mcnair murdered. the star quarterback shot four times, his young lover dead near a gun. tonight the evidence has police searching for answers as fans and players are left in disbelief. good evening. i'm adam may. that's what people are talking about this weekend. shot twice in the head, two more times in the chest. that is how a close friend found former ravens quarterback steve mcnair. now police are still trying to determine if this double killing is the result of a lovers quarterly. tonight eyewitness news is live outside the stadium that mcnair once called home. weijia jiang has the latest. >> reporter: at this hour police are not calling this a murder-suicide, but they say that could change as they continue to investigate this

shocking love affair. nashville police say they are not looking for suspects in steve mcnair's murder. they say his wife was not involved. investigators stopped short of calling it a murder-suicide committed by mcnair's 20-year- old girlfriend. detectives found sahel kazemi dead near mcnair. >> ms. kazemi was hit one time in the head. >> reporter: the two even owned an escalade together. >> things happen to people and we don't know why but it was very shocking for baltimore. >> reporter: especially shocking for his former teammates. mcnair ended his career by leading the ravens to a 13-3 record and an afc north championship. >> he would give you the shirt off his back, if you needed it. very generous. >> as a play, there's no tougher quarterback. >> reporter: wjz was there when

he bid an emotional farewell to the team. >> what a great ride what a great ride. it was a great ride here for these short two years. you talk about family, you talk about respecting each other, the love in this building is unbelievable. >> reporter: mcnair went on to say retiring from the ifns are and football altogether would let him focus on his other true love, his family, which includes four sons. >> i think that is the saddest part of it all, the kids growing up without their dad, you know. he was a really good ball player for baltimore, and we'll miss him. >> reporter: kazemi's sister tells a newspaper that she and the former quarterback were going to get married that he was going to get a divorce. of course, police say it is too soon to confirm any of those details. live in baltimore, weijia jiang. >> weijia, thank you.

for instant updates on the mcnair murder and to send us your thoughts on the tragedy log on to wjz.com. well, puzzling accident today involving the light rail in baltimore county. a teenage boy died, and another was seriously hurt on the tracks but tonight investigators still don't know how. a teenage boy killed, another seriously hurt, found on the light rail tracks about 100 yards south of the lutherville station. >> he was a fare inspector that just happened to be looking out the window and saw two bodies lying inside the southbound truck. >> reporter: transit officials spent sunday afternoon inspecting the undercearms of trains looking for any evidence of a collision astin gourd teen was flown to shock trauma. just how the teens ended up in this situation is a puzzling question. >> we are fairly confident they were not passengers. we just don't know what circumstances led them to beg on the tracks. >> there is limited visibility in the area because of turns in the track, but that still doesn't explain why the teenagers wouldn't have heard the light rail coming.

tonight the mta is asking passengers that may have been on board a light rail train in this area this afternoon to call 410-454-7720. they're asked to call if they saw anything unusual while riding today. a double stabbing ends with two teens injured and the suspect already behind bars. derek thornton has been charged with murder in addition to assault. investigators say he was involved in a stabbing last night at baltimore and charles streets. an officer patrolling that area noticed the attack and responded quickly. >> this 33-year-old male was assaulting the 19-year-old as the officer walked up, so he was immediately identified, and, like i said, apprehended a short time later. >> police say the 14-year-old suferd some nonlife-threatening injuries. a 19-year-old is listed in critical condition at shock trauma. two people are found dead inside a burning house, and now officials are trying to figure out how they died. fire officials say around

midnight they found heavy fire in a home in upper marlboro. people were reportedly trapped inside. they later found one body on the first floor, another in the basement. one of the victims was burped beyond recognition. the other is an adult male. autopsy results are still pending. parishioners from baltimore city's bethel ame church are forced to hold services elsewhere after a fire rips through part of their church. tonight jessica kartalija reports that parishioners say the damage could have been a whole lot worse. >> reporter: the doors at bethel ame church are closed on this sunday morning, this just two days after a lightning strike to the steeple caused a fire to spread through part of the church's bell tower on druid hill avenue. >> the rain and the storm caused this to catch on fire, but the damage is really all on one side. >> reporter: mayor sheila dixon attends services at bethel, the city's oldest african-american church. officials hope to have the church repaired sometime within

the next two to three weeks. in the meantime, services are being held here at pier 6 pavilion. a popular place for concerts became a holy sanctuary. >> bethel is a lovely church. it's old, and it's just nice to see old, historic buildings like that but it's sad to see that it caught on fire. >> it's very important, because it's unfortunate what happened to the church, so i'm out here to show my support. >> the church's pastor, dr. frank reed, gave thanks that no one was killed. >> i feel very positive. i thank the city for all their support. i thank my pastor for being the leader that he has been through all of this. >> reporter: pastor reed's wife, lady marla, said the fire could have been tragic. >> god showed us great fair. we just came out of 30 days of prayer an worship, and had it been one more day we could have very well been in the sanctuary at the time that the fire broke out. >> reporter: jessica kartalija, eyewitness news. >> the church hasn't put a

dollar amount on the damage but they're hoping the building could be repaired in the next three weeks or so. since that storm most of us have had a break from the rain for at least a couple days. taking a live look outside, it's dry, actually kind of cool for july so let's check in with meteorologist bernadette woods. she's live with the updated conditions. >> hello, adam. the farther south you went, did see a couple showers. in the city, none of it. it's on it's way out to sea at this point, taking the clouds with it. the farther south you go, the more clouds you're seeing. the farther north you go, they're already breaking up. could see some fog form overnight, then we have a warmup. we'll have your forecast shortly. >> bernadette, thank you. a big international trip. president obama is enroute to russia. the first family de parted for a week-long overseas trip. in advance of these talks obama told the russian opposition is

newspaper that human rates and the rule of law should play a role in improving moscow- washington ties. an arms control treaty expires this december. meanwhile the ousted president of honduras departed washington, d.c. in hopes of returning to his country, but instead tonight the jet was not able to land in honduras due to military vehicles stationed along the runway. the pilot was forced to land in neighboring nicaragua. he was in america for a meeting of the organization of american states. they have condemned the june 28th coup that has sent him into exile. the former mayor of washington, d.c., marion barry, has had another run-in with the law. he was taken into custody after a woman flagged down an officer and complained that barry was stalking her. tonight barry issued a statement through a

spokesperson. >> council member barry is no stalker. let me repeat that. council member barry is no stalker. instead, he is someone who has lended his hand to assist, which in the end has come back to bait him. at no time, at no time has mr. berry had contact with this woman, ms. donna watts, that was not consensual. >> now, the spokesman went on to say that the charges against barry are baseless and he plans to fight them. the wait is final over for 17,500 fans of michael jackson. tonight karen brown reports for wjz, they are the lucky ones picked by a lottery to attend his memorial tuesday at the los angeles staples center. >> reporter: michael jackson's rehearsals for concerts in london were more than what they seemed. cbs has learned he had big plans for the future. >> he said, frank this is our

tragedy at disney's magic kingdom when two monorails crashed killing one person. the victim has been identified as a 21-year-old college student who was operating the monorail. five passengers suffered minor injuries in the early morning crash. disney tonight is not saying what went wrong or even explaining how their monorail system works. this is the first fatal crash in the monorail's 38-year history. he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and tonight an indiana man is very lucky to be alive. robert norman was getting money for lunch from a chase bank when an armed robber held up the place. while norman ran to get the license number of the get-away car that's when the suspect is shot him in the face. amazingly, norman survived. >> i could have died. all did he was break some bones in my jaw and the bullet has to stay in my neck. they don't want to take the risk of damaging anything, so

i've got a souvenir, the doctor said. >> lucky guy. norman faces surgery on tuesday. police did catch one the suspect shortly after the shooting. he confessed to the crime, and he said he needed the money to pay his rent. small town south carolina residents are keeping their homes shut very tight tonight with a suspected killer still on the loose. the town of gaffney remembered a mother and daughter today. they are two of the five victims. police are advising residents not to open their doors to strangers, and sales people are not knocking on doors, either, for fear of their own lives. >> right now i'm staying away from cherokee county because i don't want to knock on doors and approach people that are already in fear and don't want to open their doors to other people. >> a 15-year-old became the fifth victim yesterday. she and her father were shot thursday night 18 furniture store some residents say they are taking extra precautions such as keeping guns in their homes and cars just in case

they have a run-in with that man. >> walking aids like canes may hold a hidden danger for older americans. every year falls involving walkers and canes land more than 47,000 americans in emergency rooms. researchers say that doctors should take more time teaching patients how to use them properly. with just weeks into the hurricane season forecasters have a new tool to study storms. nasa wrapped up all the major tropical events of 2008 into one serious research project. >> 3, 2, 1, and lift i don't have of the delta iv rocket. >> reporter: with that the newest generation of satellite technology is sent into space. it's a combination of weather satellites and will study

tropical storms in the atlantic basin. >> they stand off the earth about 22,000 miles and take images in both the visible and infrared. >> reporter: that data is used by the national weather service to provide forecasts helping protect your property and life. the entire 2008 season has been compiled as a movie. important to study even though 2009 predictions are for an average nine or ten named storms. >> with those satellite images, again, we can look at rainfall in a storm, rainfall intensity. we can see flooding potential. we can look at sea surface temperatures. we can actually see how fast the winds are rotating. >> reporter: the satellite will not always be used but will remain in orbit at the ready. but during sits mission it will work for three primary goals. preparedness, warning, and prediction. and particularly this year in maryland the technology may be extremely helpful.

>> even a hurricane, just a tropical storm, the remnants coming up through maryland could cause a lot of problems for us. we have had so much rainfall this spring this early summer. the reservoirs are full, the ground is saturated. it won't take much additional rain to cause serious flooding problems. >> reporter: for now, it's wait and observe how the forecast goes. tim williams, wjz, eyewitness news. >> wjz is always on, so for a link to that nasa movie site log on to the local news section of wjz.com. meteorologist bernadette woods with us. just got in from outside about an hour ago. it's refreshing. >> it was 10 degrees below average today as far as temperatures go, and this is july. that's one thing with this weather pattern. we haven't had a whole lot of days with that high humidity and heat. want to show you right now what we've got going on. this is the storm that passed off to our south today, and did it have showers with it.

the farther south you were, you had a few showers is and a lot more in the way of clouds. you head over the border in pa, and there's a lot of sunshine. in this city we had a mix of clouds and sunshine with most of the clouds staying off to our south. with that storm moving through the winds turned around to the south but they're starting to day down. we could see some fog form because of that. temperature-wise, we've also been held down. we didn't get up all that much today, and we're not dropping as much tonight. still hanging on to 72 degrees in ocean city. it's 67 right now in baltimore. we only got to 77 for our high. the average high right now is 87 degrees. so here's the situation. here's the storm strung out to the south. notice there's a front off to the north. there's not a whole lot with this front, but we're going to be affected by both of these systems over the next few days. first up is the southern storm. it gets out of here, and when it does we have some sunshine return for tomorrow. but then this front comes through on tuesday. it will bring some additional

clouds through with it. there's not a whole lot of moisture to work with, but we could see a shower or thunderstorm pop up later in the day tuesday with that front passing through, then behind it we cool down once again, and we could see, depending on the progress of this, the chance for a shower lingering into wednesday, and if that happens, temperatures will be even cooler on wednesday. now before, we even get to that, tonight going down to 60 degrees, patchy fog is possible, then tomorrow 85 for our high. over the next few days we stay in the mid-80s before that next front comes through. when it comes through, depending on the timing of it, could see a few showers linger into wednesday. now we keep our temperatures down, but by the end of the week we do after warm-up coming our way. >> all right, bernadette, thank you. next in sports, stan saunders will have all the

an unusual group of war reenactors in michigan used water wons as their weapon of choice in a throw-back to the revolutionary war. 2,000 people threw 40,000 balloons, red battling blue. and you might want to call this a flashback to the cave-man- days. it is the world wife carrying championship games. yep, that's happening. a 36 competitors from 13 different nations took part. this is in finland. some of the participants were apparently from the u.s., but none of them were bringing home the top prize. not this year. i think it stays with those crazy fins.
