teenager beaten to death on his bicycle. we begin with breaking news in the first trial of the murder of a teen in crofton. a teen had admitted to manslaughter in the beating death of christopher jones. more on the plea and what's next in the case. good afternoon, mike. >> reporter: good afternoon everybody. it was such an emotional day in court today. the suspect, the teenaged suspect who was 14 at the time of the beating addressed the parents of the victim and told them how sorry he was. his mother did the same thing. and we had victim impact statements from a mother, a father, and a sister. and i can't express in words how painful it was to see them and hear their pain in their own words today. this is not necessarily a guilty plea. there's different terminology in juvenile court. the judge ordered that the teen

suspect who we are not naming be in a facility for an undetermined amount of time. javel george is charged as an adult. prosecutors would not say whether this teen suspect who had admitted to manslaughter today would testify in his case. we spoke to the victim's mother and we'll have that on eyewitness news at 4:00. >> as he said, much more on this plea and the rest of the things that took place in the annapolis courtroom. 6 to 12 speed cameras will be installed in selected school zones.

>> reporter: so far no details on which of the school zones around the county that the police are looking at, but county police do have a speed camera plan. now they just have to convince the county council to support it. >> pass one of these school zone signs and you may pass a speed camera. this year the speed camera bill was passed to leave it up to local governments. if baltimore county police have their way, 12 will be on the streets. >> somebody has to be looking out for these guys. speeders have to be kept in check. >> some think revenue is the motive behind the cameras. >> police department, my office, has stayed out of the discussion regarding any

revenues. and i would remind the public if we abide by the laws, it will generate nothing. >> reporter: it would not add points to your driving record if you get a ticket. there'll be a chance for public comment at the work session today. the county council will have the final vote on the speed cameras at the next meeting, september 8th. if everything is approved, cameras could be installed as soon as october 1st. police say in 2007, there were 14 speed related deaths on baltimore county roads. police are investigating the death of a man last night. a woman stumbled across the body lying in the road. he was unloading his car and a group of armed men shot him. police don't have any suspects or a motive.

if you have any information, call crime stoppers at 18667- lockup. >> a baltimore teenager is behind bars after an scene from a detention center. he has admitted to struggling with a staffer. the staffer may need surgery for a wrist injury. the judge ordered 18 months of the sentence. today marks the deadline to fix 82 planes. but the airline needs more time to find parts. the faa could ground some of the fleet. the parts are perfectly safe they say. but they were made by a subcontractor who wasn't approved for work. and we're following a breaking story from massachusetts this noon. a plane has just landed on a

highway up there. you're looking at the scene live near boston. the private plane landed in mansfield, massachusetts. no word on what forced the pilot to make the emergency landing. the raging wildfires in california show no sign of letting up. teri okita has the latest. >> the massive wildfire is within 15 miles of downtown los angeles. >> it's treacherous and i wish i could be more optimistic. >> battling triple-digit temperatures and low humidity, it could be weeks before they can contain the largest blaze. the fires have scorched dozens of homes and threatened thousands more. firefighters have rescued some but are urging people to get out while they can.

>> it's going to be suicide if people stay in the areas. >> crews are racing to save as many homes as possible. it's proving to be an uphill battle. >> we worked real hard to make this a pretty neat place. >> reporter: this family lost everything. nearly two dozen homes in the neighborhood burned to the ground. >> it's a beautiful place to raise kids. that era is over. >> the flames are 30 feet tall. >> reporter: so far the fires have burned an area larger than san francisco and las vegas combined. the crews probably won't get the upper hand until the scorching heat subsides. there is a 20% chance of thunderstorms in the area this afternoon. that could be a bad thing because the storm would bring 40-mile-per-hour winds that would fan the flames.

quiet a contrast in maryland. we're in the midst of a considerably cooler weak. take a look outside on the first day of september. is it time to haul out the light jacket or the sweater? another major storm is brewing in the tropics. what a beautiful day. our weather for the next five days, a chance of a shower on sunday. call it frankly beautiful towards the labor day holiday weekend. our attention needs to go down to the caribbean. we are looking at a tropical low, about 300 miles east of the vacation islands. in the national hurricane center, at any moment within the next couple of days, that tropical low could become erica. interest in the united states

virgin islands and puerto rico. before you think it would favor another atlantic event, there's a lot of steering currents, both water and air and there's a whole lot of ocean in general that could affect the movement of this tropical low. so we'll keep a keen eye down to the south. and just understand the tropics have gone active on us again. we may be welcoming erica. hopefully not to the united states. our weather is gorgeous. details coming up shortly. as forecasters keep an eye on the atlantic. the pacific is bracing for hurricane jimena. shelters are being put up and resorts are boarding up windows.

2007. he admitted to acting as a peeping tom and exposing himself to young girls. he testified he used lcd and cocaine as sexual stimulants. friends of garrido paint a different picture. >> i feel that she's probably even more responsible than she is. we know he had serious problems. everyone has thought something was wrong with it. for her to go along this -- >> garrido and his wife have pleaded not guilty to kidnapping and abuse of dugard. she was kept hidden inside the backyard behind a complex of sheds and tents. we're getting a peek at the way the madoffs lived.

where it's cooler around the james bay region, we saw overnight lows and clear skies very fall like. look at this. ocean city at 62 degrees this morning with the northerly flow. 57 in downtown baltimore. a big dome of high pressure funneling that breeze out of the north and it's governing our weather for the next few days. the interesting thing about the high is depending on where it goes offshore, that will determine the labor day weekend outlook. it's possible a low -- not a tropical low -- but an area >> low pressure garden variety forms and moves up the coast. we could have a chance of showers from baltimore and north. another beautiful night, 52 degrees. tomorrow mostly sunny, pleasant, with a high of 78 degrees. and again, that high is going

prostate screenings are being called into question. according to a new study, prostate screenings may do more harm than good. researchers say that prostate cancer screenings are a double edged sword, catching serious cancers in a few but causing needless worry and expense for a majority of men. they urge doctors to inform men of all the risks. it doesn't take a lot of cigarette smoke or pollution to
