what you see on tv news today. >> remembering groundbreaking producer, director and creator, donahueit. >> hi, everybody. i'm sally thorner. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. remembering a tv news pioneer. you may not know his name, but you definitely know his work. cbs tv producer director and creator, donahueit has died. we have a report on his decades of work. and how it changed the broadcast you're watching now. >> donahueit was a pioneer, helping to create the blueprint for television news, a career that could be described as illustrious began. he directed many of the cbs news shows, including edward r. murrow's signature show "see it now ." >> i can turn to donahueet and say, don, can you bring in the coast?

>> he directed and produced the famous presidential debate. >> i felt like a referee at a fight. i was giving him the last- minute instructions before they came to -- went to the corner and came out swinging. >> he appeared tired and pale on television and eventually lost the election. he became the first to produce the "cbs evening news" with walter cronkite. he's credited with coining the term "anchorman." but his greatest creation was no doubt "60 minutes." the show that changed the face of broadcast journalism. >> good evening. this is "60 empty -- minutes." it's kind of a magazine for television. >> it was the first news program to become a top 10 television show. it regularly made headlines, with stories ranging from hard-

hitting investigative pieces to interviews with the famous and notorious. the show won every award in the book. >> you're running the piece. >> forget 60 minutes. you don't get on this week. >> he had a knack for knowing what the average american likes to watch and making every script. hewitt had already celebrated his 80th birthday, when in 2004, he stepped down as head of cbs. but he still lent his experience and expertise to the search for new ways to cover tv news in the 21st search. drew levinson, wjz eyewitness news. >> we'll have much more on donahueit's life and reaction to his death, coming up tonight on the cbs evening news with katie couric. the other story people are talking about today is hurricane bill. take a look at these pictures

from nasa. this is from nasa's satellite, clearly showing the eye. the infrared picture shows cold, high clouds, indicating a powerful hurricane. meteorologist tim williams is closely tracking the storm in the first warning weather center. gamp, everyone. this storm is in warm water -- good afternoon, everyone this storm is in warm water. this is a dangerous storm. category 4 storm as of last check. we'll be getting another check as of 5:00. this storm is moving to the west and just around the west/northwest around 16 miles per hour, with winds sustained over 130 miles per hour. gusts up to 161. this is going to be moving toward the u.s. but then taking a bit of a right turn. the winds will start to take it out to see it will hit cooler water. and we'll be looking at the same system that is bringing us showers and thunderstorms over the next few afternoons, helping to glance and deflect it off to see. this storm is really just a few days away from starting to affect the eastern coast of the

u.s. coastline. we will keep you posted. as of now, bill still a category 4 hurricane. we'll keep you updated at 5:00. for instant updates on bill and all of the season storms, log onto wjz.com for the latest storm track and our special hurricane section. an elderly, african american man is attacked in what police are calling a hate crime. now, wjz's exclusive interview with the woman who called for help. adam may has the latest from central booking where one of the suspects is being held. here at central booking, bail has been denied for the one suspect police have under arrest. a 76-year-old black fisherman, severely beaten during what police called a hate crime. >> he said the voice came from behind and knocked them on the ground, kicked them, took his keys and sped off with his truck. >> reporter: the security guard speaking only to eyewitness news, called 911, comforting

the victim until help arrived. >> his eye, left eye was shut. and it was like a golf ball. >> reporter: hours later, police arrested 28-year-old calvin lock ner. earlier this year, he was accused of beating his wife, because she associated with minorities. >> during the interview today, the suspect admitted that he does not like african americans. and we are thus treating this as a hate crime. >> reporter: police are searching for two other suspects. and mayor dixon visited them in the hospital. >> he shared with me that he had been doing this for a number of years and that he enjoyed it because it was a way of relaxing. he also shared with me some other concerns that he had about the park. some things that have changed over the years. >> reporter: at last report, the victim was in serious but stable condition at shock trauma. adam may, wjz eyewitness news. >> thanks, adam. lock ner will next be in court on september 18th. caught in a sting. started after neighbors

complained about people having sex in the park's rest room. maryland natural resources police went under cover last week. they were solicited for sex. two other men were caught in the act. alarming government statistics confirmed what a recent wrong-way crash brought to life. more women are drinking and driving. vic is live in the newsroom with more. >> the number of women arrested for drinking while drunk or -- or driving while drunk, is high in the last 27 years. the most recent incident is in new york, where a woman drove the wrong way on a highway for nearly two hours before a minivan slammed into an suv, killing eight people. an autopsy found the driver's blood alcohol level was above the legal limit. despite the new trend, the vast majority of drunk driving arrests remains men. >> the new statistics were released to coincide with the

government's anti-drinking holiday campaign. calling for u.s. health officials to help manage the swine flu this fall. now they're asking companies to prepare for a large outbreak. >> reporter: new york's roosevelt hospital is getting ready for the possibility of a swine flu outbreak this fall. and not just sick patients. the hospital has to prepare for large numbers of employees coming in contact with the virus and being unable to work. >> we have been constantly preparing and updating our emergency management plans. >> reporter: the government is now advising all businesses to have a flu plan in place. guidelines are posted online at flu.gov. >> the little planning now will help ensure that our economy w stands -- width sand -- with stands whatever it brings us this fall.

>> reporter: if hit hard, the government suggests they cancel face-to-face meetings. encourage high-risk to get vaccinations. and if possible, have employees work from home. >> reporter: encouraging workers to wash their hands and installing sanitizers may also help slow the spread of flu. but even with these steps, millions of americans may still get sick during a pandemic. >> reporter: experts say companies should be ready for a worst case scenario, where up to 30% of their staff is out. >> they have to cross train people. so if they do have a large number of folks who are out, then others can fill those functions. >> when there's fever or cough. >> reporter: it's not just for your health but for the health of your coworkers. in los angeles, teri okita, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, unlike regular seasonal flu, the h1n1 virus, has not retreated during the hot humid

months and so far has affected more than a million americans. many neighborhoods spent the day cleaning up after last night's stormses. -- storms. in middle river, lightning is believed to have started a fire in one home. and in the parkville area, a tree hit by lightning crashed onto a car. luckily, there were no reports of injuries. outside right now, it's mostly sunny. but on tv hill, there are some storms moving in across central maryland. eyewitness news has weather and traffic together. bob turk is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. >> quite a range around the region. to our south, big thunderstorms. heavy rain. around our region, a little dry air is coming aloft. right now, things are pretty quiet. let's take a look at the activity. from clinton down, la plata, charlotte hall, prince frederick, showers moving down that way. all moving off to the east. around the area here, one or

two showers around crofton and south of buoy, heading right toward annapolis there. you folks in annapolis, that looks like it is headed in your direction. very weak stuff. around the baltimore region, we'll have to wait probably a little longer. right now, things are very quiet. may stay quiet tonight. but i doubt it. still a pretty volatile, very humid atmosphere. and we're going to repeat this again over the next two days. sally? >> okay, bob. thanks. let's check on the roads now with sharon gibala. >> i'm happy to report that there is not much going on out there. the worst problem is going to be on the top side of the beltway. that's because of an accident there. and you can see our speed sensors there are only at 21 miles an hour. meantime, there is a look at the delays. and more speed sensors. 22 miles an hour. and 38 miles an hour on the top side. no outer loop delays. there's a look at wilkins. as far as your drive times and

the woman accusing an nfl quarterback of sexual assault went to dinner with him just two days after the alleged attack, according to e-mails just released today, the woman also talked about going to see the rock band journey together. the lawyer for steelers' quarterback ben rothless berger released the e-mails claiming they prove the woman was definitely not raped. some memorabilia of o.j. simpson was convicted of stealing will actually be returned to him. the former football star tried to steal the items inside a las vegas hotel room two years ago. in another twist, most of that memorabilia will be handed over to fred goldman. it is valued at thousands and thousands of dollars. goldman is still trying to collect on a lawsuit won against simpson for the death of his son.

stacy butler reports for wjz, neighbors are stunned. >> she was close. she had a good roommate. she was friendly to everybody else. and it was just a shocker. >> reporter: 28-year-old jasmine fiore, say neighbors, seeped excited to move into our apartment with a female roommate and this man, ryan jenkins. recently seen on the show megan wants a millionaire. but tonight, her fourth floor penthouse is now a crime scene. >> we are searching for any evidence that may lead to the suspect in this case. >> inside forensic investigators dust for fingerprints and shoot videotape of her empty apartment. police want to know who strangled the 28-year-old swim suit model and left her body in a suitcase. she was discovered in a dumpster in buena park saturday

night. >> just isn't right. >> reporter: that same night, say police, brian jenkins walked into the sheriff's station and filed a missing persons report for his wife. then police say he went on the run, in either a black suv, with calgary license places or his wife's white mercedes. >> police believe he may be heading toward canada. >> reporter: police say they married in march, but had the marriage annulled shortly after, but then they got back together. the turnaround was led by a surge of energy stocks. here's a look at the closing numbers. dow was up 51 points at 9279. the s&p is up about 7. the nasdaq is up 13, at 1969. let's go to new york where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. if you have stayed at a

radisson hotel recently, check your credit card statements carefully. someone broke into the company's computer system between last november and may, possibly getting access to customers' credit card numbers. the company runs more than 400 hotels around the world. it's advised to watch out for purchases. and largest maker of farm equipment, deer and company reports that they dropped. it is predicting its worst decline in 50 years. in the battle over swiss bank accounts, ubs agreed to give the irs details on thousands of american residents. the irs has been trying to get that information for years. and if you're job hunting, think twice about what you put on your facebook page.

there's more of -- more of a breeze than there was this morning. it's more like blowing around hot, humid air. we have another day or two of this before we see relief into the weekend. take a look at first warning live doppler radar. we'll show you something we have going on. first off, we have to the south of the metro area, severe weather moving through. severe thunderstorm warning now issued. this is areas south of d.c., down towards st. mary's. and all of this is moving toward the eastern shore. just to give you an idea of what is transpiring. this warm, humid air that sally is mentioning, during the heat of the day, we're starting to get more thunderstorms popping up. we're looking at temperatures

in the mid-80s. and we're seeing high dew points and high humidity levels. and these are starting to pop up and pretty much starting to intensify, because they have so much energy to work with. we're talking about a lot of moisture in the atmosphere. and a lot of juice to draw from. this is what we're talking about. we'll keep you posted. potentially hail involved with them. and again, st. mary's county until 5:00. bwu marshall, 75 degrees. relative humidity at 64%. with the winds from the south and 8 miles per hour. 29.96 and fall suggest your barometer reading. around the state, temperatures ranging from 80 in oakland, 90 in cumberland to 88 in ocean city. and when the coolest spots are down around d.c., that's only because of rain that's cooled the air down there. everyone else is in the mid- 80s. 82 on kent island and 87 in bel air. that wind from the south is just continuing to bring in

that hot, humid air. clouds have kept us shielded from the sun. but what we're dealing with is a front that will push through here through tomorrow. and as a result, on the front edge of that, we're going to see the potential for showers, especially during the heat of the day, when we're getting into this mid- to upper 80 degree range. this front is going to keep things a little volatile over the next day or so. by the time we get into friday or saturday morning, we'll start to see less and less of a chance. but until then, we really have the same dynamics in place. this air is going to start to mix. cooler air aloft, dry air aloft, mixing in. and it's going to be the case the next few days. showers start to move in saturday morning. then we start to see improvement. sunset today, at 7:56. and a breeze, 5 to 10 knots from the south. your forecast looks like this. 70 degrees, partly cloudy, with a stray thunderstorm this evening. warm and humid. tomorrow, 88 degrees. and clouds and sun with a stray thunderstorm. and as part of the ocean, again, people stretching out

it is 4:30. 85 degrees and partly cloudy. hello. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm denise koch. >> and i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about. >> months after his death, michael jackson is expected to be laid to rest next saturday, on his 51st birthday. patty kaufman reports that the man with jackson during his final moments is finally speaking out. >> i want to thank all of my patients and friends -- >> reporter: dr. conrad murray, the subject of a police investigation into michael jackson's death, chose the internet for has first public statement. >> while we've all seen dr. murray's images, this is the first time we hear him speak. i was like, i didn't know he has an iraq cent. -- an accent. it helps define him as a person a little more. >> i told the truth. and i have faith the truth will prevail. >> reporter: meanwhile, the jackson's family confirms that michael will be intered in this

shootings at virginia tech, is releasing his mental health records. the files for seung-hui cho. cho committed suicide after killing 32 students and teachers. it's the worst mass shooting in modern u.s. history. >> the families of the victims want to know if the files contain any warnings which could have prevented the deadly rampage. at this hour, hurricane bill continues to churn in the atlantic. take a look at this new image from nasa. you can clearly see the storm's eye in the center. fishermen in antigua are being advised to dock up their boats as the storm gets closer. a live look outside. here in baltimore, another warm, humid august evening. should we expect storms tonight? let's check in now with bob. we have thunderstorm activity south of the region.

in fact, a severe thunderstorm warning until 5:00 for st. mary's county. a couple of storms down there, with very gusty winds and dangerous lightning. down near extreme southern maryland. from leonardtown. more showers around charlotte hall,ul to prince -- hall, up to prince frederick. and south of crofton, south of 50 there, around the baltimore region, it's pretty quiet. one more shower we had around ocean city is gone now. around the city now, pretty quiet. there are a few showers across p.a. right now, doesn't look like when you see much. for the next several hours may actually stay dry. looks like all that was activity is to the south of washington now. overall, we're doing pretty good on area roadways. just one accident to report. that's going to be in anne arundel county in glen burnie. in fact, on dorsey road on central. watch for that.

speeds pretty close to normal. 52 is your normal spot. also 70 on 97, north of there. meantime, fire activity to report in baltimore county. becklysville road at forston road. as far as delays go, one on the top side, between green spring and falls. and a second one. that will take you eight minutes to get through, with an average speed of 33 miles per hour. on the west side, you slow to 34 miles an hour. there's a look at your drive times and your speeds. for the top and west side, you can see on the top side between 83 and 95. 43 miles an hour. that's your slowest spot with the 14-minute drive time. there's a live look. top side looking busier than it was before. at green spring. this traffic report is brought to you by the maryland department of agriculture. back over to you. >> thank you, sharon. the 42-year-old woman who set herself on fire at a busy florida mall has died from her wounds.

cecilia casuals died yesterday. police say she covered herself in a flammable liquid inside this miami mall and then set herself on fire. witnesses used fire extick -- extinguishers to put out the flames. police have not determined a motive. but they do say the woman has a history of mental illness. monday marked the sixth birthday of hally cummings, the florida girl who disappeared from her father's mobile home monday. now, police say the father's new wife could hold the key to solving this puzzling case. jeff glor has more on the investigation. >> i just want my daughter back. that's it. >> reporter: six months ago, ronald cummings, pleaded for the person who took his little girl to bring her back home. police and volunteers launched a major search effort to find hailing cumming, who disappeared from their mobile home in the middle of the night.

her father's girlfriend, misty crossland, whom he has since married, was babysitting at the time. she told the early show, she discovered the girl was missing when she woke up at 3:30 a.m. >> i tried to call ronald, and he didn't answer. and i walked out on the front porch. and i told him. and i was freaking out. >> reporter: but this week, the sheriff's department says that misty's story doesn't add up. the 17-year-old has failed to provide a detail account of that night. and physical evidence at the scene contradicts what she told police. investigators say the search for haley is ongoing. and they are still hoping to find her alive. >> reporter: countless searches have been completed since haley's disappearance. and 4,000 leads have been received by authorities. some of them have taken investigators as far away as tennessee. a soldier from virginia, who was stationed here in maryland, was killed in afghanistan. 33-year-old sergeant first class william woods of chesapeake was shot while on duty. he died sunday at a medical

center in germany. he was a member of the army's 22nd forces group. the deadliest day in months in iraq. at least 95 people are dead. and more than 400 wounded in a series of bombings, in a government building in baghdad. they said the iraqi government must step up security efforts to keep the people safe. in tonight's healthwatch, there is good news for pop corn lovers. kai is in the newsroom with details. >> the movie going snack is apparently a good source of fiber and anti-oxidants. that's according to a new study, presented at a meeting of the american chemical society. the popcorn provides more of the dietary fiber. now, experts say it's a different form of corn but it's definitely a whole grain. and the corn loses only a little bit of them when it is popped. additionally, through the whole process, the fiber provided in the whole grains is not

removed. denise? >> i'm happy to hear that. thank you, kai. if you can air pop your popcorn and add a minimal amount of salt, yeah, that would be the healthiest. the school of pharmacy is welcoming its inaugural class. >> students from across the country are making history in baltimore city. >> it was probably the happiest day of my life so far. >> reporter: the newly renovated not science center is home to the pharmacy. students are learning their way around through a two-day orientation. >> college of notre dame in maryland is a college of firsts. and they have taken the initiative to start a school of pharmacy as the first women's college in the u.s. to have a school of pharmacy on board and also adopt a pharmacy degree. >> before now, the university of maryland was the only other school in the state to have a school of pharmacy. >> it's very exciting. because you get to be part of history pretty much. because you're going to be the

first of the inaugural class. you're going to be the one that starts the program. and that kind of sets the foundation for it. >> reporter: there's a shortage of pharmacists, locally and internationally. by 2020, there will be a 157,000-pharmacist shortage in the united states. >> it's a concern. because many of our states are not able to fill the positions very easily for pharmacists. so we're hoping that our school of pharmacy in maryland is going to help ease that burden. >> reporter: classes officially begin august 24th. in baltimore city, jessica kartalija, wjz eyewitness news. >> and the program's fourth year is focused on giving students a chance to work in practical settings. we have breaking weather news right now. we're going to go to bob turk in the weather center, who has a tornado warning. bob? >> we're talking about the area in st. mary's county for the next 15 to 20 minutes. a possible tornado. at least as far as radar is

concerned. the circulation with that particular cell. you can see it right over leonardtown. indications, very, very strong storms. just to the west of leonardtown now. we'll zoom in and take a look at it. there it is. from st. clement shores to leonardtown. let's see exactly what we're talking about. this particular area right here. as it moves off to the east. hail size could be as big as 1 1/2 inches. the actual areas that we're talking about, compton. lovedale, society, and briton hill. that storm, perhaps a tornado in this particular cell. for the next 15 to 20 minutes, please be very careful. if you're in that area, do take shelter why immediately. it's moving very quickly. but a tornado is possible with this one thunderstorm cell. just to the north of st. clemens in southern portions of st. mary's county. straight ahead on

breaking weather news to tell you about. let's quickly go to bob turk in the first warning weather center. with news on the tornado warning. we're talking around the leonardtown area. and actually, in the last two minutes, this storm has changed quite a bit. and you can see, from about a minute ago, we had a much darker impulse. when we look at the have lossity. we're not seeing much in the way of rotation anymore.

until the weather system officially cancels this tornado warning, let's still keep an eye out, be very careful. you want to take shelter in that region. it's possible that we might see this. can come out of this particular cell. for the portions of southern st. mary's county. we'll keep tracking it for you folks. as it's moving out to the east. southern portions of st. mary's. that's where this is. may be affecting folks in southern calvert county as well. there you see the cell, heading off to the east and northeast. at about 22 miles per hour. once again, leonardtown area, southern st. mary's, do take note now. >> thank you, bob. the man who intentionally crashed his plane in an laboratory effort to stage his

own death has been sentenced. just moments ago, marcus schrenker learned he will spend three years, four months in federal prison. he admitted to ejecting himself from it over rural alabama and then letting it drift on auto pilot into the ground. prosecutors say he was facing financial ruin back in indiana, where he was a money manager. in addition to prison time, schrenker will still face millions of dollars in penalties, related to his failed business dealings. this is video from the scene. the 24-year-old officer lost control of his patrol car. it set off the highway, down an embankment. that pole penetrated his door and got stuck on his leg. it was later recovered. there are more questions than answers in texas, where police say a driver struck a bike rider.

instead of taking the victim home, he covered it up. >> he's going to be missed a lot. >> reporter: it is a mixture of emotions for the family of 59- year-old ronnie keller. grief for the loss and anger over how he died. >> he didn't deserve to be treated like that. >> saturday night, police say keller was riding his bicycle on main street, when 27-year- old vincent rio hass veered into the wrong lane and struck keller. the impact sent keller into the back of riohass's vehicle. >> the driver shoved my uncle in the back seat of the car and kept going, rather than stopping what he was doing and calling 911. he could have saved my -- uncle's life. >> police say he parked his car in front of the home and tried to hide under a neighbor's car.

police arrested riojas. he could face murder charges. >> he committed a felony in commission of another felony, that being fleeing the scene of a felony. >> we have got to forgive this guy. we have no choice. we cannot have that on our hearts. god will take care of what he deserves. >> of ros in the field believe riojas was drunk at the time of the accident. but the lab report won't be ready for a few weeks. in the meantime, he is being held on $150,000 bond. frantic 911 calls released from colorado, where a woman is attacked inside her own home. >> reporter: 911, what's the address of your emergency. >> there's a bear in our house. and it just attacked my wife. >> is your wife injured? >> yes. >> does she need an ambulance? >> no. >> reporter: the bear was able to sneak into the couple's aspen home. and as the woman was walking by, the bear attacked. she was able to fight it off. miraculously, she was not seriously injured. wildlife officials are now searching for that bear. if it is found, they will

all of the activity still in effect for southern and st. mary's county. nothing around the baltimore region. as we zoom into that region, great mills and tall timbers. you are apparently still in line for this possible tornado. we are seeing some moderate or

wild rotation, with one cell and you can kind of see. if you look at this little scale up here, you've got winds going toward the radar site or away from the radar site. we're very close to determining where is the beach. this cell, heading down right down toward the potomac river, in southern portions of st. mary's county. . and hopefully they'll be in. weather service will be canceling this. there is still a cell down there. pretty strong cell. extreme southern portions of our region in southern st. mary's county. eventually, these will move out over the bay. there you see that one cell moving right into the bay right now, into the outer portions of the potomac river. let's take a look at our weather around here. pretty quiet around here. we have a tornado warning officially still in effect for the next 10 minutes or so. take a look at our temperatures around the region.

pretty warm and humid afternoon. not quite as warm as it has been. only 85. dew point high as 72. south winds 8. 80 in oakland. 91, cumberland. 88 in ocean city. around the baltimore area, temps still in the warm, humid mid-80s. temperatures in the 70s. southerly winds keep us in the very warm, humid side. showers to our south this morning. sunshine. and now this batch of showers with that possibility of severe weather, extreme southern portions of the region. that will eventually move in at the potomac and into the southern bays. mariners down there, you folks on boats. be very careful. we still have a lot of in activity in the next couple of days. one out to the west now, kind of weakening. eventually, we'll see this dry weather. this line of storm to the north. line of storms to the south.

hi, everybody. i'm sally thorner. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> breaking weather to tell you about. a tornado warning for one part of our state. >> radar indicating rotation with one of these thunderstorm cells. in extreme southern st. mary's county. just around red gate. apparent -- apparently, some perhaps people seeing a funnel cloud or perhaps a tornado. has not been verified yet. but we did get some indication around red gate. down to west point beach. perhaps a funnel cloud or tornado in that region. we're going to look into this storm. first of all, let's show you a lapse. show you how we move through that region. it's moving quickly. but as we look into this storm, you can take a look to the right here, you can see the winds going toward the radar site. and right now, i'm not seeing much in the way of differences.
