check the well being of their boss. >> police discover constantine frank, facedown in what appeared to be a robbery. >> he was bound with zip ties and duct tape. and there was -- i think the stress of the trauma and incident. he had a stroke. >> reporter: police say frank was unable to see. he was transported here to johns hopkins hospital where he was on life support. frank died here this week. >> if it does become a homicide investigation, it's also commercial robbery. >> reporter: frank owned several baltimore area businesses, include the top hat q club in parkville. north point billiards in dundalk. and a vending machine company out of this warehouse, near canton square. >> we don't know how much money was taken. he had a safe that he kept in his business. and some money was taken from there. so somebody who definitely knew the area, was no forced entry. so someone who was allowed access. >> if it happened over here, it could happen over there. and we're just as vulnerable as

this -- any business. >> wayne lives in a bar across the street. >> we're taking extra precautions. >> reporter: police say surveillance video from the warehouse is missing. city robbery and homgdz -- homicide detectives are now questioning families and employees for potential leads. and i spoke with some of frank's coworkers and family members today who did not want to go on camera. but they do tell me that frank was a wonderful man who was loved by everyone. live in canton, i'm jessica kartalija, wjz eyewitness news. >> jessica, thank you. police say frank has noige criminal -- no criminal history and was well-known in the community. vic live in the newsroom with more on the latest person to succumb to the illness. >> the latest marylander to die of the h1n1 virus was a man from the washington suburbs, who also had underlying medical conditions. on monday, the university of maryland medical center began injecting volunteers with a vaccine doctors hope will

prevent people from getting the virus. and one in eight institutes testing the potential vaccine. doctors hope that it will be ready for widespread use by october. health officials do expect more flu-related deaths in the state of maryland. sally, back to you. >> thanks, vic. over 400 people from the united states have died from the h1n1 virus. the white house is taking the push for health care reform online. supporters have been asked reason for reform. joel brown reports for wjz. despite those efforts, protestors are still speaking their minds. >> reporter: president obama is counting on his supporters to help him take back control of the debate over healthcare reform. they're showing up outside some town hall meetings, trying to counter the vocal critics of the president's plan. >> health insurance hasn't changed. [ inaudible ] >> better than a private sector job can. >> reporter: now, the white house is taking the fight for reform online. a top aide to the president

sent this e-mail to supporters and asked them to forward it on to others. it lists reasons to support the obama administration's agenda. and takes some charges in the reform plan. >> it is important to address misconceptions or misimpressions that have been left out there about the bills. >> reporter: the president will make its case -- his case in person, in two conservative areas in the country. he'll hold a town hall meeting in montana on friday. then another in colorado on saturday. >> reporter: he'll have his work cut out for him. opponents show no sign of backing down. some are being escorted out of town halls. one group in ohio brought a photo of the president, altered to make him look like adolph adolf hitler. lawmakers there confronting are trying their best to keep the dialogue going. >> i'm just telling you, you have to deal with your fear. >> reporter: but the white house knows they'll have to deal with opointents -- opponents' fears if they want

to get back on track. >> are you for or against the president's healthcare bill? wjz would like to know what you think about the plan. e-mail us your thoughts to wjzwebalert@cbs.com. or click on the link at the top of the wjz.com home page. a school band director in howard county is sentenced for molesting a student. robert johnston taught at mount hebron school for 35 years before his arrest in december. he pleaded guilty. and sentenced to nine years in jail, with all but 18 months suspended. investigators looking into the fatal metro crash. backed often the statement made about when they learned about a safety problem. a crash like this was avoided in march, when the train operator used an emergency brake to avoid hitting another train. an ntsb spokesperson said they just learned of the march incident last week. when in fath, they talked about the incident one day after the june 22nd crash, which killed

nine people. the family and attorneys for the baltimore bicyclists killed last week are renewing their pleas for help from the public the entire incident was caught on camera. derek valcourt is live where that accident happened with more on what the video shows. >> reporter: you can see this bike ride here. a memorial to the victim. also, a reminder for cycling safety. the family and police are still hoping that they can have some help, catching the driver who caused this deadly accident. >> 67-year-old charles yates turned to bike riding for exercise after a hip injury. he even took bike safety classes. but when he returned home on august 5th, his wife instimpghtsively knew -- instinctively knew something was wrong. >> i kept calling his cell and kept getting voice mail. and i kept getting upset. and i kept walking down to see him come up the alley. >> reporter: but yates never

came home. he was run over by a white box truck. the entire smept was caught -- incident was caught on a nearby surveillance camera. the yates family doesn't want the video released. >> the box truck, abruptly without any indication, took a right turn. and mr. yates went under the rear passenger side wheel of the vehicle. it also gives strong indication that the person who was driving the vehicle should have known and probably did know that he hit someone. this is not a minor impact. this is not a bump on the side of the truck. this is a running over of a bicycle and an individual. >> reporter: since the video did not capture the truck's license plate, police still have no leads in the case. if the driver doesn't realize he ran over the cyclist, you know, that's something that has to be determined by the investigators, as well as the state's attorney's office.

>> it's happened. my whole world is shattered. >> reporter: baltimore city police say they are also not going to be releasing an image of the truck. they are looking for in connection with this deadly accident. we're live on maryland avenue, derek valcourt, eyewitness news. >> derek, thank you. anyone with information on the accident is urged to call metro city police. or you can send an anonymous text message to crimes. it's sunny. but not all of the baltimore area is clear. here's a live look outside. it's raining in some areas as we speak. bob turk is standing by with a look at the first warning radar. meteorologist bob turk has more. take a look at radar. not a whole lot to talk about. very widely scattered. most it over new jersey. even that is dying out. but closer to the region, let's go to southwest of baltimore. a little shower and thunderstorm activity.

from catonsville down to arbutus. what's -- it's heading down to columbia. a little leftover rain around glen burnie. another weak shower around cecil ton. and heavier showers around salisbury, right on route 50 there, just to the west of berlin. around the baltimore region, except for that one shower, south of town, not much going on. looks like most areas will probably stay dry tonight. although if you're heading out, yeah. you might want to take an umbrella. these things can pop up very, very quickly. but right now, all of the activity south and west of us. we have been talking about a depression in the atlantic. and the good news is, this is the last advisory they've issued on this thing. and it's beginning to completely decay. and the last report we'll have is from tim williams. >> as you mentioned, it is the last update. the national hurricane center, alerting us now that they are going to cease announcing what is going on with this depression that will start to become ana. if it had continued to strengthen. it is encountering wind shear.

very strong, upper level winds tearing it apart. it's running into dryer air. and it's dying out. winds dow at last report were below 30 miles per hour. and going down. the gusts definitely not becoming an issue. movement still coming to the west. and it was thought that maybe it could materialize on the east coast. maybe even as far over as the gulf. but it is not to be. as of this look here. there is no activity there that is really prominent right now. there are several waves coming in off the coast of africa. none of them really developing. this is a last look at what was thought to be ana. now has simply just died out. tropical depression number 2 is in the record books. we'll continue to keep you posted on the tropics as we develop into this late season now. coming up in your first warning forecast. kai? >> thank you, tim. it's back to the grid iron. toanltses, the baltimore ravens kick -- tonight, the baltimore ravens kick off. sports director mark viviano is live at m&t stadium. >> reporter: a little pregame

what should have been a happy time for one pregnant woman ends in tragedy as katie

flight contracts the h1n1 virus. she died while giving birth to her child. >> reporter: six weeks ago, 27- year-old am katie flight came down with flu-like symptoms. she was 6 months pregnant. so flight went to the hospital. and her obgyn. she took several food tests. and each time, they came back negative. katie's husband, kenny flight, said the h1n1 flu was never considered. >> not one doctor even threw up a red flag saying we should test for it. >> reporter: but flight developed pneumonia and went into respiratory arrest. doctors put her in a drug- induced coma and delivered a girl. after weeks in the hospital, katie flight died on tuesday. from respiratory distress syndrome. a complication of the h1n1 virus. >> and her spirit has been lifting. slowly to give us time to grieve. and there's no tears where she's at.

>> reporter: baby abdpail has a 2-year-old brother, jacob. she will stay in the hospital for weeks before going home to a father, who is now left to raise both children alone. >> i will continue to be an advocate for this. because no one should go through this. ever. we need to be more cautious with this virus. they still don't have all of the answers. >> reporter: i'm gigi barnett. wjz eyewitness news. >> doctors say that since katie was in a coma during the birth of her daughter, she never knew is that she had given birth. if you're waiting for someone to get home from work, let's check on the roads with sharon gibala. well, we have some problems on 95. first of all, we had an accident on 95 northbound just at the beltway. the accident now is in the clearing stages. but you can see by the speed sensors there, we still have delays. those delays mostly call for rain right now.

another accident, 95 southbound at 395. that went off to the shoulder with some slight delays as well. watch for a wreck pikesville. reisterstown in nailers. another at druid hill avenue. and another on the city in o'donnell. at south newkirk street. 175 at charter oaks. richie highway. as far as delays go, 95. and 295 northbound, both slow from 100 to 195. 95 northbound slows down. once again between 8 niche and the top side of the beltway. speaking of the -- 895 and the top side of the beltway. 95 is the slowest spot now, with the 38 miles per hour between the beltway and the fort mchenry tunnel. there's a live look at the west side of the beltway. a little sluggish there. and very wet on 95. and a little delayed there at 195. this traffic report is brought to you by subway. try the new subway big chipotle cheesesteak.

all right. perfect place to cool off, right? >> yeah. it's been a little humid. but it has not been hot. it only got to 81 today. however, we've had some showers around. downtown got a little bit of rain. now still raining south of the city. take a look at radar. one cell to the southwest of the city. this cell, moving down to the south southwest at around 15 miles an hour. downtown, though, around capt end yards has just cleared out. and it dropped temperatures nicely. right now, light showers around candyville and golena. very light stuff over there.

a little heavier shower activity. you're moving to the southeast as you can see. a lot of showers in the city. except for the showers south of town. not a whole lot to talk about. looks like it's going to stay dry. things will be dying down shortly. our stuff heading down toward buoy. take a look at temps right now, with 81. elkton dropped to 76. 82 in ocean city. and they've had a lot of rain the last couple of inches in many, many spots. around the baltimore local area. upper 70s and 80s. east winds, pretty much all day. east/northeast winds except temperatures down. but kept the moisture content pretty high. a lot more rain down to the carolinas.

still a lot of rain across southern new england this morning. our trend will be most of this moisture will head offshore. we're just on the northern fringe of it. tonight, you folks on the lower eastern shore might see these moving through. not a lot to talk about. looks like a drying trend comes up. some of this less humid air will move in. stays humid to the south. high pressure moves in. it will start to warm up. maybe back up to 90 by the weekend. but it should be primarily dry. not really low humidity. but temperature-wise, it's going to be near 90. and the chances right now will be rather slim this weekend. east winds, 5 to 10 knots. bay temp, nice and warm. 83. tonight, widely scattered showers. these are really showers that are coming down. upper 60s tomorrow, to mid-80s. maybe a widely scattered shower in the afternoon. 85 degrees. so looks like we're going

it's 5:29. 81 degrees with showers in the region. good evening. thank you for staying with eyewitness news. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. a young woman is murdered. suzanne collins reports, decades later, police are desperate to learn her name. it could have been the late 80s when the young woman depicted in this sketch was killed. her skeletal remains turned up behind a tire company in westminster in march of this year. >> she is definitely a homicide victim. sometimes with unidentified remains, we can't always tell. but we do know she is, in fact, a victim of blunt force trauma. >> the woman's bones do give some clues to police.

she was beneath construction. >> the homicide detective wants to know more about this area where the body was dumped. 20 years ago, there was a trailer parked here. she wonder fist there was a runaway who may have been parked there. >> what is this does is simulates how far it protrudes off the skull. >> -- she shows with a photo of a skull how she can determine what they looked like. >> how her hair looked in real life. i don't know if she had tattoos on her face. if she had piercings. that kind of stuff, i can't tell off the skull. >> the white female is 18 two 20 years old, about 5'1," with a petite build. both are sure of one thing. a parent might be out there somewhere. and would both rest easier if

they knew how and when their daughter died. >> please go to cbs.com for the a sketch of the victim and a link. a maryland judge says he deflated a woman's tire because she parked in his assigned spot. he said giving the woman a flat tire was more effective than leaving a note. the woman said she didn't know the spot was reserved. two baltimore teens plead guilty of a kidnapping. the teens forced the student to withdraw money from an atm from fells point and held him for eight hours. he received 25 years in prison. several people plead not guilty to murdering a couple inside their home. >> six men and a 16-year-old boy are all charged with first-

degree murder in the deaths of burt and melanie billings. the group allegedly broke into the home and shot the couple. several of the billings' adopted children were sleeping in the home at the time. surveillance cameras captured the men in surveil -- ninja type clothing trying to break into the house. investigators say they planned to steal a safe containing cash. >> the six adults could face the death penalty if they're convicted while the teen could face life in prison. the lockerbie bombing. officials are considering setting him free because he is dying of cancer. the news has sparked a debate. >> this man is serving a life sentence for killing hundreds, mostly manners in the pan am flight 103 bombing over

lockerbie, scotland. now he's he's dying of cancer, he might be released from prison. he asked the final -- scottish court to set him free in his final days. americans are furious. >> you don't allow someone who has murdered. you know, premeditated murder of 271 people walk away from their prison term. sorry. >> reporter: cath lean lost her son as the plane blew up from london to new york just before system, 1988. the suitcase bomb killed everyone on board, including 189 americans. >> reporter: the bombing remains britain's worst ever terrorist attack. but many british relatives believe that the libyan convict is the wrong one. >> it is hard for me, making it harder for the relatives of the victim negligence the united states. but i have to get down to the

truth. >> reporter: they believe there is not enough evidence to yict mcgrahi. they will make the final call next week. the conviction is currently under review. right now, thousands are treming into a massachusetts church, to pay their respects to eunice kennedy shriver. those who enter are being greeted by one of shrivery's 19 grandchildren. the founder of the special olympics. she gained worldwide acclaim. up until recently, she lived in montgomery county. shriver's family has planned a private funeral for tomorrow. vice president joe biden says he will tend to pay his respects. if you drink alcohol, here's a question for you. what's your alcohol iq?

i've had a few showers. now moved down to a.a. county, south of the airport to head toward buoy and crofton. away from our city. and heading down to the d.c. suburbs. tim williams. there you are, in fact right now. went down to around 4:00, 4:30. now heading down 295. bwi parkway. west of severna park. and they're beginning to die out. that's the good news. tim williams has a look at your friday forecast. doesn't look all that bad now. we have warm air moving

into the region again. we're looking at temperatures down in the ocean, in the mid- 80s. take a look. 85 on friday. 86 and 86 for saturday and sunday. help garden variety afternoon. still have showers very close by. but they're not going to wash out any of your plants. water temperatures now in the mid-70s. boardwalk hotel group, bringing your ocean city forecast. temperatures around 70. we'll see a good bit of sun. and then the humidity levels rise. temperatures again in the mid- 80s. and those showers tomorrow, very widely scattered. probably like what we saw today. over the weekend. pop-up shower possible. 85. and it does warm up. 89 and 88. 89 and 89. close to 90. many spots may get close to 90. but the drying trend should continue. it's going to continue. a police chase in detroit ends in a fiery collision. take a look. they were pursuing this stolen

truck when it was stuck by a mining -- minivan. it exploded when it hit a utility pole. the minivan's driver sustained minor injuries. a fast-moving wildfire in northern california has residents on the run. teri okita reports for wjz, that hundreds have already fled the area. and thousands more are under a voluntary evacuation. residents say it was pandemonium wednesday night, trying to escape the inferno that erupted in the canyons of the santa cruz mountains. >> the wife woke me up and said, fire, we gotta get out of here. >> reporter: a fast-moving wildfire is threatening homes and structures in this steep forest area, about 800 miles north of the coastal town of santa cruz. it's fueled by a combination of dry brush and strong winds. >> it did burn over 2,000 acres in about a 12-hour time period, which is significant for the santa cruz mountain areas. >> reporter: fire officials used reverse 911 calls to alert
