that circ tele. you see a -- circle. you can see a car going down there. but you cannot any longer get down to the station. if you come down sowers point road, you see the long line of traffic backed up. people are confused. they're trying to get into this community. and it is completely backed up, we're told, all the way back to merit boulevard. so this is a big issue. police are going to have to get a handle on this situation eventually. because this is really the main in and out route for folks that can get in and out from the water's edge community. so far, that has not flooded. but we do have a changing situation here, where water is now down to the sowers point technical high school. and it is encroaching into just the north turners station area. several of these homes are significant in low areas, and there is water in people's basements. back to you on tv hill. >> you see that backup and you can imagine what that's causing on the other side of it.
6:28 pm
let's go to sharon gibal atta wjz traffic -- gibala. >> reporter: well, obviously roads closed all throughout that area. you can't, again, as captain mike perry said, get in or out of turners station right now. there's a look. again a wide shot of the whole situation there. again, let's go over some of the roads that are blocked. broening highway is blocked between the beltway and willow springs road. you're also look being at-- looking at dundalk avenue. loganview is closed at liberty road. portly road is blocked. so is dunhaven. mcshane way is blocked. back between bel grave and dundalk avenue. loganview shopping center, you can't get in and out of that. that has been evacuated as are the neighborhoods south of there. ramps to and from the beltway is closed. so you can't get through there. sowers point road, as you just saw, from captain mike perry's shot earlier, it is closed between avon beach road and dundalk avenue. now, it is also extremely
6:29 pm
backed up as captain mike perry mentioned, getting in there. but the problem is, these aren't going anywhere. because there is no access into turner station right now. they are going to be sitting there. as far as the people in these homes, you can see the flooding. police are trying to evacuate them at this point. they actually have set up a shelter, we're told, at 7401 halliburton avenue at the senior center. do watch for that. do not drive in the water if you near that area. and you are, in fact, incounterring a road that hasn't been block -- encountering a road that hasn't been blocked. and we don't want to make a rusty situation possibility here. meantime, we'll keep you updated on these road closures. does not look like anything is going to be opening any time soon. so if you are headed to that area, if you know somebody in that area, you do not want to go towards that area. you are not going to be able to get out, unless you are with police and they assist you out at this point. you cannot drive. you cannot. you do not want to walk in the
6:30 pm
water either. that obviously can be a real danger as well. we'll keep you updated. back to you guys. >> thank you, sharon gibala. coming up. >> we, of course, will stay on top of this main water main break that has flooded a staggering stretch of baltimore county. what you need to know is coming up.
6:33 pm
here's what you're looking at. this is what people will be looking at for a long time. a huge water main break, a 72- inch water main break in dundalk. we're going to go next to captain mike perry who has been over the scene for, i don't know, almost two hours now, mike. and doesn't look like the last we've heard from i it's getting any better. >> well, actually, if you look at it now, they have significantly cut back the water flow. this looked like a ridging torrent just a few moments ago. and they have throttled this way back. bill, throttle back a little bit. you can see all of the debris. so the water has been -- if it hasn't been shut off, it has been throttled way back. and it looks like starting to recede a little bit. if we look down dundalk avenue, places that looked like a river, are now looking just
6:34 pm
slightly better. the areas that have three or four feet of water in them are going to take a little while to drain off. but it looks like -- and i hate to say it, because i said things were looking like they were okay before, and we had water in turners station. but right now, this is a really good sign, having this major water main, at least if not shut off completely, it throttled back significantly. and that will cause the water to recede very quickly. because the storm drains in naz neighborhoods. and those storm drains will take away the runoff. and this situation will rectify itself very, very quickly. except in the areas, where part was 4 or 5 feet deep. this may start to relieve some of the traffic issues, getting in and out of turners station, which is a really
6:35 pm
problem right now. that is certainly good news. and we have another reporter who is on the scene right now. mike hellgren is there right now. whether you're on the hard street, there is great concern. i am on dunhill. if you look down the street there, you can see some of the cars have a water that is almost up to their headlines there. they moved some of the cars off. but the water continues to flood down some of the side streets. just to show you the scope of this, i'm going to walk down. they have the fire department. with the county. everybody is out here, trying to make sure that things go smoothly. now, we did shoot some video, a short time ago. here near dunran road. i want to show you that now. that shows the traffic going through the water, that is continuing to build on the side streets. it has flowed out from that area near the logan shopping
6:36 pm
center. and it is a very, serious situation. most people out here say they have never seen anything like this. we talked to a woman who lived here for 56 years. and she said this is the first time she can remember anything like this in this area, a water main break of this magnitude. here's a sample of what we heard from people in the area. >> weem concerned. >> all of our valuables are going to be ruined. who is going to help us out with them? nobody? >> ridiculous. you can see how fast it is moving here. >> how concerned are you about your mother-in-law's home? >> a little. she said the basement wasn't really flooded yet. >> we went to my aunt's house. and a whole bunch of water is flowing off. and it's note really stopping. my aunt had to walk out. it's flowing. >> the water is really bad.
6:37 pm
like you cannot walk through that at all. we're back here live. i want to show you once again, the side streets here starting to fill up with water. a lot of people concerned police had blocked off the sidewalks so that people could not go over in that area. even people in the department of public works say this is one of the largest water main breaks they have seen. and there is a concerted effort to make sure people are safe. but many are still concerned about their property if this gets any worse. and they're continuing to watch the water. we're continuing to get reaction from them. >> captain mike hellgren. i should call him that. mike hellgren is reporting live for us in dundalk. let's go to sally thorner who has more on what our viewers are saying. >> reporter: the issue of property damage is huge. we have tips for homeowners and also business owners impacted by flooding in the area.
6:38 pm
and these tips came to us courtesy of the restoration industry. they're basic disaster planning tips. let me tell you that if you are in danger of being flooded still tonight, move your contents to an upper floor or higher spot within your building. take photos of each room for future reference. and insurance claims. these will provide a digital inventory of some content. it's still probably not a bad idea to prepare for possible evacuation. it's impossible to predict the course of tonight's event. in addition to clothes and toiletries, make sure to collect medications, prescriptions, insurance information, health and homeowners, documents very important. irreplaceable items like jewelry, photos, mementos. cell phones always good to have with you. laptops and chargers, if they get wet, they're fried. pet supplies if that applies, and medication for your pets, checkbook, wallets, credit cards, work gloves and booting would be great if you have
6:39 pm
them. now, if electrical appliances are damaged by the water, do not turn them back on when the power is restored. this can result in electrical shock and/or do further damage to your appliances. so the bottom line is that rapid response is the key to damage control in these situations. if you happen to have tarps, in your home or a garage if you have one, you can protect furniture. always try and raise that furniture as far off the ground as possible. those are tips, courtesy of the restoration industry. and we also want to remind our viewers that we'd love to hear from you if it's safe and if you have access to your computers and and can send us your pictures, send them to wjzwebalert@cbs.com. and we'd like to hear from you as well, if you have a unique perspective to lend to this incredible story of the water main break in dundalk, baltimore county. call us at the newsroom, 410- 578-1313. vic, back to you. >> okay, sally.
6:40 pm
thank you very much. good information for anybody, even if you aren't affected. >> very good information. especially for those who may be evacuated. we're going to be back in a few moments with much more on that water main break in dundalk. it's a revolution in pain relief. (announcer) new icy hot medicated roll. for wherever you hurt. icy to dull pain, hot to relax it away. the new icy hot medicated roll. with the roll, pain's under control.
6:42 pm
6:43 pm
thanks for staying with us. we're looking at that huge 72- inch water main break. we have crews on the ground and in the air. weijia jiang is on the ground as you can see right there. but let's go now to captain mike perry, live in sky eye chopper 13. >> reporter: hello, vic. we still have significant flooding downstream of the water main break itself. but the water volume has decreased significantly. we're hearing word from officials that they have just about have it shut off. the water flow on dundalk avenue has diminished significantly. the shopping center parking lot is nearly empty. and the water level along court way, the road that we told you that runs along the back of the shopping center, has gone down at least a foot, just a few moments ago. we showed you pictures of water rushing by the wheel wells, all
6:44 pm
the way to the top of the wheels. you can see, it's gone down at least a full foot. perhaps a little more. this sup closer to the water main now. farther back in the neighborhood, a little farther to the right, and down mcshane way, there is -- it's going to be a little longer. because that water got significantly deeper. it was chest high or deeper at that point. but we're already seeing a situation beginning to improve. not necessarily on mcshane way, but on some of the other side streets. that loganview drive, back over here, is now -- we can actually see bare pavement, which we were never able to see on loganview. what you're doing now is billy is taking you down mcshane way. this is probably the hardest hit at its deepest point. can you still see it's running pretty good as it comes around the corner. this is headed towards turner station. this water will eventually run off into the storm sewers.
6:45 pm
but right now, still water across sowers point road. dundalk avenue. they still have sowers point closed here. at the sowers point technical school. still no one allowed in and out of turner station. but i expect in the next half hour to 45 minutes, a significant improvement all the way around in this situation. because we're already seeing the water levels reducing. but dundalk avenue is going to be a mess for days to come because there is just piles and piles of debris from underneath this roadway, where the roadway has collapsed. along broening highway. just to get that fixed is going to be a major task that they're going to have to deal with infrastructure issues. they're going to have to deal with, as i said, bge gas issues. electric issues. and of course, all of these cars that got wet down here, many of them may not start ever again. back to you on tv hill. >> all right. thank you, captain mike perry. that was encouraging news from
6:46 pm
him. let's go to weijia jiang on the ground. and looks like the water has stopped flowing behind you. is that right, weijia? >> absolutely. for about three hours, we saw that gushing water. joining us now live is jim smith, baltimore county executive. mr. smith, what can you tell us about the water? it looks like it stopped. has it been completely shut off? >> it hasn't been completely shut off. but it has been for the most part shut off. they still have some mitigation to do that is going to enable them to stop the water completely. we certainly have averted a major crisis. we've had no injuries. really, the only evacuations we had are of people who actually went in the water when we were recommending they not do that. people who sheltered at home are fine. we still have a lot of true krewe on the scene. we'll wait until the -- it's completely shut off. then we have the cleanup. then we have the repairs. then we have to figure out water to the home with that
6:47 pm
major valve being closed. we've got a lot on our plate. but nobody was injured. and really, a disaster has, i think, been averted. >> and what can you tell people at home who are without power, who might hear from family members who are watching? what should they do? and how long do you anticipate they won't have these resources? >> well, i can't really answer how long, but i can tell you, it's going to get the immediate attention that it deserves. i mean, we responded to isabel. we will respond to this in the same fashion that we responded to isabel. anyone that has an emergency, call 911. we have an operation command center set up here. we have the personnel and the equipment to immediately get to them. so if anybody has a medical emergency or an emergency where they need emergency assistance, just call. we're ready to serve. with regard to power, if you've had water in your basement, and that cuts out your electric, i
6:48 pm
mean, the fire department will pump out. and we also have our department of utilities available to supplement the fire department. so we're going to be doing everything that we can possibly do to get people back on track as fast as possible. >> thank you so much, county executive. we will be here following all of the repairs, all the cleanup. stay with us live at 11:00. for now, we are live at dundalk. >> okay, weijia. thank you very much. and as you can probably imagine, this flooding is causing major traffic complications for that area. let's check in with sharon gibala for the latest on that situation. >> it's the worst kind of complication. you can't get in or out if you're in the dundalk station area. let's take another live look at the situation. we can look at some of the road closures for you. obviously because it is a 2-by- 2 mile area, you are looking at several smaller roads that are closed. some of the bigger roads we will talk about. broening highway blocked. dundalk blocked between dun
6:49 pm
hill and fallows point road. loganview closed as is portly drive and dunhaven. mcshane way, you are looking at that being blocked. longview shopping center is closed as is the neighborhood road to the south of there. the broening highway ramp to the beltway, on and off, blocked there toward the key bridge. sallows point road is also blocked. and you're looking at security boulevard, back up. major backup. because on of all of this. and no access in or out of turner station. there is a look at the -- at our traffic camera and the beltway at the key bridge. you can actually see that the ramp there is blocked. no access again to or from the beltway, from that area on broening highway. so again, you cannot get off of the beltway or onto the beltway from that area. so very tough situation.
6:50 pm
people in the neighborhood still being evacuated. the shelter has been set up on 74. we're told at the east senior center. so if you're looking for somebody, that would be a good place to check for them. if you are in a situation that you do not see a barricade in front of you, you do not want to drive in the water, it is extremely dangerous. not only can you seriously mess up your car. you can seriously possibly injure yourself, if not death, which would be horrible. and obviously cause police and rescuers a lot more work to do at this point. fortunately, we're told that at this time water is subsiding a bit. but this is definitely going to be an issue for days. we'll keep you updatedated. back to you. >> can you check in for complete coverage of this massive water main break in baltimore county. for updates and extra video and pictures, log onto wjz.com. >> we'll be right back.
