it happened here at calvert and biddle. you can see a smashed cadillac escalade, the air bags went off. police say the driver of this honda sped through a red light, causing the crash. [ [ sirens ] >> reporter: she was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. phelps were fine, as were two passengers in his ride. back at the scene today, his fans loved that news. >> thank god. he's my man. car crash, that's a real tragedy. >> it's just something that could happen to anybody. a natural car accident. >> reporter: police told wjz they were investigating whether alcohol was involved. they later said it was not. but said they did not given phelps a breathalyzer test. >> it's standard. obviously alcohol was not a significant factor, or that would have been pretty evident. >> reporter: so was the accident handled differently because phelps was involved? >> we knew it's michael phelps. and we knew it was going to get

a lot of public scrutiny and national interest. so we had our best people on it. it&that includes the commissioner. >> reporter: phelps certainly gets a lot of attention, especially after getting a record 14 gold medals. and this year, a photo of phelps, smoking marijuana, led usa swimming to suspend him for three months. >> this is about celebrity. not about treating him the same. >> the car crash was certainly not routine. not with michael phelps behind the wheel. >> reporter: live here again, the skid marks at the scene. michael phelps was taking a bit of a break from swimming for a few days. he'll be back frapraing in the pool next week. once again, this was not his fault. according to police. wjz is always on. you can watch the video of phelps at the crash scene, now at wjz.com. at this hour, howard county

police prisoner is on the loose. after assaulting the deputy and escaping while wearing handcuffs and leg irons. suzanne collins is live with more on the efforts to catch a criminal. suzanne? >> well, kai, police say this sheriff's deputy was choked to the point of unconsciousness. they also reported that the inmate tried to get the officer's gun but wouldn't -- couldn't get it out of the holster. >> bloodhounds were out searching for the scent. a chopper overhead. dozens searched neighborhoods. one with a sniper rifle. police say 20-year-old devin champagne escaped around midnight. and attempted to kill the deputy sheriff who was transporting him from the court to the jail in jessop. >> we believe the suspect got the handcuffs, pulled them out from under his legs, got behind the deputy, placed them under the deputy's neck and pulled back. and the deputy tried to fight him. >> reporter: after assaulting

the deputy, police believe sham wayne pain -- champagne got out in shackles and handtouchs. -- handcuffs. he was convicted around 11:00 p.m. thursday. when he got close to the gate, the inmate attacked. the manhunt lasted for hours. >> it's almost 90 degrees out. we believe with the shackles and handcuffs, his mobility is limited. if he hasn't been picked up by someone, we believe he is still in the area. >> reporter: his family lives about a mile from the detention center. they called police sosay the wanted man dropped in at theirous house and left -- their house again. neighbors say no alarm sounded, which is normal when there is an escape. >> no. i would have much rather heard the siren and known something was going on, rather than guessing. >> i've got some hammers and screwdrivers. and anything that comes through

the door that's not advisory authorize -- not authorized, you know, well, he's got to settle this. >> the victim was 62-year-old donald chase. he was taken to the hospital and treated for lacerations to his neck. his boss says it appears he was following all the protocol. >> the sheriff's office plans to review its policy, like the one that allows inmates to be transported locally with just one officer. the man accused of selling a gun to former ravens steve mcnair. >> adrian gillam is being accused of selling a loaded pistol to mcnair's girlfriend for $100, just two days before he was killed. 20-year-old sahel kazemi shot mcnair before turning the gun on himself. >> he had just played last year.

michael vick is back in the nfl. the former star quarterback who served time for running a dog- fighting ring, has signed with the philadelphia eagles. hari sreenivasan explains for wjz, when you can expect to see him back on the field. >> reporter: michael vick is getting a second chance in the nfl. >> i've made some mistakes, done some terrible things. made a horrible mistake. and now i want to be part of the solution and not the problem. >> reporter: the 29-year-old former atlanta falcons quarterback is attempting a comeback with the eagles. he served a year and a half in federal prison for running a dog fighting ring. vick is now promising to turn his life around and help more animals than he hurt. >> hopefully i can do that and bring awareness to animal cruelty and dog fighting. >> at this time eagles -- the eagles say vick deb -- deserves to be back on the field. >> as long they take the right

steps, they are given the student. again, that's what makes this country such a great thing. >> reporter: don't expect to see vick on opening day. so far, the league has only cleared him in the final two preseason games. >> he did his time now. we just have to move on. >> reporter: but some animal lovers aren't ready to forgive him. >> younger people look up to sports stars. and younger people are going to look up to michael vick and say, it's okay to fight dogs. >> reporter: people for the ethical treatment for animals says it is disappointed with the eagles. but the aspca says it hopes vick will make good on his promises to fight animal cruelty. >> reporter: vick signed a one- year deal for $1.6 million with the eagles. with an option for a second year. michael vick also sat down with "60 minutes" for an extensive interview. you can see it sunday here at 7:00. the metro workers union is

standing behind its decision. last week, they took a picture of a bus driver talking on her cell phone. the driver was placed on leave. but the driver said she used the phone to call the center when her work-issued radio was not working. no rain in sight. it was sunny for miles today. here's a live look at camden yards. how's the forecast looking for today's o's game? bob turk. >> we have pretty nice weather this afternoon. look at radar. nothing around here. but down to our south, there's all kinds of rain going on. down along the virginia coast there. lots of showers and storms norfolk area and down toward carolinas. all the way into georgia. nice and warm temps. if you're heading out to the game tonight. tim williams with a look at the outback.

disappointment with the ravens against the redskins. >> joe flacco stepped into his second season as a raven. and orchestrated an offense, took positive steps down the field on the opening possession. a short pass to ray rice turns into the longest game of the drive. it led to the first of two field goals. the first touchdown came from backup quarterback troy smith. connecting with justin harper for the score. the ravens roll over the redskins, 23-0. and the first dress rehearsal is a successful one. >> physical. protected the football. defense obviously played very well. young, offensive linemen did a good job. the guys did a tremendous job up front. making the calls. the rest of the defense is a tremendous defense. they did some things that shook us up and rattled us up. and those guys made crucial catches down the line. >> the team seemed please with

i'm sneezing. >> runny eyes, and runny nose, and itchy. >> ragweed, unlike other plants. it is not dependent on weather. so in this area, as the days shorten, by mid-august, all of the plants start to pollinate. >> reporter: it's estimated, 20% of the u.s. is allergic to ragweed. more than 30% report that it affect thrs work. >> it agvaisivates -- acivates -- aggravates my asthma. i start to cough. >> reporter: once the pollen starts flying, peak hours will be between 10:00 in the morning and 4:00 in the afternoon. exactly the time most of us are out and about. for those of us who exercise outdoors. >> when you are exercising, you switch from nose to mouth breathing. and now, you're breathing the pollen deep into the lungs. >> i can't put my windows down on my car when i'm driving.

oh, man. it's great summer weather out there right now. and all weekend. looks like it's going to go into next week, pretty much, with not much change. take a look at temps now around the region. a lot of sunshine. just a few passing clouds. 84 here. 83 ocean city. elkton. if you're heading down the beach. hagertown, warmer and 87. cumberland there in the valley. oakland still coming in at 80.

the dew points have dropped. that's good news. more comfortable. at 65. around the baltimore metro. low 80s, pretty much everywhere. as you can see, winds continue to be generally out of the east direction. off the ocean. which keeps the high temperatures away. keeps it kind of moist. temperatures mid-80s, which is just about normal this time of year. there are some weather systems out west. not going to affect us. most of the country here. east of the mississippi valley. has some nice weather. up to the north. showers and storms. off the atlantic coast and the bahamas. an area of disturbance. may get involved with some of this rain developing off florida and in the carolina coast. could be serious rain down here. this could be developing. with this front down to the south, we're kind of spinning around. more showers and storms for the folks. extreme southeast virginia. maybe in acamat county, virginia. south of ocean city. maybe showers there tonight. and again tomorrow. the rest of the state, with the

exception of maybe the lower eastern shore, should generally be rain-free the next 24 to 48 hours. as high pressure moves in, the high moves off the east coast that allows us to come back to the west/southwest, particularly by sunday. and the warmer temps come. that means closer to 90. this past week, temperatures mid- to upper 80s. closer to normal. bay temp, 83. sunrise, 6:20 in the morning. take a look at the forecast. under partly cloudy skies generally. should be rain-free. a little fog in suburban areas. tomorrow, partly to mostly sunny. a stray shower is possible. and a few isolated spots, with the high of 87. normal high is 85 degrees. a nice, warm summer day. >> loving life. still ahead at 5:00. witness intimidation. today, the gunman who killed witness carl lackle is sentenced. how long he'll spend behind bars. spriding the word. president obama brings --

carl lackle is murdered in front of his home before he gets a chance to testify. weijia jiang has more. >> this essentially closes the carl lackle murder case. they said in time, they probably could forgive him. but right now, they can't imagine it. >> carl lackle's mother speaks moments after hearing the sentence for jonathan cornish, the teenager convicted of pulling the trigger. >> i hope in time i can forgive him. and i hope he does do good. and maybe makes something of himself and learns things and gets an education. >> reporter: a federal judge sentenced now 18-year-old cornish to prison as part of a plea agreement. in exchange, they convicted

seven others in the case, all of whom have been sentenced. >> you know, you'll never open the refrigerator again. he'll never walk around the corner. he'll never live a life. he'll just exist. and maybe that's what he deserves. but it's still tragic. >> of course the most notowerious -- notorious. and he said from the bottom of his heart, he was deeply sorry for pulling that trigger. for now, we are live at the federal courthouse in baltimore. weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> thanks, weijia. carl lackle's family is pushing to pass legislation that would jam cell phone signals in prison. a very disturbing case of animal abuse results in the arrests of three men. they are charged with torturing and killing a cat in emmere. -- edgemere.

they say they beat the cat and then put it in a microwave and freezer. the men also reportedly spun the cat on a ceiling fan before putting it in a bag with a rock and tossing it into the river. after deflating the tires of a woman's car, a judge has resigned from one of his duties. judge robert noly, seen here walking away from the camera, is no longer the chief administrator of the circuit court. however, he will remain on the bench. he said he let the air on the tire because notes were not effective against illegal parkers. the la plata police department is continuing its investigation into the tire deflation. in an effort to get millions of marylanders immunized, the state officials want to offer free vaccines. it's part of the plan to make available to every resident who wants it. the first group to get the shots will be pregnant women and people with health problems. president obama is out

west, hoping to ease concerns about his $1 trillion plan to overhaul the healthcare system. manuel gallegus reports on the president's town hall meeting, where he is expected to face some opposition. >> reporter: the salesman in chief is out west, stepping up his pitch for urgent healthcare reform. >> health insurance reform will mean a set of common sense consumer protections for folks with health insurance. president obama is using his own town hall meetings to beat back the fiery opposition boiling over in other town halls across the country. >> fight against the fear. this is not about politics. this is about helping the american people. >> reporter: while montana voted for president obama's rival in the last election, and usually casts a wary eye towards washington, we were hard-pressed to find any ticket holders who didn't support a healthcare overhaul. >> i trust the government far more than i trust private insurance companies. >> tickets for this town hall

>> reporter: they celebrated eunice kennedy shriver's life in song and scripture. her daughter maria told the mourners in cape cod, shriver would also want the day to be a call to service. >> and she would ask each and every one of you to join her in making this world a more tolerant, just, and compassionate place. >> reporter: she founded the special olympics, inspired by the struggles of her sister rosemary, who was institutionalized at age 23. shriver's 19 grandchildren paid tribute. >> thank you for teaching me to love and care for my sisters and brothers the way you did with rosemary. >> reporter: eunice's older brother, john f. kennedy would go on to be president. her only surviving brother, senator ted kennedy is battling brain cancer and couldn't attend the funeral. she was remembered for being a trailblazer and an early feminist, whether she was out fighting for her causes or home with her family. mommy wore men's pants, smoked

look how pretty that looks. great night for baseball activities this weekend. looks like it's going to be very, very nice. tim in the outback with a look at the ocean city forecast. and tomorrow's forecast. tim? >> just a nice weekend to be out and about. the warm temperatures are coming back. humidity levels are still very high. and we're looking at temperatures pretty much just in the mid-60s tomorrow morning. a good bit of sunshine early on. we'll get up into the mid- to upper 90s. and start to get close to 90 by the end of the weekend. look for a stray, isolated potential for shower tomorrow. if you see it, it's going to go by so quickly, you won't even notice it's around. that's going to be the case in ocean city for the next few days. water temperature in the mid70s. just a refreshing weekend to be down on the beach. boardwalk hotel group. loving this forecast. for the next five days, we send it in to bob. nice, warm summer weather. can't complain. 87, 88. 89. 90, 88. some spots will probably get to 90 and 91 during the next five days. so the chances of rain are not that great.

maybe by wednesday afternoon and evening, a pop-up shower is possible. enjoy the weekend. kai? >> bob, thank you. two air traffic controllers are off the job today. drew levinson reports for wjz. officials say they broke the rules. as investigators examine the wreckage from the deadly collision of the hudson river, two air traffic controllers are suspended. one for being on the phone. the other, the supervisor, for being out of the building. the faa says the controller at teeder borough -- teterboro airport warned about another helicopter in the air. then made a personal phone call. soon after he told the pilot the north control. when the plane reached the hudson river. radar showed several aircraft in the area. the faa says the controller who was still on the phone, did not advise the pilot of that. but the newark tower controller

saw the hazards and asked teterboro to instruct the pilot to turn. when teeter teterboro tried, there was no response. six people were on board. it had just taken off from a heliport. here along the hudson river in manhattan. all nine people were killed. in a statement, the national air traffic controllers association said, we support that any such allegation is fully investigated. before there is a rush to judgment. about the behavior of any controller. the controllers will be paid as the faa investigates. >> in new york, drew levinson, wjz eyewitness news. hundreds of mourners gathered today near philadelphia for the funerals for the three men traveling in the airplane. two brothers and one 15-year- old son died in the collision. a dramatic rescue at sea, when a downed pilot is saved by a four-man rowing crew. the ordman had been at sea when they saw the plane fall. rowers got closer and found the

on masn 2. ranks had today to review -- ravens had today to review the game tape. and it was a decisive win. preseason game opener played just across the parking lot. the defense shut out the redskins. and the offense had it going from the start. the passing game, obviously a big part of the game plan, as the ravens put the ball in the air, 54 times. joe flacco with a short toss to ray rice. it ends up a big game. he'll go 34 yards on the pickup. the first two scores for the ravens were field goals. they need to work on finding the end zone. second team offense does score the touchdown. backup quarterback troy smith to justin harper. ravens' offense rolls up 500 yards. 21 first downs. 23-0, the victory. a good start. and the ranks were just glad to be playing another team. after weeks of practicing against themselves. >> after seeing white, black and purple for the last two weeks, you kind of get tired of it.
