because of a storm out to our west. these clouds are going to take over as we head into tonight, and not that far away there is some rain. we think for most of us tonight we're going to escape tonight still pretty dry out there. out to the west is our real

question area, box about three hours from now this is going to get into western maryland. for the rest of us, we think we're going to be okay, but overnight the rain will start to move in, and then as we head through the day tomorrow this storm is dog to pass by. the center of the storm will pass by to the south in virginia but it will be close enough to that you say we are going to see clouds, occasional rain, and the farther south the better chance you have of seeing some of that rain. it will last into early monday before this storm does get out of here for monday afternoon. so far the forecast looks like this. the clouds are starting to take over. 62 for our low. tomorrow 76 for the high. sought will be a cooler day tomorrow. this may be a little bit too cool four, adam. 76 degrees in july. the next few days we do go up. monday up to 84, same thing on tuesday. as we head toward the end of the week there's a chance we could be getting close to 90. >> i like that.

major breaking story from the sports department. steve mcnair found shot to death in nashville, tennessee. stan's been tracking the new information. a little bit more about where he was fund and possibly who he

was with. >> well, this condominium, from the reports today is located in downtown nashville near a lot of night spots and restaurants and so forth. i think he said there's a resurgence going on in downtown nashville. >> but they don't know if this is his condo yet, do they? >> details still trying to be sorted out. in case you haven't heard, steve mcnair is dead, found fatally shot on this 4th of july with a bullet wound in the head at a downtown nashville condominium he was known to frequent. he came to the rains in '06. in his first year here he led the purple birds to a 13-3 record before baltimore fell to the colts in the first round of the playoffs. may 2007, mcnair a passenger in a car pulled over in tennessee for suspicion of drunk driving driven by his brother-in-law. as the law requires in tennessee, both were arrested, but the case was eventually dropped. in april of last year steve

mcnair announced his retirement. he and a female victim found dead. they're not releasing her name. steve mcnair dead at the age of 36. he was born on valentine's day of 1973. moments ago his former teammate derrick mason talked about the tragedy. >> he was a guy that was happy, just would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. very generaller ow.s that's what i think made it special for me, because i knew that if he could help you, he would. >> okay, meantime let's switch horses now. baseball, last night in anaheim the orioles bandaged a two-game losing skid. major league baseball's best hitting team with runners in scoring position, yes, the orioles, skated past the
