hi, gigi. >> hi, sally. well, some folks watched the simulcast here at the enoch pratt library on their lunch break. they say even though they missed a meal, this was something they had to see. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: it was a part of history they couldn't miss. this simulcast was a chance to say goodbye to the king of pop. with dozens of enoch pratt library visitors. >> people really had a chance to show their remorse and their sadness. this is one chance they get. they watched from the library atrium and a three-hour time difference from the staples center in los angeles. some brought their children. >> feels weird without him around. >> others saw -- others saw the simulcast as a -- time to remember the past. >> his whole life span just intrigued me. he was more than what everybody saw on the screen and entertainer in the entertainment world, he was a

11:00. and we bring you breaking news at this hour, sky eye chopper 13. what's going on? i'm sorry. we don't have sky eye chopper 13. we'll get back to it. in other news now, new questions surfaced in the investigation of former ravens quarterback steve mcnair. on the 4th of july, the married 36-year-old was found shot to death. his girlfriend dead at his side. eyewitness news has more. adam may has the latest twist on this case. >> this is certainly not an open-and-shut case. police are looking into previous threats to mcnair. and a previous call to 911. >> we are concerned about the time that elapsed between the discovery of the bodies and the time the 911 call was made. >> reporter: at least half an hour went by bench mcnair -- before mcnair's roommate and a friend called 911. police are also looking at what happened at this bar. there, an unknown woman claimed

mcnair slipped her a date rape drug. and she threatened to get her boyfriend to kill the quarterback. >> we are going to be questioning persons who were there, the management and the staffs. that is on the list to do. >> reporter: mcnair was shot four times. his 24-year-old girlfriend who he vacationed with for months had a gunshot wound to the head. so far, allst physical evidence points to murder-suicide. there is no sign of forced entry, no signs of tampering with the bodies inside the house. and cassini bought a gun found at the scene. >> she clearly could have done this to herself. as opposed to steve mcnair, who could not have shot himself four times like. that. >> reporter: a possible motive could have been a lovers quarrel. but police warn they may never know for sure. >> reporter: tonight, police are still waiting for ballistics and gun powder residue tests. those will either concern or rule out more. >> adam, thank you.

cassini's former boyfriend, a manager at a restaurant, was also questioned by police and released. a young child reportedly hit by a car. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene in druid hill park. >> reporter: this is madison avenue. just north of druid lane park drive. this is the scene of a child struck. the 8-year-old child especially was -- apparently was struck by a car. apparently the child was run over by their leg. now, that child has been transported to a local area trauma center. there's no word on his condition. and city police continue to search the area of druid lake park for the automobile that struck the child. back to you on tv hill. >> thank you very much. tonight, we know the name of a young man who drowned swimming off a baltimore county pier. we are live in the eyewitness news room. denise koch with more on the tragedy. the victim has been identified as 19-year-old

cedric hart. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene. baltimore county police say hart was swimming across chink creek. and that's near bear creek in dundalk, when he had a seizure. hart was pronounced dead at bay view hopkins center. an autopsy is planned in the coming days. there are more questions than answers tonight about the two 17-year-olds found dead in the light rail track. weijia jiang has more on the investigation. weijia? today, family members said they believe someone or something other than a train killed these teenagers. and police say they don't have enough information to confirm or deny that. the whole thing doesn't make sense. >> reporter: it's a story that only has one certainty. the devastating ending. >> it's a terrible tragedy for the family. >> reporter: two 17-year-olds, conner peterson and kyle wankmiller lost their lives. they died after a train inspector found him lying on the tracks sunday afternoon.

>> that's a stretch of our track, where it has a greater speed. so a person's reaction time would be a lot less with a train that doesn't have the loud, locomotive engine that doesn't have electricity. and all of that focuses in on how a person could be struck by a train. >> investigators found the damage of two undercarriages. but stops short of saying either struck the boys. >> you have to understand, a lot of these folks are very distraught. >> reporter: boys were found a couple of miles from their lutherville neighborhood. they left sunday around 2:00 on their bikes. right now, police aren't saying whether they've recovered those bikes. >> something went wrong. i don't believe they just stepped out in front of a train. maybe somebody pushed them. or maybe they were already hurt before they were put there. >> why would two boys be on the tracks? >> i feel there was foul play. >> reporter: family members tell wjz, they also believe

their deaths were not accidental. with so many unanswered questions, the mta is not ruling that possibility in or out. >> reporter: you were in the area, surrounding the tracks. maybe in the community. you saw something. we need help in identifying what circumstances led up to those on the tracks. >> reporter: police are still waiting for official autopsy results. although the family tells us, they know at least conner died of blunt force trauma. we're live in lutherville. weijia jiang, weefnlg eyewitness news. wjz eyewitnessnews. >> thank you, weijia. the families are having separate funerals. conner peterson's is thursday, from 2:00 to 4:00. and again, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. the funeral will be friday at 10:00 a.m. kyle's arrangements have not yet been finalized. d.c. metro officials are considering repairs to the red line. but they would not address problems on the tracks. last month's train wreck killed nine people. one train collided with another between the tacoma and fort to

if you're waiting for someone who to commem from work, it's time to check on the traffic. fish and crabs in the chesapeake are harmed by pollution. but a report out today says it could be making people sick, too. the chesapeake bay foundation tells suzanne collins, the epa must crack down on polluters to prevent human illness. on a hot july day, it feels cool to jump in the bay. but the chesapeake foundation says beware. it's that pollution that causes illness in people. bernie boys had a small scrape on his leg. and after swimming in the cepher, -- severn, it turned

into a massive problem. >> the searing pain hits me in the back of the leg. >> he says he feels sure his infection came from fecal matter in the river. it resulted in a wound that left him hospitalized for two weeks. the chesapeake bay foundation says there is more than anecdote alt iferredz. -- evidence. >> it's a soup of bacterial viruses and other things. the waters pose a significant health hisk. -- risk. >> it shows fecal bacteria, natural pathogens and eating tainted fish may be leading to skin and blood infections and intestinal problems. >> reporter: they can enforce the law. they can stop pollution. they can address this. >> reporter: the state does test the fecal levels. 32 beaches were ordered closed

last summer. >> reporter: a scientist contributed to the report. believes the health department needs to test on weekends when people are swimming, because all of that activity stirs up pathogens from the bottom. and he believes the level would be a lot higher. >> reporter: the report calls for more testing of more pollutants to keep people safe. >> that was suzanne collins reporting. now, the group says it would like to see more studies done to confirm that pollution is, in fact, causing this. >> reporter: we have breaking news. sky eye chopper 13 joins us with news of an emergency landing. captain mike perry, what can you tell us? >> we can do it now. mark has the jet lined up with it. all right. chopper 13 is over bwi airport. with an aircraft emergency. we have a southwest airlines jet that was on approach to bwi airport apparently when he struck a very large bird. now, we don't know whether -- at this point whether it has

damaged the engine. but we do have 169 people on this southwest airlines flight, which is now -- actually, it's maneuvering to land at bwi. they currently have all of the emergency equipment at bwi on the ground. and we will stay on top of this situation and keep you updated. right now, it does not appear that the aircraft is in any danger. but they are maneuvering emergency vehicles on the ground at bwi. and this jet will continue to circle until such time as the pilot decides to make a safe landing. we'll keep you updated. back to you. >> thank you very much, sky eye chopper 13. we'll keep you updated on that potential landing. in the meantime, we'll get back to sharon gibala now, for the latest on the traffic on the road. sharon? >> well, sally, fortunately, nothing too serious on area roadways. a bunch of fender benders. one of them reported on the jfx. another on 295 southbound at waterview. in pikesville, a new crash,

we go back now live to chopper 13. just over the emergency landing of a southwest jet. >> southwest flight number 69, apparently departing. we have just learned updated information departing. bwi on runway 28, with 169

people on board. struck multiple birds. we are told at least 40 birds or so are dead. and laying along runway 208. apparently this southwest flight was able to maintain power throughout his climb. he circled around quickly. called in an emergency which we heard through the potomac approach. they quickly handed him backuffa to bwi tower. he took about five minutes or so to get himself set up. and you just saw hill now landing safely on runway 33 at bwi. he has rolled out all the way to the end. apparently no significant damage to the engine that we could tell at this point. but this is what we would call in aviation, a precautionary landing. because he struck so many birds so close to the ground, the pilot decided to err on the side of safety. they have a ground stop at this point. they have a couple of airplanes that are tracked -- stacked up,

getting ready to take off. they cannot do so because of the number of dead birds that remain. it is unclear whether they were sea gulls or canadian geese, which were part of the new york incident. we'll stay on top of this and bring more back to you later. >> at least they're down on the ground. let's check in with bob and a look at our weather. is. >> bright sunshine and low humidity. cool spot in ocean city -- oakland. 82 in cumberland. low to mid-80s. but very comfortable with low dew points. that will continue probably through the rest of the week. but by the weekend, you'll you'll see a big, big change. nice squeeze here out of the west/northwest. continues to bring in very, very pleasant conditions. look like we'll stay on the dry side. just a few patchy clouds. a few out in the mountains now.

good evening, we're still following the breaking news tonight. we go to sky eye chopper 13 over bwi marshall. there was an emergency landing.

a southwest airline 737 landed after mike perry said is it struck about 40 birds. this plane is a work horse. >> channel 13. what do you know? go ahead? loud and clear. >> chopper 13. >> do you hear me? >> captain mike? >> yes. i'm sorry. i had to do some business with bwi tower here. but what you're looking at is aircraft -- personnel from the bwi airport mang that are actual -- maintenance that are actually cleaning up about 40 birds. about 10 minutes ago, a southwest 737 flight 69 was taking off runway 28 at bwi airport. just when it broke the ground, it struck about 40 small birds at this point. it does not appear that they were geese. it appears it was a flock of small birds. after that occurred, the pilot said that he had a bird strike. he declared an emergency with tower, was handed off to potomac approach and they circled him around bwi airport. after the pilot ascertained that everything appeared to be

working because he had struck so many birds, they decided to come in and make a precautionary landing. the aircraft was turned around quickly. pilot was set up for an approach to runway 33 left. they did make a safe landing. we know that there were 169 people on board. there were no reports of injuries at this time. however, it has caused massich delays -- massive delays. runway 28 has been closed at this time. as you can see, there were jets circling them around the field. using the taxi ways to get them to another runway. so there are going to be delays coming out of bwi thurgood marshall. they have a large amount of birds. apparently we are told 40 or so that they are going to have to clean up from runway 28. and once that is done, they will check the runway to make sure it is clear of birds and allow traffic to return to normal operations. but it looks like right now, a

successful landing from a multiple bird strike on takeoff, southwest jet flight 69. back to you on tv hill. >> thank you, captain mike perry, reporting live. we now go to more breaking news tonight. baltimore county's oldest catholic high school closing its doors for good. towson catholic high school will not reopen this fall. eyewitness news is live. kelly mcpherson joins us live with more on the reasons why. >> sally, 160 families are learning right now that they're going to have to scramble to find a school for their student coming this fall. because the school is not reopening. and basically, the diocese says, it comes down to numbers and money. there were 244 students enrolled this past may. it's now down to 163. they're blaming the economy and the trend of lower enrollment in catholic schools. and it was the parish's decision, at emaculate conception not to reopen because they could not come up

with more than $3 gift -- $350,000. >> your soul source of income if is tuition. and you have more than $150,000 that you didn't even collect last year. those things conspired to the perfect storm. and they feel like this is an unprecedented thing for them. they've never experienced this kind of decline in enrollment. >> reporter: this means 20 staff members will lose their job. they'll be meeting tomorrow with school officials. and as for the families, they'll have a meeting next week to try to find the 163 students who thought they were going to towson catholic next year. trying to find them somewhere else to go in the fall, which the first day of school is only six weeks away. reporting live from downtown baltimore, kelly mcpherson, wjz eyewitness news. >> among the people who have attended towson catholic, basketball great carmelo anthony. upholding a prison sentence.

vic is live in our newsroom with the latest. >> leander blake remains behind bars. the appeals court rejected claims by blake's attorneys. said his confession was obtained illegally. they say blake and another man, terence tolbert attacked him. blake was only 17 at the time of the fatal carjacking. >> terence tolbert is currently serving a life sentence for the crime. a guatemala man pleads guilty to transporting a 14- year-old girl to maryland for the purposes of having sex. 26-year-old walter aguilar admits that he drove her last february. he faces several years in prison and deportation back to guatemala, when he is sentenced in october. some relief for residents in a small south carolina town, terrorized by a small serial killer. the suspected killer was shot to death in a gunfight with police. >> reporter: police are certain

the men wanted for killing five people and terrorizing a south carolina town is dead. >> the investigation can prove that mr. burris was near all three crime scenes on the date and the times of the murder. >> reporter: patrick tracy burris's alleged killing spree came to an end 30 miles away, from gaffney, near gastonnian, north carolina. in the middle of the night, a couple spotted a suspicious suv and called police. >> can kind of favored the vehicle they were looking for. >> reporter: burris gave police a fake name. then pulled a gun on officers when they tried to arrest him for a parole violation. >> it really shocked me when the shots started going off. i thought, you know, this guy has got to be crazy to shoot at three police officers. >> reporter: one officer was wounded and went inside the house. but police fired back and killed burris. investigators say the gun bur i guess used was the same one used by the gaffney serial killer. >> we're still trying to ascertain as to what connection

he might have had or why he might have targeted these individuals. >> reporter: they say the 21- year-old has a 25-page rap sheet. >> the criminal justice system is going to need to explain why this individual is out on the street. >> reporter: investigators will also be trying to retrace burris's movements to determine whether there are even more victims. susan roberts, cbs news, gastonnia, north carolina. bur i guess had a longs long list of run-ins with the law. in tonight's eyewitness news healthwatch. researchers are one step closer to understanding why breast cancer spreads. scientists say they discovered key signals that help breast cancer survivors. it could lead to new treatments to prevent the disease from returning. also in healthwatch, a first of its kind procedure in baltimore increases the donor pool. the wait for a kidney is over for eight very fortunate people. >> reporter: doctors here in

maryland have performed similar procedures but never with this many people. >> i have one on hold here. i have a little hole at my belly button. i have one over here. and i have one right down here. this is where they pull the kidney out. >> reporter: johns hopkins employee pamela halk had originally hoped to donate a kidney to a coworker. when she wasn't a match, her organ ended up going farther than she imagined. >> my kidney lived. in peace. in st. louis right now. [ laughter ] >> reporter: eight people who needed a kidney now have one, thanks to a never-performed, 16- person, four-hospital kidney swap. >> we think in the future, this is the paradigm that's going to be used. >> reporter: doctors from johns hopkins first flew a kidney to henry ford in detroit. another to oklahoma city. and a third, pamela's kidney, went to barnes jewish hospital

in st. louis. all n exchange, all three hospitals sent a kidney whack to baltimore. -- back to baltimore. two other organs were donated and transplanted. including the kidney that now lives inside robert brinkman. >> it's hard to describe. but it's truly a marvelous thing. >> reporter: it requires each to need a donor. >> never met him or anything. but evidently, the person is doing great. >> i talked to my recipient this morning. and she's doing fantastic. so it's like i've hit the maryland jackpot. the lottery has come my way. >> reporter: early ther year, hopkins performed a six-kidney, domino transplant on the same day. this time, it took several days. >> if you do a six-way or five- way swap, all in one day, at anywhere except a couple of places in the country, is just not logistically possible.

car series event to charm city. >> drivers, start your engine. indy car racing could be coming to baltimore. those who have seen it say, buckle your seat belts. >> well, it's awfully exciting. i can tell you that. it was really a thrill to see it. and those are airplanes on wheels. on the outside of the front row. >> indy racing league executives have visited baltimore twice for serious discussions. city councilman william cole. >> we're talking about an open wheel street car race in downtown baltimore that would go around the harbor, around the stadiums. and something very different for baltimore. baltimoreans seemed to like the idea. absolutely. i would enjoy watching it. something that we need some new stuff here in town, i believe. >> reporter: the 2.4-mile course would include parts of white, pratt, conway. with a pit area nto -- next to camden yards.

>> i said, you know, if we're going to do this, and we're going to do it the right way, we need to make sure that the communities are protected against the noise and the vibration. they've studied that extensively. i actually have very few concerns at this point and think we could pull it off. >> reporter: the company behind the event says it could bring $150 -- 150,000 visitors to baltimore and generate as much as $100 million to baltimore. >> they've walked the route. they've met with the state. they've met with city officials that would be responsible for pulling this off. and i think they have walked away, both times, thinking that baltimore would be a very good host. >> reporter: ron matz, wjz eyewitness news. if it happens, the race would come to baltimore in october 2011. one of the consultants working to bring the race here is emmy winner al unser junior. first lady makes her mark

shock trauma. and that's bad news. faced with high percentages of fatal aggressive driving crashes for two consecutive years in maryland, the smooth operator campaign focuses on halting a major contributing factor. speeding. >> he is the physician in chief, dr. thomas scallia. >> he was supposed to kick this off. but accidents happen. this time to a 23-year-old. >> i just left the operating room, after taking care of a kid, who failed to negotiate a curve, driving too fast last night and has a horrific set of injuries. and his life is irrevocably exchange changed. >> reporter: scala says drivers must realize that it is a matter of life and death. >> nobody wakes up and says, today is my day to be in a vehicular crash, today is my day to die. but it happens. and it happens way, way, way more frequently than we would
