hurricane, jerry says they found fish all the way up in their third floor balcony. the slow start to this season may just be misleading. because hurricane season always picks up in august headed toward a peek in mid-september. >> this is fun. >> reporter: the patra family purposely booked during hurricane season. >> it's cheaper. >> reporter: and their 3-year- old, slept through claudett. >> reporter: it's not anna? >> isabel. >> you can board up the windows, but it's a huge storm is going through punch through here like nothing. >> reporter: his hotel has been standing since 1963. in panama city, florida, 13 news.

first i'm going to go to claudette because we still have a lot of rain with this one. some of this rain is going to be funneled our way. now we're going to switch over, there are three out there. anna is also a tropical depression. and bill is the biggest of all three. it is a hurricane. at this point it is a category one hurricane. and in the next hour, it could easily become a category two hurricane. with this system, all signs are pointing to this intensifying, not only to a hurricane two but three or higher and that makes it a major hurricane. this is something we are monitoring closely. we'll have an update on this and anna and everything going on with our weather. >> thanks bernadette. >> reporter: remember wjz is always on for the latest track. your updated forecast and our

day. and if things were different at night time. >> reporter: the mayor says there's a much bigger issue. >> i mean they will carry weapons on them. that's why we keep focusing on legislation at the state to get to deal with illegal guns. i tell you, if they caught that guy, he would have been out the next day with a slap on his hand. >> reporter: mayor dixon was talking about bill 170. it would have increased the penalties for gun offender. the general manager of harbor place in the gallery issued a saying saying. quote, retailers and employees remain our top concern. and they will continue to work closely with the city police department and continue to look at their procedures. a search is on for a felon

on the lose. he escaped after police had arrested him. vic carter has the story. >> reporter: the 20-year-old is wanted for the attempted murder of a howard county sheriff deputy. he escaped from the police cruiser. deputy chase was transporting the felon to the conviction center at the time. sally back do you. >> thank you vic. police think champane is still in the area and they're confident they'll find him. 15-year-old kevin johnson and 17-year-old david jefferson were charged for their role.

the mayor dixon showed the you tube video while trying to pass a gun bill last year. today a spokesman for erlick says the former governor is not expecting to make any announcement any time soon. today joel brown reports, president obama promised a group in phoenix, arizona that health care reform will not take any of their benefits. >> reporter: president obama added part of his sales pitch to a speech to veterans in phoenix. >> one thing the reform won't change is veteran health care. >> reporter: the president called for a government run insurance plan fueled more protest. the president sporters held

signs pressing for the so called public option. but democrats fear the white house may abandon that part of the plan to gain republican support. >> the bottom line for this for the president is, what we have to have is choice and competition in the insurance market. >> reporter: the white house says it's willing to consider exchanges, it will be run by states, not the government. some democrats say that's not what the country needs, but some republicans like the idea. >> there's things like nonprofits. i don't know if it can do what people need, but we should look at it. >> reporter: conservative democrats say a government run health care plan would never get through the senate. >> kill the bill, kill the bill. >> reporter: and with no let up in the vocal opposition, the white house could see a health care compromise as the only way

forward. in washington, joel brown, wjz eyewitness news. also today the president vowed to veto any defense spending bill loaded with pork projects. he said congress has been draining the military budget with programs that cost too much money. a rough start to the week on wall street. investors are worried about consumer spending. the dow was down 186 points, the s & p down 24. the nasdaq down 55. here comes another round of heat and humidity. outside right now it's warm. and the clouds aren't doing much to keep our humidity in the comfortable range. bob turk is here to update us. >> the dewpoint has come down the last hour. it actually feels like 89 degrees out. so we're not into the 90s yesterday but maybe tomorrow it may happen. we do have some shower activity

will be buried september 29 which was his birthday. for now, jackson's body has been kept in a freezer at is the system tear. the pilot of a small plane is lucky to be alive as his plane flips over during a landing. the pilot was trying to land at an airport in colorado when it flipped around. a crane has to be brought in to up right it. the pilot wasn't hurt, but his plane was damaged. the cause is being investigated. seems like prince william and cate willington have come to an agreement. >> reporter: he's 27 and so is she. and they've been together more or less for eight years. now it's reported they finally come to, no not an engagement. but an understanding. according to the british tabloid news of the world, the

people around us are around the 90s. in the past hour it dropped from the upper 50s to 62 degrees. so a little bit of a break out there. the over all trend is heating up with higher humidity over the next couple of days here. so situation is this. winds are out of the south. that's what's bringing up the higher humidity. high pressure is keeping that storm at bay for us at least for now. but this high eventually is going to start to give way. as it does, all of the stormy weather you see out here will start creeping in our direction too. by tomorrow, the chance of a thunderstorms in the mountains, but not for the rest of us. it's starting to pick up some of the moisture. so we'll see some of the moisture ride into this front and move our way. but it's not really going to be much more than scattered showers and thunderstorms breaking out on wednesday. and continuing into thursday. a new flow is going to right along the same front. and friday it will bring us more thunderstorms. this front will keep bill away

from the united states mainland. and bill, i mean hurricane bill, it is this one way out here. the strongest of all of our tropical systems. and there are three that we are tracking. bill winds 92 miles per hour. the new update comes up at 5:00. there's very big chances it will be a category two storm when that comes out. all it has to do is get to 96- miles-per-hour to be a category two storm. all signs are showing this is going to be a major hurricane as it makes its way through the atlantic here. that means category three or higher. something we'll be watching here. as i commented on, the front is going to be over us is ultimately starting to make this turn as we head through the latter part of the week here. but also, we do have tropical depression anna back down to a tropical depression. and it is really bringing a lot of rain to puerto rico today. racing at 28-miles-per-hour. that is so quick right there. it is getting ripped apart as

walk. >> reporter: she was allegedly abducted during a walk near her home. >> we have not focused in on any one suspect. >> reporter: more than 100 officers have been combing the georgia mown mountains for the missing mother of one. >> we are going to get the photos in the air as much as possible. that's the only reason i'm here today to try to keep christie's in people's mind. >> reporter: cornwell was on the cell phone when she was abducted. her cell phone was found friday evening about 3.5 miles from where she disappeared. >> we know that it is the victim's telephone. >> reporter: cornwell's disappearance is a blow to a community that is still recovering from the january abduction. who was held three days in the area before being bludgent to death. >> when i learned this woman was snatched, i cried.

i don't even know her. but this is awful. this is awful. >> police are not saying whether cornwell's boy friend is a suspect in the case. and a ruling in the cop killer who is facing death. sally is in the newsroom with more. >> reporter: davis's attorney insists he is innocent. claiming witnesses identified the wrong shooter. today the supreme court says the risk of putting an innocent man to death requires a new hearing. >> thank you sally. the case has attracted world attention.

michael vick is still getting readjusted to life now as an nfl quarterback for the philadelphia eagles. it's a change of pace after spending a year and a half in prison on dog fighting charges. sarah brown reports for wjz. vick says he deserves a second chance. >> reporter: he sported a red practice jersey with his old number, seven. vick threw passes with his new team. vick told 60 minutes, once he was incarcerated his feelings of guilty brought him to tears. >> the first day i walked into prison and they slammed that door, i knew, you know the magnitude of the decisions that i made. >> you understand why people are outraged? >> i understand why. and i'm going to say it again, it sickens me to my stomach. when i was in prison. it was disgusted because of what i let happen to those animals. i could have put a stop to it. i could have walked away from

it. >> reporter: vick's new contract with the eagles could net him $7 million over two years. fans have mixed reactions. >> i think he paid he has debt. i want no problem. he served two years in jail, he deserves a chance. >> nfl is a privilege, and not someone who is charged with murder of animals. >> i understand some people are not going to agree with it. but i think the people who do agree with it outweigh that other group. >> reporter: vick is working with the animal society. saying his actions will speak louder than his words. >> i'll still be involved in the community, because i still, regardless of football will have a voice. i can have an impact on kids. because i've been a living example of what not to do. >> under vick's conditions, vick is only allowed to practice with the eagles and go to team meetings. it could be late october before he could play in the regular

season. it has been a relative quiet tropical storm season up until now claudette came on land. as you can see the winds were briefly strong as well. there is a powerful hurricane beginning to churn it's way through the atlantic. bob turk is tracking it now. >> last friday we had nothing going on. over the weekends we had three named storms. take a look at this is from earlier this afternoon. three storms listed. bill is sa big one. anna is pretty much just a tropical depression. claudette came on shore earlier. bill we'll be watching very carefully for the next couple of days, because bill is already a hurricane. it's going to be bothering cuba, south florida by the end

major wildfires burning in california. the blaze 70 miles north of sacramento threatens thousands of homes. as well as a power plant and transition lines. the fire started after a hawk hit a power line. the fire near santa barbara has a more sinister cause. >> it was a cooking fire from an illegal marijuana operation. >> reporter: in the santa cruz mountains, there was good news for some 2,000 residents, the evacuation for the town of bonny doon was lifted. >> it was going to be part of our house that we were going to build. >> reporter: that loss was made easier by what was saved. the flames reached within 4 feet of her house. before firefighters stopped them. >> to have it come that close, i just have to say those guys are my heros.

88degrees but the dewpoint down to 62. which makes the actual feel temperature, the real feel of temperature of 89 degrees. humidity at 41%. winds are dead calm now but they've been southerly. currently holding steady around the state. the hot spot cumberland. ocean city also the upper 80s to 90 down there. ocean city coming in at 90 degrees. the dewpoint did drop late in the afternoon. so it's a little more comfortable than it was a couple of hours ago, as you probably can feel. winds out of the south, brings us this rather moist very warm air in some spots. tomorrow it'll be into the low 90s. we did have a little batch of clouds that kept the temperatures down. you can see from the ocean area. tomorrow with a little more sun, temperatures get to 90,

91. some spots maybe 92. up to the west, a batch of showers and thundershowers. pretty good shot. these two are west southwest of showers developing. maybe tomorrow night, we'll see one here. the best chance will come here on wednesday as a funnel system approaches from the west northwest with a chance of showers and maybe some thundershowers. what's left of claudette just a remnant low. wednesday may be even into thursday we will get showers. we go back out to the atlantic, ana they just issued the last advisory. claudette came in this morning in florida, alabama it's just a remnant low. but bill is the big one out there. pretty big winds out there. up to 90 and 95-miles-an-hour: it's going to be heading out to the west northwest, some where out to bermuda.
