4:00 pm
public memorial for senator ted kennedy. eyewitness news at 4:00 starts right now. hi, everyone. i'm adagent ofam -- adam may. here's what people are talking about tonight. a nasty combination of weather. at this hour, a flash flood watch is in effect for most of maryland. warnings and right now, tropical storm danny is on the horizon. there is a lot happening right now. how is danny going to affect tonight and the rest of the weekend? we have extensive first warning weather coverage. marty bass is tracking danny. but first, let's start out with tim williams. >> we're going to talk about
4:01 pm
danny, but first we want to get to our storms. the storms are in place. pretty much, the storms have been rolling in. what we're dealing with right now. you're seeing heavy rain moving on across the delmarva. right across the stateline. henderson down toward easton, seeing pretty strong storms. we're seeing over near trappe. and over to baltimore county and again the eastern shore. what we're seeing. what we're dealing with, we're looking at for the most part, heavy storms that are going to be developing through the afternoon. the bigger picture shows that these are going to be developing. we'll keep you posted. and as we are looking at the advisory map, while we're really going to be seeing the flash flood watch in effect through 2:00. now, the other story is danny. danny is definitely part of a one, two, three punch. we're going to identify what is
4:02 pm
going on with this storm. and for now, we send it over to marty bass. >> good afternoon. here is the disorganized storm that we are continuing to call danny. and let's go ahead and take a look at the 5:00 advisory, which will tell the story of danny. barely a tropical storm now. 45-mile-an-hour winds. and just kind of creeping along. still no projected to follow this track, offshore north, and then bearing off to the northeast. and i point that out because danny is just getting so willy- nilly. and that's the problem. the good news is, he's disorganized. the bad news is, what if all of a sudden, he completely falls apart, doesn't get a name. and meanders here into the gulf stream and explodes into another named storm with a track unknown at this time. it's kind of almost better to say, this is the devil, we know. we're watching.
4:03 pm
we hope he continues on his current path. but as tim mentioned, he is just part of a one-two-three punch. danny, this big low that is giving us all of the flash flood watches and advisories and all the rain. and then out to the west, there is a cold front that is going to come in and give us more consternation tomorrow. we're almost seeing a carbon copy of last weekend. we'll be updating this story for you throughout the 4:00, 5:00, and 6:00, and online throughout the afternoon and evening at wjz.com. let us suffice to say, get your umbrellas out, you're going to need them over the next few hours. >> thank you so much. i don't know about you at home, but that thunder last night woke me up right out of my sleep. some powerful storms hit hard across a very wide area. but as alex demetrick reports, it also caused isolated damage in spots and flooding threats just about everywhere else. >> reporter: any rain could fall now would have nowhere to go but downhill.
4:04 pm
the ground is so saturated from last night's heavy downpours. >> reporter: streams throughout central maryland are running fast and high and could climb higher if heavy rains hit again. and if those rains come with the kind of violent thunderstorms they did early this morning, the damage that hit lutherville could touch down anywhere. >> we were already asleep. and all of a sudden, we heard this crack. and we thought lightning had struck the house. >> around 1:00, i heard what sounded like bombs going off. and shortly after, heavy, torrential rains for about 40 minutes. >> reporter: damage was scattered, as winds rip -- limbs ripped loose by heavy winds caused damage. and a huge tree was split in half, bringing down tons of wood along the edge of this home, while residents slept just inside. >> in is our bedroom right here. you know, 5 more feet to the
