the police say that a gang member shot two members of a rival gang inside the pavilion out raging mayor dixon. >> we done need that to happen. we can't tolerate it. >> reporter: a string of assaults prompted the police to add extra officers and all of the violence having an impact on the attitude of visitors. >> i think that things are different during the nighttime. >> reporter: the mayor says that more has to be done to get the guns out of the hands of criminals. >> they were carrying weapons on them and that's why we're focusing on the legislation at the state to deal with the illegal guns. >> reporter: she testified in favor of numerous bills and the house failed to act.

longer a tropical depression even. it's dissipating and there are no advisories on it. claudette dissipated today. the latest focus is on bill. the storm is making its way up to the west, northwest and all signs are that it will continue to strengthen as it takes the track. now, the other thing, a lot of confusion with some of the tracks. it looks like it's heading towards the united states. it looks like it's heading towards bermuda and the united states and a lot of the models kick it to the sea before the united states and we're still talking a few days out. the fact it's moving in this direction shows we'll have to watch it. >> remember, wjz-13 is always on. to get forecast updates, go to wjz.com.

president barack obama is takes his health care pitch to americans. joel brown has more and the president may be willing to compromise. >> reporter: in his nonstop push for health care reform. president obama added part of the sales pitch to a speech to veterans in fee in addition -- phoenix. >> no one will take away the veteran's benefits. there that's the truth. >> reporter: there was a controversial call for a plan fueling more protests. the president's supporters held signs pressing for the public option to and liberal democrats fear they could ban the plan to gain the conservative support. the top aid signal he's open for compromise. >> well, we have to have this choice in the competition. >> and the white house is willing to consider the co-ops and exchanges. not the federal government.

baltimore mayor sheila dixon kicks off an initiative to remove abandoned vehicles. >> we have the resources, we're stepping up and doing more and that is an issue that impacts

not a bad day if you're there. >> yeah, that's a nice day at lock raven. and they're taking a picture of us. >> flat, not much in the way of wind. it's cooler on the water, i'm sure. not a bad place to be this weekend. particularly, yesterday, sunny and hot and it was dry. the dew point yesterday, that was about i have and it came up a little bit today. and it was humid and it wasn't as hot as yesterday. tomorrowing we'll break about 90, it will be feeling warn. taking a look at the temperatures around the region. we have some clouds now. 87 here. 90 in d.c. and sun to the south and west. 92 in hagerstown and cumberland, the hot one. in the valley, 93 degrees and

88 reported in oakland and that's hard to believe. 88 ocean city and elkton, 88 and more sun, north and east. right through central maryland, we had a few clouds this afternoon and that kept the temperatures down somewhat. the winds out of the south east and that keeps the temperatures from getting too high. when they go south and south west, they come over the land and they'll get warm and when they come down the mountains, they'll heat up, but dry out. we'll get a west wind. and out to the west, we have a frontal boundary and this is going to create shower and thunderstorms by wednesday and late to the night west of us. the remnants of claudette, just this area of low pressure with the rain activity. some of the moisture coming up, it may spread along the front and it looks for us, scattered showers and thundershower, possibly wednesday and maybe getting it again on thursday and before the mess moves out.

and speaking of misses, bill is a major category one hurricane and hitting the west, northwest by the weekend and somewhere to the south west, that's bermuda and where we have the track going and once it's up to the latitude, the westerly, should be making a turn to the north and north east, that's what we want to happen. the least impact would be major surf issues from ocean city to florida by the end of the week. we're watching carefully what bill is going to do during the end of the week and weekend. that's the first hurricane of the season. yes, ana is no longer reported. it has no circulation. and bay temperature, 83 and south winds at five to ten knots and tonight, partly cloudy and muggy. 70 for an overnight low and tomorrow, if it gets to 92, it will be warm and humid with a good deal of sunshine to the

it's 87 degrees and partly sunny and dinner time for this family of deer. good evening and thank you for staying was. here are the stories that people are talking about. it's a blue monday for the local governments. they ended with bad news from governor o'malley and budget cuts could force the counties into lay offs and tax increases. >> ground breaking for an emergency medical center is cause for celebration, a bright spot in a dismal spot for people facing cuts. >> they've faced cuts for the road related projects. it hurts. >> reporter: governor o'malley said they stand to lose $250 million in state aid. >> it was making them feel badly and i felt badly to give the news and i woke up earlier

and couldn't go back to sleep. i know at this point, now that we're reducing the spending by $4 billion on a 15 billion dollars state budget, we're into things that affect people in real ways. >> what do we want? >> public services, now. >> reporter: the workers got the message last week that they're $470 million short. maryland divides it through the education and getting the lion share of 39%. 11% to highier education and 9% to public safety and police and 22% of the budget is spent on health and the rest of the state government gets 19%. the rovenner is -- the governor took education out of the picture and everyone else is fair game. >> it's what we're forced to do in this time of tremendous economic contraction that we're coming out of.

that's to dismanned mantle -- dismantle parts of the government because we don't have the dollars to cover the things we would like to be able to do. >> reporter: the next round comes a week from wednesday and unlike the first round, there's no sense of optimism this time that it will be the last. reporting from annapolis, i'm pat warren. and governor o'malley is still working out the specifics of the cuts. two teens are heading behind bars for a carry out robbery that chocked the community and we have more on the crime that drew out rage from mayor sheila dixon. >> well, he was waiting for a food order when he was shot in the leg and then, others started laughing at the victim. surveillance video showed two laughing and others reaching over the man to pick up their orders. last week, the 17-year-old and his cousin, a 15-year-old

pleaded guilty to attempted murder. mayor sheila dixon expressed her anger. and jefferson and johnson were sentenced to 25 years in prison for the crime. montgomery county police have the person shoplifting this $2000 dress. there was confusion as to whether or not the suspect was a man or woman, now, it was a 20-year-old jonathan bradley dressed as a woman. according to the police, he entered the chevy chase store and walked out with a dress. he's charged with spraying mace and theft and a stabbing leaves one dead and another in the hospital tonight in college park in the 19th hundred block of road island avenuerlyier this morning. one was pronounced dead at the hospital. firefighters are stretched

thin in northern california and think're making progress in the wildfires. and here's more information on how a county is under a state of emergency. >> reporter: among a half dozen major wildfires burning in california. the blaze south of sacramento threatens homes and as well as a power plant and transmission lines. the blaze was started by sparks after a hawk hit a power line. the fire nissan barbara -- near santa barbara has a different cause. >> it was from cooking marijuana. >> reporter: here, the town evacuation is lifted and two out buildings were destroyed. one was filled with karen and windows for her dream home. it was going to be part of the

house we were going to build. >> reporter: that was made easier by what was saved. the flames reached within four feet of the house before the firefighters stopped them. >> to have it come that close. i have to say, those guys they're my heros >> reporter: that was echoed by governor schwarzenegger. >> we have, well, we have the best firefighters in the world! >> reporter: while more of the fire is contained, the officials say it's likely to be the end of the month before it's considered out. cbs news, in the santa cruz mountains. two of the fires are 60% contained. alcohol was a factor in a boating accident that critically injured a captain and hurt four passenger. a 30-foot speedboat ran off ground near kent island and jeff was behind the wheel, he was having engine trouble.

the police believe he had been drinking at the time of the crash. the state is trying to buy back crab licenses due to poor response. they're offering money for the licenses. the buy back is important for the state's attempt to rebuild the population. >> so, in any given year, there's 2500 licenses just sitting out there not being used ant it makes it hard for us to manage the fishery not knowing whether or not they'll re-enter the fishery. >> it resulted in a hundred offers and many of them asked for too many up. all of the offers were declined and they'll be given the flat fee counter offer. something's brew anything britain and researchers say it's going calm you down.
