5:02 pm
now. i know it's difficult not to give it off but he's got to find a way to do this if he wants to make this a match. because roger is feeding off that as well. dick: it's not his nature to be too demonstrative, del potro. it's almost as if the younger players respect roger so much, a certain amount of awe -- don't want to look too anxious or too positive against him. he is the best. john: that's a good point, dick, but that's exactly what they need to do. dick: and then a double fault to open the set. john: look at the way roger's come out. he's not even serving his best
5:03 pm
yet. this is his 10th break point already. it's one of the biggest serves in the game, this first serve. dick: the only player in the last five, six years that really has stepped on the court and looked him eye to eye has been rafael nadal. the injuries to nadal this summer, the knee tendinitis that forced him out of wimbledon. could not defend that title he earned a year about -- ago against federer. and then the abdominal strain he suffered here at the open certainly took something out of him. second double fault gives federer a set and a break here
5:04 pm
in the second and technology in motion is presented by lexus. mary? mary: when john mcenroe and the rest of us played, johnny had so much sense and feel, the sensitivity of the radioed rackets. now, of course, no one plays with wood anymore by. these rackets that are pretty much designed for power can offer a lot of touch to someone like federer. he can change the pace, the angle, the trajectory and still have the power as well with the new technology. not that you didn't have any power, john. john: thank you. [laughter] john: yeanchts how about a point that i won? i've been working for cbs for how long? the mis-hit half volley. great. looked like del potro right now. mary: sorry about that.
5:05 pm
dick: well, john, you've gone through that generation from wood to the current rackets used. you're using it on the senior tour. what about it has changed your game? john: well, i hit the serve harder than ever, dick. i have no idea where it's going but at least it's coming in hard. john: that's wide. mary: all right, john, we're trying to make it up to you here in a hurry. there. john: ok. notice that the camera is above my chest? they don't even show off my big nadal-like muscles. mary: it's going to be hard to make him happy today. john: a good match would make me happy.
5:06 pm
he's got about eight different strike zones. he can hit it up high, around his waist, low, behind him. dick: between his legs. john: exactly. eyes closed. dick: familiar times you feel he could play this game blindfolded. just knows the geometry of the game. well, there's one he didn't searight. double fault, his fourth. that's out of character for the world's number one. mary: federer feels good about coming to the back. john: such a good half volley. dick: thursday on the premiere of "survivor" there have been some bad guys before, but no
5:07 pm
one like this character. you won't believe what he pulls thursday. only cbs. john: talk all you want about strategy. compare their games. at the end of the day it's such a mental game, what's going on between the ears. this guy came out quite nervous, and roger, as he usual does, took advantage of that. and now he's gotten negative and that's sort of paralyzed him and that's why he's having trouble in the second set. dick: an awful opening gam john: he's just in a funk right now.
5:08 pm
the last guy you want to play when you're in a funk is roger federer. although i'm not sure he can be more relaxed than what we've been seeing these last few weeks. a lot of strain after breaking pete sampras' record at wimbledon and winning the french. dick: it's all gravy now, frosting, isn't it? john: career slams there. if he could win this and go for four -- it's not the calendar slam but almost like a slam, four in a row. dick: and the year started with him in tears at melbourne, as rafael nadal defeated him there. then he broke the racket and people were saying maybe this
5:09 pm
is the end for roger federer, he won't win anymore by. then he turns it around cleat complooly. this the -- completely. this the third consecutive major final. trying to make it six in a row here in new york. john: couldn't believe that wasn't a winner. dick: losing his touch. the maestro, the magician. sometimes, the little things in life feel like our biggest enemies. they can be damaged... they can be stolen. happily,

there's the american express charge card. if something you recently bought with the card breaks, it can be repaired, replaced or your account can be credited. you'll even get membership rewards points with each purchase. and peace of mind when you travel. can your card say that?
5:11 pm
dick: after that behind-the-back effort, even roger has to swallow a smile. the stakes are mighty high. you don't see players smile often in these moments, championship events, but roger is so relaxed he had a good time yesterday against djokovic and not afraid he's enjoying himself again today. john: the crowd is really pulling for del potro now to make this competitive. it looked like he had stopped playing that point when that ball was close to the baseline, then when it hit the net he decided to play on and got the winner. looked like he was going to challenge the call.
5:12 pm
challenge the call. >> fault. john: he had it measured. his footwork has not been as good as it should be and as it normally is. he's 6'6". he really needs to be in position far ball. he needs to make roger at least hit that volley. 0-15. still has not had a break point in this match, del potro. that was an example where he hit it with authority. he actually surprised roger,
5:13 pm
hit it right back at him. he had enough on it to cause the error. dick: federer, by the way, this the seventh match of the championship. he's been broken only seven times. mary: but he's still serving at 43%. i mean, this is where del potro has to step in a little bit more, cut off some of the angles that roger is using against him because he's trying to return from so far back. john: here's his chance. there's going to be a big roar if he can get this first break. he could turn this thing around.
5:14 pm
john: excellent spring in roger's legs. he's moving clearly better than del potro in this final. at least so far. he's got to go after the second serve. john: that should have been right where he wanted it. he kicked it up high at del potro. he normally handles that return pretty well. he mis-hit it.
5:15 pm
john: del potro is really disgusted with himself. he dumps that, that's his bread and butter right there. dumps it in the middle of the dumps it in the middle of the net. dick: only the 12th error from federer's end. 20 winners. 14-14 for del potro. john: he's saying he wasn't ready. >> i didn't see what happened. you were ready and then he hit the serve. >> i wasn't ready.
5:16 pm
>> but when i looked at you were ready. >> ask the ball boy. john: he's ready to return right here. he obviously saw something but he didn't put up his racket. let's see what happened. >> i heard it and i didn't know the timing because he was standing there. no, but he didn't play the point. john: he's going to get a replay here. that's -- dick: linesperson.
5:17 pm
apparently something with a gust of wind blew into that corner. john: a cup came down. dick: so at deuce, first serve. mary: did you hear roger, though? sotto voce. he said, yeah, but i hit the ace. it doesn't matter. dick: instead of the ace, now another del potro chance to another del potro chance to break. john: would be a major turnaround right now. dick: he's struggled with his serve. 41%. john: all that training he does
5:18 pm
in dubai is training off right now. because it's never easy for these guys to play two five-setters two days in a row and he looks the fresher of the two players. moving exceptionally well. as fit as ever is roger federer. dick: three deuce game on a federer serve. that's almost news. dick: they've reached the one-hour mark in this championship final. roger federer, 6-3 in the opening set and leads 2-1 in the second. del potro losing his serve in
5:19 pm
the very opening game, and despite really out of character serving percentages from federer, he's in command. john: he's fortunate he's been very sharp with the rest of his game. still has yet to be broken. that's a double. i mean, there's some wind but it's been way worse earlier. a challenge. looked to be along but roger often does this to regroup. and that ball just missed. dick: chase review indicating that it was just long. john: when it's windy you try to toss the ba maybe a little bit lower. four to six inches.
5:20 pm
but he hasn't paid any price for it yet. that's the scary part, because this isn't going to continue. dick: del potro did a good job of getting that tough serve into the court and then can't take advantage of a shot he feels he should have been able to make. and federer serves out of trouble, saves three break points. it's 3-1 in the second. let's take a look at our exxonmobil swing vision. forehand federer. john: you always use that off hand as a guide. that keeps your balance there. i always love his eyes because you see that he watches that ball until he finishes that swing. dick: the beauty of the off hand, it's almost as if it's sculpted the way it's relaxed and open. nothing tense and tight about
5:21 pm
that left hand. john: that's true, dick. because if you jerk that around or move it too quickly that throws off everything. dick: his head always so dick: his head always so stable. dick: at this stage of the championship match it's so much like what we saw just a year ago from andy murray. playing some sensational tennis to get to the finals, very average against federer. john: del potro has lost one match since wimbledon. one event in washington. he's been playing some topnotch tennis. to get to the finals here. this is bitterly disappointing so far.
5:22 pm
but if he's playing the score, he's one break down and roger hasn't served as well as he normally does. he's got to convince himself that he can get right back in this match. john: to me that's lazy, how he just served. reached for it. you don't want to take a big step. that throws off your balance to me. yet he's got a lot of reach, obviously at 6'6". mary: he's better at being tall. you got to give him that.
5:23 pm
john: i'm thinking what you're meaning is he's a much better athlete than he's showing so far as far as his movement? mary: no, i just means he's better than federer at being tall. john: so he's just taller than him? mary: yeah, he's really tall. john: so that's the one thing he's got going for him so far? mary: that's what i'm thinking. john: so he better start hitting a lot more aces. dick: the williams sisters winning their third major doubles of this year, 6-2, 6-2 earlier today. first time they've won the u.s. open doubles in 10 years.
5:24 pm
ace, but roger is not convinced. he's challenged. chase review. we'll see whether or not this was indeed a del potro ace. john: all of a sudden del potro is playing fast. he plays slower than anyone on the tour and he's just freaked out right now. dick: three lost opportunities and the last -- in the last game to break federer and now here's federer sitting on another break point. john: that serve was -- if it was in it certainly wasn't in by much.
5:25 pm
dick: oh, he missed it. john: he's coming unglued. dick: again, the respect that federer earns by his great court defense. trying to get as much as you can on what would have been a makeable shot. john: he's certainly moving well, that's for sure. and he's hitting the ball clean. there's that defense you talked about. he had the ball where he omari
5:26 pm
hand -- he wanted it, the forehand. he knows that if he gets this i -- this insurance, he'll have a two sets to love lead. dick: grew up idolizing pete sampras, did del potro. admiring safin.
5:27 pm
out of a town 100 miles out of buenos aires. a town that has produced an important number of tennis important number of tennis professionals. john: he's got to do something more with that ball. just push it back. federer is not even off the baseline yet. dick: father daniel played semipro rugby in argentina and is a veterinarian.
5:28 pm
john: see how that forehand jumps off the court. what he's capable of doing. if he can string something together here. dick: it wasn't easy but he digs out a couple of break digs out a couple of break points.
5:29 pm
5:30 pm
dick: critical hold of serve by del potro to stay juan break down here in the second set. 3-2, federer serves. john: a little fire here would do del potro some good. some good court coverage on this point. didn't look that surprised at this volley team. mary: he pumped his first --
5:31 pm
fist after this serve. if federer keeps missing a lot of first sevens, del potro has to take his chances. dick: serving 45% for the match, first serve, federer. mary: he didn't do much with that return. an 87-mile-an-hour serve. you've got to have that recognition. mary: so much slice on that shot from federer. and del potro at 6'6" --
5:32 pm
federer is skidding the ball to him then getting it high to him, up around his ears, and at this point del potro is not making the requisite adjustments he's got to make. john: i think he'd be better off taking that backhand, hitting it flatter across court. not getting himself out of position and then if roger takes his backhand up the line he can move over and take a big swing at the forehand. dick: even though federer hasn't served well, 2-3 points off his second ball. john: he's lucky del potro is only a set and a break down right now. dick: easy hold, throws in an ace, his third of the match. exxonmobil swing vision, and again we examine the form of roger federer.
5:33 pm
john: i don't think you're going to see anything there watching him serve that would get you to go, ok, the toss is too low or he's not using his legs enough or not snapping his wrist appropriately. you almost expect it, like when he really needs it he gets the big ones. but again, he doesn't feel threatened a whole lot on the second serve. so it's -- dick: that inside-out forehand has been the key weapon for del potro. in another top season and a great two weeks here in new york. he used it well in paris. had a two sets to one lead against federer.
5:34 pm
john: that's more typical of what you saw in his run to the final. dick: 133-mile-an-hour on that serve. that was his fastest of the that was his fastest of the match.
5:35 pm
dick: third double fault. four. now three in this set. two of those in the opening game that he dropped -- had 15-40, double faulted. so he's been digging out of that early hole ever since, already down a set. he finishes the game with an ace but it's still federer up a set and up a break. ♪ today ♪ must have been one of the strangest days ♪ everyone may face the same uncertainty. ♪ some would say that you won't find ♪ protecting yourself, however, requires good decisions. find strength and stability with mass mutual,

dick: welcome back live in new york, after 5:30 in the evening. there's the tournament average on the left and today's numbers for federer. john: it doesn't matter. he's winning more second-serve points than he normally does and almost as many on the first. john: it's a pretty significant
5:38 pm
difference and it's surprising that you would see that with the doubles he's thrown in and the low percentage of serves that del potro has not been able to get on the board yet. you have to play the wind, you have to be aware when the new balls come in, how they react. that safer serve becomes more effective, like that. these guys hit the ball so hard then after six, eight games, that ball is hurting. leaves its impression. right now it's really moving and del potro hasn't been able to handle the serve in this game. letting it spin away from him

5:40 pm
call. dick: yes, i thought so also. that was the end where serena williams was called for the foot fault. john: spectacular volley. this is a really good passing shot. del potro had a pretty nice look at this pass. dick: instead federer, with game point for a 5-3 lead.
5:41 pm
mary: he had designed that point just as he wanted it, federer, then just missed the kill shot. but again, a tremendous variety of spins and paces and lengths. gets back to business with a fine first serve.
5:42 pm
dick: that's wide for the double. it doesn't happen very often that you can play federer two sets and get six double faults from the world's number one. john: he's got more double faults than aces. mary: and he's under 50% and close to going up two sets to love anyway. dick: incredible opportunity he's let slip away. john: so much longer back from two sets than if he were able to get himself back into this set.
