good evening. i'm kai jackson. adam may is off. here's what people are talking about tonight. a very busy night. we have several breaking stories but let's begin in anne arundel county where police remain on the scene of a serious accident. the location is still meadows drive and jacobs road. that's where police had pulled over a vehicle, and before the traffic was finished, the driver pulled back into traffic, causing the crash. five adults and four children were hurt. three adults were taken to shock trauma with serious and critical injuries. the children suffered nonlife- threatening injuries. that's what we know at this time. city homicide detectives are on the scene in east baltimore where two people were shot a short time ago. one adult male has died. and on south kerry street a

firefighter is injured, battling flames and smoke. firefighters rescued two men inside a three-story brick row house that caught fire. >> they found two victims inside. one male victim who was unconscious, nonresponsive, in respiratory arrest. they handed him over to the care of paramedics who treated him on the scene and rushed him to university hospital. a second victim was fund on the third floor location as well in the front room, unconscious, nonresponsive, in cardiac arrest. >> the injured firefighters was taken to johns hopkins. the vic tim from the building was taken to bayview hospital. investigators are trying to determine a cause. two baltimore city police officers are recovering right now, and the commissioner says they were ambushed and shot by a man with a semiautomatic handgun. tonight wjz uncovers new information about that shooter,

accused it shooter. eyewitness news is live at shock trauma where mike hellgren stays on the investigation and updates the officer's condition. >> reporter: kai, we'll start with that. officer jerome sharette is in stable condition. the police commissioner calls the accused shooter a maniac. this is home video wjz obtained showing accused police shooter sean sinclair wounded and on the ground minutes after authorities say he ambushed officers in west baltimore. and this is sinclair's criminal record, dating back more than 15 years with drug convictions and cases of domestic violence. before saturday, his last brush with the legal system was a peace order that is in effect, granted to an ex-girlfriend ordering him to stay away from her and seek counseling. police say sinclair assaulted two women in domestic violence disputes, leading to the gun battle that wounded two officers. >> the guy walked up to the

police officer's side and started firing five or six rounds into the car. >> reporter: this man not only saw it all but says he grew up with sinclair, who is also known with lover. he asked to us protect his identity. >> what i heard that he may have had a gun. i didn't want to go into, like what are you doing, are you crazy, because you never know what goes on in someone's mind. they can shoot you. >> here's a man who went to two different addresses and terrorized or assaulted two different women. i can't say enough about the despicable nature of the crime and that the heroism by our officers. >> reporter: one of those officers, 17-year veteran jerome sharette was in this patrol car when sinclair fired through the window. >> he was seated in his car. it's very hard to be defensive in that posture. >> it was like something out of law and order, a movie, walk up to the police driver and just let loose. >> reporter: another officer,

curtis mcmillian was released from the hospital. police say sinclair used a 9- millimeter semiautomatic handgun. the mayor told us this once again illustrates the big problem that the city has with guns on the streets. mike hellgren, wjz. >> sean sinclair suffered two gunshot wounds. doctors say they are not life threatening. three baltimore county churches are burglarized this weekend, quite possibly bey the same people. all three in the cockeysville area. the united methodist church was broken into early saturday morning. two offices were ransacked and cash and a safe were stolen. the minister, kimberly hall, spoke about the break-in during this morning's sermon, posted on youtube. >> the other night we had a break-in, along with two other churches, and lord we don't know who these persons were who

came and were so desperate that they had to come into your house. but obviously they're searching for something that cash can't ultimately fulfill. >> two other churches were also broken into. we're learning more about the u.s. haul cost memorial museum shooting suspect. 88-year-old james von brunn spent most of 2005 in jefferson city, missouri. the owner of an art gallery where von brunn sold his paintings says she remembers his rants about hatred of jews and blacks. von brunn faces first-degree murder charges. the operator of a san francisco light rail train is under scrutiny today a day after trains collided. ben tracey reports for wjz, this crash looks a lot like the tragedy that hit the washington, d.c. metro system. >> reporter: some witnesses say it sounded like a bomb went

off. two san francisco light rail trains collided saturday afternoon, sending 48 people to the hospital, at least four with severe injury, including the operator of one of the trains. >> they need to have this area cleared so paramedics can get through. >> reporter: the san francisco l train rear-ended the k train at a boarding platform. it was 2:30 in the afternoon, both trains packed with saturday shoppers. >> i had to spin out of the way. i saw it coming. it was frightening. >> reporter: rescue workers treated some on scene but there were so many they brought in a public bus to transport the rest to the hospital. the ntsb is investigating the cause of the crash and will consider human causes. >> the driver's head was down. he looked like he was asleep or passed out or -- couldn't tell, but he was not looking up. he was not slowing down or braking, no signals, nothing, and you could tell he was not going to stop. >> reporter: this is the fourth major transit crash in the last year. in washington, d.c. last month

nine people were killed when a metro rail train collided with a stationary one. in boston, 50 people were injured when a subway operator who was texting plowed into another. and last september in southern california, 25 people were killed when a commuter train slammed into an on coming freight train. ben tracey, cbs news, los angeles. a body found in the potomac river is believed to be a swimmer missing from last week. a preliminary investigation reveals that the body matches the description of mauricio gren understood dough. mauriciogranado. >> reporter: right where i-95 and i-895 split drivers are see agency big change, and it's not the construction. >> if you don't have gps,

you're on it. >> reporter: last week the exit for 9 # 5 was switched. >> 95 traffic will be traveling south on the left-hand side. the 895 traffic will be traveling on the right-hand side, so it it will be a major traffic shift. >> reporter: it's a big adjustment for large truckdrivers like james key. >> it's harder when, you know, all that mad traffic going on out there and everything. of course, the cars don't yield for trucks, and they'll end up underneath the trailer. >> reporter: the maryland transportation authority says the new configuration does two things. first, it paves the way for more construction on new toll lanes, and it makes the more than 100,000 drivers who hit these roads every day safer. >> the movement will be a change for motorists, because for over 40 years, 895 traffic used to travel south on the left-hand side. >> reporter: extra signs are posted to guide drivers.

officials say the change will take some time getting used to even if it's time spent in rush hour. in baltimore, i'm gigi barnett, wjz eyewitness news. >> the transportation authority is urging drivers to be careful and pay attention to the new signs while they become acquainted with the new lane change. what a way to end a lovely july weekend. outside right now it's mild and partly cloudy. meteorologist bernadette woods is live with the updated conditions from first warning weather. wow, bernadette. >> it has to be pretty incredible. we keep saying it, but it is hard to believe it is july outside. nothing going on in our area. 68 very comfortable degrees outside. winds are starting to calm down, and there's another storm just off to the south. not much to the, but it will be moving our way during the day tomorrow, starting to change things up. we'll have that forecast shortly. >> thank you, bernadette. even with all of our recent rain some local residents will

soon be under mandatory water restriction. tim williams reports water lines in need of repair are largely the problem. >> reporter: rain so far this year has been abundant. more than two inches above normal and counting. >> we have plenty of water right now. the reservoirs are almost totally full so it's not a matter of not having water. >> reporter: so we've had enough rain and the reservoirs are full so what seems to be the problem? according to the department of public works the problem stems from how far customers are from the water that serves them. >> the reason is we're doing repair work, preventive maintenance work, on a major water main, which carries water out to northwestern baltimore county from ashburn. >> reporter: defective concrete plants leading from the ashburton plant limits the capability of delivering a lot of water to the farthest points of the am. and to that had a breaks like this one in lutherville, and the result, mandatory water restrictions until the main is fixed. >> we really appreciate

the oldest daughter of a murdered florida couple has moved back into the family home to raise her 13 adopted brothers and sisters. 26-year-old ashley says it's her mother's wish that she and her husband care for the children, many of whom have developmental disabilities. byrd and melanie billings were killed in their home last week. the home now has new doors and carpeting, locks, and a new security gate. the u.s. military is condemn ago taliban video that shows a young u.s. soldier captured in afghanistan. here are the heartbreaking words. >> reporter: the fear sun mistakeable in the eyes of 23- year-old bowe bergdahl. it's even clearer in his voice. >> i have a very, very good family that i love back home in america. and i miss them every day when i'm gone. >> reporter: it's been two weeks since bergdahl went missing from his unit.

in the video, private bergdahl said he was lagging behind on control, but the u.s. military says the incident is still under control. >> scared i won't be able to go home. it is very unnerving to be a prisoner. >> reporter: in the 28-minute video posted on the taliban website, his captors asked him to send a message to the american people. >> please bring us home. it is america, and american people have that power. >> reporter: the u.s. military is saying it is doing everything it can to bring bergdahl back safely but insists there will be no negotiating. >> we're very unhappy with the public exploitation of a prisoner and the humiliation that goes with that. that's a violation of international law. >> reporter: bergdahl's family released a statement saying we hope and pray for our son's safe return to his comrades, and then to our family. the taliban group holding him have not set any conditions for his release. cbs news, new york.

>> bergdahl deployed to afghanistan in february. irish author frank mccourt passed away today at the age of 78. he is best known for his memoir angela's ashes. mccourt was suffering from meningitis and melanoma. he wrote "angela's ashes" after retiring from 30 years as a new york high school english teacher. pope benedict xvi stood before hundreds this morning blessing them despite a cast on his broken wrist. it was the first public appearance for the pope since he took a fall at the papal vacation home. he thanked well wishers who prayed for his health. north baltimore residents joined in the fight against bone marrow cancer tonight. with just a swab of your cheek like that you can register as a bone marrow donor. that's just what people came

turning around to the southeast, and that's because there's another storm coming our way. we saw some clouds today and tonight but tomorrow clouds are going to take over, and then the chance for a couple showers or thunderstorms. it's because of this low right down in here. it is going to move up the coast, and it will top into that moisture just offshore, bringing some of it our way. works out like this. we have the low just along the front. starts to make its way up the coast tomorrow. by tomorrow afternoon, a shower or thunderstorm is possible. then as we head into tuesday, the low is still hanging around. scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible with that, and it will try to get out of here on wednesday. wouldn't be surprised if something did lippinger into wednesday, but for the most part the activity will be leaving with this low itself. now, while it's on top of us, temperatures are going to remain cool, but when it gets out of here on wednesday we start to warm up. hot on the waters with that going on winds turning around to the east, and that's what's going to top into that cooler ocean air over the next few days. the bay temperature now 78
