[no audio ] >> we're having trouble with our audio, as you can see a very bad accident. we'll bring you captain mike as soon as we can. in just hours a prayer vigil will be held near pittsburgh for the victims of a health club rampage there.

while the greerve grieving process starts, new details about the gunman are emerging. >> the gunman left behind video that showed how desperate he was to attract women. the 48-year-old shooter who opened fire on a health club killing three women and wounding nine others was a loner. >> to be able to emotionally connect with people. >> reporter: he talked about relationships with women 10 to 20 years younger. in a second undated video, he shows off his book about dating young women. >> come over here. there's reading material we're all familiar with. >> reporter: a makeshift memorial is growing where sodini went on his rampage. many are stopping by to leave condolences including two women in the room when the shots were fired. >> he was just wan domly -- randomly shooting people. at that point, everybody

started screaming. >> reporter: joann and her daughter julia feared they would be held hostage. >> all of these thoughts running through my head. he sat down, and he switched his gun. he saw him shoot himself. >> reporter: police say sodini was filled with hatred for women and no one would get in the way of his exit plan. in collier township, pennsylvania, whit johnson, wjz "eyewitness news." >> police say his 4600 pages was to end his misery at the gym. the 48-year-old computer programmer did not have relationships with any of his victims. as we told you at the top of the newscast a violent crash in west baltimore. let's go back to captain mike perry with details. mike? >> reporter: hello, sally. we're on west lexington street at calhoun where early information of this very, very serious crash involving police activity. we know that allegedly a car was stolen from in front of the lexington market.

it occurred just after 3:00 this afternoon. now, police are alleging that the operator of that stolen vehicle was driving at a high rate of speed westbound on lexington street crossing calhoun when it struck a vehicle broadside. this was a civilian vehicle that just happened to be driving by. you're looking at that vehicle now. we know that there was one driver inside of the horrible mess rescued from the scene and taken to shock trauma. the condition of that operator is not known at this hour. the operator of the suspect vehicle that police were interested in or the alleged stolen vehicle also has been taken to shock trauma. his condition is not known. we did see a third woman transported from the scene here. it is not clear at this point how she was involved in this accident, but she appeared to be ambulatory and seemed to have injuries that were less than life-threatening. the street is closed completely from calhoun to about a block west of there as they continue to conduct their investigation. we do have some units from the

regional auto theft task force on the scene of the collision. again it is not known early at this point whether this was a police chase or whether this suspect had stolen the vehicle and was just driving away at high speed. we'll continue to gather information and keep you updated. back to you on tv hill. >> thanks a lot. new developments in the case of a new york woman behind the wheel when eight people were killed when she was driving on the wrong side of the highway. gigi barnett's live with the latest. >> reporter: the attorney for diane schuller's family says the 36-year-old mother was a diabetic and may have suffered a stroke before the crash. the fiery collision occurred july 26 just north of new york city. schuller's husband claims that his wife had a mouth abscess for several weeks and bump on her leg prior to the crash. mees say she downed more than 10 vodkas and smoked marijuana before the minivan crashed into an oncoming suv. the family has not decided whether to seek another autopsy as they want to wait for the

county's report. back to you. >> schuller's 2-year-old and three nieces were kill add long with her as well as three men in the suv. her 5-year-old son survived. it's official. sonia sotomayor is now the nation's first hispanic supreme court justice. joel brown reports on the historic vote. >> reporter: sonia sotomayor has made history. >> the yeas are 68, and the nays are 31. the nomination of sonia sotomayor of new york is confirmed. >> reporter: president obama's choice for the supreme court is the first hispanic woman elevated to that bench. >> if you want to be first, you have to be the best. sonia sot my area es resume and inspirational background clearly meet that higher standard. >> reporter: the senate's vote on sotomayor's nomination came after debate on whether she was the right choice.

nearly three-quarters of the gop senators refused to vote for her. they insisted she'd bring a liberal bias and personal feelings into the high court. >> america needs judges who are guided and controlled not by subjective empathy that they find inside themselves, but by objective law that they find outside themselves. >> reporter: sotomayor was nominated to replace retiring david suitor, a liberal justice appointed by the first president bush. she is not expected to shift the ideological balance of the high court. now that sotomayor's been confirmed, the 55-year-old appeals court judge will leave behind her native new york city and move to washington ready to begin her lifetime appointment to the high court when the new term begins this fall. in washington, joel brown, wjz "eyewitness news." >> by a vote of 68-31, the senate confirmed sotomayor over the objections of republicans who said she would bring personal bias and a liberal

agenda. a trial date has been set for mayor sheila dixon, but the big task at hand is the tough job lawyers will have finding an impartial jury. mike hellgren has more on that live from wjz.com today. mike? >> reporter: sally, dixon's trial is expected to begin november 9th. it was delayed a month after prosecutors obtained a new indictment against her. it restores some of the charges that were previously thrown out. the highly publicized case means it could be difficult to seat a fair jury, so we want to know what you think. how difficult do you think it will be to seat an impartial jury in the mayor dixon case? the choices are very difficult, not hard at all, or not sure. to cast your vote, simply log on to wjz.com. sally, back to you. >> thanks, mike. dixon's attorneys say they plan to file a new motion arguing the state prosecutor has abused the grand jury process. there's good news for the gm transmission plant in

whitemarsh despite the recession. how federal stimulus dollars are keeping the engine ready at the plant. >> reporter: employees here once feared that the economy would put this facility on gm's chopping block. now comes the exciting news that they could play a vital role in gm's future. the elephant plant built transmission systems but could soon have a major hand at developing a rear wheel drive electric system for the company, which recently emerged from bankruptcy. the move is part of the federal government's investment in more fuel-efficient cars. the grant money comes from the $800 billion stimulus package and will require a company match for gm. it could potentially create tens of zschaus of jobs around the country. >> for too long we failed to invest in this kind of innovative work. even if countries like china and japan were racing ahead. that's why this announcement's so important. this represents the largest investment in this kind of

technology in american history. >> reporter: but exactly how things will change at the whitemarsh plant remains unclear. cot grant mean more jobs. for their part, gm corporate managers say we are very excited about the news, however, we don't know the details or the scope of what this means for the maryland plant. there is a team of people discussing the plans for the grant, and they will determine what portion will be coming to the whitemarsh plant. gm managers say they hope to be able to release details soon on what kind of role this facility will play in their future. i'm derek valcourt. now back to you. >> thank you, derek. the whitemarsh plant will share $105 million with the plant in michigan to develop the rear wheel drive electric system. a prime location has been chosen for slot machine gambling if the company is granted a license here. they have acquired this land on russell street south of m & t

an inmate spits on a judge presiding over his case. i didn't do anything, and i didn't plot anything. >> a florida woman maintains her innocence after being accused of hiring a hitman to kill her husband of six months. a prince george's county neighborhood's rocked after a simple fumigating procedure goes horribly wrong. and it's starting to warm up after a cooler start to the day. bob is updating the forecast.

controversy in a kentucky courtroom after an inmate not happy about being accused of attempted murder spits on a judge's face. it happened yesterday after the man was charged with trying to kill a jailer. he's also a suspect in his ex- girlfriend's death. the judge was led away after the spitting incident. the inmate is expected to face additional charges for his conduct in the courtroom.

family burglary bust in california. a dad is accused of using his three children to help him steal msdz. police say the man's 8-year-old and 13-year-old acted as lookouts while he and his 17- year-old son opened and stole products. a florida woman is in custody after being accused of hiring an undercover police officer to kill her husband. >> reporter: when dahlia rushed home from the gym wednesday, her townhouse was wrapped in crime tape and a police sergeant was waiting to break the news. her husband of six months was dead. despite what you see, mees say she was no grieving widow. >> she wanted to have her husband killed. >> reporter: the plot was hatched at this gas station saturday. according to police, she handed a man pictures of her husband and townhouse and $1200 for a

handgun. >> she was very calm, cool, calculated. she offered a lot of options as far as how, where and where to take care of her husband. >> reporter: one problem, the man was a confidential informant to police. an undercover officer posed as a hitman. >> the undercover officer gave her several options. are you sure you want to do this? she maintained her positive attitude by saying i am 5,000% sure i want this done. >> reporter: that scene at her house wednesday was the grand finale. >> no tears. a lot of noise, but no tears. her eyes didn't appear wet at all. >> reporter: at the police station, she was told her hitman was a cop and her husbands with alive and well. >> i don't think she was glad to see him alive. she was more in shock that he was alive. >> still hasn't hit me. i get it, but i don't get it like, you know, technically if

it's 10:50, i should have been dead at like, 9:00. i'm an hour and a half on the good side i guess. >> reporter: police say she never explained why she wanted her husband dead. the two only knew each other for four months when they married. >> i didn't do anything. i didn't plot anything. >> reporter: she may now have to convince a jury of that. >> her husband said there were money issues between the two but didn't elaborate. stocks slipped a bit today. investors were discouraged after july retail sales figures were released. the dow was down 25 points. the s & p's down six and the nasdaq is down 20 today. let's go to new york where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money update. >> reporter: the unemployment line is getting shorter. first-time filings fell to 550,000 last week. while that number is still high, experts point to a stabilizing in the labor market. tomorrow we expect to hear the unemployment rate inched up to

9.7%. a new report finds nearly half the nation's mortgage borrowers will soon be underwater owing more on the mortgages than the homes are worth. the report estimates 25 million borrowers will plunge underwater before home prices are expected to stabilize in the beginning of 2011. it is cheaper to finance a home this week. according to freddie mac, the average rate on a 30-year mortgage slipped to 5.22%. one year ago, the rate was 6.52%. the nation's retailers continue to suffer. consumers worried about their jobs simply aren't spending. that made for disappointing july sales. experts say this doesn't bode well for the crucial back to school shopping season. and in another sign of the times, proctor and gamble is rolling out a cheaper detergent. tide basic is 20% less than the iconic brand. track all of your headline as the cbs money watch.com. i'm alexis christoforous.

it is 4:30, 76 degrees and sunny. i'm denise koch. we want to update you on the breaking news out of west baltimore where a violent crash has left several people injured and at least one dead. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene. captain mike has the details. mike? >> reporter: hello, den nice. this occurred shortly after 3:00 this afternoon as officers from the regional auto theft task force were monitoring an alleged stolen vehicle in the vicinity of lexington market. now, apparently, a person got in that vehicle, drove off in the suspect vehicle, down west lexington street. they were being followed at that time, apparently by officers from the regional auto theft task force. when the suspect observed those officers, he speeded up at a high rate of speed, went down west lexington street about 15 blocks west of martin luther king boulevard, collided with

this sport utility vehicle, this silver in color sport utility vehicle as it was in the middle of the intersection of calhoun and west lexington. it was pushed nearly 200 feet in a westbound direction sideways. the vehicle came to rest again the vehicle. the driver of that vehicle was pronounced dead at shock trauma after being transported there. the driver of the suspect vehicle was transported with serious life-threatening injuries. a third person involved we believe this vehicle in the center here was struck by debris from the original vehicle, the silver vehicle. she was transported to a local area hospital, apparently with nonlife-threatening injuries. as you can see, the entire block here is closed from calhoun and west lexington for about a block west there of as city police investigators continue their investigation. back to you on tv hill. >> thank you very much, captain

mike perry. british toddler madeleine mccann disappeared more than two years ago. today, detectives announced a big development in the case. they launched an international search for a woman who may know what happened to madeline. sheila macvicar has the latest developments. >> reporter: a retired detective hired by the mccanns and family spokesman announced they had a new lead today. 3-year-old madeline disappeared in may of 2007 from the family's vacation resort in portugal. in spite of a vast police search and reconstruction of the way she might look now, her fate remains unknown. today, clarence mitchell said they were looking for a woman who spoke to a british man in barcelona a few days after madeline's disappearance. >> the witness became aware of a well-dressed woman who he describes as appearing agitated. >> reporter: what the woman, who may be australian, said to the man, detectives believe,

may indicate she knew something about what happened to madeline. elizabeth palmer, cbs news, london. >> now a private investigator hired by the mccanns say the woman is not currently a suspect in madeline's disappearance. the girl was nearly 4 years old when she disappeared may of 2007. south carolina governor sanford is back from vacation with his family after he tried to patch things up after admitting to an extra marital affair. the governor says he's working on restoring trust with huz family and the public after he announced his relationship with an argentine woman. is he now getting back to work with several meetings scheduled for today. the former mistress of john edwards heads to federal court in north carolina. it's an appearance that comes as investigators look into the former presidential candidate's campaign finances. sally's in the newsroom with more. sally? >> reporter: denise this morning, rheal hunter carried

her daughter into a north carolina building. john edwards admitted to having an affair with hunter in 2006 while he plotted his second bid for the white house. his campaign had hunter's video production firm $100,000 for work during that year. it's not clear whether today's court appearance is connected to the investigation into how edwards handled campaign funds. the former north carolina senator has acknowledged that he is under a federal investigation. denise? >> thank you, sally. the u.s. attorney's office in raleigh declined to confirm or deny the investigation. the cash for clunkers program is about to get a lifeline. congress is set to sign off for more money for the rebate program. drew levinson reports the race for the show room is jump starting auto sales at a critical time. >> reporter: ann decided her last trip in the old windstar would be to the neighborhood ford dealership. >> then the government offer

was too resistible. >> reporter: she is unloading the gas guzzler to take advantage of a $4500 government rebate on a more fuel efficient forward flex. would you have bought a car without the cash for clunkers program? >> no. >> reporter: now more drivers will be able to cash in like this family. with the senate poised to pump another $2 billion into the program -- >> this program is helping to put life back in our economy. >> reporter: in fact, the cash for clunkers program has been so successful, dealerships like this one are having trouble keeping the popular models like the ford focus and escape hybrid in stock. >> the other day we probably sold seven cars off the floor. >> reporter: cash for clunkers took off so fast it's about to burn through the billion dollars congress initially set aside. the house quickly signed off on more funding but the senate needs to green light a refill before members go home to keep cash for clunkers from coming to a screeching halt.

some senators want restrictions tacked on to the program but those measures are expected to fail. $2 billion injection should help families like this one -- >> the perfect vehicle if you want to move up from a minivan. >> reporter: drive away with deals through labor day. in new york, drew levinson, wjz "eyewitness news." >> the obama administration expects the extra money to fund an additional 500,000. without the money, the program would go broke by tomorrow. insecticides led to an apartment explosion in prince george's county. similar accidents have been happening across the country. >> reporter: a spokesman says the blast was likely caused by the fumes from insecticide foggers. the windows and doors were blown out when volatile fumes from the bug bombs made contact with the pilot light of a gas appliance. at least seven foggers were found inside the apartment, which is more than double

recommended. neighbors are stunned by the explosion. the improper use of insecticide foggers is being blamed for several explosion as cross the country. fire crews say follow warning labels before you use them inside your home. denise? >> the labors instruct consumers to turn off all flames and pilot lights before treating a house with bug bombers. boating-related deaths are up this summer. people are being lost to accidents. >> reporter: vincent and jim spend a lot of time crabbing on waterways and dodging other boats. >> too much speed, reckless, you know? 10 or 12 kids on a boat flying around. >> when you are on the water, you must pay attention because things can happen in a heart beak. >> reporter: a wake knocked an 11-year-old girl out of her boat into the water last week. she died. five others were luckier out here. >> we had an earlier incident

involving five individuals on a boat where a wake swamped their boat. in this case, the individuals were able to put on the life jackets. >> reporter: in 2007, ten people were killed in maryland boating accidents. that number dropped slightly to nine last year, but it's back up to ten with three months still to go in this year's boating season. >> know your limitations. know the vessel's limitations. make sure you have a safety margin. you can always go out another day. >> reporter: this year, a lot of people are out and accidents statewide are up. this year, throttles are back to wide open and so is partying. >> i think alcohol mays a big part of it. >> reporter: according to natural resources, police, alcohol and drugs are involved in half of the fatal accidents. calls for help aren't restricted to the bay and rivers. just this past week a man fell overboard in deep creek lake and nobody noticed. >> fortunately for that individual, one of our officers

were on patrol and heard him screaming. they picked up the individual in the water. he was highly intoxicated swimming away from land. >> reporter: out to where mistakes can kill you. >> according to natural resources, eight of the ten people who died this year were not wearing life jackets. we had a morning with clouds and light rain across the area, but take a live look outside right now. bright and sunny in baltimore. what kind of evening is on tap. flee of the men charged with killing a florida couple during a home invasion are facing arraignment today. they are among eight people charged so far in the murders of bird and melanie billings. the couple had 17 children, most of them adopted. some of the children were home when the men broke in and shot the children to death. police say they could make more arrests. we're now learning that the man accused of causing a bomb scare at la guardia had been in trouble with the law before and his mental stability is in question.
