mysterious emergency. dozens of athletes collapse in the middle of a high school football field. the investigation into what made so many so sick. hello. i'm denise cook. here's what people are talking about. a scary situation as a number of teens fell sick on the the football field during practice. it happened around 5 this evening. >> reporter: everyone was scrambling. chopper 13 first over the scene at the kent island high school football field where a dozen or many players suddenly fell ill.

it's so unusual to have so many sick at the same team that they were looking to rule out chemical exposure that might have caused the illness. >> at this time, we don't have word of a chemical issue. they appear to be dehydrated. that's common in this kind of weather. we're not ruling anything out. we're keeping our options open. >> reporter: the team had been on the field less than an hour in sweltering conditions. amanda alaska man was in soccer practice when they got sick. >> all of a sudden i saw 12 guys on their knees throwing up. i saw a couple throw up. then all of the ambulances came. >> reporter: 12 players were taken to the hospital. >> we have received starting at about 6 p.m. this evening five young men from kent island high school.

all are in fair condition. >> reporter: other players were kept inside the school for observation. the soccer coach says the heat could have been the culprit. >> this week it's been humid. i don't know what they are doing at home if they are rehydrating. we tell the kids to make sure they get plenty of fluids. >> parents weren't sure what to think. >> it's concerning. when you don't know what it is, it's scary. we don't know any information right now. >> reporter: at last check, the police and fire departments are still saying that it appears to have been heat exhaustion. we'll keep you posted in the event that something changes. i'm pat warren. >> thank you. another medical emergency back here in baltimore as 10 people were hospitalized following a carbon monoxide

leak. everyone was evacuated from the filling and packing warehouse in rossville after one employee collapsed around noon. emergency crews found co levels serious enough to cause death. the leak is blamed on propane fueled forklifts. the workers suffered minor exposure symptoms. an elderly man beaten on a fishing trip is back at home. police have arrested the suspects suspected in the attack. they are teens. it's believed they beat the man simply because of the color of his skin. >> reporter: these are the faces of the three men at the center of the investigation into one of the biggest hate crime attacks baltimore has seen in recent years. all three now accused in the brutal beating of a 76-year-old african-american fisherman early tuesday morning. 17-year-old zachary watson and amanda miller arrested separately at their homes.

calvin lochner was also arrested. the police commissioner says it's unclear whether the teens were motivated by race. but it is clear they had a role in the attack. >> there's a couple different accounts as to who did what. even as subtle as who drove the vehicle when it crashed. i think that the version depends on who you talk to. >> reporter: a doll hitler was a role model for lochner. >> i thought all those days were behind us. >> steven hains is neighbors

with the victim. he's glad all three suspects are in jail. >> i pray and hope that justice will come to them and they will get what they deserve. >> reporter: all three face a long list of criminal charges including attempted murder and carjacking. i'm derek valcourt, eyewitness news. >> lochner has spent most of this decade behind bars. he has arguably one of the toughest jobs in the city and now andre gonzales is getting a bonus. the chairman of the school board says the $29,000 bonus is a reward for his efforts towards greater enrollment and positive gains in a number of areas in achievement. old wounds ripped open today as the man behind the bombing of flight 103 is released from prison. 270 people died in that crash.

a student's mother is facing a whole new kind of grief. we have that interview. >> reporter: scottish officials say releasing the ailing bomber was the humanitarian thing to do. others disagree saying this is a horrible injustice to the victims and their families. convicted flight bomber left scottland a free man. he returned and received a hero's welcome. it has sparked outrage. >> this man was convicted of the largest mass murder on british soil. >> reporter: he reportedly has an advanced state of progress -- prostate cancer. >> our justice system demands that judgment be imposed but compassion be available.

bermuda. this has hurricane bill steaming closer to the island. the the storm lost a little power, but you can still see the eye. bob is tracking the storm from the weather center. >> i have a brand new picture that just came in of the eye. clearly showing there moving off to the northwest right now. there you see the eye. there's puerto rico to the south. there's been very little change in the track. it's been kept the last four or five days. the winds are around 120 with higher gusts. by saturday afternoon and evening, it will be off the east coast about 500 miles. for the atlantic coast areas, 7 to 15 foot waves and swells along the shore and dangerous rip currents can be dangerous.

if the life guards say don't go in the water, don't go in the water. it could be tragic. the waves will be impossible to control. >> thank you, bob. a maryland man celebrates life after collapsing from a heart attack dangling from a rock climbing wall. tim jessicaer is alive because there were nurses on the scene and an automated defibbery later. >> reporter: kent jessicaer was working together. something went wrong. >> 10 feet off the wall i felt dizzy. i decided i need a rest. the command is take. my wife didn't hear me. i passed out before i said anything. >> she began to wonder what was wrong. >> i thought he just flipped.

then i realized he wasn't making any effort to get back on the wall. i thought i better get him down. >> what happened here was part miracle and part great planning and execution. the right people just happened to be here at the right time to offer immediate care. but had there not been an aed available, the chances he would have died is great. an experienced climber was nearby. they both sprang into action. >> we lowered him to the ground. we checked for a pulse. we started chest compressions. we yelled to call 911. >> they followed the aed instruction. >> make sure people know where ands make sure they know how to use it. it's a lifesaver. >> the miracle is that according to the nurse, only 3% of heart attack victims are revived after they collapsed. jessicaer is lucky to be alive.

we have some clouds in central maryland. the complete forecast is coming up. first, the aftermath from a powerful storm system is being felt across the midwest. homeowners are cleaning up. tornados were confirmed in at least four states. tens of thousands of customers from minnesota to illinois were left without power. in northwest indiana, many homes were damaged when a twister touched down. there were no reported fatalities from the storms. gruesome details of his ex- wife's death. the man hunt continues for a reality show start. her fingers and teeth were removed when they found her body. her former husband ryan jenkins was charged with murder today. he was only one of her questioning when the body was found on saturday. however, that's when jenkins

report released their annual rankings today. >> reporter: it's time to move in. getting dorm rooms ready comes with help from resident substantiates and parents. being on your own at some universities and a good place according to rankings by u.s. news and world report magazine. stevenson university ranked second among 4-year colleges in the north. enrollment doubled over the last 10 years and 1,400 students live on campus. >> we look to see what is the need in the community. we've been called light on our feet. we're able to make changes quickly. we're able to respond to what the needs are. >> reporter: for some students and parents, one need is to be close to home.

temperatures 71 in oakland. 87 in ocean city. around the baltimore region, temperatures around the 80- degree mark. out to the west, a sharp frontal system will be heading east over the next day or so. by friday and saturday, it will be in our vicinity. with that showers and thunderstorms. that's going to miss us. but the front will be approaching us. we're destined to get showers and thunderstorms. some of them come in locally heavy. this front will help kick bill out towards the east away from us as it heads towards bermuda. by the time it gets to our coast on saturday night, it will move away from the atlantic show. we'll have very high tides and surf. very rough surf all weekend. be careful if you're heading anywhere along the coast area.
