a funeral fit for a king. >> the world pauses to pay tribute to the life and legacy of michael jackson. >> hi, everybody. i'm kai jackson. >> and i'm sally thorner. here's what people are talking about today. >> michael jackson memorialized. a gold casket carries the king of pop to the staples center, where some of the fans of the biggest names in music pay tribute. the world says goodbye to michael jackson. our coverage begins with terry teri okita, reporting from los angeles. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: michael jackson got a sendoff fit for the king of pop. jackson's brothers, wearing a single, sequined glove, helped wheel his golden-draped casket to the stage.

there were tributes to the life of the pop star. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: queen latifah spoke on behalf of all of jackson's fans. you believed in michael, and he believed in you. he made you believe in yourself. >> reporter: motown legend barry gordy brought the crowd to their feet. >> i think he is simply the greatest entertainer that ever lived. [ applause ] >> reporter: the family held a private funeral at forest lawn cemetery. los angeles police shut down part of the freeway for the motorcade here. about 17,000 fans had tickets to the tribute. those who didn't just wanted to be close to the biggest sendoff of all time. >> everyone wanted to remember

him. it just feels good. >> reporter: they featured salutes from magic johnson, stevie wonder, all paying tribute to a life. >> at the end of today's tearful tribute, one of hical's children -- michael's children, very rarely seen in public, took the stage with one of his brothers. >> it had to be the most emotional moment of the funeral, he spoke on behalf of jackson. then his oldest daughter, parris stepped up to the microphone. >> ever since i was born, daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine. [ crying ] and i just want to say i love him. so much. [ crying ] >> michael's sister janet then consoled the young girl and

thanked the public for their support, and left the stage emotional. >> don't miss michael jackson, the last dance, following eyewitness -- then following that, eyewitness news at 11:00. a stunning twist in the murder investigation of steve mcnair. tonight, police confirm he was threatened with his life shortly before he was found dead. adam may is live with the latest. adam? >> reporter: pretty major loose ends in this investigation could explain why investigators are cautious about labeling this a murder-suicide. >> reporter: soon before steve mcnair and his girlfriend were found shot to death inside his national city condominium, we now learn he had a serious confrontation while bar hopping. we have learned that a woman claimed he slipped her the date rape drug. police are looking into it. >> we are going to be questioning persons who were

there, the management and the staff that is on the list to do. >> reporter: relatives claim the relationship was healthy, saying mcnair took her on vacation, spotted her a car, and promised he would leave his wife for the waitress. if that plan wasn't true or broken, however, it could be a possible motive with the double killings that ended with mcnair shot dead. the initial evidence points to murder-suicide. >> she clearly could have done this to herself. >> reporter: and police point out to a gun she bought herself. >> we are continuing to conduct ballistics and gunshot residue testing. that test suggest not complete. and the classification of miss casimi's death is not made until the tests are done and results are back. >> reporter: so far, mcnair's wife michelle have not commenting on the status of

their marriage. there is no record of a divorce. but we can tell you that their multimillion dollar home in nashville was up for sale. >> we have a lot more coming up on eyewitness news at 5:00. we'll explain why police say they have a major concern about something that happened inside mcnair's house before the call to 911. baltimore county police release the identity of a man who drowned in chink creek monday. 19-year-old beatrice hart suffered a seizure while trying to swim across the creek. an autopsy is planned. was it a suicide pact or a stunt gone wrong? police continue to look for clues in the deaths of two teens on the light rail tracks in baltimore county. weijia jiang has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: crews have been on the scene all day. they are collecting evidence and taking measurements. but how the boys got to the track and exactly what killed them is a growing mystery. >> reporter: for the loved ones

of the two 17-year-olds found dead on the tracks near the lutherville station, not knowing why they died is agonizing. hunter peterson's family tells wjz an autopsy report shows he died of blunt force trauma. the teen was taken to shock trauma where he died monday. kyle winkmiller died monday. officials have yet to determine a cause of death for him. the two teens were like brothers. police haven't mentioned whether they recovered the bikes. and how they got to the tracks is a mystery. >> they were found lying inside the tracks. generally, when someone is struck by a train, they're knocked to the side or something. we're still trying to understand the circumstances that got them there. >> i feel like it was foul play and someone just put them there. >> how did they die? upper they shot -- oorp they shot -- were they shot? thrown on the tracks? >> kyle's mother says we love them. we hope someone will come

forward so the family can have closure. >> reporter: the mta says they have found markings on one train. but have to be careful. they are also going through video surveillance. reporting in lutherville, weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. kile would have been in 11th grade. conner would recently receive his ged. we have breaking news about a well-known catholic school. it is closing permanently. we have not been told a reason why the school is closing. towson catholic is baltimore's oldest catholic high school. it was founded in 1992. and is where basketball great carmelo anthony was. we have more tonight at 5:00 and 6:00. local surgeons take part in the largest series of multikidney donations ever. the last in a series of operations took place last night.

dr. robert montgomery says 10 doctors performed surgeries. they took about three weeks to complete. and all patients are doing well today. today's weather is just the right medicine for anybody who needs it outside. it's sunny and warm and continues to be dry and comfortable. eyewitness news has weather and traffic together. bob turk has the updated numbers from first warning weather. temperatures about the same. take a look at radar. that's why we have such a nice breeze now out of the west and northwest. to our north, that's where we're seeing showers and thunderstorms, around new york area, up to albany and boston. and those folks are going to have to deal with that for a while. for us, we have cleared out for the most part. dryer conditions coming in. and tomorrow, looks like the same pattern. dry, sunny, beautiful, dry weather. no complaints in this quarter. another wet day, particularly from new hampshire and vermont. and eastern mass up toward maine. that's going to be cool and cloudy up there.

heavy flooding in china has forced people to live their homes. cars are abandoned in the

streets after days and days of heavy rain. government officials estimate about $31 million in damage. police believe a meth lab explosion is to blame for ripping out an entire wall in mobile, alabama. he and two other men were allegedly running the drug lab. luckily, motel operators say no guests were staying in the room next door. the serial kill terrorized a small town is dead. investigators want to know what motivated the crimes and whether there are more victims. >> reporter: police are certain the men wanted for killing five people and terrorizing a south carolina town is dead. the investigation can prove that mr. burris was near all three crime screens on the days and times of the murder.

>> patrick tracy burris's alleged killing spree came to an end near gastonnian, north carolina. in the middle of the night, a couple spotted a suspicious suv. -- suv. >> it kind of favored the vehicle we were looking for. >> reporter: burris gave police a fake name, then tried to pull the gun on officers who tried to pull him over for a parole violation. >> it shocked me when the gun went off. >> investigators say the gun burris used was the same one used by the gaffney serial killer. >> we're still trying to ascertain as to what connection he might have had or why he may have targeted these individuals upon. >> reporter: police say the 25- year-old has a 25-page rap sheet. >> the investigators will need to find out why this person is ought on the streets.

susan roberts, wjz eyewitness news, gastonnian. police believe it is believed he shot people at random. a rough day on wall street. talk of a possible second government plan. dow is down 161 points. s&p down 18. and the nasdaq down as well. let's go to new york where drew levinson has tonight's cbs money watch update. consumers are having more troubles paying their bills. the american bankers association sees the increase in the number of people missing payments on their loans. that bumped the rate of delinqencies to a record high in the first quarter of the year. the banking industry continues to blame the rise in unemployment, saying when people lose their jobs, they can't make their payment. that feeds into concerns that the economic recovery might be farther away than investors had

hoped. and that's putting pressure on oil prices. traders worry there will be less demand for energy. crude dropped more than is $6 a barrel. that's down. world leaders gather in italy for a two-day summit. the meeting gets under way tomorrow. and finance ministers are expected to discuss their straj -- strategy. the city of los angeles is asking michael jackson fans to tribute to the cost of today's giant memorial service. security will bump the price tag into the millions. so the mayor set up a website for donations and is hoping citizens will help foot the bill. in new york, i'm drew levinson. microsoft has issued a new warning today, affecting millions of users. hackers are exploring a security flaw.

overnight. and we've got low humidity. once again, that's what make its comfortable. even though the temperatures, 87. the dew point is 50 degrees. that is very low. humidity only 27%. in fact, when you take a look at the temperature and the dew point, it feels cooler than the temperature. it's sort of a -- winds to the west. drying out. barometer on the way back up. around the state now, a lot of sunshine. just a few passing clouds. 81 in cumberland. 74 in oakland. just got a report of deep creek lake, at the lake, 68 degrees now. ocean city coming in at 80 degrees. a lot of sunshine down there. the dew point once again, very low. yesterday, a dew point was up to 57. that's still nice. by the weekend, by saturday, that dew point may be up to 70. and you will feel the difference. you will feel the humidity here on saturday and maybe because of that humidity and increased

moisture in the air, probably a pop-up shower. right now, dry conditions. a lot of sunshine. 81, westminster. 84 over on kemp island. look at that nice breeze. 10, 15, 20 miles an hour. to the south, winds are southerly. that will be shifting to the front. that will continue to move to the south and southeast. with these nice northwest breezes bringing in dry air. all the action, with this front, as far as showers showers and storms over in new england, new york, massachusetts, maine, up to our north, that's the real area, where we'll be getting pretty good thunderstorms right now. there's chilly air coming aloft. all across western massachusetts. in the mid-60s, with heavy showers and showers and storms. for us, really going upstream. just a few passing clouds. that's about it. and tomorrow, more pleasant weather continues.

♪[ music ] >> i'll never let you part. for you're always in my heart. >> broadcasters seen worldwide from paris to tokyo expect it to be one of the most watched events in history. among those performing were mariah carey, smoky robinson and others. >> hundreds gathered at the enoch pratt memorial library, where the big event was streamed live. gigi barnett tells us what it was like to be with that big crowd. >> reporter: the folks said this happened at 1:00 this afternoon. that was a little after their lunch hour. some people that we talked with said they had to come here

because this was something that they had to see. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: it was a part of history they couldn't miss. this simulcast was a chance to say goodbye to the king king of pop. alt the enoch pratt library. >> this is one chance they got to say goodbye. >> reporter: they watched in the atrium and a three-hour time difference from the staples center in los angeles. others saw the simulcast as a chance to remember the past and jackson's music. >> it's his whole life span. just intrigued me. >> it was more than just what everyone saw on the screen. he was a human being. >> the library says part of the reason they decided to simulcast the memorial service is the increase in michael jackson's popularity since his

death. all of his books and cds have been checked out here at this library. this one is the last one left. >> any time something like this happens, people tend to want to learn more. from books to cds to anything. we're happy they're coming to the library. ♪ [ music ] >> just call my in a minute and i'll be -- my name and i'll be there ♪ >> reporter: some said jackson had a message for them. but today, they have a message to the king of pop. >> it was an enjoyable ride. >> reporter: the library says while some of those michael jackson items have been checked out, the cds and the books, it says it will still try to lend to everyone. >> in addition to everyone watching around the world, an estimated 20,000 people were inside the staples center in los angeles. about 1,000 more were on the streets around the arena.

a special cbs primetime lineup will be held. tonight at 10:00, it's a special 48 hours, michael jackson: the last dance. that will be immediately followed by eyewitness news at 11:00. a convicted drunk driver is being sued after a car crashed and killed five people. but he's not alone. they are also suing the two bars who served him coming just hours before the crash. they say those bars in west virginia, should have known the man, brian stone was already drunk and should have refused him service. stone was involved in a car crash on i-78 in morgantown, killing five people from maryland. major blows were dealt today. sally is in the newsroom with the controversial ruling. sally? >> reporter: denise, the judge ruled today that videos of the alleged incidents cannot be used in the trial. they were found on a phone inside a department store in 2007. they were later turned in to police. today, a judge ruled that the

phone was essentially stolen property. and thus couldn't be used against the defendant who was accused of staging those fights. the prosecution says the decision shouldn't hurt their case because they still have written testimony from people who shot the fight. >> six people in all were charged. same sex couples who were legally married in other states will all be recognized in the states' capitol. congress had 30 minutes to review the bill. they took no action on it, meaning it is now currently law. president obama wraps up his two-day stay in russia, seeking to strengthen american relations in that country. joel brown reports for wjz, this is just the first stop for president obama. >> reporter: president obama is trying to improve america's relationship with russian prime

minister vladimir putin. >> we think there is an excellent opportunity to put u.s.-russian relations on a stronger footing. >> reporter: while putin is no longer president, many still believe he controls the country. russia's current president, demitri med yedev held talks with obama. president med yedev lobbied. >> america's trade with russia is only about 1% of all of our trade with the world. >> reporter: moscow is the first stop on this week-long overseas trip. wednesday, president obama heads to italy for the g8 economic summit. >> reporter: but protests have already started. in rome, demonstrators lit smoke bombs in the streets. and criticized the world's richest nation for not dog enough to turn the world

around. -- not doing enough to turn the world around. >> reporter: after this summit, he will have his first meeting with the pope at the vatican. in washington, joel brown, wjz eyewitness news. >> president obama says he wants russia to be a more democratic nation but doesn't intend to impose the system on the country. i imagine you're just hours away from eating dinner. and the fda wants to make sure the food on your plate is safe. >> reporter: the new safety standards come in the wake of embarrassing standards from breakdowns. among the new rules, the fda will help the food industry establish better systems so that the origins of the contamination can be more quickly traced. and egg and poultry producers will be forced to follow to produce the chance of a salmonella outbreak. also today, we learned that the

wheel street car racing. around the stadiums. and something very different for baltimore. >> reporter: baltimoreans seem to like the idea. >> absolutely. i would enjoy watching it. something that we need some new stuff here in town, i believe. >> reporter: the 2.4-mile course would include parts of white, russell, conway, and camden streets, with a pit area, next to camden yards. what about the noise? >> i said, you know, if we're going to do this, and we're going to do it the right way, we need to make sure that the communities are protected against the noise and the vibrations. so they've studied that extensively. i actually have very few concerns at this point and think we could pull it off. >> the company behind the race says the event would bring 150,000 visitors to baltimore and generate as much as $100 million in revenues. >> i think it would be great for the city. i think it would bring money in and make us more well known, baltimore, definitely. >> they've walked the route. they've met with the state. they've met with the city officials that would be

investigators have made progress. french officials made announcements today that the recorders are too deep to be reached by divers. they will need to send center robots to take over the seven. a plane crashed. and a 12-year-old girl was the sole survivor. people gather to remember the london attacks. bombs exploded on the city's transit system. families, royalty, and lawmakers all gathered in hyde park for the first look at the public memorial. today marks exactly four years stins the todayly blast. kai is live in the newsroom with the details on the outburst of violence.

sotomayor is facing more criticism from the national rifle organization. they have written a letter saying it is not ready to officially oppose her but it does urge senators to question her on the second amendment. now, to the puzzle of why sarah palin suddenly decided to step down as governor of alaska. in a recent twitter update, she said she was looking forward to going fishing with her family. >> reporter: after hear bombshell announcement friday, sarah palin did essentially vanish to the frustration of some alaskans. >> i don't think it's right for her to just disown us like that. >> she's left both supporters and detractors scratching their heads once again. >> and a normally effusive rush limbaugh didn't know what to

make of her. >> i'm not going to sit here and tell you i know what this means because i don't know. i don't know what this is all about, why she's doing it. >> reporter: in fact, the only definitive statement we have is from the fbi, which says she is not the target of a criminal investigation. palin is being targeted with 15 ethics complaints, which some say have worn her down. they say it costs the state some $2 million to investigate. >> it's pretty insane. my staff and i spend most of our day, dealing with this. >> she and i were very much on the same page. >> reporter: says palin likes to shoot from the hip. >> i've never seen her or known her to take advice from others. >> reporter: since friday, palin has looked at this.

there's no haze, no humidity. it's blue sky comfortable. it and will continue, believe it or not, for several more days. but you'll note a big difference. particularly on saturday and saturday night. it's going to be warm. it's going to be sticky. until then, enjoy it. take a look at temps around the region. really, really nice. the key is, the dew point is down to 50 degrees. yesterday was 57. it's even dryer than it was yesterday. humidity, coming in at 27%. the winds, look at that nice breeze. west at 20. barometer 29.72 right now, holding steady. around the state, it's just lovely everywhere. out in garrett county, oakland, 74. deep creek lake, coming in at 68 by the lake. ocean city at 80, with a lot of sunshine. elkton, 82. d.c., baltimore, patuxent. 87. warm spots around the region. 81, upper westminster. tonight, lots of places will be

in the upper 50s to low 60s. open the windows later tonight. and drag in some of the nice, dry, unusually dry conditions. nice breeze. up in the mountains, a few clouds. will not produce any precipitation. all of that is to the north. across northern pennsylvania, northern new jersey, new york area. pretty good thunderstorms now. as the front goes through that region. we'll continue to see that activity for the next several hours. into maine, boston. getting pretty good showers and each hail. closest showers across central p.a. will head across northern new jersey. we will be in the clear. as you can see, not much going on upstream. and tomorrow, pleasant, high pressure moves in. now, by friday night, we'll start seeing a little more humidity by saturday. definitely going to feel it. and that's when we'll see scattered thunderstorms breaking out by this second half of the weekend.
