house is taking the fight for reform online. a top aide to the president sent this. it lists reasons to the obama administration's agenda. >> it is important to address misconceptions or misimpressions that have been left out there about the bills. >> reporter: the president will make its case in person in who conservative areas of the country. he'll hold a town hall meeting in montana on friday. and another in colorado on saturday. >> he'll have his work cut out for him. opponents show no sign of backing down. >> reporter: some are being escorted out of town halls. one brought a photo of the president, altered to make him look like adolph adolf hitler. >> the lawmakers are trying their best to keep the dialogue going. >> reporter: but the white house knows they'll have to deal with opponents' fears if they want to get healthcare

now. they hope to be ready by this fall. summer is in full swing right now. and our weather is typically august. outside, it's sunny and warm, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms. in fact, there's a flash flood watch for several eastern shore counties. meteorologist tim williams is here with updated numbers from first warning weather. from what i saw today, tim, looks like the sun definitely played hide and seek with us. >> the reason we have the flash flood watch in effect, there is so much humidity and the dew point is high. there's a lot of energy out there, for these storms to work with, should they come down. all of the clutter you see in the middle, not to be concerned about. what we're watching is all of the activity on the eastern shore. we'll bring this back. the flood watch is in effect. when this starts coming down, definitely starts to bring a bit of a purch. the watch is -- a punch. the watch is in effect for cecil, queen anne's, talbot, and caroline. and again, this is something

victims are furious. >> you don't allow someone who has murdered, you know, premeditated murder of 270 innocent people and let them walk away from their prison term. sorry. >> reporter: kathleen flynn lost her son as the plane blew up just before christmas, 1988. the suitcase bomb killed everyone on board, including 189 americans. >> reporter: the bombing remains britain's worst-ever terrorist attack. but many british relatives believe the libyan convict is innocent. and they are happy to hear he may be set free. >> it's a very unfortunate position for me to be in, to make life even harder for those relatives in the united states. and i don't like having to do that. but i am determined to get to the truth. >> reporter: he and others believe there was never enough evidence to convict mcgrahi, who insists he is innocent. the justice will make the final call next week. >> his conviction is currently

under a second appeal, after a review by the scottish case review commission in 2007. a public wake is under way at this hour for eunice kennedy shriver. services are being held at the white and gray clap board church where shriver regularly attended services. thousands are expected to attend the public wake. the kennedys and shriver's family attended a private service earlier today. mike hellgren is in the newsroom with more on what police are saying about the death of constantine dino frank. >> the 54-year-old was found bound by zip ties inside his vending machine business in canton last month. doctors took him off life support two days ago. frank owns several pool halls and shopping centers. including the top hat cue club in parkville. the manager notified police on july 29th, from a person who

said, you'd better get down here, your boss isn't doing very well. he was referring to the business there inside canton. police found him tbownd and -- bound and he suffered a stroke. >> an autopsy will determine how frank died and whether his death should be considered a homicide. under a plea agreement, ocean city resident, 65-year- old joel schwartz admitted to conspiracy to commit bank fraud. police say schwartz and his wife esther, now deceased, used credit accounts of joel's deceased parents to get unauthorized credit lines from the banks. he then defaulted on $75,000 in loans. he faces a maximum of a year in prison and a million dollar fine. actually, sally, they're not too bad. only two accidents at this time to report. one is going to be in pikesville.

guitar legend les paul died from complications today. he had been in and out of the hospital for about two months, battling a number of illnesses. he also pioneered multitrack recordings, which allows artists to record different instruments at different times and blend the tracks in the end. hundreds of forced to evacuate their homes as wildfires ravaged northern california. the blaze quickly spread to 1 1/2 square miles.

a big named college basketball coach. that same woman is accused of trying to extort millions from the university of louisville head coach. >> i love the game, love my players, loved this university as well as the community. >> reporter: a sex scandal and claims of a paid abortion. head coach rick patino is one of the top coaches in college basketball. he's also a devout catholic in a heavily catholic town. those allegations threaten his job and his reputation. last month, karen stein ford told police that patino raped her at this restaurant. a month later, she reportedly told patino she was pregnant and wanted an abortion. he gave her money. she says it was for the abortion.

but patino is charging her with trying to extort $10 million from her. wednesday, he admitted to having consensual sex with her and for that, he apologized to his family. >> i let them down with my in indiscretion 14 years ago. and i tell them that every day. >> reporter: siford's son says pitino apologized. he offered to buy them a house and a car. in march, pitino reportedly went to the fbi. afterwards, siford was charged with extortion. she has pled not guilty. meanwhile, pitino's contract includes a morality cause, which heens -- means he could still lose his job. >> so as long as they'll still have me, i'm going to coach here. >> he has been coaching for 23 years and has been with louisville since 2001. pos movement on wall street today.

shrugging off retail sales. the dow ends up 37 points. s&p is up 7. and the nasdaq jumped 11. alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. more americans than expected filed for unemployment benefits last week. it's another sign that the job market is lagging the rest of the economy when it comes to recovery. with unemployment high, foreclosures are up, one in every 355 homes, received a foreclosure notice last month. up 32% from a year ago. worries about job security has consumers holding on tight to their wallet. retail sales unexpectedly fell 1 tenth of a percent in july. one place, where a business is improving, the car dealership. the cash 4 clunkers program helped push sales up almost 2 1/2% in july. the biggest gain in six months. ford says the april -- program has been so successful, it's building more cars.

well, depends on, is the cup half full or what? >> yeah. you know, we have a lost clouds out there. a lot of moisture. a lot of humidity. and we have a watch in effect. a flash flood watch in effect because of all of it. right now, though, there's not a lot playing out. i want to show you first warning live doppler radar and give you an idea of what's going around. can see there are showers popping up across the city. just around, say, from baltimore over toward essex. move on up to the northeast. there are some showers just south of chase, move on up again toward, say, okaying ton and up near abingdon. and you can see there are some showers but they are widely scat ared showers. most of the state not seeing much in the way of showers.

as a result, we are looking at the potential for some thundershowers moving on through. and that is creating a flash flood watch in effect for much of the area until this evening is really done. all of the showers we're really predicting are happening now during the heat of the day. you'll start to die out as this energy starts to lose. and we'll see say again from queen anne's down to talbot. and kent county. that is again through this evening. as we start to see the sunlight, we'll start to lose the watches. we'll keep an eye on that for you as we get into the evening. 81 now, our temperature, bwi market. humidity at 66%. dew points at 69. east winds at 9 miles per hour. barometer now at 30.06 and falling. across the state, we have 77 in oakland. we have 83 in ocean city. 78 in elkton. and with the temperatures staying right around 87, we are below our average. but that humidity and dew point, pretty high. average is 86 degrees. that flow from the east is

still bringing in moisture off the bay. and the northerly component. we've had a northeast wind earlier. that's helping to keep our temperatures down a little bit. but the visible satellite, shows a lot of cloud cover there. sun is peeking through when it can. sun peeking through starts to heat things up. and that triggers thunderstorms. but this front is going to eventually move out of here. with that, we see dryer weather moving through the weekend. sunday looks like a pretty good day. and until then, we start to see improvement as this front continues. this continues to move offshore. high pressure moves in. humidity levels stay pretty consistent. warm temperatures taken into the 90s. east wind on the bay tomorrow. 5 to 10 knots. we're seeing tonight's temperatures down to 67 degrees. a thunderstorm in spots early. then partly cloudy conditions. 85 degrees. if you plan on going down to the redskins-ravens game, kick off. if you're planning on heading to the shore, looks like this.

it is 4:29. 81 degrees. we have partly cloudy skies. hello, everyone. and thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about today. tonight, as the state health department investigates the sixth, h1n1 virus death here in maryland, there is a health warning from doctors about the swine flu and pregnant women. gigi barnett explains, a

pregnant woman is dead. >> reporter: six weeks ago, katie flight came down with flu- like symptoms. she was six months pregnant. so she went to the hospital. she took several flu tests and each time, they came back negative. her husband said the h1n1 flu was never considered. >> not one doctor even threw up like a red flag, saying maybe we should test for it. >> reporter: but flight's symptoms became worse. she developed pneumonia and developed respiratory arrest. doctors put her into a coma and delivered the baby girl. the baby's name is abigail and will never know her mother. because after weeks in the hospital, katie flight died on tuesday from respiratory distress syndrome. a complication of the punz h1n1 -- of the h1n1 virus. >> reporter: baby abigail has a

2-year-old brother jacob. she will stay in the hospital for weeks before going home to a father who is now left to raise both children alone. >> i will continue to be an advocate for this, because no one should go through this ever. we need to be more cautious with this virus. they still don't have all the answers. >> reporter: i'm gigi barnett. wjz eyewitness news. >> katie's husband says doctors would have caught the h1n1 virus if they used a more expensive test. she died without ever seeing her newborn daughter. he died 18 years ago, while fighting in the gulf war. and today, his remains are finally back on u.s. soil. sally has more details on the homecoming. >> reporter: michael spot spiker's plane was shot down on the first night in the gulf war in 1991. just over an hour ago, his remains were returned to his florida home. they landed at jacksonville naval air station at 3:15. the homecoming was set in

motion after spiker's family pressed the defense department to find out what happened to his body. on august 2nd, he recovered enough to make a positive identification. tomorrow, a hearst will drive speaker's body around to separate locations. he'll be buried at jacksonville memorial gardens in a private ceremony. u.s. marines would regain control. the american military is trying to bolster security. ahead of next week's afghan presidential election. drew levinson reports for wjz. at day break. taliban gunmen jumped back in the battle with u.s. they weres. militant fighters spent the night laying low. unwilling to challenge the american military. superior night vision capability. about 400 they weres, working with 100 afghan troops, launched a major offensive wednesday, to wrestle control

>> afghanistan's president has ordered a cease-fire during the upcoming election day. on august 20th, voters will choose between the current president and about three dozen of the candidates. three people remain sick after they're exposed to carbon monoxide. kai is live in the newsroom to explain. vic, fire crews say they inspected a section of the resort town today to make sure all buildings are up to code. this comes after a leak at the americana hotel along the boardwalk earlier this week. investigators discovered the hotel didn't have carbon monoxide detectors, which is required by law in ocean city. three people were support to the -- sent to the hospital for poisoning. the hotels won't reopen. >> this is not the first time an ocean city hotel has had problems with carbon monoxide poisoning. in 2006, a man and his daughter died.

a maryland judge admits he deflated a woman's tire because she parked in his assigned spot. now, the woman is speaking out, saying she never got any warning before she discovered her flat tire. lindsay mastes has the story from charles county. >> i was really upset. i was almost in tears. >> reporter: jean washington says because of construction, she's been parking long this street for a few weeks. but when she parked there monday. >> one of the security guards said to me. he said, someone from holding called over. and said judge nally flattened your tire. >> reporter: washington has worked at the courthouse, nearly 13 years. she thought the restricted parking signs were meant for visitors. they are not. those who park here have a permit. >> the only warning that i got was that my tire was flattened. >> reporter: judge robert nally has not apologized. and he wouldn't go on camera. but he talked with me before, walking to his vehicle. >> reporter: he said when other cars are parked in his spot, he

left notes, but decided against it this time. he said, quote, notes are not terribly effective. letting air out of tires is. >> and had there been a note, i would not have parked there. >> reporter: washington said she wants the judge held responsible for his actions. >> usually, when someone has disrupted someone else's property, they're usually given a fine. i'd like to know what's going to happen this this case? >> reporter: the la plata police chief says he's still investigating the incident and does not know whether there will be any charges. >> judge robert nally and jean washington both work at the circuit court for charles county. we started the day out with sun and now we may be in for some rain. take a live look outside now, over baltimore. clouds are rolling in. could they bring showers along with it. looks like a little rain off to the right. eyewitness news is here. and bob has the updated numbers. that is rain downtown. take a lock at radar. -- take a look at radar.

that storm is located over the central portion of downtown. from west baltimore toward essex and south of middle river. to the north of dundalk. that's all moving to the south. 10 miles an hour. it's going to rain for a few more minutes. north of cold spring lane. not a drop. also more showers on eastern shore. they'll see light stuff over there. and on the lower eastern shore, wicomico, worcester county. showers. in fact, you folks in the upper eastern shore. caroline, talbot, queen anne's and kept county, still under a flash -- kent county, still around a flash flood watch. so be careful over there. right now, very widely scattered showers. not a lot of rain to talk about. looks like we're going into a dryer trend over the next few days. >> okay, bob. thanks a lot. let's check in on the roads with sharon gibala. i've been checking out the traffic cameras, looking for rain. we definitely found some clouds moving in towards the west side

of the beltway. take a look at baltimore national pike. you can see them there. so far, the roads there are dry. and traffic is moving just fine. we're seeing a problem now on 95. that's going to be 95 northbound approaching the fort mchenry tunnel. we have a disabled vehicle blocking the left lane. an accident, 95 southbound. past 395. that is causing a slight delay. also watch for a wreck in pikesville. another wreck in the city, west north avenue at druid hill avenue. delaywise, 295 northbound. still slow from 100 to the beltway. 95 northbound slow from 395 to the tunnel. then again, 895 to the top side of the beltway. there's a look at your drive times and the speeds from the top side of the beltway as well as 95. slowest spot at this point is still with the west side of the beltway, between 95 and 795. 15 minutes there. there's a live look at the west side, at willin -- wilkins avenue. everything looking pretty good there. this traffic report is brought to you by the maryland department of agriculture.

new envelope anticipation in a police chase in california that left eight people dead. the officer was chasing a driver suspected of a traffic violation. when the car ran a stop sign and hit a pickup truck. three teenage suspects, as well as five children in the truck were killed. it is described as one of the deadliest wrecks in police chase history. seven suspects are pleading not guilty in at deaths of a florida couple, who adopted 13 children, many with special needs. burt and melanie billings were

shot to death during an armed robbery in their home last month. a brazillian lawmaker and television host is under arrest. accused of ordering killings to boost the ratings of his crime show. >> reporter: police are looking into whether wallace souza and his son ordered at least five of the six killings aired on his show. he aired graphic footage. investigators say he ordered the killings and then alerted tv crews to get to the scene before the police. they say his motive was to boost his show's ratings. souza remains free because of legislative immunity. >> his son is already behind bars on charges of homicide, drug trafficking and illegal drug possession. >> two people are injured in two separate iphones exploding.

his device reportedly made a hissing noise before the screen shattered. another man said he went through a similar incident with an ipod in britain. they say the number is is low, considering the number sold. they also said the number of reports has dropped since apple evidently changed the battery technology. russian warships are on the hunt for a missing cargo ship that may have been hijacked. the vessel hasn't been seen or heard from since late last month. the arctic sea. a 4,000-ton, 320-foot ship, has simply vanished. she left on july 23rd, carrying a load of timber and 15 russian crewmembers. the mystery begins the next day. the crew told officials in sweden, they were stopped and boarded by arm men, dressed as narcotics police and then released. swedish authorities say none of their forces went near the ship.

the last confirmed sighting was in the english channel, one of the busiest waterways of the world. increasingly, there are allegations of piracy. >> it's not under the command of its master. it's not been heard of. communications have stopped. so therefore, all of the jigsaw puzz teleleads toward the vessel unauthorized and taken. >> reporter: the russian navy has now been ordered into the atlantic to search for the arctic sea, with no record of a distress call, it's hard to know where to begin. maritime experts say the ship may now be off the coast of africa. sailing with a new paint job and a new name. sheila mcvickers, cbs news, london. >> the missing ship was reportedly carrying timber. a new lawsuit is heard in court today. involving a former playmate. a judge ruled a jury can decide

bit. we see the winds picking up a little bit outside. >> we had a little sprinky here in tv hill. -- sprinkle here in tv hill. a few very widely pop-up showers. this will be ground clutter. we have one shower right over the southwest portion of the city. now, headed down to the south and southwest. a weaker shower just moving through the downtown area. a little batch here. very light near cecil ton and irville. and salisbury now, a thundershower right over your neighborhood. and it's heading down to the south as well. very isolated showers. most areas will not see much in the way of rain tonight. but if you do get under one of these showers, briefly, brief downpours are likely. as you can see, now on the eastern shore, we're not really seeing a whole lot of anything to tell you the truth right now. just a few very widely scattered showers. although there is a flash flood watch in effect for caroline, talbot, queen anne's, and cecil county. and most of delaware and a lot of southern jersey.

although they may drop that earlier, since we're not seeing much in the way of activity. current temperature right now, is about as warm as it has been all day. 81. i told you, it's going to be cooler today. dew point, however, still pretty high. 69 degrees. humidity at 66%. a lot of moisture in the air. we just don't have quite the right triggering mechanism for a lot of heavy, heavy thunderstorms. downpours, yes. but these storms are not growing much. 30.06, the barometer. currently now, it's holding steady. around the state, 79 oakland. 78, some showers. not too far from the elkton area. 86 in washington. around the baltimore metro. upper 70s to low to mid-80s. east winds, primarilyault day long. -- primarily all day long. bringing in plenty of moisture in the atlantic ocean. most of the activity that we saw yesterday has moved off to new england, off to the east/northeast with that low pressure. still pretty good rain in the carolinas. north virginia picked up like four inches of rain yesterday.
