fighting crime. people run for cover as gunfire erupts in the middle of tipper harbor. >> tonight a wjz exclusive with mayor dixon as she walks and talks with police, business owners, and tourists. >> hello, i'm denise koch. >> i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about tonight. 48 hours after a double shooting at baltimore's most popular tourist attraction the mayor pays a surprise visit to the inner harbor where it happened. derek valcourt joins us live. >> reporter: it's a story you'll see only on eyewitness news. the mayor came to see and hear for herself what's happening here in the inner harbor. only eyewitness news cameras were there as mayor sheila dixon made an unannounced visit to the inner harbor, the same

place where a feud between the crypts and the bloods turned violent saturday night. tonight mayor sheila dixon talked to tourists, police officers, local store owners, and eyewitness news. >> reporter: what are you looking for? >> well, i just wanted to walk an and talk to some of the police officers, some of the store owners, just to find out, you know, their impression, their feelings, what things do they think they need. and i talked 0 some of the establishments who said that they definitely need to have more security inside. >> reporter: security outside is already a top priority for the city. since the shooting, large numbers of police officers have patrolled the tourist popular area. >> this is one of the things people come to when they come to baltimore to see, and we want to be able to let folks know that it is still safe and had that we're going to get a handle on this. >> reporter: at the maryland science center the ceo says so

par the headlines haven't hurt business. shoe our sunday was one of the top two sundays we've had all year, that was yesterday. saturday was very strong. today, monday, is one of the best mondays we've had. people are still coming to the inner harbor. >> that's exactly what the mayor wants. she says there will be more surprise visits here in her future. >> of course this is a quiet night, it's a monday night. i'm going come down when it's a little more active. >> reporter: so far, no arrests made in the shootings. both of the victims are expected to make a full recovery. he we're live at tinner harbor, derek valcourt, eyewitness news. >> thank you very much, derek. anyone with any information on that shooting should call police. >> more gunfire in baltimore city tonight. this time a woman is shot while driving her car. you can see the bullet hole that pierced the driver's side of this jeep cherokee. police say the gunman opened fire as the woman was driving on east la fayette. the woman was hit in the leg and treated at the hospital. police did arrest a suspect but

are not releasing any other information. sound proposal. a state delegate somehow managed to lasso a police boat and helicopter to help him pop the question, and now city police have opened an investigation into why mar renne and helicopter officers staged a fake raid on a boat in the inner harbor. turned out john cardin, nephew of ben cardin, was on that boat with his girlfriend. a police spokesman says, quote, definitely there was some poor judgment exercised by some officers. cardin is promising to rei am fwurs department for all expenses. >> forecasters are keeping an eye on the atlantic tonight as just moments ago hurricane bill increased to a category 2 storm. right now key go anywhere. kelly cobiella reports it's the

third storm to threat tenth u.s. this week. >> reporter: tropical storm claudette was the first to come ashore, bringing 50-mile-per- hour gusts and bucket of rain to parts of the florida panhandle sunday night. most locals stayed put. >> about every time this year we experience this type of weather. >> reporter: the season's first system, ana, was tropical storm but has since been downgraded to a depression. just behind her in the atlantic ocean is bill, the first hurricane of the season. weather experts say we can thank el nino for a relatively quiet summer so far. >> el nino typically equals wind sheer, and that tends to disrupt storm organization. >> reporter: for now people in florida's panhandle will be checking the damage after claudette's best shot. >> an? and claudette are no threat to maryland but we are keeping a close eye on hurricane bill. bob turk is tracking the storm. >> aus heard it was just upgraded a few minutes ago to a category 2 storm.

weekend. that's 3.5% drop from last labor day. airlines have cut flights, but there is a bright side. fares are lower, and those who do travel should face fewer crowds at airports. the boss is coming to baltimore. downtown? indy race promoters are banking that you will. >> reporter: downtown baltimore could soon be transformed into a track just like this one. a track made up of every day streets in a major city. baltimore has all the components to make this a fantastic event, and i'm so proud that even in these tough times, people are looking at baltimore. >> reporter: last week the city council passed a measure that gives baltimore racing development the exclusive rights to pursue an indy racing league comp texas in 2011. the track would loop around the convention center with pratt, russell, and light streets as the main street. >> communities that would be impacted seem to be very interested and see the opportunity. >> reporter: the brd expects the event would bring in more than 150,000 visit res and generate between 60 and $100 million. >> what we are going to do is promote this as a three-day festival of speed. >> reporter: just like any other sporting event you have to have a ticket to see the action, and there would be

by the weekend our averages do drop to 84 and 63 but looks like temperatures will be a little above that as we head into the weekend. should be dryer by then. 100 the record in 1957. 81 ocean city, 76 oakland, d.c. warm at 81. a pretty warm night. not much in a the way of wind. a lot of moisture in the air. tomorrow is going to be probably a hot, what we call a hot and humid day with winds coming back from the south, some scattered showers from michigan, ohio, down to west virginia. we did have a couple thunderstorms that popped up, and this evening in shenandoah county, virginia, and a couple of inches of rain in a few spots. still around woodstock, virginia, a flash flood warning until 1:00. very small area but that little area of showers sitting right

there. it's beginning to dissipate, but it is causing some problems down around woodstock, virginia. for us this front is going to hang up around our region, so stay in the warm, humid air, at least probably to the end of the week. by then, scattered showers and thundershowers definitely with us, probably almost every day beginning tomorrow, although tomorrow may be dry most places to our west to north, the best chance of showers. south winds in the bay 5 to 10 knots. bay temperature warm at 83, overnight a warm, humid night. 68 for the overnight low, so it's kind of above normal. tomorrow may get up to 92. we got to 89 today. tomorrow warm, hot, humid. could be a shower or thundershower late in the day or by tomorrow evening. the best chance in the mountain areas. again, on wednesday a better chance of showers and thundershowers. 90 for a high, 90 on thursday, 86 on friday. so the risk of some scattered showers. a chance of more showers on saturday 86. looks like it finally gets dryer and cooler for sunday and monday of next week. maybe around 80 next wreak.
