and a big storm came through and the house shook. it kind of shook a little worse than it normally does. >> reporter: storms slam maryland. roofs ripped right off of homeless. trees chopped to the ground and power knocked out for thousands tonight as fierce weather hits the region. complete coverage as people throughout several counties work to assess the damage. hello everyone i'm dick

carter. we begin tonight with breaking news. tonight we just momenting moments ago learned that the weather center has confirmed that a tornado touched down. in the morning, authorities will be at finksburg. the storms also hit to the south. you can see these electrical lines in pasadena were knocked down. trees were toppled across the country, some on to homes. falling trees were also a big problem in montgomery county. you can see some trees fell over two suvs. there is no word on injuries in this accident. eyewitness news has been following. >> reporter: from the radar earlier tonight, what was going on.

so here is how it looks. there are the storms as they made their way through. you can see in fredricks. the bright colors there moving to the east. you can see those thunderstorms moving to the east that did in fact, produce a tornado. that is confirmed by the weather service. in fredrick's county. it's a preliminary estimate. they are just coming up with this. generally the damage was around 100 miles per hour wind. you can see on this scale that would put us at an e1. the report will come out tomorrow. you also heard that tomorrow morning day will be going out to access the damage that was viewed in carol county. that's something else we are going to be watching. here's what it looked like earlier. we are showing you all the tang

-- all the damage that did happen. you can see in all these blue counties, how widespread the damage was. trees and power lines down in every one of these counties. also if you head down to the beaches, there was a spotted funnel cloud. nothing did touch the ground. but at this point a funnel cloud was spotted. very widespread damage. fortunately the worse looks like it's over. at least for this go around. and we'll have your go around coming up in just a bit. and our continued coverage continues right now. >> reporter: the distance of the damage here, the width of the path just about 2 feet.

>> it lifted my car on two wheels and dropped it back down. >> and the wall is caved in, but we can at least live there. >> reporter: kevin dehante's mom injured her wrist. >> i heard like a huge sound when i was in the garage. and i knew my mom was out there working. so my brother and i came out running. >> reporter: this home has been condemned, this one also. and a third one. >> there's water standing two inches. >> reporter: firefighters have stepped in to tarp some of the roofs. neighbors have started cleaning up the mess. the damage was less severe in fredricks county. and many wonder if this was a

tornado. >> all hell broke lose. everything was sideways. >> two of the families were on vacation. >> reporter: hours after the storm blew through. >> there goes a roof. some more roof. >> reporter: you can see it's still pretty dangerous out here. because the structures haven't been verified there. there's lots of debris still out here. and workers are still putting tarps on the roofs that have been ripped off by this stormment kelly mcpherson, eyewitness news. pge crews are still out there working to restore power. here are the latest numbers, hartford county has 2800 people out. and and howard county has a little less than a thousand people without power tonight. new at 11:00, a federal report on last weeks deadly helicopter crash says the pilot

was warned about bad weather before it took off. preliminary report by the ntsb says the pilot received warnings about fog and lightning in the area minutes before deciding to fly. the cause of the crash still is under investigation. the cash for clunkers program has gotten refueled. today, lawmakers pumped more money into the program after fears that the program was running out of cash. but if your want to trade in your clunker you better act now. >> reporter: the supply of new cars stacked up as the economy faltered and credit dried up. but the cash for clunkers program has been the bright spot. boosting car sales along with the economy faster than most expected. >> we are just glad to have a fuel efficient and a cool new car. >> reporter: so far the $2 billion in funding nearly ran out in less than a week. the house passed an emergency

bill for 1 billion extra. >> if somebody has a car that qualifies, certainly they should go to a dealership this weekend. get the transaction started. >> reporter: peter kitsmiller is president of the automobile dealers association. he tells wjz although sales are way up, the program's management is flawed. >> the problem is my dealers can't even get the transaction entered into the system to everyone attempt to get reimbursed. very few if any maryland dealer. i don't think of a maryland dealer that has been reimbursed. >> reporter: bring in your car and you get a rebate for it as long as it gets 20 miles or less per gallon and you have owned it for a year. >> last night's scare kind of brought them out in droves. we were here till midnight last

night doing deals. >> reporter: he hopes cash for clunkers won't run of the of cash any time soon. >> get here right away. get here as soon as possible so we can get these deals worked out while the funds are available. >> reporter: the bottom line is you're got at least through this weekend to get your clunker off the roads and into dealerships like this one and get that cash. and the government managed to burn through the original $1 billion budgeted for the program in less than a week. they are trying to put speed cameras the moving forward. a bill will be introduced at the baltimore county meeting. the measure stems from a state law passed this year. 12 to 15 cameras will be set up near school and construction zones. there still needs to be an exact location for the speed cameras.

if the bill passes, the cameras will be activated by october. wjz arrived hundreds of orioles fans as they showed up to watch the orioles-red sox. tonight ggbarnett explains why donations are needed now more than ever. >> empty shelves, few boxes. >> people start forgetting. >> reporter: and low donations. >> we're just scratching the surface. >> reporter: paula elms says the problem is supply and demand.

the donations are low because the economy is low. and the need is up because of deep job loss. >> people need to understand people out there are hungry. it's not just people below the poverty level. it's seniors, it's kids. if you have something you can share, money, food, you need to do it. >> reporter: but baseball fans can help and they have in the past. last year the o's food drive raised $30,000 in cash. but since the food drive with wjz started back in 2004, fans gave more than $120,000 all for the food bank. the food bank says donorring should give smart. check expiration dates. try not to give food in glass containers. it really needs cash.

suicide. his wife has been ruled a suspect. on tuesday night, a 17-year- old says three baltimore city police officers ran him over with their unmarked car at moser and pennsylvania avenue. >> it's just a shame how they do our youth today. >> i have become pain. >> reporter: he was sitting on a dirt bike, those are illegal in the city. >> it's almost like a routine standard or practice by baltimore city police to run over young people as they are riding motorcycles or dirt bikes in community streets. >> reporter: before hearing about the lawsuit, the police department tells wjz it

launched an internal investigation wednesday morning. >> whether me, or spokesperson, or the person who cleans the building, if you've done something wrong, we're going to hold people accountable. but before we do that we need to investigate the situation and figure out what happened. >> in this particular case, what we have is a young man who is merely talking to a group of his friends. that was the most disturbing thing about this. because these officers put all the children out there at peril. >> reporter: his lawyer would not say how much money the lawsuit is asking for, it's unclear how badly the injuries will impact johnson's ability to box again. >> it's going to be a long road to recovery. from the basis of a lawsuit, his personal injuries and distress. >> reporter: kelly mcpherson, eyewitness news. >> the 17-year-old also says he's concerned about taking careover his 1-year-old daughter.

destroyed. trees and power lines closed several roads in fredrick county. so are they going to be out there back again tomorrow to determine if there were more tornadoes. >> they are, because they ran out of sunlight tonight. we will have that for you tomorrow. they're going to assess the situation in carol county. at this point we are quieting down. what we want to do at first warning doppler radar and take you back to these storms. take a look at the bright colors. right in here. that's where there was a tornado right at that point. notice how they race off to the east with weupd damage all the way along at the same time, this second line came up from the south. also producing damage and a funnel cloud just off ocean city. so let's show you from earlier. look how quickly this just all comes together and gets out of here. these storms moving so fast, that when you add the impact, it wasn't difficult to get this

wind damage out there. winds are generally about 100 miles per hour in the damage that they've seen so far. we want to show you that the official report is not out yet. but that would put us right at this range of an ef1 tornado. we will bring you more on that as we head through the day tomorrow. right now we're calming down. no watches in effect. but it is still very muggy outside. we are starting to see some fog in the region. from the rain that fell early today. and the really muggy conditions. here's the storm on hold. it continues to push off to the southeast. that's where we are going to see most of the storms tomorrow. for the most part, tomorrow we are going to be dry. we are not completely ruling out the chance for a late day thunderstorms. mainly over southern parts of the state. or over the mountains to the west. but for most of us it'll be a nice quiet day. sunday, another front coming our way.

as this one comes in, there will be a chance after thunderstorms with it once again then we will have a third one coming as we head through the week. so a for more chances. in this kind of an atmosphere, it doesn't take much tonight everything winding down. tomorrow, here's our break. partly sunny, just the slightest chance late in the day. 88 for our high. then by sunday, that next front comes in with a chance for a few thunderstorms. that one gets out of here. and a third one will follow tuesday into wednesday. as we are saying in this kind of an atmosphere. it does not take much for any storm to become strong or severe. if anything does happen over the next several days, we will continue to pass on those warnings to you. because you have already seen some of the damage they can do. coming up the orioles and boston in a game of home run derbies. we'll have that coming up next.
