drama and tears at the vmas early this monday morning, september 14th, 2009. captioning funded by cbs good monday morning. i'm maggie rodriguez along with jeff glor. you can stay if you have no kanye tsh like outburst this morning. >> i would never steal the microphone from you. outrageous. >> we'll talk more about what happened at the vmas when kanye west interrupted taylor swift's speech. >> and also how beyonce saved the day. good for her. >> we should tell that you julie is on assignment and harry is off because he may, he likely has h1n1 flu. he has spoken with doctors, including our own dr. jennifer ashton, he's got a fever, he has other symptomses that point in

7:04 am
end. >> that's just -- it's a very sad thing to have happen here at the university. so -- sorry. >> i mean i really tried to remain as hopeful as possible throughout. i certainly didn't think it would end in the way that it did. i think it's just incredibly gruesome. >> reporter: the discovery came on the same day le had been scheduled to be married on long island new york to her college sweetheart you can jonathan widawsky. her florest last saw her september 3rd. >> holding annie, it consists ever four dozen rose which is we chose for her because roses were her favorite. >> reporter: such a tragic ending. the focus now finding the person responsible. police would not say whether they have any prime suspects. meanwhile, we are told that the only people who have access to the area of the building where
7:05 am
the body was found are those with yale university identification. maggie? >> randall pinkston in new haven, thank you. joining us from sacramento is jennifer simpson, thank you so much for taking the time. good morning. >> good morning. >> i'd like to ask your reaction when you heard about how the search for annie ended. >> well, just like most of her colleagues and friends, i haven't been able to sleep much or rest the past several days. and i was actually contacted by one of the cbs reporters who was in contact with me about today and broke the news to me and he was actually doing some shopping and just broke down in tears in the middle of the store and had to be consoled by individuals around me. and it truly is very very sad.

and just my heart goes out to john and annie's family and john's family and all her friends. >> and for this discovery to come on what would have been her wedding day -- >> yes. >> -- how much was she looking forward to this momentous occasion in her life? >> annie has been planning this this wedding for over a year with john and she was very excited. she's been doing a countdown to her wedding day and she was doing weather patterns to make sure that the weather would be perfect on her wedding day. and she just wanted everything to be perfect, everything down to table napkins, to flowers, and just -- annie was very very excited about this day. >> and the relationship with her fiance do you know him? >> i don't know is a wonderful person.
7:07 am
he is very mild mannered very soft and well spoken. but very fun. and both of them were very much in love with each other. i'm very heartbroken for john and -- sorry. >> it's okay. i understand this is difficult. you can think of anything in hindsight that annie may have said that's now a red flag? was she worried about her safety worried about anything concerned about anyone who might hurt her? >> no. annie was friendly and cordial with everybody and she was a people person. she loved people. she loved life. and we just can't imagine anybody wanting to harm annie or -- and with regards to her
7:08 am
safety, if she were concerned about it she would have said something to someone and they would have known. john would have known. family would have known. friends would have known. annie, you know she protected herself and, you know, she -- annie walking around it's not -- annie always made sure she was safe. she doesn't walk around at night by herself and if she had to work late she would make sure that somebody could come pick her up or walk with her. >> all right. jennifer simpson, thank you so much and we're sorry for your loss. >> thank you very much. joining us now from washington is criminal profiler pat brown. good morning, pat. we talked about this on friday. now that we have seen how this case has progressed what do you make of it? >> well, i'm not surprised actually. it was very unlikely she had left the building since they had
7:09 am
looked at all the videotapes. there was no way that she was any kind of run away owing bride. a lot of times people say, pat, are you anti-victim because you said that woman shouldn't have been out jogging at night or shouldn't get drunk and go home with a strirng, no i'm just trying to warn women. but annie's friends said nothing foomish in her life. she was like the perfect, perfect person if he were a mom i'd lover her for a daughter. it's actually this one makes me cry. it's really depressing. . she did nothing wrong except go to work. so my guess is the only fault she could have is that she was too nice that she was too sweet, and that somebody that she worked with she didn't realize that they were obsessing over her. that's what my guess is in this. i don't see a serial killer, i see a guy who thought he was sbigtsed to cher and angry that she was picking somebody else. and he took out the anger on her and i bet she never saw it coming because she was just too nice a person. >> if you are in charge of the investigation, what do you do
7:10 am
now? >> well, i think they've got -- they said they have a lot of evidence and this occurred in the building it didn't go out of the building, so what we have is all the evidence is there. the bloody clothing they found, i'm guessing if it's related to this crime is the perpetrator's clothing and that's why it was stuffed up there in the ceiling tile, which would be fantastic because will would be evidence on that clothing perhaps dna from the person operator so they'll at least be able to put this creep away. but they're going to be looking at people she knew well, somebody she worked with a professor, another student, but somebody who knew her schedule, knew where she was and that she wouldn't have been afraid of when she was in the lab. and that's why she wasn't aware that she was in any danger. >> all right, pat brown, thanks so much. >> thanks maggie. dave price is off today, so long any quinn from the saturday "early show" is here with our first check of the weather. good morning everybody. let's take a look at the weather out there because for portions of the dakotas all the way through the midwest right into the northeast,#### it's just a picture perfect beautiful day

good morning to you. >> good morning. >> before we talk about wall street, i'd like to ask you how you are doing personally because i'm sure that our viewers are curious. it's been 18 months since the scandal. how are you different today? >> well, i think you -- i've learned hugh minute i've learned a sechbs caring again, focusing on family moo wife, my wonderful three daughters. that is what matters most an i will say that being in government, being in positions where you make decisions can sometimes affect one's sense of judgment and certainly i focused order that a great deal, focused on the family and been trying to contribute in other ways about. >> we've seen picture of you and your wife. it seems as though things are going well. does she believe in forgive and forget? >> i think it would be better to ask her that but i think i am fortunate to have an angel for a wife who has been spectacular and three daughters likewise who are wonderful and the center of our lives. and what more can one ask for? >> what is the key to getting over something like this?
7:17 am
>> it is forgiveness it is me focusing on family on what matters most. and i think as the world goes by and as you see the headlines day in and day out, that continue almost regardless of who is where, maybe you begin to realize who matters most is that circle around you. it sounds like hallmark card and i've often said maybe the hark mark cards, maybe they're right and maybe that's the reason they sell so much. >> the young lady that you were involved with was in the news yesterday. i want to ask you about something she said. 14e7d she wishes you well if you decide to jump back into politics. >> i guess -- >> what are your feelings towards her? >> well, one has to just hope -- forgive and hope everybody moves on in life and does well. >> i'd like to ask but that rumored run for politics. you can please settle this once and for all? >> i have said. i've said i'm not getting back into politics. there are many way this is life to contribute many ways to be part of a community, to participate whether it is teaching which is what i'm doing now i'm thrilled, i'm
7:18 am
teaching to write to be active in charitable endeavors. so many ways to participate and in deed if you look back over the sweep of history, really what matters most is community and those who contribute in so many ways other than what are perhaps the most prominent in terms of publicity, but really what matters much more is the other means of participation. that's what i'm doing. p. >> when you were gufr you are a he will cracked down on wall street. here we are a year after the collapse of lehman. do you think we handled things the reet way in. >> we handled at the moment of crisis, those in positions of authority did what they needed to do, did which was to put an enormous amount of money in it to the system. but as i've said repeatedly, that was easy part. the easy part was printing money, taking taxpayer money and giving it to institutions. institutions that had failed terribly terribly. they fundamentally vie lamted their obligation to the public and their shareholders in to government. the hard part is what follows and that is reforming the system
7:19 am
and creating jobs. and in each of those critical areas, we are not doing well. we have not reformed the system. we still have a system based upon institutions that are too wig to fail institutions that haven't received billions in-keyed, one could argue trillions of taxpayer dollars are not investing that money back this to the system to create jobs for the future. we have a regulatory system that has utterly some disarray the regulatory agencies that led us down the first time the sec, the fed and people should focus much more on the fed and the new york fed in particular as institutions that failed and the occ and the ots, all the others they're squabbling among themselves over power and yet these are the very institutions often with the same people in karnlg who failed us before about. why? not because they lacked power, they lacked the will power, they lacked the intellectual rig or to do what needed to be done and we have an economy that is bleeding jobs. so president obama who is doing what can he do, needs to push a
7:20 am
fundamental reform system needs to push a job creation system and that unfortunately is where we are lagging. >> if he comes here today and pushes for everyone more government oversight, do you think that will be a mistake? >> it's not a mistake, but what i've said is that there was not inadequate power. the sec had all the you power it needed. it chose not to use it. the federal reserve bank had all the power it needed but they perhaps most egleenlg yusly at all utterly failed to do what needed to be country a that was the problem. >> governor spitzer, thank you. we appreciate your expertise. we'll be right back. you're watching "the early show" on cbs. >> announcer: this portion of "the early show" sponsored by lendingtree.com. control your financial destiny, get started at the all-new lending tree.com.

one of them have been threatened with death or the other type of thing, the rape, whatever else they've been threatened with. the sheriffs in the jail there have to keep them apart from the rest. and even when and if they go to prison, they will have to be kept in isolation because that will be the big worry, that someone will try to murder them. >> according from an associated press article this morning here talking aut phillip garrido, again and again he claimed to have found god to a woman he'd abducted and was about to rape to the judge who sentenceded him to 50 years behind bars for the crime, and later to business clients and neighbors in antioch, california. can we expect him to continue to talk about god as why he did this? >> you you know i've got to tell you, within would think quietly he may talk about that, but i've got to think that the attorneys in court are not going to let him especially today say anything. and then if and when they do get it a trial, if he were to testify that will fall on deaf ears with juries. they will turn off to that

and forget the egg, we'll just cook bacon this morning. we'll put bacon in everything. how can that be bad? doc willoughby will show us some great new bacon dishes. but first cbs is launching the first video in print promotion. it's in entertainment weekly you open it it up and you see a full ad and it's got all our fall lineup all our best show and then there's a little tv screen. and you let it load and it plays. watch this. let's show a little video. >> it represents a resolution in the distribution of scientific knowledge. pressing that first button will summarize a short -- >> who better than sheldon from
8:32 am
the big bang theory to explain how it works. you hope it and you have a choice of which show you want to preview. >> maggie rodriguez. >> that's not one of them. not in prime time about. >> eventually. >> and the other thing is it's a little bit loud, so if you're like in a library, don't do it. but if you're in a taxi or at home -- >> you can still watch cbs programming. >> of course. a first ever for entertainment weekly and cbs. >> we'll head inside now and check in with russ at the news desk. >> that's very cool. good morning, guys. connecticut police say they found a body they believe is missing yale graduate student annie le. the body was found yesterday hidden inside a wall of the building where le worked and was last seen. she disappeared last week and was set to be married to her college sweetheart yesterday. after a summer break, the trial of amanda knox resumed this morning in italy.
8:33 am
the american student is accused of killing her roommate. alan good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. the trial of amanda knox enters its most decisive stage this morning, the examination of dna evidence that both the prosecution and defense holds the key to either conviction or acquittal. the prosecution's case against knox and her italian former boyfriend is built largely on a sample of knox's dna found on a knife and a bra belonging to the victim but the bra sample came to light 47 days after the murder. and the dna expert hired by the defense team will challenge the validity of the evidence and the police handling of both samples. knox's father is convinced alledgedly mishandled dna samples will reinforce his daughter's alibi that she was with her boyfriend in his apartment when the murder was committed. >> within the room in which meredith lost her life, it's
8:34 am
literally there's no speck of amanda in that room no fingerprint, no blood, no dn the a anywhere. >> reporter: knox who has been this jail almost 600 days already told acquaintance in court she was doing okay despite 90 degree temperatures in an unair conditioned prison cell. judgment is expected sometime in november unless the dna expert wants to reexamine all the evidence, which could add another 06 days on to the proceedings. >> alan thank you very much. it is now 8:34. and lonnie quinn is outside with our final check of the weather. this orange that we've got on this side of the plaza. this is all part of the crohn's and colitis foundation of america. apparently stacey brown you'll chat with me because there is something called the team challenge. what is that? >> it's a marathon training
8:35 am
program training people to run or walk 13.1 miles. >> this is your big fund-raiser. how much money do you hope to raise? >> $4 million for crohn's and colitis. >> which affects an awful lot of people. about about how many? >> 1.4 million people in america have this disease. >> so get out there and raise some money. let's talk about some weather because the toughest weather for your day today will be around the mississippi valley. we also see some showers and storms kicking in around the western ridge of the rocky, but elsewhere, it is just beautiful today. i'm talking a banner day here as we start to wind up summer, but if we look a at our day tomorrow things will be changing a little bit. but really the big change will come on wednesday for the northeast. tomorrow you're still swachled by the down pours. around the gulf coast, scattered late day storms will be kicking in around the rocky >> good morning. some of that shower activity to the south will move our way wednesday and thursday.
8:36 am
this day and tomorrow though, just beautiful. high of 85, about 67 right now. tonight clear and 62 is the overnight low. maybe a little fog late sunday -- monday and a high of 85 degrees tomorrow and then wednesday and thursday a little rain and clearing out starting friday. saturday partly sunny and 76. all right. the squeak skiy wheel gets the grease. >> hi mom, hi de. >> announcer: this portion of "the early show" spoken ordinary by v 8 v-fusion. 100% vegetable and fruit juice. >> statement the toughest thing is to mow when to butt in or let your child handle their own mess. here with some advice is ann marie
8:37 am
marie. coy find it's tough because i want my daughter to be independent, but i don't want to let her down either. >> it's true. it's really hard to mow when to speak up when to step back. >> so let's create a couple of scenarios. if you feel that your child or your child feels like they're getting too much home work would should you butt in? >> not before you've country your own home work. see if your child is behind closed doors playing with the dog or listening to his ipod or whether he's actually doing work. and if he is actually doing the work but is still struggling then consider going in and approaching the teacher, but only then. >> the next scenario if another adult lectures your child, what should do you? had. >> i would want to step in right away. >> i think it depends. in-it geblds whether it's a matter of your child's safety. that's the big issue here. i think if another adult is talking to your child on the play ground about doing something more safely, then the good idea is to be present for that and listen to what the adult has to say and then reaffirm it.
8:38 am
if the other hand the person is speaking too strongly to your child, there's nothing wrong with stepping in and saying politely i'm the mom, nice to meet you and i can take it from here. >> what if the adult says something to your child that you really disagree with? how do you go back and change that? >> i think this is a really tricky situation because you don't want to be seen arguing withanother adult in front of your child, so definitely take the child away from the situation and then have a private conversation where you just adjust the information that your child is getting. >> what is f.f your child is not invited to the big party? what do you do? >> i think it's a really heart brebreaking situation, but it's also important not to try to butt into social situations like that. but on the other hand, you also want to do something nice for your child, do something nice together. >> in other words, don't call the parent and say you didn't invite my child but do talk to your child because i'm sure you'd want to explain --
8:39 am
>> i think you should console and, again, do something different that kay. and if it's something that you notice is going on and you think might be a longer term problem, have a conversation with the teacher. don't go calling the parent of the other child and embarrass your child in that way, but maybe just see if the teacher has noticed anything at cool school. >> what if your child is being bullied? >> that is a big one and a lot of states everyone have legislation about bullying, so teachers are highry ryly aware of that, too. i would say give it some time and watch. if your child's safety is not at risk then give her the chance to actually solve the problem for herself. and also try and help her out by giving her the skills to solve the problem. so rehearse the situation even. go through some things that she might say to the bully if it's verbal bullying. if you're there and you're actually witnessing the bullying, then i'd interrupt, but with something like hey, it's snack time come on don't talk to your child about it in front of the bully. >> if your boys come home and say, mom, something said this really mean something to me,
8:40 am
what do you tell them? >> evening thild just ask them to talk about it and tell them why that child might have been thinking like that, that some people -- that children are all different and come from different backgrounds and say different thing, but to just stand up for themselves and be proud of who they are. >> thank you so much anne-marie o'neill. appreciate it. when parents should butt in is by going to our website, earlyshow.cbsnews.com. now hear's jeff. sir elton john is hoping he can follow in the foot steps of madonna and angelina jolie. he says he wants to adopt a 14 month old ukranian boy. but john faces an uphill legal battle. elizabeth palmer reports. >> reporter: at 62 elton john says he's finally ready to become a dad. to a little 14 month old boy me on a trip to promote his aids charity in ukraine. elton john was in the or fan imagine to donate a piano then later with his partner, david, holding l event v, he dropped

not. a lot of bacon. we'll be
8:46 am
8:47 am
from appetizer it is to even yes, dessert, we are cooking an entire meal with way con and dock willoughby is here with a heart stopping menu. i hope not. why does bacon have to be so good? >> because it's pork and it's cured and it's got a lot of fat in it. so how bad complain be? bacon is without doubt one of the world's great tastes. but it also because it's so rich and has such a distinctive flavor butt a little bit of it some to a dish and it brings it up to a new level. so we'll do a little bit of cooking with bacon. >> first we're making a savory bread pudding? >> yes, we start with a little custard which is just milk and
8:48 am
eggs and cream just to boost it up. >> because bacon wasn't enough fat. >> exactly. this is a celebration. bacon calls for a celebration. so give it a little different twist, we'll add some arugala to it. could you also add spin afternoon. and then we'll just wilt it. don't want to cook it just wilt it because otherwise it's too much volume for the dish. you can add this bacon. >> i have to take a bite to make sure bacon is okay. >> bacon is always okay. and then we have -- you can use any swiss cheese for this. and then we've cut up some country bread. now, this is a great dish for brunch. you can put this all together the night before and then just stick it in the oven just 45 minutes before you want to seat it. so it's totally make ahead. just stir that all up.
8:49 am
and then when the arugula is wilted we'll tut that in and mix it up. >> so that was just a very quick -- >> just a little bit jaw. and then lift it all up goes in the pan. and then if you're ready to cook it it, you can put it in the oven or keep it overnight an then just put it in the oven in the morning. >> how long do you cook it? >> it cooks for 30 minutes covered and then you uncover it just for some tenten minutes so you have some nice browning on top. >> and look what it looks like afterwards. >> we have one in the oven that we just finished. so we'll bring that one out. >> ooh lcht a la. jeff want to see? >> we've also got a few other
8:50 am
bacon dishes here, we have bacon meatloaf. >> so whatever meatloaf recipe you have, you can -- >> add some chopped bacon into it. absolute pi. these are bacon and cheddar toast. and not leave out desert, we have a frozen peanut baututter pie with candied bacon. >> because bacon alone is not enough. >> who thinks of that? >> i think alicehought of that. >> and for lunch, tofu sprouts. >> that's right. and actually over here bacon crisps which are in the 1942 issue. and they're basically bacon temporo. >> so you just breaded the bacon and fried it. >> yes. >> hey, lonnie you have to taste this. so you put just the candied bacon on top? >> it's mixed in, as well. >> candied pay conbacon.
8:51 am
that's like putting whipped cream on a prime rib. >> and what a gr g. idea that hib. and then you just head to the gym. >> how do you candy bacon? >> cook it halfway and then put sugar on it and it caramelizes. >> doc, thank you so much. and of course we'll put all these sizzling bacon recipes on the website. it's earlyshow.cbsnews.com. >> so i made burgers last night. basic old burgers on the grill and weed a some extra bacon and i chopped it up into little bits and put it in there. >> and didn't it make it better? >> absolutely. >> and may i share my bacon experience of the weekend? i just cookeded bacon and used the bacon fat to cook the rest of my stuff. i didn't actually use the bacon. >> i don't have a bacon moment. >> listen to him more than us. have a great day, everybody. your local news is next.
