this is wjt and wjz baltimore. >> from the city to the counties to your neighborhood. now it's complete coverage. it's wjz, maryland's news station. >> plus storms and big waves. all of this rain leads to flash flood watches and warnings across maryland. meanwhile the beaches feel the effect of hurricane bill. thanks for joining us. good evening everyone i'm adam may. weather continues to be the big story tonight and lots to tell you about. heavy rains poured down in parts of the states tonight. you can see that here this evening. closer to the coast the beach is feeling the wrath of hurricane bill. the beaches are closed today due to dangerous surf conditions. the complete weather warning coverage let's condition with bernadette woods she is tracking bill and other storms. >> that's right. a lot going on around the area.

doppler warning still some rain out. there not the heaviest of rain that we saw earlier. but when we put it in motion you can see all of that winding down. still seeing the greens and blues out there but lighter rain than what we were dealing with earlier. a flood warning in effect for caroline county until 1 1:30. but what i want to do is show you one more thing. take with me here what we have got going on when we highlight the last two days worth of rain there are areas between 4-8 inches showing up here. this is on radar so not ground confirmation. but northwest of dc some five inch and three inch just around annapolis three inch totals. so a lot of rain in the last two days. that's why the flood watch is in effect. flip it over and show you the flood watches that continue for the next few hours. that flash flood warning. and with all of this going on take a look hurricane bill is still churning out there causing the problems with the surf along the coast and the

high current risk. that will continue into tomorrow. the latest on bill the 11:00 update is still a category one but the big movement now see the movement to the north, northeast at 25 miles per hour away from the u.s. coastland keep you updated and have a full forecast. >> took a good turn, bernadette. thank you very much. our first coverage continues right now with pat warren. >> reporter: beached, crashing waves battle the ocean store the beaches are closed to swimmers today because of this dangerous surf. >> they are limiting no activity in the ocean. some beaches are not allowing surfing or boogie boards because they have small areas allowing no one in. in our case allowing people to be on the beach. we don't want them in the water where it will be dangerous. >> reporter: the first taste of trouble was yesterday morning. >> rough very tight. >> very rough. the roughs i've ever been in. >> reporter: ocean city swimmers being smacked around a little bit. >> swimmers in bermuda didn't

have to be told twice. >> some people were nervous about coming out here even but i don't see any flying palm trees. this is just a windy day but it is pretty incredible just to take it in as an experience to see what nature provides. >> reporter: flooding on the island has cut power to several thousands of people. >> no electricity. >> you wouldn't dare go out there you go out to sea. >> reporter: while the folks couldn't get in the water residents here couldn't avoid it as the rain closes down sidewalk cafes and people take shelter in the beginning of a ground soaking night. >> i used to work down in the super mill area and i have heard about cars getting soaked away. >> i was watching the news and knew it was bad out and knowing that it will deliver a pretty big punch and what it has been doing just recently use your head and just stay inside. >> that was pat warren reporting. meteorologist bernadette woods will have an update on both of

those storms coming up in ten minutes. all weekend long we are tracking hurricane bill log on to wjz.com for the special hurricane section. meanwhile one strike caused a huge fire in prince george's county. several families in the district heights area just south of capital heights had to be evacuated at 5:00 a.m. it broke out and damages an apartment complex is estimated at half a million dollars. well, more signs of the troubled economy. 2100 people applied for firefighter positions today in baltimore city. that monstrous crowd filled the hallways of the convention center just overflowing there. applicants had to take a written test. and then a smaller group will advance to physical fitness testing. they are looking for firefighters and emts. >> we are looking for diversity inspect african americans and hispanics and all of the culture of baltimore. looking for young, healthy,

athletically fit men and women to fill the positions within the baltimore city fire departments. >> on friday maryland's unemployment increased to 7.3% up 3% from the same time last summer. a baltimore city homeowner is alive thanks to a recently installed home alarm. investigators say just hours earlier firemen installed a detector inside this house. a woman was able to escape without injury and tonight the cause of this fire is under investigation. tonight we have learned that virginia tech's former counselling center director is not going to face any criminal charges. robert miller admitted to taking a woman's mental health records home with him when he left the school in 2006. he found the records for cho last month packed away with his personal belongs. the documents show that cho was depressed and exhibited self- destructive behavior. he killed 23 people and then himself in the blackbird campus

in april of 2007. from the eastern shore this weekend police right now are investigating a multiple shooting. five people between the ages of 18-25 were hurt late on friday night. they were all standing here in the manor apartment complex. police are still looking for that gunman. none of the injuries are said to be life threatening. quite a mess for highway crews in northern baltimore county this morning. take a look at this tractor trailer jackknifed right on i- 83 at belfast road. state police tell us that the truck fell over on top of an unattended vehicle sitting there on the shoulder. some fuel spilled on to the road that triggered a cleanup that closed down traffic on that inn center state for a couple of hours. since been re-opened. a lot of people in the market for a new car are rushing to dealership. the government's cash for clunkers program will end soon on monday night. >> a good example of what can happen if the government does it right. >> reporter: jerry and betsy mason turned in their clunker

for a brand new toyota sion. >> taking all of these terrible gas mileage cars off the road. not just recycling them getting rid of them. >> in a nutshell a government initiative where they want to take the gas guzzlers off the street and replace them with better gas mileage and also safer vehicles. >> reporter: the $1 billion the government spent on the cash for clunkers program has boosted private spending. >> i think whatever they need to do to stimulate the economy, great. >> reporter: dealers are having a hard time keeping cars on the lot. but come monday, this popular program comes to an end. >> we are advising motorists and consumers who are interested in taking advantage of the program to do so over the weekend as quickly as possible but to be mined full of what they are doing inspect their pursuit of the bargain. >> reporter: if you are thinking about turning your old clunker in you may be eligible for a $3,500 or $4500 discount. but before you head to the dealerships there are a few things you need to know. >> they must have owned their

car in their name for the last year. the car must be insured in their name as well. and obviously the car must run. so those are important things that they must know to even be eligible to even participate in the program. >> all we have to do is just follow the detail of the program and the consume letter get the best shopping. >> reporter: happy shopping. >> apparently some dealers are concerned in getting the paperwork filed in time and plan on pulling out a little bit earlier so call ahead before heading out to the dealership. two big stars made some waves at the inner harbor earlier michael phelps and shaquille o'neal said they will meet for a face-off swim meet. it will be held tomorrow in maryland. the stars had a few choice words for each other. >> whenever you are ready, let's go. that's all i got to say. nothing else. >> michael, i just want to thank you for the opportunity. you are are a great athlete.

. we just got some new information on a prison riot in kentucky. four prisoners now remain hospitalized after several buildings were set on fire last night. the damage was so severe that more than half of the 1200 prisoners had to be taken to other facilities. residents who live near that prison say they are being more conscience especially after

this riot. >> it makes you appear re hen sieve. of course i double lock the doors. every once in a while you hear a sound out back and flip the back porch light on to see. living this close i would be worried they will run away and if this is the last place they will come to is across the street. >> they are recovering and the prison has been on lockdown since tuesday. the exact cause of the riot is still under investigation. the pennsylvania health club where three women were shot and killed welcomed back its members today. the la fitness allowed members back in after three weeks after a gunman opened fire on a class full of women. members commented on how they feel going back inside that gym? >> it is a terrible tragedy. i think everyone coming in will have a sad heart at first. but i think we all have to move on. >> that shooter killed three women and wounded nine others. he then turned the gun on himself. the fbi expresses outrage

against scotland officials for the release of a lockerbip bomber. he told scotland's justice minister the release gives comfort to terrorist all over the world. the minister responded by saying his decision was based on compassionate grounds the bomber was allowed to return to his home in lib yeah after being diagnosed with prostrate cancer. responsible for the flight that killed 207 people onboard the pan am flight. >> president obama says he is glad that a lot of americans are getting involved in the healthcare debate but also very concerned about the number of false statements being made. in his weekly radio addressed to he debunked the myths circulating across the country in town hall meetings and some parts of the media. >> let's start with the false claim that illegal immigrants will get health insurance under reform. that's not true. illegal immigrants will not be

covered. that idea has never even been on the table. and as every credible person who has looked into it has said, there are no so-called death panels. an offensive notion to me and to the american people. these are phony claims meant to divide us. president obama also addressed the option of offering a public healthcare insurance plan. he says that those people who prefer their private insurer would not be forced to switch into any public plan. well, in just a few days we are going to see if back to school shopping helped the u.s. economy. but so far it appears that many parents are sticking with pencils and papers and nothing extra. they are still reporting lack luster sales. one little glimmer of help, however, coming in from overseas. retail sales rose in the u.k. to the highest level since spring of 2008. well, this is the last weekend left for many students as the new school year is just a few days away. tonight gigi barnett explains that one school district is now carefully reviewing its goals

and challenges for the new year. [ music ] >> reporter: the clock is ticking on summer fun for maryland students. but for many school leaders the work of going back to school has already begun. like this retreat for baltimore county school board members. one challenge for the school district is its growing diversity. the message for teachers is clear. >> use the talents that you have to structure a classroom where learning is exciting. >> reporter: in baltimore county is about where it was last year at a little bit more than 100,000 students. the diversity is increasing. school leaders have noticed the a slight influx of african american students. >> we need to teach children with regard to their learning preferences and learning styles and of course many students come to us at different levels of readiness. >> while the look of baltimore county schools is changing, school leaders say the standards of achievement should not. one way to make sure that happens is using cutting edge

technology. and one way to do that is with a virtual classroom like this one at chesapeake high school in he is sex. the computer program teaches students how to combine real world math and technology to solve problems and to get them career ready. >> i hope we will be able to replicate what we learn at that school in the virtual reality realm of teaching. because i think that's where we are going to be in the next decade. >> but for now, students play and the countdown to school is on. a i'm gigi barnett, wjz eyewitness news. >> all of the state school districts head back to school before the labour day weekends. the last ones start on september 1st. >> well, many sailed over to the annual yeah gottaregatta that allowed sail tores to get out there and compete.

it is a non-profit that strives to make sailing available to everyone. they were handing out a lot of awards. the race benefits the cancer's free open program for people with disabilites. not a good day to be out on the water today though meteorologist bernadette woods. >> at least it held off with the rain during the morning and the heavy rain in terms of thunderstorms later on in the day. >> a little glimmer. >> enough to get out of yard work today though. >> that's a good way to looking at it. >> an update here a lot around the counties roads still underwater because of. this the flash flood warnings have been cancelled officially for them. a flash flood warning in effect for caroline county. we want to go over to first warning doppler radar and show you on that just a couple of showers are left on there. a floor flood warning in the grey right here. the spotty showers that's about it. most of it is leaving us. just seeing a little bit of drizzle coming down.

a lot of fog out. there most of the rain moving off to the north right now. so overall this is what we have going on. a flash flood watch if we can go back to that graphic right now. also along the coast some coastal flood advisories in in effect and because of bill passing offshore we also have that rip tide risk very high which is why they closed a lot of the beaches today. that trend will continue into tomorrow. not sure what the prognosis is with the beaches but that high risk with the rip currents tomorrow. and along all of these areas here. if you live in one of these counties and you usually get that higher than normal high tide that's going to happen again tonight with everything that's going on. so that's why we have a coastal flood advisory in effect. rain moving through during the overnight that is all out of here. the heaviest the showers and thunderstorms tonight. here is the front though that's causing all of it. it really got stopped up because of bill. the front that's forcing bill back out to see. but the same storm that got

stopped up and caused us some few rounds of heavy rain. bill is making its way off to the northeast. that is the update at 11:00. north, northeast is the wind direction here. still a category one storm and it will continue to move in this direction and really take off as it heads into the open waters. for us what that means is temperatures very muggy outside. you can see comfortable as far as the numbers go but the due points republic. they have been. that's why we are still getting downpour was these thunderstorms. tomorrow a chance and as that happens we could still have downpours. but after that everything get moving again. this will start moving off to the east with bill gone. by monday it does get out of here. the drying process begins. out on the waters wind turning around on the northwest. in the waters going down to 19 degrees. showers and thunderstorms and then tomorrow still a couple of showers and thunderstorms are possible. after that, though, we start to dry it out 87 on monday. 89 on tuesday.
