. trouble on the tracks, emergency crews rush to a light rail station after a woman is hit by a train. this follows the deaths of two teens hit on the light rail tracks. hello, everybody. here is what people are talking about tonight. questions remain unanswered in the deaths of two teens hit by a light rail train and now tonight a new case opens after a woman is hit by a train. eye witness news is live in mount washington investigating both cases. kelly? >> reporter: just as police are asking for help in the lutherville case another person is hit here in [m:ment] washington though in this case it seems the driver saw the woman and tried to warn her with his horn. >> trains are running normally wednesday afternoon when a

woman was hit at the mount washington light rail station. >> i'm here almost all the time. i never hear a train blowing so i looked in my rear view mirror and see a girl laying face down. >> police say the woman will survive. they are still investigating. baltimore cobb county police believe one person could help them piece together the light rail crash they're investigating. two teens died last week after a light rail train hit them in lutherville. the driver never reported the crash. >> we're getting really angry, we get one scenario, another, we get this, that, that's and none of it makes any sense. >> baltimore cobb county police took over the investigation from the mta and believe this passenger can help by explaining his reaction caught on tape. >> we don't want to be assuming whatsoever so that's why we would like to talk to him to find out if in fact he saw anything, if he heard. we just believe because of where he was sitting he may have. >> it's still unclear if the boys were hit by more than one train. >> the boys family says they know how the light rail system

done to stop it. well chaos near the u.s. capital tonight ended with police shooting and killing an armed man. capital police say it started when a 15 year old man refused to stop when ordered and the man then reportedly hit two officers with his car, crashed into a police cruiser and pulled out a handgun. police say they were forced to open fire. a family visiting from oklahoma was nearby when the scene all upfolded. >> i stood back a little bit because of the gun shots. there was so many gun shots being fired the rest of my family got down, everybody else got down. i just stood up behind the tree and started my video camera. >> the two officers hit by the suspects car suffered minor injuries. the capitol was sealed off briefly as a precaution. investigators and travelers alike are questioning air safety after a football sized hole suddenly opened in the passenger cabin of a southwest jet. this comes just months after southwest was fined for not adequately inspecting its fleet

for fatigue cracks. eye witness news investigates with mike helgren. >> reporter: video captured inside flight 2294 shows the hole that opened at 34,000 feet. it's now the center of a federal investigation. people on that plane were so frightened, they drove six hours from west virginia where it made an emergency landing. these are pictures they took on board. >> it was an experience that, you know, you think about what you would do but you really never know until you're in the situation. >> this is not the first time this model boeing 737 has come under scrutiny for cracking. >> it is not just southwest. this particular issue with these airplanes with the cracking is known in the industry. >> the former inspector general with the u.s. department of transportation tells wjz action must be taken. >> some of the aging aircrafts

protocols that cover these inspections did not cover this particular part of the airplane which is ridiculous. >> in 1988, the roof ripped off at aloha airlines plane pulling a flight attendant to her death and just last year southwest found cracks in half a dozen of its 737 and was fined millions for overdue inspections. >> southwest is a very challenging schedule. their planes fly longer, land and take off more often than other air carriers. it puts a lot of stress on the equipment. they need to be maintained. >> the carols say it's critical for every airline. >> people, well like i'm never going to fly southwest again but you can't say that because it could have been any airline. >> the ntsb will look at this particular planes maintenance records and also the flight data recorder and see whether there was any history of metal fatigue. mike helgren, wjz eye witness news. >> now southwest inspected

almost 200 planes yesterday and found no problems. tonights liftoff of the shuttle endeavor looked picture perfect but it was not without its problems. the launch looked smooth but after nasa engineers took another look at the video they realized some pieces of foam fell off the external fuel tank and hit the shuttle. tonight nasa says it appears minor. endeavor will dock at the international space station this friday. new at 11, the former ravens quarterback steve mcnair apparently left behind no will when he died. mcnair was shot and killed by his girlfriend in his nashville apartment on july 4th. according to court documents, michelle mcnair says her husband did not have a will. today a judge ruled she will oversee his estate. michelle mcnair listed herself and two sons and mcnair does

have two other sons with another woman. the h1 n1 virus has claimed another life in maryland today the state health department confirmed a third person died in relation to the virus, also known as the swine flu. the identity of that person is not being released only that it is an adult from the eastern shore who had an underlying health condition. the health department says the number of confirmed cases now stands at 732. a dog set on fire, and left to die. a cat chained down while fireworks explode just two recent incidents of animal abuse in baltimore, incidents some are hoping to stop from happening. eye witness news is live in mount vernon explaining the creation of the new animal abuse task force. ky? >> reporter: these recent cases of animal abuse have provoked as much anger as they have heart break and tonight there's an effort under way in baltimore to stop it. >> in may, this dog was set on fire and burned over most of her body.

a police officer put out the flames but the dog died later of complications. >> he was like fully in flames and there was people standing around but nobody was really doing anything so i just got out of the car and took my sweater off and started hitting him to try to put that fire out. >> in june a cat is chained to a fence and fire woks lit under its head. the cat died. wednesday night, city hall is the location of an effort to stop the abuse. members of the american society for the prevention of cruelty to animals and those in the community look for ways to stop the cruel trend of abuse by forming an animal task force. >> i think we're trying to examine very closely just the state of animals within baltimore, what needs to be done in terms of possibly tightening laws, getting better enforcement, getting better community outreach. >> experts note that those who abuse animals are statistically more likely to hurt people. >> i think the problems with animal abuse in general are

problems often of power and control, people who really feel that they need to demonstrate that they are in control and often they start out picking on the weakest. >> baltimore's animal task force is committed to looking out for the welfare of the animals, something that's in desperate need of america. >> the case of former nfl quarterback michael vick convicted of running a dogfighting ring brought this activity under the national microscope. >> for things like dogfighting it's really about money, the basic motivation behind dogfighting is primarily greed. >> if you're aware of any cases of animal abuse you are asked to call police. denise? >> thank you, ky. the aspca says cities need to give law enforcement the resources they need to respond quickly and efficiently to cases of animal abuse. well, here is a warning. if you're headed to downtown baltimore this summer you make sure and bring your patience along for the ride. that's because the lombard

it is 74 degrees and partly cloudy in central maryland right now. the complete first weather forecast is coming up but an incredible scene on a michigan highway. flames shooting hundreds of feet in the air as a gasoline tanker explodes near detroit. witnesses say the top of the truck hit a bridge that lead to the collapse of an overpass on interstate 75. hazmat crews are still on the scene as the highway is shut down and it's not yet known how many people have been injured. late tonight, an eighth person has been arrested in the home invasion and murder of a florida couple with 17 children. the latest arrest was a real estate agent who was charged with being an accessory. police say she rented the house to two of the people involved

their fin meat in asia. the 11 year old boy brought back to life on an ocean city beach is now out of the hospital. he was trapped in the sand while digging a tunnel yesterday near 37th street. the boy was not breathing when the beach patrol arrived. fortunately they were able to revive him through cpr. today one of the life guards talked about their life saving actions. >> it was kind of surreal. basically just training kicked in and really training helps to kick in right away and start giving cpr and did everything as we needed to do. >> the ocean city beach patrol says sand collapses are one of the biggest threats to children, so much so they distribute coloring books which illustrate the dangers of digging deep holes in the sand. well, 45 years, yes we are that old after the beatles groundbreaking appearance on the ed sullivan show, paul mccart any is back at the very same theatre.

5, barometer at 28.98 falling just a tad and the humidity is coming back, 88-58 today, 87-66 is normal and the record is 102 and 57. around the region, 70's for some reason east and i checked it out, it should be 70 but the computer printed it as 84 but it's only 74, 78 in ocean city, the due point is much higher than it's been, tomorrow it should be back in the 60s which means it's going to feel rather humid or muggy tomorrow and with muggy conditions, the sun and the humidity means we have a chance of scattered showers and storms. southerly winds and they continue to bring in this moisture, out to the west a lot of rain particularly over kansas and portions over indiana but during the last three hours most of it dissipated but the energy with this is headed our direction so we do have a chance of scattered showers and widely scattered thunderstorms and any of the thunderstorms might have some gusty winds and brief heavy downpours tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow

evening, maybe a chance again on friday as another system actually kind of a weak frontal system will move across the region and that would be kind of the focus point so we stay with the warm humid air by friday and by saturday cooling down but additional rain or showers are likely again here on saturday so we do get much needed rain. a small craft advisory just went into effect until tomorrow morning, southwest winds as high as 20 knots in the morning, bay temperature around 78 so for tonight generally clear to partly cloudy, warm and 68 for the low compared to last night and then tomorrow, clouds, sun, warm and muggy, possible showers and maybe a couple thunderstorms, 89 tomorrow which is slightly above normal as we just showed you. the next five days chance of a few more thunder showers again on friday, probably again on saturday, 88 down to 82 saturday and clearing out somewhat on sunday and monday, temperatures 82 only 79 partly cloudy skies here on monday. that's below normal.
