don and mary. the mayor says this was clearly part of a feud and clearly premeditated. they think this is part of a retaliation, a big rivalry between big drug organizations. wjz was on the scene last night in the 2600 block of ashland avenue in the east end community when 12 people were shot during a cookout. among them a pregnant woman and a 2-year-old. all of them are expect to survive. investigators say a man open fired with a semi automatic weapon. the mayor lashed out this morning. >> this was prepremeditated. not a random act. you talk about premeditated. it is their responsibility to speak up. think of that pregnant woman who was shot, the baby who was shot. other people who were shot. people know what happened help in need to speak up so we can follow the law and take people through the process who need to be convicted of committing those kind of crimes. as simple and plain as that.

>> reporter: the shooting spree here was many of a four-hour nissan east baltimore. two teenagers were killed in north conklin. all of the bloodshed happens when the nonfatal shootings are down. the murder rate is up slightly. >> it is just sad that these shootings that are going on, people have no respect for life. >> reporter: and so far, we don't know of any arrests in the cookout shooting but the police commissioner and the mayor are expected to have a joint news conference about an hour at city hall. we will cover that for you. reporting live from city headquarters, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you, mike. wjz is always on. for more on this developing storge to wjz.com. for our other top story this noon, the aftermath of storms that roared throughout region last night. a live view of some of the damage in the daylight. sky chopper 13 is following the damage and reports throughout

our area. captain mike perry is live over carroll county and meteorologist tim williams live in our first warning weather center but we begin with alex demetrick on the ground in owings mill with more on the extensive damage there. good afternoon, alex. >> reporter: good afternoon to you, mary. this is the reisterstown area. the meadows and sunnybrook farm neighborhoods that took a real hit in the storm last night. not even the largest of trees was strong enough to stand up last night's powerful storm. in the reisterstown area, the thunderstorm hit with blinding rain, hail and wind. >> i looked outside and i saw the trees across the street lay down, and i knew something wasn't right. >> we had these limbs behind you all in the carport. we have got a tree down on some lines over here. it was horrible. >> reporter: trees crashed into roofs of some homes and crushed at least one car. in this vehicle, a falling tree brought down electric lines, trapping a woman inside for hours. according to the national weather service, straight-line winds of 60 miles per hour did the damage, but it felt

considerably stronger to some. >> i am surprised they are not classifying this as a tornado. >> really, why? >> because the force of the wind and the hail. >> reporter: well, the force of that, you can obviously see. bge crews out here working. at one point 30,000 people without power as a result of this storm. they now are in the baltimore area 9,000 people still without power. it is likely to be until some time tomorrow, before someone fully restored. back to you in the studio. >> thank you, alex. check in with captain mike perry live over damage in carroll county, of course. >> what you are looking at is the 6500 block of carroll highlands road in carroll county. this type of damage is typical to the damage we are finding in this area. a lot of trees that were topped off here. you could sigh strong winds took a lot of treetops down across wires. one rescue up here in carroll county of a tree falling on a car we heard of last night.

no reports of injuries in this particular neighborhood, but we have a significant amount of trees across power lines and will take a while to get that cleaned up. back to you on tv hill. >> quite a shot. thank you, captain mike in sky chopper 13. tim williams over in the weather center. what a storm system, tim? >> many people didn't see anything at all, not a drop of rain. let's explain and back up on the radar. the storms were rolling through. first warning radar until 6:00. started rolling through and started triggering thunderstorm warnings across much of the eastern shore, dorchester, whacamico, and talbolt and baltimore county and carroll county saw the brunt of this. winds exceeding 50 miles per hour in many instances. and this is what we have been talking about. a lot of folks thought that the damage was due to tornadoes, but we have been talking about straight-line winds. we throw that term around. he will explain what we are talking about. straight-lynn winds. downward thunderstorm winds that are not associated with rotation so they don't have the

same characteristics as tornado. however, damage or debris is pushed into the directions. the wind is blowing. typically in one direction, whatever the whipped is but not in a rotation. straight-line wind can be as powerful as tornado winds. that's why they are always mistaken, especially from folks on the ground. kinetic winds will scatter debris in different locations. it is throwing it all over the place. if winds are 58 miles per hour or more the storm is classified as severe by the national weather service. regardless whether they are from a tornado or straight-line winds, strong winds are strong winds and that's what we were dealing with yesterday. we will continue to monitor what is going on this afternoon and more from first warning weather a lit later in the program, don. >> thank you, tim. 12,000 homes total power outage. 9100 in the area that alex cold you. another 1800 in carroll county

that captain mike perry was hovering over and another 1,000 in harford county. whenever severe weather strikes, wjz is.com is always on. a look at the forecast and live look at doppler radar go to wjz.com. another developing story this noon. baltimore county police remain on the scene . of a deadly accident involving a street sweeper. sally is live in the newsroom more on how three people were killed in white marsh. sally. >> mary, the crash occurred very early this morning just before 5 a.m. this was the seen on honeygo boulevard. all three people in the vehicle died after the car burst into flames after the collision. the road was closed for a while as emergency crews went to the scene. they are trying to figure out what happened. mary, back to you. >> we will continue to follow the story and bring you updates when we get them. federal detainees may be housed here in baltimore. they are work out a plan to keep hundreds of inat the former super max prison.

inmates awaiting trial in baltimore are shifted to federal facilities across the united states. more money is needed from the federal government to increase capacity at the history here. when it comes to health care, obese americans are paying more than their healthier neighbors. obese persons spend an extra $1400 a year on health care, more than double the amount last decade. former president bill clinton says a problem that is stressing america's health care system. >> it really matters what happens here. matters whether we save this generation of kids. matters whether we save our country's health system. >> the cdc is pushing for new ways to make healthy food more affordable and it is encouraging cities all across the area to promote physical activity. here is some physical activity, the baltimore ravens new bide receiver is retiring before he even takes the field. drew bennett has only been on

the new york giant star receiver plaxico burris will likely spend time in jail, the district attorney prosecuting him for carrying an unlicensed gun will accept a plea deal with a year of prison. prosecutors have been insisting on two years. they say burris shot himself in a leg at a new york city night club last november. he could also face disciplinary action by the nfl. a horrific crash in new york city as eight people are killed in an accident, including some children. a woman who was driving her minivan on the wrong side of the parkway when she hit a suv head-on. all three men in the suv were killed as were the woman and four children with her. just hours earlier, five people were injured in another crash on that same vehicle as a vehicle was also traveling the wrong direction. >> everybody has the capacity to save a life and more and more people are getting that

. wow, that looks much better than i expected. >> it is beautiful. >> really nothing out there but big puffy clouds, the humidity levels are pretty high, but other than that, a comfortable summer afternoon. >> those big puffy clouds build into thunder heads later on. [ laughter ] >> that is the other side of the story. you are right. we stand the chance of it happening again this afternoon. current conditions. temperatures just around 82 degrees. we are at noon and 82. and the dew points are still pretty high. 68 degrees is your dew point. typically in the summer when we are talking about that really humid feel. the dew points are in the mid- 60s, the relative humidity is at 62. the moisture in the atmosphere is pretty high. that's why these thunderstorms and these rainshowers start to come down, they have a lot of energy and juice to work with and they come down pretty hard in a short time. northwest at 5 miles per hour and barometer at 29.97 and rising now across the state, temperatures are ranging from 72 in oakland to 71 in

cumberland. 85 on the shore and 77 in elkton. the nation's capital at 82. 81 in the state capitol. 79 in bel air and westminster. we are going to be watching over the next few hours the winds. currently now coming in from the north. not necessarily a good thing. we have seen bit of a south, southwesterly flow bringing us the warm, moist air. wind from the north interjects from -- well, some cool air in there, and that starts the spin and starts the churn in the atmosphere. we will see some drying in there now and sun peeking through. that sun will start to heat us up. all of those dynamics make for the typical summer-type habit with a lot of moisture in the air. we don't see any rain look at the trail of the clouds. the front that stalled to the east of the metro area and the moisture is out there. doesn't take a lot. one little ripple to start all of that in motion. the thunder will continue out of here but close enough to bring us the chance of showers every afternoon for the neck few and another front

in today's eyewitness news health watch, the key to sheding baby weight may be in how much women sleep. a study followed new moms in their first six months after giving birth. those who got five or less hours of sleep a day were three times more likely to hold on to those extra pounds. i think a memo needs to be sent to the babies who are born to let the moms sleep a bit. those who slept seven hours or to more had an easier time to drop the weight.
