6:12 pm
john: he's definitely going to take it to del potro here early to test him. mary: that was a series of amazing forehands from juan martin del potro. one of them federer still convinced missed wide. they called it good and this one was a clean one. he did it in the tie-break as well. his big guns started firing with great success and here was set point for del potro and again he ends it with his forehand side. dick: that's the shot making that has delivered him a couple of more titles this year. 48-11 record. he won in auckland and washington, d.c., both hard court wins.

beautiful change of speeds for federer. set up that 0-30. mary: you can hear the squeakiness of his footwork in this one. i think he's come to know he's gotten a little bit soft in that department. got himself there in time to really line up that shot. dick: the countrymen of del potro, we mentioned it yesterday, said you can beat federer. all tough do is hit it to his backhand. john: the last guy that beat federer here six years ago. dick: moves to 0-40 to break

6:44 pm
absolutely right, that way too much time had gone by and they've got to do something about that rule. these guys talk to their coaches. they might as well call up here and ask what we think. mary: you know what i feel about this whole challenge system. it's so flawed. but he cursed at the chair umpire a couple of times in this last changeover. dick: it wasn't venomous, however. mary: it was cursing, what do you mean? john: what set him off is the umpire telling him to be quiet, which is absurd to say that to federer. mary: roger had an answer for mary: roger had an answer for that. dick: the wind playing havoc with that entire point, and del potro dumps it in the net. john: which is all the more reason why youave to keep up your focus and intensity. it's footwork too.

sets to one lead. dick: another big forehand. john: he found the range of that. he sets himself up with some spin and then when he's got the look he wants he just flattens it out. you see there. gets it set up and it's goodbye. dick: people joining us at the start of the match, first hour say, how can he be number six in the world, now number five? now, the last hour, you know why. what a weapon he has with that forehand.
6:47 pm
john: he's got a lot more than that at only 20 years old. dick: a lot of upside, isn't there? john: there sure is. john: still a tricky spot here. second serve, 30-30, 4-5. dick: you saw it coming, didn't you? john: federer's got set point. dick: a double fault sets upset point for federer. 17th break point of the match. for the swiss maestro.

is so important; it's dedicated to producing ten thousand new math and science teachers, so we can inspire today's tinkerers to become tomorrow's much-needed innovators. dick: del potro had not double faulted the entire set and then two in a row at 30-30 and 30-40 to give federer a two sets to one lead. mary: he spent the whole changeover with his head in his hands. john: that's not surprising given the fact that he'd worked his way into a winning position, a break up in the third, 4-3. just to let it slip away on two double faults. that's not easy to overcome. mary: now he's talking to his coaches. that's what aggravated roger, that he consulted his coaches about the challenge so late.
6:51 pm
switching sides, almost. john: well, he's not the first guy. mary: everybody -- the challenge, everyone cheats. john: it's a joke. mary: that's what i've been saying. it's a joke. everyone cheats. it's illegal coaching. john: if it's the umpire -- isn't it umpire's thing to do something about it? mary: have you ever seen it? john: i'm just saying. mary: they're cheeth. dick: 1,oo 2, 1,003, the moment is gone.
6:52 pm
mary: that is illegal to consult your coach. what else can you call that? it's in the rule book. dick: that one doesn't go over, 30-30. john: i'm calling how did you see it? did you see it in or out? i'll tell you one thing that will help him. somehow he gets off early here. this could get away from him quick. dick: federer with a little extra jice on that shot that -- juice on that shot that del potro tried to volley. john: that was a great approach shot by del potro. roger did real well with that forehand. mary: who among these two is moving better, winning the big points? taking the sets? it's his 10th ace.
6:53 pm
dick: bill tilden won six in a row, 1920 through 1925. on this exact day 80 years ago, september 14, after his six-win streak, he didn't win a couple of years and then in 1929 won his seventh u.s. title, beat francis hunter 6-4 in the fifth. no one else in more than 100 years of the united states championship, other than tilden and federer, have won five and federer, have won five straight.
6:54 pm
6:55 pm
how much tougher he'll be to beat. john: that's not a good call by del potro there, throwing in another drop shot. dick: federer has gone through the test of the emotional energy that is consumed in these championships, especially playing five-setters back-to-back as they have. del potro-nadal yesterday. federer today. he misses wide, so here's two break points for federer.
6:56 pm
john: remember a set and a break -- almost a double break down and 4-3 serving for it. the momentum swing that has just taken place, these almost feel like match points right now. dick: that is two saved breakers. back to deuce. john: some positive energy. two good serves and forehands to get him back to deuce. this is about to end.
6:57 pm
i think he's got enough left physically and he's hitting the ball well. mary: after those two double faults cost him that last game he's making sure with these, isn't he? here's a chance for roger. oh, that's way off. >> out. dick: wide, and game point, del potro. john: the first toss was way too far in front of him and it's unusual to see del potro hit a first serve 102 miles per hour. he's definitely edgy.
6:58 pm
dick: another 100-mile-per-hour-plus forehand. john: the way he spanks the ball and the sound that comes off his racket cranks up the crowd. got him going. that was a huge game for del potro. dick: dig out of two break points. cbs swing vision showing that high follow-through straight around the body, flat. john: you can generate more pace but more spin if you go through it the way del potro has as opposed to nadal. that's why he has more problems with nadal on this court.
6:59 pm
the kick he gets on his spin ask not going to hurt a del potro as much or jump up as high as it would on a slower hard court or a clay course. mary: it makes sense that at 6'6" del potro has been able to beat nadal three times this year. although nadal's balls ride up high, can handle it. hit his own forehand.
