california wildfires, hundreds told to evacuate. this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, august 28th, 2009. captioning funded by cbs good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm michelle gielan. it's an unbelievable story. a california girl kidnapped nearly two decades alone has been found alive. jaycee lee dugard had been held captive by a convicted rapist. >> reporter: jaycee lee dugard hadn't been seen or heard from in 18 long years. >> there are no known attempts by her to reach out to anybody. >> reporter: so when she accompanied the convicted sex oh fender and his wife nancy to a parole meeting in concord, california, authorities got suspicious. during questioning they discovered jaycee now 29 now called alyssa was the

11-year-old girl kidnapped in 1991 in south lake tahoe. and it turns out philip garrido had fathered the children with jaycee. >> none of the children had gone to school, they had never gone to a doctor. they were kept in complete isolation. the two girls were 11 and 13. they were held in a secret area behind gar rideau's homes. >> the hidden backyard had tents, sheds, and outbuildings where they spent most of their lives. >> reporter: neighbors say they never saw jaycee or the girls. >> kind of a shock. right here in your neighborhood where somebody has been kidnapped and living here for how many years. >> reporter: jaycee's stepfather is also in shock and worried about her state of mind. >> i think she's basically 29 year old and basically 11 years old. >> reporter: he's held on rape

and lewd and lasciviousing ats with a minor. she's had a reunion with her mother after 18 years. more than 20,000 people waited in line to say good-bye to ted kennedy. the slow sad procession will resume this morning, and a memorial service will be held this evening. karen brown is in boston with details. karen, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, michelle. at this hour a military honor guard is standing individual jill at senator ted kennedy's casket, and the library is getting prepared for the thousands more they expect to show up today. his widow vicki says the outpouring from the public has been of great solace to the family. more than 20,000 people lined up in the early morning hours to pay their respects to senator ted kennedy. >> he was a giant. more than a man died. much more than a man died. >> reporter: so many turned out that the john f. kennedy library

in boston stayed open for an extra three hours. each mourner paid tribute in their own way with a prayer, offering a salute, or even clutching a book. reverend jesse jackson was among the thousands, putting his hand over his heart as he paused over the draped casket. the good-byes began earlier thursday as the senator's body was taken into boston. kennedy's widow vicki says she's touched by the outpouring of support. >> teddy loved the people of this state. he loved this city. and it was just an extraordinarily moving. >> reporter: later tonight the family will hold an invitation-only memorial service here at the john f. kennedy library. it's a celebration of the senator's life and his impact on this country. president obama will also head to boston today ahead of saturday's funeral. the president's staff says he's been hard at work o finishing

the yeulogy he'll deliver. >> reporter: preparations are already under way at arlington's bur dwral. for now marks a blue flag with kennedy will lie. he'll finally rest next to his two brothers. and scheduled to speak at tonight's memorial are joe biden and john mccain, showing he had the rare about to forge true friendships with folks who didn't always agree with him. i'm karen brown. michelle, back to you. karen, thank you for that report. in california more than a thousand people have been told to evacuate ahead of raging wildfires. there are nearly six fires burning. overnight flames destroyed at least one home in a seaside community where at least 1200 have been ordered to evacuate. >> right now we have three

helicopters from l.a. county and one from l.a. city just as a normal response would be. so they're doing an extremely good job in assisting in the fire and knocking out the fire, but most of the work, of course, is going to be done by hand crews, and we do have engines in areas providing structure protection. and north of downtown l.a. residents of another 500 homes were told to evacuate when a fire kicked up overnight. this morning tropical storm danny is starting to make an impression on the atlantic coast. a tropical storm watch is in effect for the north carolina shore. danny has sustained winds of 45 miles per hour but may strengthen as it heads north. large swels and dangerous rip currents are expected up and down the coast. two american soldiers were killed this morning by a roadside bombing in iraq. it happened in eastern baghdad while the americans were on patrol with the iraqi troops. the soldiers based at ft. hood, texas, have not been identified. more than 4,000 have been killed in tie rack war.

asian markets headed both ways this morning. allison is here with more. good morning. >> good morning, michelle. asian markets were mixed overnight. nikkei by up to about 60 points. hong kong lost more than 1%. prices there fell at an alarming rate. some analysts say the numbers threaten the recovery of the japanese economy. toyota has called it quits at a plant in california that it shared with general motors for some 25 years. the move puts 4,200 jobs on the line and has been condemned by united autoworkers union who called the move devastating. >>÷@on wall street the dow saw gains for the eighth straight day, its best streak since 2007. dell reported weaker earnings but still performed beyond expectations and the dow closed up at 37 points with a nasdaq up by three. the fdic says its returns

are down 20% in the second quarter. that's the lowest level since the early '90s. the agency that backs bank deposits still has a billions in reserves and has no plans to borrow from the treasury department. identity theft can strike anyone, even the chairman of the federal reserve. ben bernanke's personal checking account was targeting when his wife anna's purse was stolen from starbucks on capitol hill. her wallet contained her checkbook, credit cards and i.d. numbers. they believe the perpetrators are part of a sophisticated ring of identity thieves. michelle? >> thanks. just ahead on the "morning news," a british teenager sails to a new record. and the aggressive brain cancer that senator ted kennedy fought. alabama.

i'm semi retired and i'm here to tell a story. my parents all smoked. my grandparents smoked. i've been a long-time smoker. you know, discouragement is a big thing in quitting smoking. i'm a guy who had given up quitting. what caused me to be interested was, chantix is not a nicotine product and that intrigued me. the doctor said while you're taking it you can continue to smoke during the first week. sunderland who completed in july. nasa hopes to launch the space shuttle "discovery" tonight. the treadmill named for stephen coal bar. forecasters say there's a 60% chance of good weather for the launch. the death of senator ted kennedy has focused new attention on brain cancer, in particular the aggressive type which killed him within 15 months of diagnosis. more than 10,000 americans h diagnosed with it every year. only about one-third of them survive one year and only one in ten live beyond two years. dr. jon lapook has more. >> reporter: 64-year-old susan row han did not know ted kennedy but she knows his struggle. >> he was diagnosed at the same time i was. i'm here. i'm very sad he isn't. >> reporter: senator kennedy fought with the best medicine available, including surgery,

chemotherapy, and the most advanced forl of radiation. even so -- >> survival is typically measured in months. it's not a very long survival. >> reporter: improving survival includes. the hope is that the vaccine teaches the immune system to recognize and kill the cancer. this year the fda approved a new drug for brain cancer, avastin, which may cut off the tumor's blood supply and is showing promise. >> we've never seen that before. the next frontier, customized. >> learn what's unique about the patient's tumor and try to take advantage of it selectively. >> reporter: susan rohan is doing well. after taking avastin and relying

grandkids. now with ted kennedy's passing it's up to them to take the torch from him. from the beginning the nation has followed them. >> this is my daughter caroline kennedy. >> reporter: the big sister care line and her baby brother john, children of camelot. john kennedy jr. seemed like a natural to follow in his father's footsteps. that hope was extin gived by his death in 1999. last year care line set off a media frenzy when she flirted with hillary clinton's vacated senate seat but after a poorly received political tour, she withdrew her name. two of robert kennedy's 11 kids for a time did follow their follow's fact. kathleen was lieutenant governor of maryland but left politics after a losing a bid for governor in 2002. joseph the second is a former congressman whose political career fell after a scandal.

ted kennedy's youngest child patrick entered politics at 21 and currently serves as congressman from rhode island. his daughter. and rory whose projects focus on the poor and disadvantaged. his son bobby jr. is a prominent environmentalist. >> i think our parents tout us the education, talents we've been ginch, the money, the welt, they were owned by god and we had a responsibility to use them in a way that would make other people's lives more comfortable. >> reporter: all five of eunice shriver's kids are involved in public service. timothy heads the olympics, the organization his mother founded. of course, maria shriver is first lady of california. >> the family set high standards, and they're always worthwhile measuring up to -- exceeding them when i can't. >> reporter: a burden shared by the next generation. so while ted kennedy's passing
