hi, everybody. i'm sally thorner. >> i'm kai jackson. >> there is a heat advisory until 8:00 tonight. but if you're working like these construction workers, you know the air is oppressive. >> by noon, it was over 90 degrees in 20 city schools, holding summer classes. closing early. here you see students at poly dismissing. right now, feels like it's 100 degrees. on what feels like the most uncomfortable day of the year so far. >> adam may has more on the dangers and precautions that you need to take. but first, bob turk has more on today's sizzling temperatures. >> maybe in the next hour. it might go to the hottest day of the year. real close. take a look at the temperatures here. we're at 94 degrees here. ocean city. yes.

99 at the airport. cumberland at 91. but it feels, with your average humidity, feels like 91. ocean city, the real-feel, 111 degrees. and because of these high temperatures, we have that heat advisory in effect until 8:00 tonight. by that time, temperatures will be falling back to more normal ranges. there is thunderstorm activity going on to the west of us. you folks in maryland are getting a pretty good batch showers. out in far western maryland, have a pretty good chance of getting really, nice, heavy showers, which will cool temperatures. maybe gusty winds and heavy rains out there. we probably won't see that until tomorrow. at least we'll get a break. bernadette has a look at that. >> that's right. want to show you an update here. today, we're thinking high about 95 degrees. and that would make it the hottest as bob was saying so far this season. but the thing is, this is how

it compares to averages and to records. so you can see the art graphic that we got going on right now. also issue the other reason this is happening is the jet stream has finally pushed off to the north. it's been very far south, all season long. with it to the north, it is tropical air. this isn't that abnormal. so we're not that used to it. and that's why it feels so thick and hot outside. >> okay, bern. thank you. our first warning weather coverage continues with adam may. adam, is there any kind of breeze coming off the water? >> not enough. i'll tell you that much. it's really hot when you're standing here in the direct sun. we check in the with a number of hospitals. so far, no one is reporting any major, heated -- heat-related illness. but people are taking precautions. >> reporter: at a soccer camp

this week, student athletes take numerous breaks here. >> they gave us a lot of water breaks. >> reporter: outdoor practice eventually moved indoors. >> you have to get a feel for the kids. they're all at different levels. you can't assume that they're all ready to be intense in this kind of heat. >> if your temperature obviously is over 105, that is heat stroke-like. and that can cause pretty nasty consequences if it's not dealt with early. >> reporter: the blazing sun, no stop for road crews. but some find it a losing battle. >> you going to work all day? >> not in this. it's too hot. >> reporter: that adds esctraexpense to the sidewalk work in northeastern baltimore. >> they can add ice or retardant. >> summer classes at 20 baltimore city schools were also dismissed just before noon. >> they let us out early. because they don't really have air conditioning. >> i think it was like 97, 98.

this happened about 10:30 this morning. two suspects entered the gas station. struck the owner in the head. causing some injury, and fled the scene. apparently police received information that the suspects, two of them ran from the scene, ran into a house in the 4300 block of mary avenue, which is just off bel air road in the northeast district. police had laid siege to that home most of the day. from around 11:45 this morning. when you see s.w.a.t. teams driving away now. entered the residence. found at least one suspect inside. and a 94-year-old man that was also held inside that home for most of the day. now, the 94-year-old man was transported to a local area hospital. there is no word on his condition. the suspect, one at this point, who has been taken into custody by baltimore city police. the second suspect remains at large. police are searching for him at this hour. >> thank you, captain mike perry, reporting live from sky

eye chopper 13. police divers find parts of a plane. nine people were killed in the weekend crash. drew levinson reports for wjz, with the newly released 911 tapes. >> reporter: divers are facing poor visibility, and treacherous currents as they try to find the two remaining victims of a midair collision. seconds after the sightseeing crash, calls began pouring into 911. >> 911 operator, what is your emergency. >> i just saw an airplane hit a helicopter in the hudson river here. >> >> and i saw something explode. and something fall after that. so i would hurry. >> there is nobody coming up. i don't see anybody coming up. >> reporter: over the weekend, crews brought over the wreckage to the nearby helicopter. now they're hoping to pull outlet single-engine piper lancer. >> we know they're on a converging craft. both aircraft were gaining altitude at the time of the collision. >> reporter: this should help

investigators piece together how the aircraft collided, killing nine people. planes flying below 11 news- - 11,000 feet used this visual navigation. so a pilot's first responsibility is called see and avoid. >> there is no radar operator looking at you all the time, warning you with other traffic. >> new york's mayor says the faa should decide whether they should have accidents. fingerprints were used to identify the italian tourists. divers are still looking for two members of the pennsylvania family on board the plane. in hoboken, new jersey, drew levinson, wjz eyewitness news. this is the worst air disaster in new york city since a commercial jet crash in queens killed 265 people back in november 2001. one year after a truck driver is killed in a three-car crash on the bay bridge, work

to strengthen the bridge's barriers continues today. john willard was killed when his tractor-trailer was forced off the road by a driver who fell asleep at the wheel. they found that the bridge's safety standards did not meet up to standards, but if they had, it would not have stopped the truck from going off the bridge. >> well, fortunately, nothing too serious, as far as crashes go this afternoon. we have that police situation going on that has all lanes blocked off bel air road. that's going to be between white avenue and powell avenue. harford road is your best alternate right now. meantime, a few accidents. two accidents in the city. bel air at frank ford avenue. and reisterstown road. as far as delays go, a slight one on the harrisburg expressway. and the southbound express lanes.

the death toll climbs to eight after a crash in california. a dodge neon was running from police. when it slammed into a pickup truck. five people were thrown from the vehicle. four killed instantly. the three suspects in the neon were also killed. two adults in the truck survived the crash. a dozen inmates remain hospitalized today, injured in a massive prison riot. happened in california. prison officials say racial tection -- tension started this incident at the california institute for men in chino. more than 80 corrections

officers used pepper spray, batons, and foam to break up the melee. the uprise lasted about four hours. no staff were injured. an american soldier lost his life on the battlefield. but even in death, he saved lives. >> reporter: ben cop became every bit the army ranger had wanted to be since he was 7. he had done two tours in iraq by the time he was 21. then came afghanistan. and dozens of dangerous missions, hunting the taliban. the two weeks before he was set to come home, ben was gravely wounded, saving his unit in a firefight. he was airlifted off the battlefield and made it halfway around the world to army reed medical center. ben stevens rushed to be at her son's side. >> near the end, when we knew ben wasn't going to survive. and there were so many prayers being offered for ben, i told

ben that, you know, it's up to him if he wanted to keep that for himself or give them away. and he chose to give them away. >> he was my hero. and i loved him. >> reporter: ben cox' heroics didn't end in afghanistan. even in death, he kept saving lives. >> i kind of like referred to ben in the third person as my heart now. >> reporter: until last fall, judy meikle was the picture of health. then one day, she woke up and couldn't breathe. she was shocked when she got to the hospital. >> there was no choice. there was no way to repair it. i needed a transplant. >> ben's mom jill heard about judy's plight from her cousin. and she knew her cousin's sacrifice would be judy's salvation. >> that's got to be what a miracle feels like. >> i don't think there can be a better tribute to jill's generosity, and ben's -- and

investors are anxious to hear what the feds have to say about the economy. and whether policy makers will hint as to a rate hike in the future. mcdonald's, continues to hint at a recession. saying sales have climbed. they have benefited from budget- conscious consumers and its new coffee drink. gmc is slowly getting back into the leasing business. it will start offering in 45 states. gmac says with financial restructuring, it has made leasing a viable refinancing option again. gm and ebay are launching a new program tomorrow that will let consumers haggle over the price of a car or truck online. nearly all of the dealers will take part. it could go national if the trial program is a success. drivers aren't getting a break at the gas pump. prices are up to $2.64 a gallon

that looks great. >> that is the place to be today. that is where you're going to find some relief. and that's where you can actually enjoy the meet. looks so great in the water today. i want to show you first warning doppler radar because of all of the heat going on out there. we have seen some thunderstorms fire up. this is ahead of a cold front. already, some strong thunderstorms moving our way. and they'll be moving over toward cumberland in probably about the next 15 minutes. let's switch it over and show you the heat that we are dealing with. 94 degrees in baltimore. 98 as well. we're actually down to in ocean city, and 93 degrees in cumberland. feels like 99 degrees in

baltimore. 100 in d.c. and 109 in ocean city, it was 111 last hour on the heat index. so far today, we have topped out at 94 degrees. that ties our hottest day so far this season. the thing is, in between hours, sometimes it jumps, so there is a chance that could have been higher. so we'll keep you updated on that as we head through the newscast here. just minor technicalities here. here's what we have going on. heat advisory going on today. and here's the cold front out to the west, with the thunderstorms firing ahead of it, because of the very hot and muggy air mass that we do have on top of us. that is eventually going to move out ahead of us and given us a better chance tomorrow. there is a low along this front. it will continue to move off to the east, giving us another chance for showers and thunderstorms as we head into thursday and friday. and probably even still through wednesday, too. for the forecast today, about

funeral. major entertainers and the jackson family are slated to perform. and the surprises surrounding jackson's personal life aren't letting up. the godfather of jackson's children, former british child star mark lester, now claims to be the father of his daughter paris. lester says jackson asked him to be a sperm donor for debbie row. in los angeles, manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness news. >> the date for the vienna tribute concert is expected for later this week. the man who killed three people and then himself at a pittsburgh health club, was questioned by police a week earlier. sally joins us live from a newsroom. >> george sadiny matched the description of a man who pulled a grenade out of a pittsburgh bus. police say he was brought in but eventually let go. because the witness who saw the act couldn't confirm he was the one. police did not confirm if the grenade was ever found. the witness did not report the

incident until later in the day. he was questioned two days later and denied the allegations. vic, back to you. >> thank you, sally. two of the nine people wounded in the health club attack. a heat alert is in effect for much of maryland right now. despite the heat warning, eyewitness news caught some die- hard football players out on the grid iron. and right now, the heat index is around 100 degrees. and as soon as you walk outside, you certainly can feel it. pob is here now with the updated numbers from first warning weather. bob? >> actually, in the last hour, we dropped a little bit. probably the most uncomfortable day we've had all year. this is as of 4:00. we were 94. 94. humidity down to 41%. ocean city, their actual temperature at the airport, they're at 98. oakland, 72 degrees. they're getting rain out there. however, our heat index is coming in at 99. ocean city came in at 109.

makes an announcement. >> the pilot says there are storms and that they couldn't land. >> reporter: that's when the nightmare began. they sat there all night. 47 passengers, stramed -- stranded on the rochester runway, for over nine hours. they say they were served no food. just one can of soda. and then the toilets broke down. >> you're almost numb because you're so exhausted. so you kind of doze off, but you can't really sleep because babies are crying and the smells are getting worse. >> as frustrating as for continental said the passengers could not get off because the security screener his gone home for the night. saturday morning, 9:00 a.m., the continental flight finally deplanes. >> everybody just went up to the continental counter. and they were emotional and they were screaming and yelling. >> reporter: but their ordeal was not over. the passengers waited two more hours before boarding the same plane for the final leg of

their 14-hour trip. express jet issued an apology, saying staff and crew were ensuring safety and following federal regulations. we will fully investigate the issues since this does not meet our standards for customer service. >> express jet says that adding to the delay was the fact that the crew had worked their maximum number of hours, so the passengers had to wait while a new crew was brought in. the investigation is continuing into a carroll county plane crash. robert and letty died when their small, two-seater crashed neartowny -- near taneytown. chris siemba was an experienced pilot who flew several times a week from the air strip. a pediatrician has died after a car accident. dr. jose alvarado, passed away as a result of his injuries. police say he's fanned into the back of a tractor-trailer this past wednesday.

hospital for several days now. she has been weakened by a series of strokes in recent years. she used to live in montgomery county. in tonight's healthwatch, good news. teri okita reports, there is one way they can reduce their risk of cancer to benefit their children as well. >> reporter: 33-year-old rachel roper is 5 1/2 months pregnant. and wants to make sure she's around for her unborn baby girl. >> i have a strong family history. my mom passed away at 42 from breast cancer. >> reporter: now, a new study shows that women can reduce their risk of getting breast cancer if they breast-feed. >> if they had ever breast-fed, their risk was 59% lower. >> reporter: the massive study followed 60,000 60,000 mothers for eight years. it found the length of time a

woman breast-fed did not matter. >> reporter: also, there was no exclusive risk for women who breast-fed, versus women who supplemented with formula and milk. >> reporter: cancer experts say breast-feeding would be a great preventive step for any other mom. >> it's something active they can do, even when they're young, to potentially modify their risk of developing breast cancer. >> reporter: rachel sees breast surgery specialist to explore her options for keeping cancer at bay. she says nursing her child is now a no-brainer. >> i'm excited to hear it. because i said that's all i want is to breast-feed my child. >> a healthy decision for mother and baby. >> and the data for that study was gathered between 1997 and 2005. let's check in on the roads now with sharon gibala. >> i'm happy to report that there is not much to report out

breaking news from japan, where a small earthquake has been reported in the tokyo area. this comes just one day after the city felt a registering of 7.1. deadliest attack today was a double truck blast that rocked a small village. two people loaded with explosives went off nearly simultaneously. officials warned that insurgents trying to derail security gains. two typhoons left hundreds of people missing. nearly 1 million people in china were forced to flee to safety. >> reporter: typhoon moric onot

washed ashore and destroyed thousands of homes in taiwan. a mudslide covered an entire town in the mountains. helicopters have carried about 100 residents to safety. up to 80 inches of rain saturated the ground. and caused the foundation under this hotel to give way. the building was swept away by rushing floodwaters. frantic rescue efforts are under way across the country. the military is funneling emergency supplies to the areas it can reach. up to 30,000 people have either lift their homes -- left their homes or lost their homes. it's the worst flooding to hit taiwan in more than 30 years. china issued evacuation orders, sending more than 1 million people rushing to higher ground on bicycles and buses. 2,000 homes are lost. and a second deadly typhoon hit

japan, triggering more mud slides and flooding thousands of homes. airplanes are grounded. railroad service is stopped. hari sreenivasan, wjz eyewitness news. >> the death toll continues to rise with nine people reported dead in japan. and 37 killed in the philippines, taiwan, and china. preparations are under way in hawaii, as tropical storm felicia closeds -- closes in. they are expected to bring very heavy rain. up to a foot. preliminary findings suggests responders to the 9/11 attacks may be at a higher risk for a multiple myeloma, cancer of the blood. researchers say law enforcement officers who helped, and cleanup had developed the illness. the median age and diagnosis is 71. but more than half of the

this is one of the hottest days we've experienced so far. but that's where you want to be. >> that's where you want to be. in the water. that is pretty cool. i'm not sure what that is. >> water temperatures around 80. pretty good. compared to the air temperatures, which is in the mid-90s most places. let's take a look at radar. there are storms out to the west. nothing around here yet. there may be an isolated shower later on. all of the act activities in far western maryland. pretty good showers in the last hour. they're beginning to break down a little bit. but they've had good rains. and temperatures have dropped. oakland is only about 72 now. and cumberland, getting showers very shortly. you folks out there are getting some relief. at the last report from cumberland came at 91. i guarantee you, next hour, they'll be about 72. around here, take a look at temperatures. last look, 94. and that ties for the hottest day of the summer. now, all things considered, that's not that bad for a whole

summer here in the baltimore area. 94 is the highest it's been all summer long. sketch. the dew point -- 67. the dew point has dropped. it's a little more comfortable now than it was an hour or two ago. still pretty obnoxious. humidity, 42%. but we have a nice breeze. if you're in the shade, it's not that horrible. west wind, barometer beginning to fall a little bit. around the region, 94 here. only 72 in oakland. 91 in cumberland. but they'll be dropping. the hot spot, with the wind off the land, and there's a lot of water west of ocean city. 98. it's humid and hot down there. really, really tough o. the beach, -- tough. on the beach, it's really tough. 99 is our heat index. some of these places, we'll fix the computer. 100, 107. some places got back over the 100-degree mark. showers out to the west, probably won't be making it

into our region. but all of these are kind of drying up. a big batch over west virginia. and a stronger area of showers showers and storms this. is what we expect to be in our region. tomorrow afternoon and behind it, it will get cooler. one more pretty hot day. with temperatures in the low 90s. probably not more than 91 or 92. front going through. showers and thunderstorms. a good bet. some with gusty winds. and then a chance on wednesday. with the low pressure not too far away, it will eventually start to cool down somewhat toward the middle and end of the week. west winds, 5 to 10 knots. sunrise, 6:16. tonight, then, an isolated thundershower. a warm low of 74. some suburbs may get to 69 or 70. tomorrow, partly sunny. another hot and humid day. showers and thunderstorms. if it gets gets to 95, that will make today the hottest day of the year. still to come tonight on eyewitness news.
