. good evening thanks for joining is. the national weather service has issued a heat advisory for tomorrow. it's going to be worse than today which was quite the cooker out there. southeast baltimore people turned to the shady trees and cool swimming pools of patterson park. we need to be extra cautious as this hot cell continues. we got no rain to cool off the city. in fact it's still rather warm out there. eyewitness news has complete coverage of the heat tonight. we go to meteorologist bernadette woods for a look at

tonight's storms that came through. >> this is how it looked earlier tonight. what we want to show you what's going on right now. the watch box is still hanging on right there but the thing is it has been dropped by the national weather service. as the storms quickly got out of here we had a few. that was about it. they clipped parts of hartford and diesel counties. we vice-president seen many damage reports. there were wind gusts probably up to 40 or maybe even 50 miles per hour as they made their way through, but they are all gone and offshore, and as we can take you back a little bit that was the tail end before it moved out of here. we're left with the hottest air we've had this season. we're going to 92 degrees tomorrow. heat advisory for a lot of us. derek valcourt on the precautions you can take in the heat >> reporter: this kind of weather can get the best of even healthy people if they don't stay hydrated, and that is why the city has enacted

their first code red heat alert of the summer. >> when the sun goes down so do the temperatures. it's a welcome break from earlier in the day when thermometers passed 90 and just kept ongoing. >> i feel like i'm about to melt. i want to take my clothes off all together but they would probably arrest plea. >> reporter: those in their clothes found any kind of shade they could thankful for what little breeze mother nature could produce. air conditioners were working in overdrive on a day when just walking down the street makes you sweat like you've been doing hard labor. >> we're human. we are going to per spire. >> reporter: heat rising off the pavement enough to make people just plain police ecial. >> i prefer snow to hot weather any day. >> reporter: the city closely monitors these weather conditions. that's why through tuesday they are turning the city's 6 community actions centers into cooling centers. >> we have had about 15 to 20 people so far. >> reporter: with plenty of fresh ice and free water and

most importantly a place to relax in some comfortable air- conditioning. city health officials know the heat can be dangerous. >> especially for those who aren't able to respond to this type of heat. we have a lot of elderly folks, folks with chronic health conditions that don't have air- conditioning. so it's really important for folks to check on them, make sure that they are okay. >> reporter: and it's not just people who need protection, animal advocates say it's important to provide pets with plenty of water too and keep them out of the heat during the dog days of summer. the city is also giving out free one way bus passes for folks who want to get to those cooling centers but don't have a way to get there. for more information on how you can get those bus passes check out the city's free information line at 311. we're live at federal hill derek valcourt eyewitness news. here's a look at the list of cooling centers. the centers will be open from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. p both monday and tuesday.

the emergency cooling centers will offer air-conditioning and ice water to help residents stay cool. you can also go to any city recreation and park center throughout the city. as we reported if you don't have a way to get to the cooling centers the city is offering free bus passes for information call 311 if you live in baltimore. check in with eyewitness news for instant updates on the forecast, the heat alert and a complete list of those cooling centers. you can log on to wjz.com. we want to switch gears we have breaking news coming in. we have learned a man has been shot in the cherry hill neighborhood of south baltimore. city police moments ago apparently tell us the man was hit in the chest and armpit he's being taken to shock trauma. homicide detectives are on the scene due to the severity of his injuries. we'll have the very latest on this tomorrow on the eyewitness news morning edition. meanwhile up in new york crews are making major progress finding the wreckage from a fatal midair collision over the

hudson river this weekend. the search for bodies will resume again tomorrow, crews pulled the mangled wreckage of a helicopter out of the hudson river sunday. a small plane flying at about 1100 feet ran into the back of the chopper both then plunged into the water. >> the helicopter sustained significant damage. they they are going to be conducting further examination of the wreckage to determine what pieces might be missing. >> reporter: 9 people were instantly killed in the crash that rained debris into the river. divers have still not recovered two of the bodies. >> the divers had extremely challenging conditions with current visibility. at times it was no more than one foot. >> reporter: the divers suspended their search at about 6:00 sunday night. they will be back on the water monday morning. the national transportation safety board has recommended more vigorous regulation for helicopter tours, but the faa has not followed through with

the suggestion. the tours fall into the category of what's called on demand flights. a government report issued just last month shows 109 people died in accidents involving on demand flights in 2007 and 2008. during the same time period there were no deaths in commercial plane accidents. >> they can make the helicopters operate at a lower altitude than the fixed wing aircraft coming through the area. if you're at different altitudes you're never going to have an accident like this. >> reporter: 16-year-old douglas altman was a passenger on the private plane along with his father daniel and uncle steve who was a pilot. the crash also took the lives of the helicopter pilot and five italian tourists celebrating a couple's 25th wedding anniversary. this is new york's deadliest air accident since 200 1 when a commercial jet crashed in queens killing 265 people. today all helicopter tours along the hudson were

temporarily grounded. some scary moments aboard a northwest airlines flight shortly after takeoff from raleigh. the pilot believe she hit a huge flock of birds the plane turned around landed without its left engine. 153 people onboard made it back to the airport without any injury put on separate flights. a safety system meant to prevent train collisions failed before a deadly accident in washington d. c. that news comes from the national transportation safety board. they are still investigating the cause of june's metro crash that killed 9 people. the ntsb says back in march a subway operator had to use the emergency brakes to avoid hitting another train, but a spokesperson from d. c.'s metro system says the two incidents involved separate pieces of equipment. police continue to search for the robbers that killed a suspected baltimore county store owner they are upping the ante. june m. canning was killed at his liquor store last month. the korean american grocer

association has posted additional $2,000 in reward money. police say they are really counting on you. >> what we're hoping is that this will begin to entice some people who have information to please contact us. detectives don't have a few leads and they are working on those leads but unfortunately we do not have an identity or arrest. >> very limited identity of the suspects. two black males one wearing dark t-shirt and the other wearing a light t-shirt. and shorts. a kitten is struggling to survive after being tortured and set on fire. this is the latest disturbing animal abuse cases in baltimore. >> reporter: another brutal case of animal cruelty. witnesses in this pimlico neighborhood tell police they saw boys torture the 8 month old kitten by throwing bricks on her. >> they caught her poured a

liquid on her and set her on fire. she panicked and was rolling around and they set her on fire again. >> reporter: the kitten called gabrielle was burned all over her side and lower back. rescuers say they wandered for 10 days before being found. >> fortunately for her her burns are located on one side of her body not fully all over her body. >> reporter: one week later she is getting much needed tlc. >> she's purring she loves attention she loves to be petitioned. she's in no distressed at all. we're watching to be sure that the infection does not accelerate. >> reporter: this is just one of several recent animal abuse cases here in the baltimore area. >> there have been five cats that have been tortured, four have been tortured and killed. this is the fifth cat. >> reporter: and it's not only cats being targeted. earlier this summer a pit bull was soaked with gasoline, then set on fire. the dog who rescuers named

phoenix died in a pennsylvania animal shelter. >> really, the only way that this problem can be solved is if witnesses come forward so they can be -- crimes can be investigate and prosecuted. >> reporter: in just a few weeks gabrielle may have a new home. >> we're going to take our time go through everybody's applications we thank everybody that has extended themselves in donations and also in wanting to give her a home. >> reporter: jessica. if you have any information on the cause or any other cases of animal cruelty you are urged to call baltimore city police. president obama is in mexico tonight for the so- called three amigos summit. he is meeting with the leaders of mexico and canada discussing a variety of issues including preparations for swine flu and trade relations. the drug war along the mexican border was discussed tonight. the mexican president urged obama to release funding that has been held pup because of

some human rights concerns. the former speaker of the house and current democratic party chair went head-to-head on healthcare this morning echoing the conflict being heard at town halls across the country. >> people are very, very upset. they are upset because the stimulus was passed unred. they have this sense of thing of a machine running over them. >> the democratic party chair howard dean fired back at gingrich insisting that the healthcare plan gives people choice necessary the public or private sector. earlier this weekend a series of town hall forums across the country turned into shouting matches among citizens. wjz is helping to raise prostate cancer awareness this summer. we kicked off a series of free prostate cancer screenings. first one was host bid the first mount olive first baptist church. they lent their space to the cause and folks at chesapeake urology were on hand talking about the importance of

. right now prison is locked down in southern california 55 prison went to the hospital. the riot broke out between 1300

inmates. 80 officers responded with pepper spray and batons. luckily no staff members were hurt, but some of the prisoners injuries are considered life- threatening. south carolina governor mark sanford is making news again because of his time in the friendly skies. record show since sanford took office in 2003. he has used state aircraft to go to his children's sporting events hair and dentist apartments. state owned aircraft can only be used for official business. he made headlines back in june when he disappeared from office and turned out he was meeting up with his mistress down in argentina. the cash for clunkers program is running on empty again but not because of lack of cash this time. the program is so popular some dealers from pennsylvania to idaho say they are running low on popular fuel efficient vehicles. in fact one new york dealership had to close this weekend because they ran out of cars. haven't heard of this for a long time. it sold nearly a thousand cars in the last 30 days thanks to the cash for clunkers program.

under the program the federal government gives car owners 35 to $4,500 for their trade in. in tonight's consumer watch many major retailers are downsizing but others are targeting bargain shoppers quite successfully. as gigi barnett reports. resale stores are seeing a big boom. >> reporter: all of the jeans, shoes was first bought from customers. not from a design error manufacturer. play to's closet is a resale store. >> they are so cheap and they have pretty much everything. >> reporter: jeffrey harden owns play to's closet. he began noticing the trend late last year. >> people saw a way to get extra cash. they realized i might be a little more motivated to do this now than i would have been 6 months or a year ago. >> reporter: then a spike in sales followed at a time when many retail stores are closing shop or cutting back. >> we've had record sales

increases. we're busier than we've ever been. it's been pretty good for us. >> reporter: here's hour resale works. customers bring their jerntly used clean brands name clothes to a resale store they get cash and they put the clothes in the store. the markdown is much less than what shoppers would find at a retail store. >> it's ideal for college students. >> it's a good deal. the shirts are like $5. that's pretty cheap. >> reporter: resale and thrift stores continue to grow. over the past five years their numbers have increased by 5% every year. it's a trend store owners say will continue. >> these people who didn't shop here before now have found it. they found what a great great deal it is. >> reporter: it's what resale stores are banking on. gigi barnett wjz eyewitness news. one of my favorite ties from a thrift shop. sales at good will are also up. 23 of its stores reported a 9% boost in sales this year. mld has certainly seen its

fair share of severe weather this year and tonight we have a warning for homeowners. it has been a calling card for thieves. homes damaged during bad weather are being targeted. have your most important items with you such as papers with information on your identity. in baltimore county there was 770 cases of identity theft there are steps you can take to protect your identity. keep your important papers locked up shred any paperwork with your information on it that you do not need anymore. let's check in with meteorologist bernadette woods. we're talking about the heat index tomorrow about a hundred. >> it looks like it's coming our way. it's a reminder, we can totally survive this kind of weather but you have to be smart. check on the pets, check on the little kids. >> drink water. >> a lot of the sports camps have started up. you're going to be spending time outside drink water stay hydrated that does not include anything ca feen related.

keep that in mind if you're spending outside tomorrow because it's going to be heart. >> good advice. >> want to show you everything is gone. all the storms from earlier today. so now the focus shifts toward tomorrow and we have a heat advisory in effect for a good portion of the area and the primary hours are going to be between noon and 10:00 p.m. also notice off to the northeast in the philadelphia area excessive heat warnings also in effect. this isn't just for us. this is up and down the east coast we haven't had much of in this year so far. these are some of the storms that we saw. most of the activity did pass to the northeast of us. we saw strong thunderstorms come down through cecil and harper county down to kent county over to tell wear now offshore. it's calming down. we're going to see some fog form and temperatures that are very wrong. down to 70 degrees, 75 in baltimore. 84 degrees in d. c. 80s to the

southwest of that. the dew point 66 degrees, that was up at 70 today. it's going back up there again tomorrow. it's that in combination with the temperature that's going to make it feel like it's over 100 tomorrow. now today we did get to 92 degrees. tomorrow the air temperature's going to get to about 97 degrees. the record for tomorrow is close today's record of a hundred degrees. don't think we'll get there but it will feel that way outside. here's the storm providing all of our weather right now. the storms from earlier way offshore. this is a cold front part of the stole that's going to come into play. as long as it's to the north we stay in the hot air south of it. that's where we are right now. we will be again tomorrow, and we will be again on tuesday. after that everything gets pushed back down to the south and we only have a couple of days in the 90s before we get back into the 80s. but as far as thunderstorm chances go. slight tomorrow little bit better with the front coming in tuesday. notice this moisture out to the west. that's going to come our way thursday into friday with
