fire department. the suspect's car is on the other side of the sidewalk. this all started because the regional auto theft task force, also known as r.a.t. was tagging this car was called off. that wasn't enough to stop the driver from driving erratically. >> they discovered the stolen auto at lexington and martin luther king boulevard. the information that we had, they didn't even get a chance to follow it before it took off at a rye rate of speed. here we are, what, 8, 10 blocks later, the vehicle was involved in an accident. >> reporter: so police are being very clear about the fact that they did spot this stolen vehicle but they weren't even able to follow him because he started speeding so quickly. the suspect is in serious condition in an area hospital and the woman was pronounced dead at shock trauma after the accident. kelly mcferson, wjz "eyewitness news." >> thank you, kelly.

wjz will continue to follow the breaking story throughout the evening. the government's cash for clunkers program is proving positive for the economy as people trade in their rundown vehicles for a brand new model. now, lawmakers want to extend the program even further. "eyewitness news" is live in brooklynville. jessica kartalija has more on the efforts to keep it running. >> reporter: the government has already poured $1 billion into the pot. now they are hoping to add another $2 billion giving the economy a much-needed boost. >> got a little head room. >> reporter: jerry and betsy mason are hoping to trade in their old explorer for something new. >> a good example of what can happen if the government does it right. >> reporter: the $1 billion spent on the government's cash for clunkers program has significantly boosted private spending. dealerships like bill kidd's toyota volvo in cockeysville are back on track. >> we normally stock 150 to 200 cars. as you can see now, i'm down to

maybe 50 cars. >> reporter: the sales manager setz they sold two weeks worth of cars in just four days. >> obviously, you wish you had more for people coming in for cars, but we do have them incoming. they just to to wait a bit to get 'em. >> reporter: economists say adding $2 billion for the cash for clunkers program could mean an $18 billion boost to the economy. here's how it works. clunkers, also known as gas guzzlers are eligible for a rebate from $3500 to $4500. the trade-in vehicle has to get a combined fuel economy rating of 18 miles per gallon or less. >> it is an excellent deal for the customer. >> this definitely has more head room. >> reporter: auto industry experts believe 750,000 clunkers will be replaced with new cars that are safer and better for the environment. >> it's taking all of the terrible gas mileage cars off the road. they are not just recycling them, they are getting rid of them.

will be held near pittsburgh tonight for the victims of the health club shooting rampage. the scandal at city hall shined a bright spotlight on mayor dixon. the media's glare could impact the selection of an impartial jury at her trial. mike hellgren has new analysis inside this high-profile case. mike? >> reporter: as you know this is a huge case. the prosecutor wants to prove he's tough on the corruption and the mayor can't afford a guilty verdict. so it all could come down to how both sides picked those jurors out of a huge pool. from the day the original indictments came down -- >> we just wanted to see if you would mind saying any comment about this? >> reporter: the mayor's corruption case has been dissected and dowpted for the public. all of that attention begs the question, how difficult will it be to seat an impartial jury when the trial starts in november? >> you have to go through an awful lot of jurors to make that happen. >> reporter: william bowie

tells wjz selection is crucial. >> defense attorneys willtry to seat as many african-american women on that jury as possible by some people that's been deemed by a person being picked on by the state prosecutor. >> senator, can you please speak with us? >> reporter: dixon is not the first maryland politician to face this type of scrutiny. tommy bromwell entered a guilty plea avoiding a trial. ruth ann aaron claimed there was no way an impartial jury could be seated in her trial for plotting to kill her husband. the first one ended in a hung jury. she later pleaded no contest. >> we're thanking god and giving him all of the praises. >> reporter: juror as quitted larry jowng -- jurors acquitted young. >> what made up our minds? the evidence. >> reporter: he was the last big politician the state prosecutor's office charged before mayor dixon, whose position could benefit her.

>> whether or not mayor dixon testifies will probably have the greatest bearing on this case. the jury, as you may recall from past cases, even the o.j. simpson case can have a huge bearing on the ultimate outcome of the case. i think this case will be one of those cases. >> the mayor's lawyers plan to file several motions to get the case dismissed before it even goes to trial. at city hall, mike hellgren, wjz "eyewitness news." >> thanks. pleat coverage of the case continues now with denise at wjz.com. denise? >> reporter: this case is so highly publicized, we'd like to know what you think about a trial. so all day, we've been asking to you log on to our web site to tell us how difficult it would be to seat an impartial jury. the choices are, very difficult, not hard at all, and not sure. so far, 59% think it will be very difficult. 33% think it won't be hard at all. 7% are not sure. back to you, sally.

confirmed. >> reporter: president obama's choice for the supreme court is the first hispanic woman elevated to that bench. >> if you want to be first, you have to be the best. sonia sotomayor's resume and inspirational background clearly meet that higher standard. >> reporter: the senate's vote on sotomayor's nomination comes after three days of debate over whether or not she's the right choice. sotomayor earned yes, sir votes from every democrat and a handful of republicans, but nearly three-quarters of the gop senators refused to vote for her insisting she brings personal feelings into the high court. >> america needs judges who are guided and controlled not by subjective empathy that they find inside themselves but by objective law that they find outside themselves. >> reporter: sotomayor was nominated to replace retiring david suitor, a liberal justice appointed by the first president bush. she is not expected to shift the ideological balance of the

high court. now that sotomayor's been confirmed, the 55-year-old appeals court judge will leave behind her native new york city and move to washington, ready to begin her lifetime appointment to the high court when the new term begins this fall. in washington, joel brown, wjz "eyewitness news." >> sonia sot mier is only the third woman to ever serve on the supreme court. if you were outside early today, you'd think summer was over as temps cooled down with includey skies. will these clearing skies bring cooler weather tonight? bob turk joins us with a look at live doppler radar. bob? >> reporter: just a few clouds right now, but primarily, we're looking for a clear night but cool temps back in the 50s and 60s. right now,er with at 76 and very comfortable showers and thunder showers from lewis toward ocean city. good rain along the beaches with lighter stuff to laurel.

there's exciting news for the gm plant in whitemarsh, baltimore county. employees who once feared the economy could put their facility on the gm chopping block now know they can play a vital role. derek valcourt has more on how they could be affected by the federal government grant. hi, derek. >> reporter: hi, sally. this plant saw layoffs not long ago and now could be in for a reversal of fortune as they soon could be playing a major role of the development of electric cars. transmission systems for gm cars, trucks and hybrids have been the bread and butter of employees they whitemarsh plant. they could soon have a major hand at developing a rear wheel drive electric system. general motors was awarded a $105 million grant to be shared by the whitemarsh plant and another in michigan. it's part of the $2.4 billion investment in more fuel- efficient electric cars.

>> this represents the largest investment in this kind of technology in american history. >> reporter: the money comes from the government's $800 billion stimulus package and will require a company match from gm, which recently emerged from bankruptcy. the news excites maryland senator barbara mikulski. >> the fact that stimulus money is coming to general motors at whitemarsh, we're so happy. the green jobs will be born right there on route 40. >> reporter: exactly how many jobs will come to the plant remains unclear. a gm spokesman says we are very excited about the news, however, we don't know the details or the scope of what this means for the maryland plant. there is a team of people discussing the plans for the grant. they will determine what portion will come to the whitemarsh plant. >> it isn't a new and exciting time for them, i think. >> reporter: towson economics proferser tim sullivan says the fact that the grant is to build electric cars bodes well for gm in the short and long term. >> it's innovative.

well, there's some rain going on over portions of maryland. we're talking below the eastern shore and southern delaware. the beaches now have been raining for several hours. they had good rain there.

sauls bury, lewis, delaware, all the way down through the southern portions. that's where the rain continues. you are still getting decent showers and thunder as well. that would be clear. now, probably about 8:00 or so. the rest of the region, a clear night and very comfortable temps overnight. right now, we're at 76. 81 up in cumberland. ocean city with rain on the boardwalk at 76. the biew r. dew point is down now to 59. that's pleasant. over the weekend, however it will start coming back up again. the temperatures will come back up again, particularly on sunday, monday, and tuesday when we get a string of 90 plus days. yes, heat headed your way. right now around the region, generally in the 70s, pleasant conditions. very light winds currently. and by the next day or so, the winds will not be a major factor. they will start to shift more on saturday to the southwest. that's going to allow heat to move in. this afternoon, showers south and east of us moving off the

good evening. thank you for staying with "eyewitness news." here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. the legal battle to keep towson catholic high open. this comes -- it's over. this comes after parent as agreed to drop the lawsuit against the diocese. gee gentlemen barnett spoke with one of the parents who filed the lawsuit. >> i tell my husband, i need to talk to somebody because they've shaken my faith, my religion. >> reporter: low lois wanted the high school to remain open. her 16-year-old daughter elisa will be a graduating senior next year. >> this was her fun year, her last year. >> reporter: days after the archdiocese of baltimore said it was forced to close the school because of deep debt and low attendance, parents and students took to the school's campus to protest. they scurried to find alternatives weeks before the new school year and scrambled to start fnd raisers to save towson catholic. it was then windsor decided to take legal action. it was a battle she thought

they could win. >> we were suing the archdiocese. they're big and strong. >> reporter: windsor and another parent filed two lawsuits. one to block the school's closing and another to keep the school open. windsor says towson catholic breached a contract. >> they voided my contract. that's where we figured we had a leg to stand on. >> reporter: a county judge sided with the school keeping it closed. this week, windsor agreed not to pursue the fight and her daughter is preparing to attend mercy high school in the fall but she still wants answers from the school. >> what goes around comes around. things happen for a reason. i don't know what this reason will be. only god knows. >> reporter: she also says only time will tell. she received much support from the kath ling community -- catholic community and they are planning to host a picnic to mark the school's million riz and history. kai, back to you. >> the parents dismissed the

lawsuit with prejudice which means they cannot file it again. good news for the crab industry and other seasonal employers. thousands of additional immigrant workers will be allowed into the u.s. this year. senator mikulski says a federal government will release 25,000 more visas for temporary foreign workers. it is a move that's long been sought by seasonal employers who often have trouble finding worker pz. june cane was killed by two suspects off bel air road in fullerton back on july 16th. police believe it was an attempted robbery gone awry. the reward was increased to $4,000 for information related to the arrest of the suspects. the husband of a new york woman that caused a car crash of her and several others wants her body exhumed. denise? >> reporter: daniel schuller

says a medical problem may have caused the deadly crash that killed his wife, their young daughter and three nieces. police say diane schuller downed more than ten vodkas and smoked marijuana before driving a minivan the wrong way and crashing head on into an suv. her husband says he never saw his wife drunk and the couple went through a normal routine before he last saw her head out in her minivan. >> i go he to bed every night knowing my heart is clear, she did not drink. she's not an alcoholic. you listen to all that. she is not an alcoholic. >> reporter: the attorneys suggest various medical possibilities may be to blame including diabetes, stroke, and even a mouth abscess. kai? >> aing to becology report found the woman's blood alcohol hefl at more than twice the legal limit. the search for british toddler madeleine mccann has moved from europe to australia. as sheila macvicar reports,

investigators launched an international search for a woman who may know what happened to the little girl. >> she was on her own. >> reporter: a retired detective hired by the mccanns and the family spokesman announced they had a new lead today. 3-year-old madeline disappeared in may of 2007 from the family's vacation report in portugal. in spite of a vast police search and reconstruction of the way she might look now, her fate remains unknown. today, clarence mitchell said they were looking for a woman who spoke to a british man in barcelona a few days after madeline's disappearance. >> the witness became aware of a well-dressed woman who he describes as appearing agitated. >> reporter: what the woman, who may be australian, said to the man, detectives believe, may indicate she knew something about what happened to madeline. elizabeth palmer, cbs news, london. >> madeline was nearly 4 years old when she disappeared may

3rd, 2007. aerosmith front man steven tyler is hospitalized after falling from the stage in south dakota. he was performing on stage when he injured his head, neck, and shoulder last night. a doctor who attended to tyler after the fall says the singer appeared to be in good spirits as he was taken away to a hospital. good news from the world health organization. drug manufacturers are on track to begin delivery of the h1n1 vaccine in september. several drugmakers started testing the twine flu vaccine in humans and early safety results are expected. speeding the vaccine to the market will not compromise its safety. maryland's senior senator continues to undergo therapy for an injured ankle. kellye lynn caught up with senator mikulski just hours before she headed to washington to cast her vote for sonia sotomayor. >> reporter: senator mikulski says one of the thing she's' had to learn since becoming a

patient is patience. >> hi, everybody. >> reporter: after being wheeled into a conference room at mercy medical center, senator barbara mikulski joked about being off her feet. >> i now have this boot which the doctor convinced me he as very therapeutic. i saw it as a way of kicking butt. >> reporter: it's been nearly three weeks since she fell down steps at her church breaking her ankle in three places requiring major surgery. >> on the 27th, we took her to the operating room to reconstruct her broken ankle with stainless steel plates and screws. >> reporter: immediately she started physical therapy a place she calls boot camp. >> every day, twice a day i'm in occupational therapy and physical therapy. i'm doing pushups and leg presses and so on. >> reporter: exercises to keep the rest of hadder body strong while her ankle recovers. >> this is tough love. it's love but man it is tough.

and finally, i'm in an environment where i get more orders than i give. >> reporter: mikulski says her blackberry has been her best friend a way to conduct business without leaving the rehab center. >> every time i go into her room, she's working, doing work from here in the hospital. she's been a champ. shea's really a remarkable person how tough she is. >> see you later. >> reporter: senator mikulski has been at mers a medical center around the clock since breaking her ankle. the doctor says she could go home in the next week or so. i'm kellye lynn with healthwatch. >> senator mikulski should be fully recovered in a couple of months. the social networking site twitter is back up and running this evening recovering from a hacker attack. it was shut down for several hours this morning. hackers launched an attack to overload the site with scores of computers at once to block legitimate users from getting

on. facebook was also slow but it's not clear if that was linked to the twitter attack. three baltimore police officers have been suspended after a teen's accusation this an unmarked cruiser drove into him as he sat on a dirt bike. why the baltimore humane society flush with small dogs and puppies. and an identifity theft scheme is uncovered after a state police officer makes a routine complaint. for all of those stories and a lot more read tomorrow's baltimore sun. a former baltimore man suffers from arthritis. despite the pain and stiffness, he's riding a bike across america. as suzanne collins reports it's to raise awareness and money for the disease. >> reporter: david started in seattle on june 57b8g. he's pumped over hills, glided across plains and now reach add nap list. the cross country ride ends sunday on his 60th birthday in cape may, new jersey in memory

of his mother. >> my mother was diagnosed with spinal stenosis and osteoarthritis and spent the last 15 years of her life in a wheelchair. >> reporter: he lived in baltimore until recently he headed the arthritis foundation board. his ride is meant to increase awareness about the disease. so far, he's raised $56,000. >> people think of arthritis and immediately think of it as an old person's disease. there are 300,000 children in america with rheumatoid arthritis. it is an auto immune disease. >> reporter: all of his needs are on board his bike. >> a collapsible spare tire. here's all my tools. this is a first aid kit. >> reporter: the insurance broke her to continue working during the trek so he has a laptop, cell phone and broadband capability. david is regularly contributing onlane to a blog where people can follow his progress and also read interesting stories like when he spent the night at a zoo. >> nickerson, kansas, for instance, i stay ted exotic animal farm and motel. >> reporter: the arthritis

others came for jobs. ron matz tells us what it means for the economy in eastern baltimore county. >> reporter: sky eye chopper 13 showed you the early arrivals at the new chick-fil-a at the martin shopping center. overnight in the rain, they pitched tents. the first 100 in line received certificates for 52 free meals. good morning, joe, you are first in line. >> how are you doing? >> reporter: towson's joe judge spent more than 30 hours in line. >> yeah it's worth it just because of the fun and to have something to tell my children one day that this is something crazy i did. >> reporter: the story is much more than just a photo op. it's about the economy. 70 new jobs were created here. >> i actually ended up giving out over 1,000 applications, ran out of applications three times. had to order more applications because i never really anticipated having quite that many people applying for a job. >> i was out of work for a

home from the gym, her town home was wrapped in crime tape and the police were waiting to break the news her husband of six months was dead. despite what you see, police say she was no grieving widow. >> she wanted to have her husband killed. >> reporter: the plot was hatched at this gas station saturday. according to police, dahlia handed the man pictures of her husband and townhouse and $1200 for a handgun. >> she was very calm, very cool. she was very calculated. she offered a lot of options as far as how and when and where he might want to take care of her husband. >> reporter: one problem. the man was a confidential informant for the police. at the next meeting two days later at this drugstore, an undercover officer posed as the hitman. >> the undercover officer gave her several options. are you sure you want to do this? she maintained her positive attitude by saying i am 5,000% sure i want this done. >> reporter: that scene at her house wednesday as the grand

bomb into the airport was released from jail seven weeks earlier. a new york judge ordered him to get a psychiatric exam but he failed to do so. he is charged with making a terrorist threat and if found competent will appear in court soon. a houston man is changing a tire when all of a sudden he gets hit by one. the dash cam captures the police officer and the man. then out of in mowhere, the tire goes whizzing by the officer's feet. it only grazed him as you see, and he was not harmed. sad news out of hollywood tonight. director john hughes has died of a heart attack while visiting his family in manhattan. he's known for launching the careers of many high-profile actors. he lived in illinois and set many of his films in the chicago area. john hughes was 59 years old. check in with "eyewitness news" at 6:00.

saturday afternoon. i'll be with gary and buck for the broadcast starting at 1:00. the ravens welcome the redskins to town a week from tonight. you won't see wide receiver mark clayton in that game. the team announced clayton will be out for two or three preseason games. speaking of injuries, offensive linemen ben grubbs among the walking wounded suffering from a ankle injury. and an apparent hand injury but coach harbaugh says it wasn't reported to him as significant. farmer raven rod woodson is two day as way from his induction into the pro football hall of fame. known more for his ten years with the steeler hes, he is the first with a ravens uniform to earn the hall of fame status. i spoke with him earlier today. >> my four years in baltimore gave me a great opportunity to play with a tremendous player in ray lewis, tremendous franchise in the baltimore ravens.
