michael phelps in an act. tonight the olympic champion is involved in a car crash in east baltimore. we have complete coverage of this late breaking story. hello, i'm vic carter. we begin with breaking news. a car crash less than two hours ago involving baltimore olympic champion michael phelps, and eyewitness news was first on the scene. it happened near downtown in east baltimore. kelly mcpherson joins us from the scene. >> reporter: vic, you can see michael phelps black escalade on that tow truck. what happened was he was driving in this direction, down bittle street when he smashed

into a smaller car going north. did he not go to the hospital, but wjz is the only news team to have pictures of michael phelps being interviewed by police. you can see him right there giving his statement right after the accident. the other driver, a female, was taken to the hospital just as a precaution. phelps had two passengers with him, and they were not taken to the hospital. at this point, they are not saying would was at fault. >> at this point we don't know, kelly. we know there was a collision. two cars were driving, they collide heat. we're going to find out if alcohol was a fact to we're going to look at red lights. aiu is literally talking to them as we speak. >> reporter: phelps has been released, and they have ruled out alcohol as a factor. i also asked the spokesperson if this was any more heightened because michael therapies was involved, and he said obviously, yes this is going to

hit national media because michael phelps is such a big start. they have their best investigators here who will piece this together and try to figure out what happened. kelly mcpherson, wjz. >> kelly, thank you. we will continue to stay on top of this story. for updates, wjz is always on. log on to our website at wjz.com. there is outrage tonight in the wake of a brutal attack in canton. weeks after being bound and gagged in his own business, a man dies in the hospital. tonight jessica kartalija has more on the unfolding case. >> reporter: a phone call around 8:00 on july 29th led baltimore city police to this canton warehouse. >> the family member received an anonymous call to check the well being of their boss. >> reporter: police discover constantine facedown in what appeared to be a robbery. >> he was bound with zip ties and duct tape and was alive but i think the stress and trauma

of the incident, he had a stroke. >> reporter: police say frank was unable to speak. he was transported here to johns hopkins hospital where he was on life support. he died this week. >> it does become a homicide investigation. it's also commercial robbery. >> reporter: frank owned several baltimore area businesses including north point billiards in dundalk, and a vending machine company out of this warehouse. >> we don't know how much money was taken. he had a safe that he kept in his business, and some money was taken from there. somebody who definitely knew the area. it was no forced entry, so someone who was a lot of access. >> if the happened over here, it could happen over there, and we're just as vulnerable as any business. >> reporter: this man owns the bar across the street. >> canton isn't a friendly, safe neighborhood any more, so we're taking extra precautions.

philadelphia eagles. the star quarterback has also broken his silence about his roam in an illegal dog fighting ring. in an exclusive interview with "60 minutes," vic tells james brown that he accepts full responsibility for his actions. >> it was wrong, j.b., and, you know, i feel tremendous hurt behind what happened, and i should have took the initiative to stop it all, and i didn't. i didn't step up. i wasn't a leader. >> vic also spoke about his time in prison and admitted he cried at night in his cell. you can see the full interview on "60 minutes" this sunday at 7:00. the excitement of nfl football returned to baltimore tonight. the ravens opened up there' preseason schedule. kai jackson joins us live from federal hill with the fans reaction as the rival redskins came to town. >> reporter: that's right, the lights in the distance behind us, that's the stadium still in

operation. the baltimore ravens regular season begins in earnest one month from tonight, but fans aren't waiting that long to get fired up. the purple. the passion. the players. fans flute' hands together and their hopes on the field as the baltimore ravens opened the 2009 season with a preseason game against in-state rival the washington redskins. >> reporter: who is your favorite player? >> flacco. flacco. i like number 995, flacco. >> reporter: how many games have you been to? >> this is my first. >> reporter: i'm guessing it won't be your last. >> definitely not. i'm excited. >> reporter: if you talk to coaches, even players, they will tell you preseason games don't it matter, but the fans disagree. >> it's too close together for it not to count. if nothing else, bragging rights. >> reporter: tailgating and trash talking were on the menu

it is 74 degrees with scattered clouds in central maryland. the complete first warning forecast is coming up. there is outrage over the possible release of the man convicted of the lockerbie bombing. british media reports say that he has terminal cancer and will return home to libya. in 1988 a suitcase bomb exploded aboard a pan am flight killing 278 people, many of them americans. >> don't allow someone who has murdered, premeditated murder of 270 innocent people and let them walk away from their prison term. sorry. >> the scottish government says no decision has been made in

vaccinations when they become available. decades ago a young woman is murdered and her body dumped in west minister. a detectives tell suzanne collins police are now desperate to learn her name. >> reporter: it could have been the late '80s when the young woman depicted in this sketch was killed. her skeletal remains turned up behind a tire company in westminster in march of this year. >> she is definitely a homicide victim. sometimes with unidentified remains we can't always tell, or the medical examiner's office can't always tell. we do know that she is in fact a victim of blunt force trauma. >> reporter: woman's bones do give some clues. she was beneath construction debris, and that type of dumping stopped about 20 years tack. deep ravine is located behind the good year retread plant. 20 years ago there are land records that there was a trailer park here. she wonders if there was a young woman there who may have

maryland spca. they eachad had 30 seconds to strut their stuff. three people will be selected to come on down to hollywood and appear on "the price is right." bob. >> great show, lot of fun. watch it every day. i love drew carey. and bob barker. terrific show. looks like a pretty decent weekend. take a look at temperatures around the region, my friends. 74, 70 dew point. it's a little humid, 87%. barometer 30.14 inches. it's been on the rise as high pressure is going to start building into the region. 80 in ocean city. they did have some rain earlier. now it's just partly cloudy and muggy. 66 the cool spot. out in deep creek lake, it not bad at all. probably won't get over about 80 the next four or five day, while most of the state will be in the mid to even upper 80s and low 90s beginning this weekend.

71 bel air, 74 kent island. annapolis at 76. winds have been pretty much out of the east-northeast direction all day long. that kept temperatures from getting too hot. most of the showers were very widely scattered. had a few over northeast maryland. a couple moved through the city around 4:30, down toward d.c. they've all dissipated. can't find anything at this particular time. there was even a flash flood watch in effect but they canceled that earlier tonight because nothing happened on the eastern shore. but yesterday there was some heavy rains. they had some flooding in portions of jersey, southeast pennsylvania, portion of delaware saw some very heavy rainfall amounts. take a look at satellite. this morning some showers across wilmington, philadelphia area. the rest of the area clear, but right now some scattered clouds. really nothing strong as far as precip goes. extreme southern bay, just a few sprinkles down there. along the east coast we've had the stalled frontal system.

out to the west high pressure is building. looks like it's going to be strong enough to push most of that moisture away from our region. lots of showers and thunderstorms in tropical florida, but from maryland north and west, a lot of clear skies, at least clear to partly cloudy, not much in the way of precip. it should probably stay that way i think all weekend long. so that's good news. the front gets pushed a little further south. it will get warmer as the high moves off. our winds come back to the west- southwest. still rather moist. it won't be extreme but we could get to 90 a couple of days this weekend. bay temperature around 993 degrees. tonight then, just some scattered clouds and patchy fog where we saw some rain earlier. tomorrow mid-80s, part sunny, a stray shower or thundershower, really isolated is possible in the afternoon, and the next five days, close to 90 saturday, sunday, monday, and tuesday. let's call it sunny to partly sunny.

it could be much more fun tonight talking about the ravens than the orioles. >> it was the first dress rehearsal and the ravens appeared to be dressed for success. a solid performance in the preseason opener as the ravens roll over the redskins downtown tonight. an unknown rookie a year ago, quarterback joe flacco is a fan favorite now, and he came out throwing on the opening drive. a short toss to running back ray rice. he will go 34 yards on the pass play. that would lead to a field goal

on the ravens first possession. defense rattled washington quarterback jason campbell. pressure d by antwan barnes. incomplete pass leads to a redskins punt. the defense would shut them out tonight. troy smith in as the backup qb, he delivers a 19-yard strike to justin harper for the ravens first touchdown. football in august feels good for baltimore. 23-990 over the skins. >> i thought we were physical, protected the football, defense obviously played very well. young offensive linemen did a nice job. >> the guys did a tremendous job up front making certain calls. the rest of the defense is a tremendous defense. they did some things that shook us up and rattled us, but we stayed the course and those guys made crucial catches. >> michael orr suffered a cut to his forehead when he lost his helmet. he had had that cut stitched up, and he returned to the game. the rains will take on the jets in the next preseason game

august 24th. the big news in football, the signing of quarterback michael vick by the philadelphia eagles. vic's agent confirmed a two- year deal tonight. the former atlanta falcon served 18 months in prison for running an illegal dog fighting ring. he can practice with the eagles immediately and play in two preseason games but is suspended from regular season play until at least week six in october. the golf world turns its attention to minnesota, the pga championship. tiger woods opens up with the lead. bogey-free shooting five under par 67. woods owns a one-shot lead over padraig harrington. that's vijay singh with the shot of the day around the tree, and almost into the 16th hole. he sets himself up for a birdie. round two in minnesota tomorrow. the orioles back in action at home tomorrow night with the los angeles angels in town.

a bear in california had had a leisure backyard adventure. he climbed over a fence and lounged in the swimming pool for a bit. he also grabbed some snacks from a couple of garbage conditions along the way. authorities put his escapade to an end by chasing him back into the woods with loud horns and

rubber bullets. a couple of fishermen off the coast of portugal hauled in a blue marlin weighing 463 pounds. they reeled him in standing up, which requires some skill and an bill he tee. so far they've not decided what they're going to do with their bon tee. and we'll be right back.
