you'll only see on eyewitness news. good evening. i'm denise koch, in for adam may. and here's what people are talking about right now. shots rang out in west baltimore this morning, as police were searching for a suspect wanted in two domestic violence incidents. eyewitness news is live at shock trauma, where pat warren has the very latest. pat? >> reporter: that's right, denise. mayor dixon arrived a short time ago. one officer shot. one slightly wounded and the other more seriously wounded in what can only be described as a crazy scenario. >> reporter: shattered grass. glass -- glass. a baltimore police officer was able to crawl out of the passenger side and return fire. >> after being wounded in the seat of that car, to pull himself out and to engage the suspect in gun battle, i think it says a lot about the men and

women in this police department. >> reporter: the same calls for same suspects at both. when the second victim contacted the man on his cell phone, an officer was able to talk the suspect into returning. the suspect came back, shot the officer and took off. the man hunts began, when the suspect was spotted by a patrol car at edmondson and whitmore. he jumped out of his car, rushed the police car, and fired point blank at the police car. >> i that was testify like -- i thought it was like a gunman. i was laying on the porch. looking up to see if anybody would open the door. and when they did, the police were out, we started to call in jesus. i was scared. >> reporter: another witness took cell phone video. and witnesses say after the suspect was shot, he was beaten by other officers at the scene. start with hard, steel-toed boots on. and they wanted him on the

ground. >> he had already been shot? >> he had already been shot. >> reporter: commissioner bealefeld says he makes no apology for the outcome of the incident. >> if our men weren't there, who knows what he would have done to innocent people on the streets. >> reporter: mayor dixon is calling the officers heroes. and again, we will be hearing from her shortly. i'm pat warren. back to you on television hill. here's what we know so far. two baltimore police officers were shot while taking a suspect into custody. the officers returned fire, hitting the suspect. now, both officers were listed in stable condition tonight. and at last check, the suspect is in critical condition. wjz is always on. for the latest in this developing story and for updates on the officers' condition, log onto wjz.com. the other big story tonight, legendary news anchor walter cronkite has died at 92 years of age. hari sreenivasan reports for

the boeing 737 arrived last night in dallas. just days after a one-foot hole opened up in the passenger cabin, forcing it to land in west virginia. no one on board was injured during the incident. but it prompted southwest to inspect all 200 737s in its fleet. baltimore county repair crews had a big job on their hands this afternoon, when an eight-inch water main burst. sending water gushing down. at this hour, valley court road is still blocked near oak cross road. the department. public works says most of the neighborhood is not affected by the break. and crews will continue those repairs. well, we are in the midst of a beautiful weekend. so enjoy it. that's an order. here's a live look outside right now. sunny and mild. what about the rest of the weekend? bob turk is live with an updated look at first warning live doppler radar. bob? >> can you believe it? gorgeous. take a look at radar. nothing around here. a few clouds off to the north

and northwest. we're at 83. beautiful breeze. humidity only 32%. take a look at the visible satellite. these are the pop-up clouds. just a few of them. because of the cool air coming aloft. that interacts with the nice, warm air. tomorrow, a mostly sunny day, just about the same as today, and dry. no humidity until next week. we'll have that forecast in a few minutes. denise? >> thank you, bob. well, the battle between bge's parent company and the state takes another turn. they offer a counterproposal to its request. according to our media partner, the baltimore sun, constellation said it would cancel a golden parachute package for its chief executive mayor shaduck. it is also going to ask for a delay in the delivery of the electricity rate. but the governor is holding firm, saying the deal does not

do enough to help bge customers. art scape is in full swing in the mount royal neighborhood tonight. lots of sites and sounds to take in. this is the festival's 28th year. and the city is expecting more than 300,000 people over the next -- over the three days of the festival. art scape runs until 10:00 tonight. starts up again tomorrow from noon to 8:00. the people did flock in during the day. it's perfect weather. coming up on wjz eyewitness news. we are continuing to follow the recovery of two city police officers, shot in a violent confront a with the suspect. we'll have more from shock trauma. tracking down terrorists. authorities still trying to pinpoint the people responsible for a suicide attack on indonesian hotels. old fire stations in disrepair. how the city plans to save them, even in a recession. i'm gigi barnett in northeast baltimore. that story is coming up on eyewitness news.

mayor dixon is in shock trauma now, visiting with the families of the injured officers. one is injured more seriously. he has three gunshot wounds, but he is expected to survive. none of the injuries right now, considered life-threatening. to go over what happened this morning, there were two separate domestic violence calls, involve other the -- involving the same suspect. the suspect shot first one officer in one location. and then in a second west baltimore location, opened fire on another officer as he sat in his patrol car. that officer was hit three times but still managed to get out of the car and return fire. the suspect was shot, and he's in critical condition. reporting live now from shock trauma, i'm pat warren. back to you on television hill. >> thank you, pat. we'll have much more for you on this story tonight at 11:00. indonesia's period today visited the site of friday's bomb blast at two luxury hotels. more than 50 people were injured. investigators continued to search for details as to who was behind the attack.

analysts suspect that the bombing may have been masterminded by a southeast asian militant faction. president obama has condemned the attack and offered support for indonesian leaders. many americans are exhausting their unemployment benefits in predictions of steady woes for the economy. according to the national unemployment law project, roughly 500,000 workers will run out of unemployment benefits. one person says he thinks the national unemployment rate next year will hit 10%. maryland's unemployment rate is currently 7.3%. with no money and deep budget cuts, there has been little hope of renovating until now. some city leaders want to upgrade the firehouses, despite the sluggish economy. >> reporter: built in 1902, fire station number 31, in the city's waverly community, is one of the oldest.

from the outside, an architectural gem. inside, a place no firefighter wants to live or work. >> they are interesting and a good history of the city. but we haven't put enough money into them in the past to keep them modernized. >> reporter: so now, the buildings are crumbling. the air conditioning is outdated. and the paint on the ceiling is chipping. jim clax says years of wear and tear forced firefighters out of the building. while undergoing the $2.5 million renovation. but the city has to get about $2 million federal stimulus dollars first. >> i want them to be as rested and comfortable. because we never know when they'll be called on to help us. >> reporter: building repairs aren't the only things firefighters need. the furniture has signs of emergency care. appliances are old technology. and new cookware in the kitchen is hard to find. >> also, some of the stuff you

see here is hand-me-down for firefighters. and they have to come out of their own pocket to provide that stuff. the city doesn't provide television sets. those are creature comforts they buy for themselves. >> reporter: many of the houses are at least 100 years old. some are older. and while neighbors are wanting them repaired, it's coming at a time when the city doesn't have much money. blame that on the recession. >> if people knew what these officers needed, they would give. and we're counting on that. >> reporter: they are holding fundraisers to save the city's fire house. i'm gigi barnett, wjz eyewitness news. >> they are saying that it is also becoming a health hazard for firefighters and medics. two astronauts take a trip to the space station. this coincides, of course, with the 40th anniversary of man landing on the moon. moon.

what a good look at that shot. it is just beautiful weather. fabulous weekend. the only thing, we didn't get much in the way of rain last night. really hoped to get some. really got about 5/100ths of an inch. some areas did get more. but not that much more. 64 right now. 64 in oakland. 72 in kim ber land. other side of the -- cumberland. other side. region, it's 82 at the beach. pretty nice. dew points very low. at 50 degrees. that is extremely low dew point for this time of year. it looks like tonight, another very dry night across the region, with temperatures dropping back into the upper 50s to the low 60s. right now, around the region, upper 70s to low 80s, just very, very pleasant. winds now out of the west/northwest.

nice breeze all day long. almost felt like september. a few clouds around, particularly this morning, around the ocean city area. they've moved out. right now, for the most part, partly sunny skies. more clouds to the mountains. lifting action of the mountain brings that moisture up. forms clouds. also a very chilly air mass over the great lakes. down to the south, that front stalled out. and eventually, we're going to see low pressure developing along that front. and by monday afternoon, probably a shower or thundershower threat. and that threat will continue, by the way, probably most days coming week. we could see a shower. the moisture content will increase. this afternoon, there are some showers, ohio into western pennsylvania. not going to bother us. for the mind, for the time being. pleasant conditions all weekend long. by monday afternoon, some of these showers look like they might break out. particularly west of us, as the humidity will come back next week. northeast winds on the bay. 5 to 10 knots. tonight, then, clear, comfortable, beautiful.

meanwhile in new york today, former yankee david cone tosses out the ceremonial pitch. current yankees manager, joe girardi. but now we go to the top of the second. here is cc sebathia. that ends the third inning. he lost five hits. but no runs over 7. and the yankees win. over the atlantic. british open, 59-year-old tom watson, still sitting atop the leader board. despite playing on a relatively new, surgically replaced hit. old tom. birdieing in route for a 1 spoon. off by one shot over england's rock. fisher and watson looking to be the oldest pro golfer to win a grand slam event. russia's ivanoff, the winner tonight. american lance armstrong troped

-- dropped from third to fourth, but still trails overall by 8 seconds. chelsea scores first. later, again, chelsea, who will be in downtown baltimore next friday to take on ac milan. final score today, chelsea, 2- 0, over seattle. and finally, what a day. for baltimore native sun antonio freeman. the former poly high, virginia tech, and packers wide receiver, helped them win super bowl 31, with the 81-yard longest super bowl td ever. he's excited about going to their hall of fame tonight. >> i'll probably cry. i'll probably be emotional. all of the people that helped me along the way. and all of the hardships i encountered to get there. and the success i was able to achieve while i was there. it will all probably come to a head and i'll be emotional. and probably shed some tears. but i hope i still have enough
