the first ever hs hybrid, only from lexus. dick: monday just after 4:00 in the afternoon, the finals for the men, delayed a day because of the rain over the weekend. we're set now for the men's championship battle. let's go down to mary jo fernandez. mary jo: thanks, dick, with juan marine del potro. you're getting ready to go out there for your first major final. what's going through your mind? >> it's a great moment for me and i hope to do my best and of course try to win. mary jo: you dominated rafael nadal yesterday. you played roger in paris, a close five-setter. already it take to beat roger today? >> i have to do everything perfect, play much better than last tournament. it will be tough. mary jo: good luck out there. >> thank you.

mary jo: roger federer, going for six u.s. opens in a row. major title number 16. has dropped one set this year at the u.s. open. roger, you're playing six in a row. your sixth different opponent. how have you been able to remain a constant? >> just try hard, you know, a lot of practice. the stuff you don't see, i guess. but i've played a lot of great matches here on arthur ashe and it's a pleasure to be back. mary jo: del potro is playing in his first. how much will you rely on your experience in this final? >> oh, we'll see. it's dangerous at the same time as good for me. he's got nothing to lose and i'm sure he's going to give it all he has and same for me and we'll see the outcome. mary jo: good luck. >> thank you. dick: the alley of champions with all the photographs of the

great players that have won the united states championship, and now the entrance in front of the 23,500 seat arthur ashe stadium court. >> juan marine del potro and roger federer! dick: and good afternoon, everyone. dick enberg joined by mamplee -- hall of famer john mcenroe and mary carillo. federer has produced some sublime tennis again. john: first of all he looked really wound up in that interview, which is sort of scary. it's hard to come up with something that hasn't been said or see something special. we tried to put together a package that would be spectacular, even by roger's standards. this is why it's going to be difficult to beat del potro. you see that? ok. this one here, a little drop

shot. this is a mis-hit and it still goes in the court. how about this for defense? the strike zone, normally you want to get the ball in front of you. that's behind him and he's lucky on top of it. but this one topped everything. take a look at this shot. this is the hardest i've ever seen this shot hilt. dick: even his reaction was great. john: normally it takes six months or year to find that type of package with a player. that was his last match. dick: human highlights. how about this 20-year-old from argentina? juan martin del potro. he realizes he faces a monumental assignment today. mary: he played him to five sets in the french open at the semis and he's only lost once all summer long. he's a great hard court player. he took out rafa nadal in the

last round, the only manwho's ever beaten the great spaniard three times in one season. he's shown his good form not just here but all throughout the summer. he beat roddick twice 24 summer on the hard courts. he's had a great, great season. he is a true force on these hard courts. it's not that big a surprise he's in the final. it could be good. dick: del potro pass improved his ace, serving ability incredibly. he's tall, a little something different for federer. coming up live, we'll see arguably the greatest player ever to grim a racket and one of the most promising new stars in the game. ♪ america my home sweet home ♪ dick: just moments ago, "god bless america" apeand by a jet flyover, as this normally staged men's final played for the second straight year on monday. that hasn't happened back-to-back for 40 years, but weather had its hand. fans with this treasured ticket will eventually fill this stadium. a late arriving crowd on a monday afternoon. federer just oozing confidence. this is his play yard. 51-4, his all-time record.

won five consecutive u.s. world championships. john: amazing, dick, that he was concerned at key biscay in the final hard court season, saying thank god that was over so he could work on his conditioning. won the french and then wimbledon. his road has been relatively easy. where he started to step it up was robredo. soderling, he got tight at the end but look what happened at the semis. what a match with djokovic the other day. dick: del potro, if he wins today, would be the tallest grand slam major champion ever today, would be the tallest grand slam major champion ever at 6'6". and i'm a pc. mac, it's been kind of a rough quarter. so i brought in a trainer to get me back on top of my game.

with a championship caliber day. 78 degrees, a little wind. let's look at juan martin del potro's trip to the final. john: he had a good jofplgt excellent jog. he destroyed nadal. dick: nadal, admitting he was not 100% with that abdominal pull. federer serves to open the championship. john: if del potro can get that a level that he played with nadal, this is going to be very close. the question is the nerves.

and playing back to back. that should affect the older federer more than it would a 20-year-old. dick: federer can identify with the youth of his opossibility. he was about 11 -- of his opponent. he was about 11 months older when he won his first tournament, the 2003 wimbledon. potro won't be 21 until later this month. john: as you would expect in his first final, he is very uptight this first game. mary: the great strength of the allergy tine's game has been his return game. he's gotten 82% of returns in play, better than anyone in the

tournament by far. dick: so the champion with an easy hold to open this monday championship final. there are so many things, we could go on and on about what is at stake for federer as he continues to march through tennis history. six straight u.s. open titles. only one other man in 100 years did, that tilden. bjorn borg winning 41 in a row at wimbledon. rod raver hit his true caliber grand slam in 199. no one has won three straight majors in the same year since. that's what federer is came a-- aiming to do today. most importantly, a 16th major

title to move two ahead of title to move two ahead of sampras. john: del potro's serve is so much better than it was six months ago. and he needs it now. when you're nervous your legs are a little heavy. mary: both play well at the net but federer has been coming in twice as much as del potro, so del potro will be facing a net game he did not have to face against rafael nadal in the semis. john: very deliberate out there, as usual for del potro.

john: second serve looked long. that's why roger feels like he got burned there. decided to play on. dick: an indication of how much del potro has improved his service. we look at our own chase review. it did catch the line. roger would have been wrong had he challenged. last year del potro, the entire season, 295 aces aces. coming into the match today, 573. doubled it up, so he has added some punch. john: you'll notice when he came up on the ball there, right in the middle of the court. take waddell del's angle. he keeps the volley deep enough. and see it skid there?

he couldn't get as much on it as he wanted. beautiful angle here. obviously more relaxed at the start and moving better because of that. dick: tipping his strategy early. mary: he's never lost to juan martin del potro in six tries. he's a lot more comfortable with this matchup. he's never lost in a major to anyone but rafael nadal. three times this year. dick: del potro, in the first five meetings facing federer, did not win a set. but he did at the french open back in june go five sets and led two sets to one and it was 3-3 in the final set before he side -- seemed to tire and

federer raced away. john: and the bleach maybe not quite there yet. this is the first time i think he's come into a major thinking he could win the whole thing. mary: trying to beat rafa and roger in the same major. first of all, that's never been done. it's been done a couple of times in other tournaments. that's like clijsters having to beat venus and serena to win this major last night. john: that's such a smart return. you see roger step in. he knows that del potro is tight so he's going to get a pretty easy second serve. already at break point. dick: 90-mile-per-hour on that second ball. john: he hasn't got an first serve in yet. dick: he hit the serve and that forehand with some authority. john: that's his key, obviously. to take control off the serve.

dick: languid in style is del potro. no hurry. eases his way into the performance. 134-mile-per-hour miss. john: still looking to shake the nerves out of his system. dick: father robert federer. john: you only add more pressure by missing all these first serves in this game.

champion putting a lot of pressure on in this first-service game. mary: that's going to be a big challenge for del potro. he's a pretty good long rally player but he doesn't want to do it on his own serve. he wants to do it on this guy's. dick: he can dig out of this game. it would be a great boost for him to know that he can deny four break points. long service game. mary: your mentality against federer has to be to stay with him, to try to take a match like this to tiebreakers. dick: let ball threw off the rhythm of the ball and mistimed by del potro. joirm that should give him more

time, if anything. the quality of play is so high, roger has come out with, combined with the fact that he's never been in this position before, he's really struggling to get off the mark here. john: whoa! mary: is he any good? he loves this. he loves looking at the scoreboard and watching himself in the replays. he does it on the changeovers

dick: a lot of folks that don't normally watch tennis, this one of the four majors. starts in australia, then the french open, wimbledon and the u.s. completing the season. you're looking at a man that many feel is the greatest to ever play the sport. it's exciting, whether you know a lot about the game or not, is to see someone who is a superstar. on the line. jake gearn indicating that del potro has challenged. we'll have our official chase review. john: he just doesn't know what's hit him yet. he plays slow as it is and he's

before. he'll get better, i can assure you of that. mary: here's the challenge -- del potro has got to play his best regardless of what roger is doing. he's got to be prepared to do that and then he's got to be prepared that it won't be enough and then he's got to keep it up, in case federer drops down a little bit. john: he said he needed to step it up a gear with nadal and he may be right. as well as he played yesterday, nadal didn't exude that confidence that we're feeling from federer. mary: if they both play their best federer wins. the challenge is how do i make federer not play his best? no one here has been able to figure that out for five years.

dick: federer hasn't played favorites. they've sent the best of the championship the last five years at him. he's taken care of hewitt, roddick, djokovic. now del potro. mary: and now that he's completed his career grand slam, he's playing with less pressure and more confidence. let's add that to the equation. dick: 3-1, federer in the lead opening set. good service game there for juan martin del potro. john: as well as federer has played -- or djokovic, last night, dick, in the semis. i never got the feeling that he believed he was going to win the match and federer sensed that. he didn't give off like in the third set that he believed he could come back. that's one of the things del potro's got to at least show federer, that he actually

believes he can pull this off. john: his movement has been exposed early. to me that's nerves. but he should have been able to bounce back pretty easily from that match yesterday. out on a court a couple of hours. he's 20. he's just not flowing yet. that's what's frustrating. dick: showing him the total

variety of his game. john: and this ball was not struck cleanly enough. he hit it with better depth yesterday, more on it. mary: this is the shot that helped roger federer win the french open. he'd never liked going to that. he always felt like that was a concession. hitting drop shots. he always liked to power through the ball then he made such great use of it and then at wimbledon as well he did it against andy roddick. he'd resisted that shot for so long. that forehand drop shot especially. dick: double fault for 30-30. mary: everyone is so wary of his forehand. it's a perfect change-up, isn't it? just slide under it, drop it

over the net. john: del potro stands way back, as you can see off the first serve especially. and roger is going to move in, as you can see. he's been aggressive. nadal wasn't. i think he's better off standing a little closer, like he's doing on this side. john: that was close. he should challenge that. >> del potro is challenging the call on the left baseline. the ball was called out. john: i think you'll see that ball was in. dick: there's the chase review.

john: just by holding here he'll keep it close and there's a chance that federer's level will drop. he'll start to get more confidence, even if he loses his first set, so that he plays better in the second. dick: saves a break point, 4-2. here's the cbs flomotion. remember that great point by federer? look at the court coverage. john: you can make the argument that he's moving better than ever have have. it's absolutely amazing. mary: that was a 43 1/2-foot sprint for the winner. john: that's sprinting and doing something rather spectacular with the shot. dick: we'll have to rename that

dick: to the first row behind federer. mary: in spite of the fact that roger federer is only serving at 36%, he hasn't yet faced break point. that tells you a little bit about the quality of his second serve and the rest of his game. john: he makes it looko easy. that first point of the game he played some defensive slice forehands, which was the appropriate move at that time and then he sees del potro off balance here. he looks up, he's at net and he

throws a drop volley at him. he's not even close to being ready for it. mary: you just feel no tension in his body. no tension about this match. john: the wind pulled that previous shot in but yanked that one out. you can see it's moving behind del potro right to left. this is about as bad a start as he could hope for. dick: triple set point. john: that would be a concern as well for juan martin. dick: meanwhile, federer, when he wins the first set, 167-4.

a couple of saves. here's a third set point for roger federer. john: he's got some wind behind him so this is an important game for him to hold. he has a better chance breaking from this side of the court. john: you'd better hit a good lob if you're going to hit one over a guy 6'6". he brings him in deliberately and roger had a good chance there. i'm surprised he didn't take a big swing at that.
