officer shot. bullets fly in a parking lot near goddard space center hitting an off-duty officer and a child. tonight, what set off the violence. hello, i'm denise koch. we're following breaking news right now. three people, including a u.s. capitol police officer and a child, are shot, and it happened just a short distance from nasa's goddard space center. eyewitness news is live in greenbelt. kai jackson just spoke with police. >> reporter: that's right, denise. let's give you a frame of reference. we are right across the street from the goddard space flight center at graney belt road in prince george's county. we want to underscore, prince george's county police were not involved in this shooting. that needs to be said. nevertheless, there was a

police-involved shooting in prince george's county. it claimed several victims including a 12-year-old girl. shots are fired around 7:00 thursday night at the gates of cipriano apartments. police say it began with an argument inside the apartment of an off-duty police officer with ft. myers in northern virginia. >> during the argument, the off- duty officer left the apartment in an attempt to call for assistance. at that point, the roommate was able to locate the officer's off-duty weapon and subsequently ran out into the parking lot and began randomly firing the we haven't. >> reporter: police say an off- duty u.s. capitol police officer just happened to be driving through the complex, saw the commotion, and confronted the suspect with the weapon. >> the u.s. capitol officer observed the suspect in the parking lot firing the weapon. at that point, the off-duty

united states capitol police officer engaged the suspect in an exchange of gunfire. >> and police say the 12-year- old girl who was hit was inside her apartment when she was shot. >> from what we're being told, the off-duty officer's injuries are nonlife threatening. the suspect's injuries appear to be serious, and the 12-year- old girl received a graze, from what we're told, and is expected to be treated and subsequently released. >> reporter: again, summing up, all people involved, the adults all involved were all males. we do not have any names at this point. we don't have any conditions, nor do we know what hospital they were taken to. and again, one child 12 years old. again, a u.s. capitol police officer shot a suspect shot and that suspect was a roommate of an officer at ft. myers in northern virginia but the ft. myers officer we understand was not shot.

initially, there was some confusion from prince george's county police over would was shot. multiple agencies are out here. prince george's county police, homicide detectives investigating, just like in baltimore, even though there wasn't a homicide or murder. they're still investigating because that's part of procedure. u.s. capitol police are investigating, and other jurisdictions investigating to see whether any administrative actions need to be taken out here. so quite a big and confusing crime scene in greenbelt, prince george's county. >> thank you very much kai. we are following more breaking news, this time out of baltimore county where police say a man was shot inside a liquor store. this happened less than 30 minutes angst the 7900 block of bel air road in the white marsh knotting ham area. police say it appears to be a robbery gone wrong but we do not yet know who was shot. we do have a crew at the scene. the fallout from the shooting of a five-year-old girl own a city street is now hitting the juvenile justice system. the accused shooter had a long record of arrests and shouldn't have been on the streets.

mike hellgren has reaction from top city and state leaders to what some are calling a broken system. >> reporter: several 17-year- old lamonte davis should never have had access to a gun or even been on pulaski street the day he shot five-year-old raven wyatt in the head. he had been arrested 15 times before and charged four times while in state custody, but instead of locking him up a judge sent him home with a gps- monitored ankle bracelet, which he cut off. >> the juvenile justice system needs to step up to the plate and evaluate what they're doing with the juveniles. >> reporter: and she's not the only ones criticizing maryland's department of justice. >> the ability for the system to address the level of violence that we see as prosecutors just doesn't exist. >> reporter: governor ordered a thorough review of this

indication. >> what i was most concerned about is the response time when it became evident to us that this particular individual had gone off the gps grid. >> reporter: he says it was eight minutes between when a juvenile services worker noticed the bracelet had been cut and an alert was issued. >> what are we supposed to do? kids can't walk the street, they can't go to school. you know, she was just a little girl. >> reporter: and hat raised new concerns over how many juveniles with violent records cycle through the system and end up right back on the streets. some prosecutors say there should be more detention facilities for 16 and 17-year- olds who are repeat violent offenders locking them up rather than sending them back into neighborhoods. in southwest baltimore, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> juvenile justice officials have been meeting with the vendor that supplies the home monitoring services. another meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, the and we will continue to stay on top of this

story. well, tonight police are asking for your help to find a key witness in the light rail crash that killed two teenagers. here is a surveillance picture of the man. police say he was riding the train that hit the two teenagers. 17-year-old derrick connor patterson and kyle wankmiller were hit july 5th. police are asking that the potential witness give them a call. each day someone in this country is killed on the tracks. this happens despite extreme efforts to keep people from walking along the rails. tonight adam may examines why it keeps happening and how it can be stopped. >> reporter: 17-year-olds connor peterson and kyle wankmiller struck and killed on the light rail tracks. >> the boys walked on what they thought was the safe track. >> reporter: in april, a 14- year-old was hit by a train in

prince george's county taking a shortcut to school. >> and i love them to death and i will miss them so much. >> reporter: last year more than 450 people died on railroad tracks in the u.s., including seven right here in maryland. >> reporter: how big of a problem is this still? >> well, in maryland, it's our biggest problem. >> reporter: dick radcliff is with operation life saver. it's an organization funded by the government and railroad companies to spread the word that walking down all train tracks is dangerous and engineers are basically powerless. >> a 100-car freight train will take a mile or more to come to a stop at 55 miles per hour. >> they would have to see that person standing way down the track. >> and realize that person doesn't know the train is there. >> while many trespassing accidents involve people who are either suicidal or irnd the influence, more than one in four people hit by trains are actually just taking a walk down the rails. the railroad companies spend millions of dollars a year fencing off trespassing hot spots but they call at losing battle saying oftentimes fences

it is 82 degrees in central maryland. convicted killer scott peterson is asking the public to help fund his court appeal. his family sent out this e-mail hoping to raise $95,000. the money would go towards an investigation to help overturn his 2003 conviction for murdering his pregnant wife lacey. peterson is current on death row at san quentin state prison. new reaction to the just released video of michael jackson getting severely burned during a commercial shoot 25 years ago. here's jessica kartalija. >> reporter: this video from "us magazine" shows the moment that michael jackson's life changed. he was filming a pepsi commercial in 1984. in the first take, everything goes smoothly. but watch the 6th take. the pyrotechnics ignite while he's still at the top of the stairs. incredibly, he continues to dance for a full 10 seconds,

even as flames burn away his hair and scalp. this man was in the audience that night. >> michael went down, and everybody went down on top of him, and then people started saying, he's been burned. >> reporter: the severity of the burns are visible at the top of his head as he's rushed off steak. it's believed the second and third-degree burns led to his addiction to painkillers. >> this was when he decided it was okay, and not only okay, but necessary to take pain medication. >> reporter: almost a decade later the pop star acknowledged his drug addiction. >> this medication was initial prescribed for the excruciating pain that i was suffering after reconstructive surgery on my scalp. >> reporter: now pain medication is playing a pivotal role in his death investigation. detectives removed diprivan from jackson's home. officials are to cushion on several doctors including dr.

conrad murray who was with jackson when he died. >> if the police can establish that dr. murray or any other doctor provided diprivan to michael jackson in his home outside of a hospital capacity, then the crime would be negligent homicide. >> reporter: 25 years ago, fans were not informed of the severity of the accident. instead, the most famous image of the day was michael waving from a gurney. it is only now after his death that michael's horrific injuries can be fully grasped. pepsi donated $1.5 million to jackson when he then turned over to a burn center with his name. back to you. >> and the final results of jackson's autopsy could be released at any time. >> tonight the mystery deepens surrounding the disappearance of a high-profile restaurant owner. he owned four steakhouse and sports theater locations, including one inbaltimore county. investigators say he has gone missing and left behind some $42 million in debt.

into the good old chesapeake bay down there in southern maryland, and a few more just off the delaware bay. around here, kind of quiet. looks like they'll stay away. tomorrow i expect to see a lot more activity. take a look at temperatures. # 4, warmest day of the year. 88/66 are the records -- are the normals on this day. 82 now, it's a warm night. 71, comfortable, but the dew . is up to 70 now. so it is a rather humid night. temperatures around the region still in the upper 70s to the low 80s. coming in from twerveghts area of low pressure is going to help develop a better chance of showers and storms here tomorrow afternoon, and particularly tomorrow night as an area of low pressure will develop across southwest virginia and roll across virginia. it gives aus pretty good shot at getting showers and some rains tomorrow night before it clears out saturday and sunday, cleared out, cooler, low humidity looks really nice.
