the worst just north of santa cruz has forced more than 2,000 residents to evacuate their home. at least two structures have been damaged. the lockheed fire has already scorched 3,000 acres and is growing. kpix reports. >> reporter: all day long firefighters have been waiting, waiting for the fire to burn down the rugged terrain and come to them. well, here it is. do you think you'll be able to save this house? >> we'll give it our best shot. that's all we can do. >> reporter: for most of the day, the only safe way to fight the flames was from the air. >> we have a steep hillside here. there's no way we could get up there and fight the fire. >> we're helping another community out. other residents, this is their home, this is their neighborhood. just like if it was my home, we come out here and do the best we can with what we have. >> reporter: the strategy now is to remove debris and combustibles from around the home so that, if the fire comes this far, there's less to burn.

wet everything down, and there's a chance the house will make it. break, toss, spray. at this point, it's all about defense. >> we've really given it a good chance. we have the fire engines here with the hose, so we'll do the best we can. >> reporter: but no guarantees? >> there's no guarantees. >> reporter: for stephan walters, life in the mountains is about responsibility. he evacuated his wife and four cats, and now he's come back to save a home that he's just renting. with you out here with this fire, are you brave, crazy, or stupid? >> i think a little bit of all. it's stupid if i put my life on the line. believe me, if the fire comes anywhere and it's rolling more than three feet high, i'm gone. >> reporter: as stephan says, it's not about bravery, it's about doing the right thing. firefighters tell us fire is creeping along the ground slowly, making it much easier to fight. that is relatively speaking, good news. i'm ket do for cbs news.

for michael vick, the city of brotherly love is also the city of redemption. the former star quarterback who was convicted of running a dogfighting operation has signed a two-year deal to play with the philadelphia eagles. vick serve the 18 months in federal prison and was suspended indefinitely by the nfl. in an interview to air sunday on "60 minutes," vick told james brown he accepted responsibility for his actions. >> it was wrong, j.b., and, you know, i feel -- you know, i feel tremendous hurt about what happened. i should have took the initiative to stop it all, and i didn't. i didn't step up. i wasn't a leader. >> so for the cynics who will say, you know what, i don't know. michael vick might be more concerned about the fact that his career was hurt than dogs were hurt. >> i don't -- i mean, football don't even matter. >> you can see vick's entire

interview this sunday on "60 minutes." it's reported this morning that former senator john edwards will admit he's the father of his mistress' daughter. last year he admitted to the affair with a campaign photographer but denied fathering her child. a federal grand jury is investigating whether campaign funds were illegally paid to rielle hunter to keep her quiet. raleigh station wral heard edwards' admission of paternity could come before the end of the investigation. stunning news concerning last week's midair collision over new york's hudson river. the air traffic controller in charge of the small plane was on the phone at the time. he's been suspended along with his supervisor. susan roberts is in washington and has details. susan, good morning. >> reporter: pri ya, good morning to you. the faa says the actual employee's actions did not appear to contribute to the accident itself. still their attention to the job at hand is what is at stake.

two air traffic employees have been suspended in connection with last week's deadly crash over new york's hudson river. >> i saw the last of it, and i saw something explode and then something fall after that. so i would hurry. >> reporter: nine people died saturday when a small plane collided with a tour helicopter. the faa now says the air traffic controller handling the plane was having "inappropriate conversations on the phone" at the time of the accident. he has been placed on administrative leave with pay. also suspend, a supervisor who was required to be in the building but had left np 'a statement, the faa said, "while we have no reason to believe at this time that these actions contributed to the accident, this kind of conduct is unacceptable." the faa has already begun disciplinary proceedings against the individuals, but the national air traffic controllers association says the agency should conduct a full investigation before taking any additional action. according to a senior faa official, just before the crash, the employee who was on the

phone handed off control to another airport, newark liberty international. he had also reportedly told the pilot about the transfer. but investigators claim the pilot never contacted newark. >> newark never had a transmission from the accident pilot. we need to understand what's happening during that time sequence. >> reporter: piecing together those last few minutes could be critical in determining whether anyone could have prevented the tragic accident and if any lives could have been saved. the ntsb learned of the phone conversations earlier this week. air traffic controllers are expected to be alert at all times while on duty and typically are given about a 15-minute break roughly every two hours for that reason. priya? >> susan roberts in washington, thanks. on the "cbs money watch," mixed results for asian stocks this morning. claire leka is here in new york with more. >> good morning to you. asian markets did close out the week mostly higher in the end overnight.

japan's benchmark nikkei rose .75%. hong kong stocks packed on a fraction. on wall street, optimism about the fed's outlook for the economy overshadowed disappointing news on retail sales. the dow jones industrial average starts the day up 36 points. the tech heavy nasdaq added nearly 11. this morning investors will be poring over reports on consumer sentiment, industrial brux, and consumer prices. july consumer prices are expected to come in unchanged as inflation remains under wraps. it turns out video games aren't recession proof. according to mdp group, sales fell for the fifth straight month, skidding 26% in july. a number of sales faced bishopers still battling a tough economy. hardware like the playstation 3, xbox 360, and the nintendo wii fared even worse, falling 23%.

air travel will get more personal as we now have to provide our birth date and our gender to book a flight. it's the tsa's new program called secure flight. for many passengers already taking off their shoes, unpacking their laptops, and putting their toiletries in little plastic bags, this latest security requirement is no big deal. the demand for birth dates and gender information is part of a shift that now has the government and not airlines in charge of checking passenger names against the watch list, a key recommendation of the 9/11 commission. and all you can fly for $599. that's the new promotion making a big splash from jet blue. here's how it works. you must buy the special pass between now and august 21st. then you can fly anywhere the airline goes virtually as often as you'd like from september 8th to october 8th, and there are no blackout dates. however, flights must be booked no later than 1:59 a.m. eastern time three days before the
