he speeds through baltimore city and crashes into another car killing the driver. tonight the investigation and why the suspect was running. hello, i'm denise koch. here's what people are talking about tonight. police spotted a stolen car in downtown baltimore this afternoon. minutes later that car crashed into another car and tonight one person is dead, two others injured. eyewitness news is staying on the story. keel he lee mcpherson joins us live outside shock trauma.

>> reporter: police say they were not following or chasing this suspect but some witnesses tell me they disagree. but at the end of the day a woman dade here at shock trauma and that suspect is in serious condition. we don't know where the woman driving this car was heading to on calhoun street but it's here where the drive ended violently when a suspected car thief crashed into her. she died at shock trauma. >> i didn't even get a chance to blink my eye. just rolled, and the next thing i know i was smashed up against the wall. >> reporter: we are looking at that time side of the vehicle that was hit by the stolen car. the fire department had to pull her out of the car, and they tell me by the time they got here she already was not breathing. >> the stolen car had been spotted by regional auto theft task force's daily patrol. 10 blocks later the hijacked car t-bened the woman's car. >> when they attempted the

follow, something spooked the driver of that honda accord, at which time he took off at a high rate of speed. before the officers from the task for could follow, based on the way that driver was driving, they were ordered to pretty much break it off immediately. >> reporter: but some witnesses say it looks like a chase. >> it was three unmarked vehicles right behind, following that car. if them cars was not chasing that car, their car would not have been speeding at that time rate of speed that they were speeding. >> did they have sirens or lights or anything? >> they did not have no sirens but they was definitely following that vehicle. >> when i looked up the police car was coming behind him, not speeding, had on his flashing lights, no sirens or anything. then when i looked up again the car was flipping and hit the wall, and that's when i remember saying, well, how did the police get here so soon. >> reporter: police say the car had been hijacked using a weapon. now, the suspect is still in the hospital and has not been

formally charged, but he could face charges, including vehicular manslaughter. kelly mcpherson, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you, kelly. a third person was injured by debris and taken to the hospital. no identities have yet been released. hat happened again. this time a cat is douse weed a liquid and set on fire. this latest case adds to a growing list of animal abuse in baltimore city. eight month old gabrielle is fighting for her life more than a week after she was deliberately set on fire. >> someone in the neighborhood shared with them that they witnessed two boys throwing stones and a brick at this cat, who we've now named gabriel, and after they did that they caught her and poured a liquid on her and then set her on fire, and she panicked and was rolling around and got the fire out, and they picked her up again and set her on fir again. >> animal control first went looking for her july 28th but could not find her.

she finally showed up today but in very bad shape. >> she was badly burned al her side and her buttocks. >> this isn't the first time an animal has been set on fire. back in may a pit bull was also set on fire. she was burned so badly she had to be euthanized. last month a cat was found chained to a fence, fireworks set off under its head, killing the cat. since then five cats have been tortured, four of them died. >> unfortunately there were no witnesses to the crimes against the other four cats but we believe we do have some witnesses for this crime. and really, the only way that this problem can be stopped is if witnesses come forward. >> gabrielle, the latest cat injuredl be transferred to the recycled love tomorrow where she will be treated for her injuries. if anyone has information on who did this, you should call police. well, the man who walked into a pittsburgh area health club and killed three women

ben cardin voted aye this afternoon. she will be sworn in as the 111th court justice this saturday. and the senate vowed to refuel the popular cash for clunkers programs. the infusion of $2 billion comes just in time for dealerships and customers. >> reporter: with a little help from uncle sam, jeer and bet cease mason are hoping to trade in their old explorer for something new. >> a good example of what can happen if the government does it right. >> reporter: the $1 billion spent on the cash for clunkers program has significantly boosted private spending. dealerships are back on track. >> we normally stock 150 to 200 cars, and as you can see now, i'm down to maybe 50 cars. >> sales manager paul says they sold two weeks worth of cars in just four days. >> obviously you wish you had

more for people coming in for cars, but we do have them incoming, so they just to have wait a bit to get them. >> reporter: economists say adding $2billion for the cash for clunkers program could mean an $18 billion boost to the economy. here's how it works. clunkers, also known as gas guzzlers, are eligible for a rebate from $3500 to $4500. the trade-in vehicle has to get a combined fuel economy rating of 18 miles per gallon or less. >> it's an excellent deal for the customer. >> definitely has more head room. >> reporter: experts believe 750,000 clunkers will be replaced with new cars that are safer and better for the environment. >> it it's taking all of these terrible gas mileage cars off the road, and they're not just recycling them, they're getting rid of them. >> reporter: the masons are taking home this new toyota --

scion. jessica kartalija, wjz. >> the government has a website where you can see if your car qualifies for the cash for clunkers program. for a link, log on to wjz.com. the company bidding for a slots license in baltimore says hat acquired a bigger and better location. the baltimore city entertainment group says it would like to open a facility on russell street just south of m&t bank stadium. the 11-acre lot would allow to the operate as many as 3700 slot machines. a state commission must still approve the company's slot license. maryland's crab industry hit the jackpot today after months of struggling to find workers the federal government is now allowing thousands of temporary foreign workers to enter the country. eyewitness news is live along the water. kai jackson explains why some say these visas are vital to maryland. >> reporter: that's right, denise. local eastern shore crab houses are relieved that the visa

restrictions have been relaxed. in fact, 25,000 h 2b visas will be granted. crabs and packaged crab meat are big sellers. >> we love crabs, and my kids have been picking crabs since they were three years old. we love crabs. >> reporter: but getting crabs or crab meat this season could cost you an arm and a leg, because the government restricted the number of visas given to immigrants. foreign workers make up the bulk of those who pick crab meat. >> the seasonal workers save our sea had food. >> reporter: while recovering from surgery at mercy medical center senator barbara mikulski priced the department of homeland security after the agency announced it will release additional visas for crab processing in maryland. >> i'm so pleased that they found 20,000 of the special visas, and that the people worked in maryland, went by the rules and returned back to

is under arrest after police say she hired a hit man to kill her husband. her reaction as police said her husband of six months was dead. but that wasn't actually the case. police were in on the plot. they say she contact an undercover officer, giving them $1200 to buy a gun to kill her husband michael. he was shocked when police filled him in. >> i guess it, but i don't get it. technically, if it's 10:50, i should have been dead at like 9:00. >> police staged a crime scene, then took her to the station where she found out her husband was still alive. the couple was together for four months before getting married. well, the woman who had an affair with former presidential candidate john edwards was in a rawley court today. -- raleigh court today. the two-time presidential

candidate allegedly used campaign funds to pay hunter's video production firm over $100,000. edwards admitted he had had an affair with hunter, which ended, he said, in 2006. well, the man who directed some of the best love teen cult films of the '80s died today. john hughes died of a massive heart attack. he created the popular films "breakfast club," and also the holiday hit," home alone." the reward is now doubled for information in the murder of a baltimore county liquor store other than. 57-year-old june kang was shot and killed during an attempted robbery last month. today $2,000 was added to the original reward of $2,000, for a total of 4,000. police are looking for two

suspects. anyone with information should call baltimore county police. a date has been set. and now many are questioning whether a fair and impartial jury can be found for the corruption trial of mayor sheila dixon. mike hellgren has some opinions and analysis. >> reporter: from the day the original indictments came down -- >> we just wanted to see if you would mind saying any comment about. this. >> reporter: the mayor's corruption case has been dice sec and documented for the public, and all that attention begs the question, how difficult it will be to seat an impartial jury when her trial starts in november. >> going to to have go through an awful lot of jurors to make that happen. baltimore defense attorney william bowie says jury selection is crucial. >> the defense attorneys are going to try to seat as many african-american women on that jury as possible. it's been deemed to be a person that's really picked on by the state prosecutor. >> reporter: dixon is not the first high-profile maryland politician to face this kind of

scrutiny. former powerful state senator tommy bromwell entered a guilty plea, avoiding a trial, but lawyers claimed there was no way an impartial jury could be seated in another trial. she later pleaded no contest. >> we're just thanking god and giving him all the praises and the blessings for how the verdict turned out. >> reporter: jurors acquitted former senator larry young a decade ago. >> what made up our mind? the evidence. >> reporter: he was the last big politician the state prosecutor's office charged before mayor dicks on, whose position could benefit her. >> whether or not mayor dixon testifies will probably have the greatest bearing on this case. >> reporter: the mayor's lawyers say they plan to file several motions to dismiss this case before it ever goes to trial. at city hall, mike hellgren, wjz, eyewitness news. >> the new date for dixon's trial on theft and perjury
