operation inoculate. maryland steps up to the plate taking on a key role in the battle against the swine flu. >> we're going to be work far into the night as other people in the laboratories to really get the answers that we need. this is really an intensive push. >> tonight, what doctors here in maryland are doing to protect you before the virus invades again. hello, i'm vic carter. >> i'm denise koch. here's what people are talking about tonight. man your battle stations. the swine flu managed to survive this summer, and tonight there is concern it it will hit even harder this fall. now maryland is right on the front lines in the fight against the virus. mike hellgren reports local doctors are working to develop a vaccine. >> reporter: lori is pregnant, and one of the 37,000 people diagnosed with h1n1 swine flu across the united states. she is also one of the thousands who will be helped by ground breaking work underway at the university of maryland

school of med is in baltimore where a vaccine is being developed. >> it can be very devastating, and you want to act as quickly as possible. >> reporter: right now three people in maryland have died. 263 have died nationwide. and in the fall, h1n1 is expected to get worse. far worse, making the need for a vaccine urgent. >> the volunteers in this study will all receive two doses of vaccine three weeks apart. >> reporter: thousands in maryland will be given the vaccine here at the school of medicine and at sites in annapolis and frederick. >> vaccination is one of the most effective public health measures against the spread of diseases. we did not have that available to us, did not have that tool in our toolbox, that arrow in our quiver in the spring. >> reporter: the government will spend $1 billion on the vaccine. this is the only testing site in the mid-atlantic. >> we are doing the best that we can to prepare ourselves.

out of the water. >> with unof the lifeguards did cpr. >> when he was pulled vought the water there was no heartbeat, he wasn't breathing, nothing. >> when the emergency crew got there they used a defibrillator to restart his heart but critical minutes had passed. >> obviously your son's life was saved, but you think a matter of minutes would have saved him aus remember him. >> yes, i believe so. >> instead, he needs constant care. and although they are encouraged by little triumphs. >> can you say hi? >> hi. >> he's progressing very slowly, but it's going to be permanent damage. >> the beckers, who now keep a defibrillator in their home, are pushing for two bills. one would require more lifeguards. the other bill would require every public pool have a defibrillator that lifeguards are trained to use. >> we thought our pool was safe. we paid our dues, we thought it

raiding the office of a key witness to jackson's death. there was no warning. los angeles detectives raided the houston clinic where dr. conrad murray practices. the warrant was issued shortly after agents received preliminary results from the michael jackson autopsy. it centers on the drug propapol, also known as dip pli diprivan. >> this is key because they say we don't take the word of the doctor, we want to see the records ourselves. >> in the two-hour search detectives removed 21 documents and a copy of a computer hard drive. >> we're going to have to be going through documents. >> dr. murray has not denied giving jackson propafol, but he

also says he did nothing that should have caused jackson's death. controversy is boiling tonight over the handcuffing and arrest of three young boys, and now the head of the city police force is stepping in. eyewitness news is live outside the juvenile detention center downtown. kelly mcpherson explains the police commissioner was taking a firm stance and standing by his officers. kelly. >> reporter: vic, the question is should three young boys who were caught stealing a bike have been handcuffed and did he taped here, and the commissioner says his officers did their job. three boys playing in the street ended up in jail this weekend. >> i'd give the kid a bike if they want a bike. >> reporter: the victim called police. >> at that time my son grabbed me and said, "i don't want to go to jail, mommy." >> reporter: police took the

three boys to the juvenile justice center. >> do we have special rooms with teddy bears for kids? no. >> it was like really hot and really dirty. >> i wanted to go home, and i was scared. >> reporter: the moth verse two of the boys say handcuffs and detention was too much. >> sometimes children do things and they don't understand the consequences, but it didn't have to be that harsh. >> i think maybe if they would have put them in the police car, taken them to northern, had had a nice little scary talk with them, and let us come and pick them up. >> if it was your stuff taken, i don't know that you thed want cops coming back to you saying, well, the guy's too old, the guy's too young, the guy seems like a nice guy, so i'm not going to do anything. >> reporter: while the parents are outraged, many neighbors say they think the police did the right thing. >> now they really to have keep a close eye on your children. >> everybody is getting outraged about kids being arrested, but if their parents were watching them, they wouldn't have that problem. >> i think they probably

learned their lesson. >> reporter: police say the boys have not been charged, and this will not show up on their permanent record. kelly mcpherson, wjz eyewitness news. >> kelly, thank you. the victim in this case says one of the three boys has already apologized in person. there was a mixture of anger and fear in one baltimore community after a clerk was gunned down in his own store. six days later there is still a killer on the loose. eyewitness news is live in fullerton. kai jackson explains neighbors can't feel safe until the shooter is locked up. >> reporter: that's right. while police are looking for the killers, customers and employees around here are looking for better security. the pain of the murder is still fresh inside buddy hill's liquors, his choir noticeably empty. baltimore county police are still looking for the killers. >> we are working with the

baltimore county police department, and we believe they're working diligently around the clock trying to find out who they are. >> i don't like it, but somebody got killed, and it's sad because they don't have much security. >> he's kind of like my second father. >> reporter: amos is determined to make sure kang didn't die in vain. >> hopefully i can take this to the landlord and say, look this is what has happened, a man has lost his life. >> they're looking for more security here, and you know what, i think we need it. >> reporter: employees had a buddy hill liquors believe there are adequate cameras inside the storks but it's out here where they believe security really needs to be approved. >> i'd like to see cameras focused on these sidewalks, back of the building, on the side of the building. >> reporter: in the meantime, the hunt for the killers continues.

>> it's very early in the investigation, and there's just not a lot that we want out there in the public. hopefully we're going to get some information about who these people are. >> reporter: and there are things that baltimore county police simply don't know at this time. for instance, they don't know which direction the men headed. they don't even know if they got into a car. they're hoping to learn that information as soon as ponl. june kang is survived by his wife and son. well, it was a bizarre scene in today's auction of the senator theater. >> $800,000. >> 800. >> now 850. >> despite the large crowd, the auction only drew two bids, one by proxy, the other from baltimore city. the city edged out the other bidder, so the city retains the theater for a grand total of $800,000. today the senator's previous owner says he he will continue to operate the theater until

francisco. you can see people on the platform when on the same track another train crashes into the back of the car. 48 people were injured in the collision. investigators say they are focus ong human error because there is no indication of mechanical failure. outrage from the families of the virginia tech shooting victims over what they see as another lapse in the investigation. the gunman's missing mental health records have just been found at the home of a former university counselor. the families want to know if the files contain any warnings which could have prevented the deadly rampage. state officials say they will eventually make those records public. dr. robert miller took the files to his home a year before seung-hui cho killed 32 people and himself. shortly after the shooting miller told investigators he didn't know where the records were. they are enjoyed at picnics and ball parks but are hot dogs hazard tows your health? one group says they have filed a lawsuit to force

about the economy. >> yeah, right. two big areas of showers, one southwest of us, and the motion right now is taking most of the moisture not toward us. this batch here in the north carolinas heading to western maryland, this batch down here is heading up toward ocean city and the eastern shore, probably passing just east of us overnight and during the day tomorrow. this stuff passing to our west. however, there's a lot more out here. i think that's going to swing on. a lot of lines are going to inting on by the area sometime during the afternoon tomorrow. we'll probably see some of these showers and thundershowers headed toward our region. so we do have the chances of rain tomorrow. maybe not as great as i would like. 75 degrees tonight, dew point is back up to 69 degrees. the barometer holding steady, 30.05 inches. around the state, 66, out in oakland. 79 at ocean city. you folks will see some rain by
