today. you can probably see washington monument in d.c. here. it's dry. there's no humidity to speak of. no haze. off to enjoy the beautiful weather. let's take a look at temperatures and conditions this afternoon. we got, believe it or not. most people thought it was only the low 80s. we actually got to 88 degrees. which was above normal for this time of year. records, 99 and 53 back in 1980. around the region now. just a few passing clouds. 73, oakland. we're at 85 here. 87 in d.c. 79. beautiful down at the beach. really, really nice weather. the next couple of days. if you're heading down that way. and garrett county will have nighttime lows near 50. chilly up there. 82, westminster. 85, annapolis. and 84 over in rock hall. nice, west breeze here. 5, 10, 15 miles know hour. that front has gone through the

region. winds bringing in more dry, pleasant conditions in the next several days. just a few passing clouds right now. off the organization -- portions of washington county. might see a few clouds in the next few hours. but generally, clear to partly cloudy skies tonight. and just a few passing clouds tomorrow. most of the action, well, some stuff out west. we're not really going to talk about that. but to our north, lots of showers and thunderstorms. new york state. northern pa. northern jersey. buffalo had storms earlier. now it's around boston, connecticut, new york, long island, new hampshire, vermont, and into maine. showers and storms up there, with that low pressure passing well to our north. we are looking at generally northwest flow. that means more dry air. just a few passing clouds. high pressure builds in. pleasant. the flow out of the north/northwest. keeps us from getting the heat and humidity. temperatures down there at 90, 95. humid, afternoon thunderstorms.

all along the gulf coast. eventually, this high is going to start moving off to the east. winds by saturday become more southerly. and that means the humidity will come back. at least for half of the weekend. and by saturday night. look for scattered showers and thunderstorms. in the meantime, northwest breeze tomorrow. 10 to 15. bay temp at around 77. tonight, call it clear to partly cloudy. few clouds. 52 tonight -- 62. beautiful night. lots of sun. a few passing clouds. pleasant and dry. tomorrow's highs, cooler than today. only 84 degrees. lovely for the first week or so in july. still to come tonight on wjz eyewitness news. more trouble for the bay. i'm suzanne collins in anap on theis. -- anap on theis. -- annapolis. crabs and oysters. a new report says that humans could be getting sick, too. i'll have that coming up next.

it is 6:30. just before 6:30. and 85. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. relief for people, terrorized by a serial killer. police believe a career criminal, killed by officers, was the suspected killer. >> police suspect the person wanted for terrorizing a south carolina town is dead. >> the investigation can prove that mr. burris was near all three crime scenes on the date and times of the murder. >> reporter: patrick tracy burris's alleged kilting spree came to an end 30 miles away in gaffney, near gast ownia -- gastonnia, north carolina. someone noticed a suspicious- looking vehicle and called police. >> it looked kind of like what they were looking for. >> it really shocked me when the shots started going off. and i said, you know, this guy has got to be crazy to shoot at

three police officers. >> reporter: one officer was wounded inside the house. but police fired back and killed burris. investigator the say the -- investigators say the gun burris used was the same one used by the gaffney killer. >> we're stilltrying to figure out what his motive was. >> reporter: police don't know the motive but say the 21-year- old has a 25-page rap sheet. >> they will need to explain why this individual is out on the streets. >> reporter: they will also try to retrace burris's movements to determine if there were even more victims. susan roberts, cbs news, governmentonnia -- gas gastonnia, north carolina. lawyers for o.j. simpson are asking their client be freed while waiting for an appeal. >> reporter: simpson's lawyer says there is no risk he'll disappear if he is freed on

bail. he is serving 9 to 33 years. one of the two memorabilia dealers says he wants charges against simpson dropped. the man swore under oath, he didn't promise him anything to change his story in the case. >> a panel of judges will hear oral arguments on simpson's bail request in august. a conviction in a fatal carjacking in anapol i guess. leander blake-- annapolis. leander blake was only 17 when he and another man shot griffin in the head and ran over him during a carjacking attempt. an early morning police pursuit in carol county ends with the driver arrested. police tried to apprehend randy brown junior on outstanding warrants. they say his mother created a distraction while her son fled the scene. brown is charged with numerous

kidney out. >> she had originally hoped to donate a kidney to a coworker. when she wasn't a match, it went farther than she ever imagined. >> my kidney lived, in peace, in st. louis right now. >> reporter: eight people who needed a kidney, now have one, thanks to a never-performed, 16- person, four-hospital kidney swap. >> we think that in the future, this is the paradigm that is going to be used. >> reporter: doctors from johns hopkins first flew a kidney to detroit. another went to first baptist in oak oag city. and a third, pamela's kidney went to st. louis. in exchange, all three sent a kidney back to baltimore. two other organs were donated and transplanted at hopkins, including the kidney that now lives inside robert brinkman. >> it's hard to describe. but it's truly a marvelous thing. >> reporter: the complicated procedure requires each person who needs a kidney to provide a

donor. she gave her kidney to a man in detroit. >> hadn't met him or anything. but evidently, the person is doing great. >> i talked to my recipient this morning. and she's doing fantastic. so it's like i've hit the maryland jackpot. the lottery has come my way. >> reporter: earlier this year, hopkins doctors performed a six- kidney domino transplant on the same day. this time, it took several days. >> if you do a six-way, or five- way swap, all in one day, at anywhere except a couple of places in the country is just not lojestically possible. >> reporter: robert was on dialysis for six months before getting his kidney. >> staples in my stomach. major surgery. and i immediately felt better than i had in two years. >> reporter: dr. robert montgomery says paired kidney donation can lead to an additional 1500 transplants per year. i'm kellye lynn, with

healthwatch. only about 6,000 people are expected to donate an organ this year. but 30,000 are on the list. in a namsz -- unanimous opinion, the committee said she earned a well qualified rating. her senate confirmation begins next week. they have no official role in that process. hay new government recommendation has begun to make the food on your table safer to eat. the obama administration introduced new safety standards. the proposals emphasize prevention. and also how to increase the government's response time to outbreaks. fish and crabs in the chesapeake bay are harmed by pollution. but a new report says it could be making people sick as well.

they tell suzanne collins, swimming and eating fish could be hazardous to your health. >> on a hot july day, it feels cool to jump in the bay. but the chesapeake bay foundation says beware. it says pollution that has harmed marine life also appears to be causing illness in people. bernie voice had a small scrape on his leg, and after swimming in the severn, it turned into a massive infection. >> next morning, about 5:00, the searing pain hits me in the back of the leg. i said, oh, my god, what the hell is this? >> voice says he feels the infection came from fecal matter in the river. it left him hospitalized for two weeks. the chesapeake foundation says there is more than anecdotal evidence, linking illness to pollution. >> the waters pose a very significant health risk. >> reporter: a new report with information from scientists shows fecal bacteria, natural

pathogens and even eating tainted fish may be causing increased infection of skin and blood infection, intestinal illness, liver disease ask even cancer. >> they can enforce the law. they can stop the exclusion. they -- the pollution. they can address the human health impacts. >> reporter: 32 beaches were ordered closed last summer. >> reporter: a scientist says the health department needs to test on weekends when people are swimming because all of that activity stirs up pathogens from the bottom. and he believes the levels would be higher. >> the report calls for more testing to keep people safe. >> the maryland department of the environment says it is working to improve water testing with the epa. and working with the university to improve tracking pollution. well, an update on the breaking news we have been telling you about for the last

violent street battles have killed at least 150 people so far. >> reporter: police are calling this the deadliest ethnic unrest to hit china's western region in decades. the violence is escalating between the muslim minority and ethnic hahn chinese. groups of people could be seen trying to overturn buses downtown. while using hoses to try to control the riders. the government is blaming an exiled minority leader, while others are blaming the government. tensions between the two groups have never been far from the surface in western china, where the militants have waged a separatist campaign. nearly 900 other people have been reported injured in this violence. well, people in

afghanistan's northern cundus province cleaning up. four american soldiers died in the attack. it was just one of a series of deadly incidents across the country, making for the deadliest days for u.s. troops since they invide -- invaded in 2001. a woman ran over a baby with her van. it happened at a campsite on the 4th of july. the woman is accused of drinking and smoking marijuana before she backed her van on a nearby tent, killing the infant, sleeping inside. she is charged with vehicular homicide, as well as dwi. faces more than 40 years in prison. microsoft has issued a new warning today, affecting millions of computer users. companies say hackers are exploring a flaw. it only affects people using windows xp and surfer 2003. still, microsoft says they have not been able to build a patch yet. and caution people not to click

he wished he didn't throw like this one. in the 6th inning. off the wall in left field. o's trail, 2-0. and there was no comeback magic in this know -- in this one. o's were frustrated by jarrod washburn. he throws the game of his life. the lefty allowed one base runner the entire game. it was a nick markakis single back in the fifth. and every other baltimore batter was retiring. a one-hit shutout for jarrod washburn. a 5-0, orioles defeat. i 19, the guy went out. and only gave it the one hit. with one base runner tonight. you took your -- tip your hat to i on -- to a guy like that. >> one of the best in baseball season. i give the guy credit. he was on his game. and boy, he certainly pitched a gem. >> reporter: what washburn did was hand the orioles their fifth shutout this season. birds have lost seven of their
