point. in towson, lightning lit up the sky. people did not escape the rain, a heavy downpour there as well. it comes after one of the hottest days. we have weather coverage. kai jackson has more but, first, we go to bob turk with more on the storms. >> impressive. they developed at 7:00 or 8:00. it is to the south and east of baltimore. northern delaware to annapolis to washington. let's go back a few hours. we saw this developing, 7:30 and 8:30. picked up an inch of rain and 45 minutes that's a lot of rain. how hot did it get. it got to almost 100 degrees. ocean city 99 with a heat index of 109. bwi a middle river 97.

white female in her teens or 20s. anyone with information should call police. a tragedy over the skies of new york now investigators are trying to figure out what happened. 9 people were killed when a plane collided with a sight- seeing plane. it one plane is trapped in the plane's wreckage. calls poured into 911 with accounts. >> a plane hit a helicopter, the helicopter went down into the water, the plane i'm he not sure where it is. >> i saw the last of it, i saw something explode and fall after that. >> and the accident has intensified pressure to tighten rules governing the air place over the river. the ntsb said 225 aircraft fly within three miles of the site every day. and they were arrested by the top cop but there is word the two men cuffed by the police commissioner will not be

the men fled to a home on mary avenue. they barricaded themselves inside with a 94-year-old resident. he was rescued and taken to the hospital. a suspect was arrested while the other is at large. and when a bike rider was killed near downtown last week, it set in motion a creation of a memorial. now as it is reported, there is danger that the city may remove it. >> last night a grass-roots memorial was chained and locked in maryland avenue. it is a ghost bike this is hon -- honoring john yates. it to mark where bike ares are killed for drivers to be aware and share the road. last week he was run over by a large white delivery truck. >> my world went, you know, because i knew. >> the driver didn't know or care to stop. >> it is on his conscious. god will take care of him. >> reporter: the biking

community rolled into action with the placement of its first ghost bike. only six years old the project has spread to 80 cities in 14 countries. some allow the memorials to stay up; others take them down. the city of baltimore's transportation department says that the chain will be cut and it will be taken do unin a week or so. when i told that to another biker, the mayor, she had different ideas. >> i will have a conversation i have not been here with the transportation to talk about the potential of keeping it up. if it is a symbol to make people aware i support it. >> reporter: near downtown, mike schuh. >> police are looking for information about the driver of the white truck that hit yates. and passengers on a express flight said it felt like being in a sardine can. they were forced to spend the night on the tarmac. they diverted it short of the

end to galena. heavy showers to the northwest and here this moved through the downtown region at 8:30. and down to queens town, scattered activity the heaviest now is just to the northwest, that's moving off to the east at 15 miles an hour. the shore and that's headed in your direction. as it moves, continues to move and it is holding together nicely. this is actually a good thing despite the fact we have wind and rain. it may help keep things cooler. let's take a look at temperatures around the region. got to 94. that tied for the hottest day of the year. back in july one more day. we did not break any records 678-9100 but the low is 70, 86, 65. that's theaverage and 154.

right now around the -- 154. and ocean city at 86, very shortly that storm will be dropping the temperatures to the 70s. baltimore city picked up almost an inch of rain, 45 minutes. the airport a half inch. very, very beneficial rains keeping things cool. cooling the pavement and the streets this evening. that may actually help keep things cooler tomorrow. it will be humid but we have a chance of storms tomorrow. 70s to 80s in some locations with are it didn't rain much. to the west. a frontal boundary tomorrow. that will move in our direction and showers and storms in the boundry t will turn cooler particularly wednesday and thursday afternoon and in the 80s. scattered showers. and if you are heading down that way and see some heat and
