stay breaking news tonight, a shooting in the inner harbor. violence breaks out in the popular tourist spot. we are live with details this evening. good evening. that's what people are talking about tonight. police tell us that gunshots rang out about 10 minutes ago at the inner harbor. eyewitness news has a crew on the way to the scene. we'll have that in a moment. but first, let's go to the light street pavilion. this is apparently where the violence broke out not long ago. about 10:00 tonight. at this point,ault we have con- - all we have confirmed from police is that gunshots did

ring out inside the building. and suzanne collins has been gathering information from the police. soats so let's go to suzanne live. what do we know at this hour? >> reporter: well, we know, adam, that it was about 10:15 this evening that shots rang out in the light street pavilion right behind me. we're not clear where in the pavilion. but apparently two people were shot. they believe one was shot in the leg. and the other was shot in the elbow. they tell me that it does appear that these are a younger people. that it may again be one of these situations that we have been talking about before, about young people getting in fights down here. young gangs. young bands of men who have been fighting and causing crime. now, i want to show you some video from back in early june, when the police commissioner toured the inner harbor after a number of violent incidents. and he came down to tell people that the harbor was safe. that they should come here. that it's a wonderful tourist spot. and that came after several

instances in which there had been fights down here. one young man was beaten up. we had another case of a stabbing. here again now, we have a shooting of two people. i will tell you something that police suspect. they believe it's possible that the two victims may, in fact, also be the suspects. perhaps shooting at each other. back to you on tv hill. >> we know this is a fluid situation, suzanne. what is the scene at the inner harbor there right now? i remember when commissioner bealefeld went down there in june. are people down there in the inner harbor tonight? this is typically a busy evening for them. >> very busy. it's packed with people of every age, every generation, probably from all over maryland who are visiting. now, you've got tons of police officers lining the street. when i was hiding -- heading down here from tv hill, there were numerous police cars with sirens, going up and down the jones falls, probably trying to secure witnesses or people who ran from the scene. there are a lot of older people who are talking about their

concerns nearby, who are concerned about being down here in that environment. back to you. >> all right, suzanne collins, live for us in the inner harbor tonight. suzanne is going to continue to update the information. we'll bring it to you in this newscast. and wjz is always on. for instant updates on tonight's shooting. as soon as we get that information, we'll post it on wjz.com. in other news this weekend, after a series of high-profile cases, involving animal abuse in baltimore city, now, baltimore county police say they have three men that have been charged with torturing a cat in edgemere. suzanne collins filed this report in edgemere this morning. >> the hooper family has new pets to help the children get over the death of their kitten, diamond. the 5-week-old cat was killed in a bizarre torture case, while the family was away on vacation. >> it's disgusting. i can't believe it. you know. i don't know what somebody understands to do something like that to an innocent,

innocent thing. >> two others have been charged with animal abuse. andrea hooper said it was so hard to break the news to the children that the cat would not be there to cuddle when they return. >> you could just lay with her. >> police say 25-year-old richard rue is primarily responsible for the abuse. they say the other two didn't step in to stop it. the three were drunk, according to police. >> at one time or other, he put the cat in the freezer, then the dryer, ran the dryer, microwave, twirled the cat around by the tail and then hit the cat. >> reporter: after the cat was tortured in various ways, there was one final act of violence. police say the animal was put in a bag with rocks and tossed into this river. >> reporter: one of the men charged said he tried to get rue to stop. the other said he was fearful because rue had a box cutter. the baltimore county humane site society say -- society says call 911.

>> and be a witness. so that the person is caught, then maybe they can go ahead and go to court and testify. >> reporter: suzanne collins, wjz eyewitness news. >> and suzanne tells us that richard rue is being held on $50,000 bond. the other two defendants have been released on their own recognizance. we also have an update on another case of animal torture. our partners at the baltimore sun are saying that gabrielle is showing signs of healing. police say last week, a group of kids tortured and then burned her body in west baltimore. baltimore city police has launched an anti-animal abuse task force to increase awareness. there is an update on the howard county woman, charged with hoarding 74 cats inside her home. nessy has been sentenced to 74 days in jail for animal cruelty. the 52-year-old columbia woman faced 148 counts of miss treatment of cats after they

were found dead or dying by animal patrol officers in 2006. neighbors complained to county authorities about an odor coming from the town home that the woman shared with her mother. he has served his time for animal cruelty. now, michael vick is back in the nfl. the former nfl star sat down with james brown with an exclusive interview with 60 minutes. he talked about the challenges he's faced on the field, after being away from the game for so long. >> they run just as fast. throw the ball just as far as i did before i left. they had the same quickness. and i know i detached my stuff. and i know how i feel when i'm in tip-top condition. and i train now. i never trained before. >> reporter: you can see the entire interview with michael vick tomorrow night on wjz, "60 minutes "airs at 7:00 p.m. president obama is on the coast trying to convince americans his $20 trillion plan to overhaul the healthcare system is workable and affordable.

tonight, manuel gallegus has more. >> reporter: the president was at it again, trying to defuse skeptics who believe more government involvement in healthcare will only make things worse. >> nobody is going to force you to leave your healthcare plan. if you like your doctor, you keep seeing your doctor. i don't want government bureaucrats meddling in your healthcare. but the point is, i don't want insurance company bureaucrats meddling in your healthcare either. >> reporter: that's the core message president obama is trying to get across to americans. some who came to see him believe it. >> i'm thinking there is a lot of truth it it. >> reporter: others think it is just politics at play. >> i think they stacked it with obama supporters. >> reporter: before a crowd, president obama again went after health insurance providers, accusation -- accusing them of turning their back on the sick when they need help the most. >> we found in the past 12 years, more than 12,000 americans were discriminated against by insurance companies because of a preexisting condition. when we get healthcare reform,

those days will be over. >> reporter: the president says he wants a healthcare reform plan in place by the end of this year. but some just don't believe it can happen. >> reporter: protestors outside the rally don't trust president obama or the government to get it right. >> i don't want the government in charge of my healthcare. even though they say they're not going to be, everything else they've ever done, they've messed up. >> reporter: the president blames his opponent for using scare tactics to create misinformation. and told the cheering crowd what will be scary is if nothing is done soon. manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness news. >> and president obama likens these changes to the changes that led to social security and medicare. looking for ways to lower the state's budget deficit. recommending cutting $250 million in state aid to local governments. those cuts will affect local health, police aid, community colleges and highway user funds. o'malley is scheduled to bring

more than $400 million of cuts to the board of public works. just this month, the board approved about $280 million in spending reductions and fund transfers. a tractor-trailer overturns in baltimore city, after colliding with a van that happened after 9:00 this morning. investigators say that everyone involved was able to escape without serious injury. but two people were transported to an area hospital. the cause of this crash remains under investigation. maryland state police are asking for your help after a highway sign is severely damaged on interstate 70. take a look here. this sign used to hang over the eastbound traffic. police say that a large vehicle likely knocked it from its posting, causing it to dangle, dangerously over the traffic below. if you witness the incident, police are urging you to call the golden ring barracks at the number listed here on your screen. be prepared to answer a few more questions, the next time you travel by air. tonight, jessica kartalija reports, that one airline is now taking steps to improve their screening process.

>> airline passengers are used to taking off their shoes, unpacking their laptop and putting toiletries in plastic bags. >> i think they're doing a good job with security. >> reporter: so another new security measure isn't a big deal. >> i think it could be a little stricter. >> reporter: there are more than a million names on the terror watch list. every day, innocent passengers are questioned about their identity. >> driver's license. they wanted to know if i had my driver's license. and some of the are the questions would be, what's in my bag. >> reporter: now, the tsa says a new program, called secure flight, will eliminate those mistakes. it requires passengers to give additional, personal information when they buy tickets. >> and by the data we ask for, which again is the name, date of birth and gender, secure light will clear 95% of the travelers. >> reporter: u.s. airways is the first major airlines to follow the procedures. other airlines are expected to do the same sometime soon. >> date of birth is kind of

that was about it. you can see 74 degrees with light winds out there. we could see some fog form because of that. but we want to show you real quickly here. we've got two updates. because what is heating up, the tropics. tropical storm ana. this is moving off to the west at 17 miles per hour. and that is just one of our tropical systems now. a little farther out, we also have tropical storm bill. winds up to 40 miles per hour with this one. there's a sign, at least from the national hurricane center, that this is going to strengthen into a hurricane. you can see the general track. i'll have more on that coming up it in a little bit here. baltimore native big nba star has returned to the city. and he is giving back. they held a back-to-school event at the espn zone today. more than 150 children were given backpacks, full of school supplies. he also treated the kids to a lunch and a day. games and other fun activities. still to come.

tonight, an update to the intense wildfires, consuming parts of california. governor arnold schwarzenegger is urging residents to heed their evacuation orders as firefighters continue their battle against these flames. nearly a dozen wildfires are burning in the santa cruz mountains. nearly eight square miles have already been stripped. a major disaster in china. take a look at this flooding. hundreds of people have been evacuated. entire homes and buildings swept away here. roads just collapsing from all of the water. as many as 11 deaths have been blamed on the flooding. it coming -- comes just days after a typhoon killed hundreds and caused at least $50 billion in damage. two robbery suspects are dead. two more hurt. after an elderly store owner opened fire on them in new york city. the 72-year-old owner said that four would-be robbers threatened him with a gun and

began to assault an employee. that is when he was forced to shoot. tonight, he says he's heartbroken about what he says he had to do. >> you can't even imagine what it's like until you have to do something like that. you feel sick. sick to your stomach. it's terrible. >> if it weren't for him, none. us would be here. >> the store owner bought his licensed gun 20 yours ago after another robbery attempt. no charges will be filed against him. new developments tonight in that large-scale jewelry heist in london. some pictures show the thieves. officials show they planned the attempt two days before. but they abandoned their plans. then on august 6th, they walked in armed with handguns and got away with $65 million. we want to update you on the breaking news. a shooting at the inner harbor. let's go to suzanne collins.

she is live the@the scene. -- live at the scene. >> reporter: i'd first like to tell you what the police spokesperson told us. he said that shortly after 10:00, a police officer was approached by someone in the light street pavilion behind us to tell that there was a man at the other end of the pavilion. when the officer went running down, it was too late, because he heard shots fired. two people shot. one of them 20 years old. the other, they believe, is a teenager. he looks younger. that was the report, both nonlife-threatening injuries and taken to the hospital. now, meanwhile, we do have some reaction from some people who were just in that pavilion at the time. >> okay. it was me and my best friend. we were inside the harbor. we were just shopping around. and then we started to walk out, just to go out and get some air. because it was hot and there was a whole bunch of people inside. and we heard two or three gunshots going on. we were coming down the escalade, walking out. what did you think when you heard that? >> i was walking across the

street to catch the bus home. >> reporter: and we also heard from another woman who said she was on the park bench with some of her friends, having a lovely night. and what a terrible shame it was that such a beautiful city in baltimore would have a problem with something like this, at a place everyone loves to come on a saturday night. back to you. >> ongoing problem. police are certainly having their hands full. suzanne, thank you so much. let's check in with meteorologist bernadette woods now for a look at the weather. bernadette? >> weatherwise. beautiful day. changing completely. want to show you, we did top out around 86 for our high. not too far off the average, which is now down to 85 degrees. we started out at 66. and more on the way back down this evening. 74 degrees in baltimore. and the winds are light out there also. since the winds are light, we're going to see some fog form overnight. not a whole lot. overall, pretty quiet night out there. you can see on this picture. isolated thunderstorms formed over the mountains today. that's all we're really finding because it's pretty quiet out there. and it will continue to be

quiet into tomorrow. but the difference is, the high pressure that was building on top of us today will move offshore. as it does, it's going to connect with this really hot air mass over the middle of the country and start pulling it our way. tomorrow, temperatures jumping into the 90s for our highs. then by monday, we see 90s once again. we'll start to feel that humidity really creeping up. and then as we head through the week, we're seeing a couple more days in the 90s. but at that time, this high will start to move off to the east. opening the way for this storm to get closer. more so wednesday into thursday. better chance for some late-day thunderstorms to start developing as that front does get closer. so that's the promise we're going to see during the next few days. overall, though, we start to heat up. in the tropics. this is another area heating up. we have tropical storm ana. the 11:00 update in right now. you can see moving off to the west at 17 miles per hour. the storm hasn't strengthened all that much. and there are signs that it could strengthen. but it will be a slow process if it does, though. the other tropical storm, we started off at the beginning of

the show, also moving to the west at 16 miles an hour. this one also, again, winds of 41 miles per hour. but the difference with this one, it's lagging a little behind. and we think it's going to strengthen more so as we head through the next few days. our waters are much quieter out there tonight. tomorrow, we get up to 91 degrees. now, for the next five days, this is what we've got going on. 90s for the next few days here. coming down just a little bit,a wheeze -- as we see increased chances for showers and thunde
