11:00 pm
and georgia's three turnovers all led to arkansas points. that all came in the first half, though. third and inches. >> todd: they did it again. >> brad: taking third and short and making it third and medium or long. >> referee: false start, offense, number 60. five-yard penalty, it remains third down. >> todd: the 14th penalty against georgia. you can't do that. that is just so self-destructive. clint boling is their best guy up there, one of their real leaders on offensive line and all that is is lack of focus, lack of concentration. you know the snap count and stay on-sides. >> brad: now, third down and five, plus the inches. joe cox, going to load and go to the corner. touchdown! a.j. green. wow. five touchdown passes for both quarterbacks. and that throw was put in the
11:01 pm
only spot it could be put. >> todd: a.j. green has a unique ability to make plays on the ball when it's in the air. this is good coverage by broadway. but because of his skills going up in the air and catching the ball, when it's in the air, you can't defend that. a.j. green is spectacular when the ball is in the air. >> brad: extra point by blair wallish is up and good. georgia struck again through the air and between ryan mallett and joe cox, it's anything you can do i can do better and a.j. green picked off another in the corner of the end zone. joe cox to number eight, 28 yards, dogs score again.
11:04 pm
>> brad: well, s.e.c. on espn, that young man has just joined a pretty good group, five touchdown passes in a game ties matt stafford against gentleman tech last year, shockley in 2007 and green against lsu in 2004. as the now-four quarterbacks in dogs history that have thrown five touchdown passes in a single game. you know that jury being out about joe cox we talked about with erin in the open? >> todd: yeah. >> brad: i think it's over with. >> todd: send them home. >> brad: send them all home. >> tim: he has been outstanding tonight. such a well-liked guy, well-represented and really performing tonight.
11:05 pm
>> brad: there is the kick. johnson, going to let it bounce, and this one goes out of bounds, too. wow, you just can't do that, 40 yard line again for arkansas after we check in with rece. >> a lot of scoring elsewhere in the s.e.c. but one-sided and oxford, southeastern louisiana, against ole miss. d.t. shackleford, d.t., t.d. pick six as the rebels roll easily and up 45-6, 52-6 score for houston nutt's team. lsu, no trouble with lafayette. auburn answered a toechdown from devine with one of its, waiting to tie the game at 27. alabama over north texas, 53-7. alabama against arkansas next week. brl have their hands full with the passing game of arkansas, probably tell you that much. here's ryan mallett loading and firing far side. strike to adams and again that long throw all of the way to the other side of the field
11:06 pm
>> todd: did you see how shet his feet that time? he sidestepped some rush in the pocket. vet his feet and then was able to step into this throw and deliver a strike. watch. little sidestep and all kind of arm to make that throw. but when you're backing up or throwing off the back foot, hard to be consistent. >> brad: five touchdowns for ryan mallett. real go over 400 yards passing by himself at this point. not here. to smith, almost snapped it out of there, nine yards, brandon boykin holding on for dear life with marcus dowtin. >> todd: of mix of how ryan mallett ended up here, perfect fit for bobby petrino and his offense. bobby petrino is a guy who likes his quarterback in the shotgun but also like him to be under center and running plays and do play action. he did a lot of that, ryan mallett did, at michigan and he was well coached.
11:07 pm
scott loeffler the quarterback coach did a great job with him. >> brad: almost stum bd and now too high for jarius wright. he grew up around here, always wanted to be a razorback but at the time houston nutt was here, mitch mustain had not transferred yet. goes to michigan, played for chad henne and rich raurg goes to michigan and i'm 6'7" not going to run the spread. so, everything fell into play. the smile on his face when we talked to him yesterday pretty much said it all. he's having fun tonight but right now his team is down 11. third down and a yard. they're 0 for 2 on third and one tonight. so short yardage hasn't been their best friend. see if they get it. smith and he got it. and popped out of there, michael smith, weaving his way down to the 12 yard line. best run of the night by the little guy.
11:08 pm
>> todd: how much confidence do you have in michael smith? third and short, you have not made it on a couple occasions tonight. he's your smallest tailback but you have trust that he will get your first down. tux behind the linemen, bounces off an arm tackle and turns a short run that a big-time play for the arkansas offense. >> brad: turns it that a 23-yarder and they're knocking on the doghouse again down there against georgia's defense. we're under ten minutes, in fact, approaching nine minutes. arkansas needs a couple of scores. mallett, to smith again. and he's dropped at the line of scrimmage and justin houston with the tackle for georgia defensively. >> todd: i made the point that when ryan mallett was at michigan, his quarterback coach was scott loeffler, an outstapding coach. he, ironicallies quarterback coach at florida and worked with tim dete bow and florida has not
11:09 pm
done a whole lot with the quarterback under center but part of the reason loeffler was to help him transition into more conventional offense. >> brad: second down and ten. cobi hamilton, freshman, throwing to the end zone, incomplete. d.j. williams, intended receiver. check in with erin. f final decision for ryan mallett to come to arkansas may not have happened unless mrs. mallett had that conversation with brian brohm's mom. the family not sure if they wanted their son to commit to coming here because talk of the falcons and him leaving louisvilles, the malletts got on the phone with the brohm family and said if i would do it again i would stick with bobby petrino. >> brad: now, ryan mallett is looking like a taller version of brian brohm in this game. big third down right here,
11:10 pm
although it's two downs all of the way i'm sure for the arkansas raeshgs. mallett in trouble, got away will slide. short of the first down by about three. so it's fourth down and the first down would come at the 2 yard line. so they bring in michael smith, d.j. williams comes back in. >> todd: the end of the play, after the slide, he was complaining helmet to helmet hit. i think that was a good no call. i think the defender tried to pull off at the end. >> brad: knowing they need two scores, they'll try to get one here and worry about the eight-point difference later. tejada hit a 23--yarder earlier and try one from the right hash and he's got it. so field goal by tejada closes the gap but still an eight-point difference.
11:11 pm
>> todd: he miss eed it on thir had to take the field goal but second down ryan mallett made a mistake. watch michael smith on this play. he'll go in the flat and be wide open but ryan mallett is going to look to try to throw it to the end zone for i a touchdown. watch michael smith drift out, nobody's around him. if he dump its it to 21, he walks into the end zone second down for a touchdown but tried to get a little greedy and go to the end zone and pass up the sure thing. he got away with that in the first quarter. >> brad: he did. >> todd: that time he should have dumped it down. >> brad: 7:21 remaining, if you're a georgia fan you want to see the bulldogs take the ball and hope that richard samuel and caleb king can chew up some clock but way this guy has been throwing the football, his arm will come into play, too, i'm sure. 7:21 left, arkansas has two time-outs. georgia has two time-outs. >> todd: once again, besides the penalties, in the first three gameses for georgia, the thing
11:12 pm
that has been a real problem for them has been turnovers. they had three turnovers at the first half. they all led to arkansas points. they have not turned it over here in the second half but this is where they really need to take care of the football. that starts with joe cox and goes throughout everybody that touches the ball in this offense. >> brad: almost unbelievable numbers by both quarterbacks. career-highs in all categories for joe cox. left those career highs behind a long time ago in this game. brandon boykin, spots it at the 10 yard line. boykin, out to about the 28. joe cox's career night, as i mentioned, tied georgia single game record for touchdown passes with five. here's one down the middle to his tight end aron white. flip to a.j. green, bounces off
11:13 pm
tramain thomas and does the rest himself and the beautiful shot to the corner, tavarres king for the touchdown. on play action, right down the gut, to orson charles, freshman tight end and finally, the superstar again with the fade in the corner. samuel pops after a pickup of a couple. bail calm out? >> todd: it did get loose, whether he was down, looks like they ruled him down. >> brad: linesman buried on the 30 yard line, his foot. there is another look. samuel, davis has got him wrapped up. that ball came out and arkansas did come away with it. matt harris free safety came away with the football. georgia wants to get the ball snapped here in a hurry. and they're not going to. >> todd: they have to review this.
11:14 pm
>> referee: previous play is under further review. >> todd: up until last year, this was not a reviewable play. last year they changed the rule that if a play was ruled down, it was not reveeable until last year, they made that change. this was ruled down but i think when they take a look at this they'll see that ball came out before richard samuel had a knee on the ground. >> brad: so, huge call coming up after we take this time-out. looks like the razorbacks might get it back.
11:16 pm
>> todd: if they ruled him down -- >> brad: while you were away, we were way, i should say, georgia was ruled that samuel fumbled the ball but recovered it himself. they carried it again and now it's third down and 11. here is the play of the night for the arkansas defense. joe cox with pressure, deep sideline, nobody over there except his bulldog teammates and it's fourth down. >> todd: nice defensive tand by the arkansas defense. they got the field goal, last possession. they get a quick turnaround. on the third and ten and now arkansas should get the ball back and in pretty good field position for ryan mallett. >> brad: this is one where mark richt would like drew butler to hit it a mile in the air with the ups and the yonders.
11:17 pm
yonder that to the 10 yard line if he can. and he did both. what a kick. at the 10. bouncing at the 9 yard line. you can't do it any better than that. his daddy would be proud. a 64-yard punt. arkansas on offense. and two t-bones! my man! ( laughs ) hot bobby! oh, hot bobby! the more you save on insurance, the more you'll have for football. are you in good hands? dad-gum! dad-gum!
11:19 pm
>> rece davis with you in the studio. texas tech and texas. 24-17 game after earl thomas pick off a potts pass. colt mccoy, back of the end zone, 31-17, on abc. under 7:30 in the fourth. >> brad: rece, here arkansas has the worst starting field position of the football game. 5:25 remaining, they need eight points, a touchdown and
11:20 pm
two-point conversion to tie it up. mallett, fires, incomplete. had joe adams open in the middle. and the clock stops with 5:20. back again to richard samuel's fum nl, officials rule he lose the ball and you see him scoop it and back under to recover it. >> todd: boy, pretty heads up by samuel. we already mentioned it is turnovers have been their undoing sore in the first three games and the turnover there could be disastrous for georgia. >> brad: ryan mallett has cooled off, they need him to warm up, here he is under pressure and bury. georgia finally got a pass rush from washington with a sack. >> todd: that one shouldn't have happened, if you're arkansas, because that was a three-man rush. they rushed three and dropped eight. trying to confuse mallett with coverage. you don't expect on a three-man
11:21 pm
rush to get to the quarterback that easily, nice job by corn eel yaus washington >> brad: jew blues three dominguez and picks up the sack temperature ae 4 yard line. now it's third down and 16. this is a danger zone for any quarterback, he's going to be in his own end zone. and deep down the middle, incomplete again. might be the last down of the ball game for arkansas. with 4:30 to go. >> todd: as sharp as ryan mallett and the arkansas offense have looked tonight, they looked kind of out of whack on that possession. two passes in that drive that didn't look like ryan mallett knew where joe adams was going to be or joe adams didn't know where the ball was going to do be. they had not looked like that all night but here in a critical possession, they didn't look too good.
11:22 pm
>> brad: dylan breeding doesn't even have the kien of room he'd like right now as you look behind him, almost stepping out of his own end line to punt. logan gray, all georgia wants to do is get a sure-handed guy to make a fair catch. >> referee: deleif game, kicking team, half the distance to the goal, fourth down. >> brad: now he's really running out of rel estate. >> todd: back to the punt by butler that set them back. great punt and georgia defense feeling they had them backed up, got the sack and boy, this has been tough for arkansas right here. >> brad: brandon boykin was special teeps player of the week last week, drew butler might be this week for georgia with those three booming punts especially in the last one and here's a georgia bounce on the punt for arkansas and georgia's got it inside the arkansas 30 with 4:19 to go.
11:23 pm
arkansas' got two time-outs, georgia's got an eight-point lead. any kind of points or just clock maintenance by georgia without turning it over and they should be in pretty good shape. >> todd: in terms of yardage, the hidden yardage in that exchange, they picked up 43 yards between the punt of their guy and poor punt by arkansas and already on the 30. >> brad: caleb king, tailback. a.j. green the motion man, it will be caleb king. and king, breaks free. caleb king's got it down to the 11 yard line. almost busted it for a touchdown. he's playing like a man i said earlier, wants more playing time. >> todd: i tell you what, the resiliency and the poise of this georgia football team has been impressive to watch tonight. again, a three-hour and 54-game a kweek ago sense south
11:24 pm
carolina. >> brad: 3:40 now, >> todd: on the road again, facing adversity, getting behind and just continuing maintain their game plan and keep chopping wood and a chance to close in game out with another touchdown here. >> brad: first down outside the ten. caleb king, this time they close in and drop him for a loss. burton, youts side linebacker, first guy there. at least momentarily i don't think that was enough of a loss but we got over 1,000 yards of offense tonight. these guys deserve one of those two-pound steaks you had at doe's the other night. john from fayetteville, arkansas, your taste of the town winner, he says "i got four daughters in the house, one tv. i'm watching the game on my computer. i need a night out." he's going to doe's on us, or on you. >> todd: enjoy yourself, lots of tvs there. he can eat and watch tv.
11:25 pm
>> brad: send acond and 12, hol on to the football. burton trying to rip out the football while beckett was bringing him down and it's third down and long but probably more importantly, the clock is continuing move. 2:45 remaining. joe cox trots over, quick word with mark richt and back into the georgia huddle that he has commanded beautifully tonight. ten touchdown passes in the game, five by each quarterback. that guy would like another crack at it. third down. and they're just going to get it in position for blair walsh to try to kick a field goal that would probably put it out of reach. a field goal would make it 52-41. and walsh will come out, number 57. arkansas takes a time-out.
11:26 pm
so, they have one remaining. last thing you want to have happen here is a blocked kick. we talked about arkansas's schedule and how brutal it was with the road games against top ten teams. georgia goes home to play arizona state after making the trip out to arizona state the beginning of last year and then after that, october 3, number nine lsu at tennessee and tennessee proven today to florida that they are not a pushover by any stretch of the imagination at vanderbilt. florida, october 31st, that one is always a crazy one. two years ago georgia won, florida came back and throttled them last year. so, when you get that game in jacksonville, you never know what is going to happen. >> todd: i've been impressed with both quarterbacks but joe cox, i mean, he's not as big. he doesn't have as big of an arm as ryan mallett and other quarterbacks you see in college football. but what a leader and what
11:27 pm
poise. >> brad: walsh, just got it in the upright and joe cox knows right now it's going to take a miracle for arkansas. georgia, 52, arkansas, 41. >> todd: i think joe cox has only lost one game as a starting quarterback, never lost in high school. >> brad: right. >> todd: won one game he started before this year, lost at oklahoma state where he was sick for three days before the game. >> brad: before the loss to oklahoma state the last time joe cox lost a football game he was playing for mcclinton middle school in charlotte, north carolina. they lost to northeast middle school, up 12-0 and somehow we got beat 28-12, last time he lost a game before stillwater. this will be a sweet one for him, though, because this is a tough place. it's on the road in the s.e.c. it's coming off a four-hour game against south carolina and his dad's got a big smile and just looking at the clock like all of
11:28 pm
the georgia people are, his dad, charles, looking on. hoping that that 2:10 evaporat evaporatinevaporates pretty quickly for arkansas. we predicted 48-45, we didn't quite get it, did we? we undercut georgia's ability to score, i guess. dennis johnson back deep. he is a game-changer, though, if you give him a little bit of an avenue. already one touchdown return on a kick this year. this one high and really short. taken at the 29 yard line and again, good field position as seth got a good return. >> on abc, texas and texas tech, going back and forth, taylor
11:29 pm
potts, to we sehorns on move, t put the thing away. we hit five-minute mark. remember, all-weather delay in auburn, west virginia starting fourth quarter on espn2 and don't forget, college football final after spoer"sportscenter" tonight. >> brad: 2:05 remaining. ryan mallett, in the pocket, some pressure again and penalty marker down. see if it's a holding call. it is. that pocket was collapsing in a hurry again. that's the 11th penalty against arkansas. both teams in double digits in penalty department. after the game, reaction to washington's upset of usc today. building heisman hype, major league baseball's playoff push. all that and more on "sportscent
11:30 pm
are" when we are through. >> todd: one thing we saw today for sure, that is those two young protegees of pete carroll, steve sarkisian and lane kiffin both can coach a little football. kiffin didn't win but they played better against flor dan than i think anybody thought they would today. >> brad: mallett almost got childs right there. brandon smith, freshman covering him. appears that his first s.e.c. game in that arkansas uniform, though brilliant stats, especially in the first half is going to be nor naught unless he pulse a hog out hat here in the last 1:47. you think joe cox will be happy going back to athens? i don't think he'll have a bad week where he hopes nothing will happen. probably turn his quell phone on, ryan mallett down again, justin houston brings him down.
11:31 pm
>> todd: this is good downfield coverage. georgia dropping seven and eight guys, taking away all of the easy throws for ryan mallett and then in doing so, three-man rush, able to get to the quarterback. >> brad: third down and a bunch. third and 19. mallett steps up and goes deep on the sideline and incomplete and might be the last down right here for arkansas. and it's not going to get any easier, that's for sure. at alabama texas a & m, sign a long deal they'll play with a & m every season. auburn, at florida, at ole miss, number one and number five. so there is three times in the top five they're going to have to face between now and october 24th >> todd: that is a brutal, brutal stretch. and then on top of that, not just that they play 11 straight weeks, starting tonight.
11:32 pm
>> brad: th buyer week already behind them, it was last week. mallett down the middle, crossing route and this time, michael smith, but it's not enough and it's too late and with 59 seconds to go, georgia knows now they'll have a big win on road. in conference play. >> brad: that's not a rare thing for georgia under mark richt. >> todd: a tremendous road team and it's -- it's impressive. that's not an easy thing to do but they have got great confidence when they leave athens and gone on the road. >> brad: 31-5 on the road and 25-4 in s.e.c. play and again, we said that doesn't count the florida game because it's a quote, unquote neutral site. joe cox takes a knee. arkansas can stop it one more time if they choose to. and i think bobby petrino knows it's over and maybe won't stop it. there is mark richt's numbers, headset can come off.
11:33 pm
and a sad finish to a brilliant performance by the tall, lanky quarterback of the razorbacks. we talked with joe cox about how he wanted to have a quiet week, it will be a noisy plane ride home, i'm sure. he told us, when you play quarterback at georgia you really don't know what it's all about and how crazy it is until you go through it. well, he's been through three tough weeks. and he came out smelling like a rose tonight. that's for sure. georgia wins on the road in a thrilling s.e.c. battle on espn between the razorbacks and the bulldogs. the dogs at least tonight,en to the hogs. good show by both teams and a whole bunch of offense. 52-41. record-setting night for two quarterbacks, one gets to be happy and one's going to be sad but these two teams really had at it and you see the mutual
11:34 pm
respect, everybody shaking hands down at frank boyles field at razorback stadium. erin? >> erin: joe cox said i'm tired of they being that close, your choechd told us, i just want to see him get better, wanted you to get better. what area do you think you improved in the most? >> game management. it's a totally different world when you're the starter, manage the whole game. and be prepared for any situation and i felt like i've gotten better from week one to week two and week two to week three just feeling more comfortable managing the game, that's the biggest thing. >> erin: you tie a school record, throw for five touchdowns, what was it like being in a game, shootout back and forth? >> it's nerve-wracking, you never see the s.e.c. and two weeks in a row we had to do this. i think it's good for our team. we're battle tested and we're going to fight for 60 minutes and we had to do that pst two games and if we have to do it next game we'll do it. >> erin: you had to deal with drama every week,
