jets doing the talking, patriots being quiet. well, why not? we won eight in a row in the meadowlands. darrelle revis makes a big pick in the first quarter. patriots had all the yards in the first half but only led 9-3. mark sanchez to dustin keller. young quarterback really coming into his own. brady for joey galloway, it's broken up. the new york jets have beaten the new england patriots. as we said, at the meadowlands for the first time since vinny was quarterback in 2000. 16-9. neither team had 300 yards. it was that sort of game but in the end, tom brady in 15 starts against the jets has lost in only three of tem -- them. but the jets backed up their talk all week.
7:34 pm
their coach, rex ryan. >> the patriots are a hell of a football team. i just thought we were the better team team. -- today. that's all we said, that we believed we were the better team today. we went out and showed it. what an amazing team win. it wasn't all the offense, all the defense. it was all of us. special teams put us in great shape in defense. jim leonard at the end, that was huge. >> give the jets credit. they just did a better job than we did today and i don't really think there's a whole lot more to say about it. they just outplayed us, outcoached us, performed better than we did over the 60 minutes and that was the story of the game. >> we've got to try to get back to work and take the positives from the game and learn from the mistakes we made and move forward. we play a tough atlanta team next week.

>> well, first half yards, the way the jets came out to start the second with authority, with crispness, with conviction. sanchez started throwing the they played defensively for 6 op minutes but they just looked like hey, we've stood toe to toe with this team's best shot and we can do it. >> i wand shall -- want to talk about the defense. rex ryan's defense looks like they've been playing this for 10 years. look at the presnap movement they have. they're walking around, five guys on one side of the ball, they'll shift to five guys on the other side. tremendous spresh -- pressure on tom brady even though a sack doesn't show up in the statistics. they made him get rid of the ball quicker than he wanted. the -- and the most fundamental
7:36 pm
thing you have to do well, tackle well. they put them on the ground right there. >> can we talk defense too? >> i was excited about their defense too. the game plan for the jets was phenomenal. get the ball out of tom brady's hands. and the jets brought 24 secondary blitzes. that's with the secondary player, a corner, safety, nickelback, blitzing from the outside. what that does is completely makes your offense dysfunctional. you have to cover on the back end and the secondary coverage along with the blitzes was amazing. it got them off the football field. it allowed mark sanchez and the jets just to capitalize on a few offensive possessions. you think about the third quarter. seven first downs and 10 points in the thirst alone. when you play that kind of
7:37 pm
defense that's all you need to do. let's move on to the saints and eagles. starting without donovan mcnabb. kevin kolb making his first career start. play-action here. to jackson. 71 yards and a touchdown, his first career touchdown pass for kolb. longest of his career too, surprisingly. drew brees, six toochtd passes a week ago. rolls out. finds evans. down the sidelines and in. drew brees, 311 yards and three touchdowns. that's nine touchdowns over the first two weeks of the season and the eighth straight game with 9 least -- with at least thry dating back to last season. >> you look at the guys up front, the offensive line, they've been together for a long period of time.

7:39 pm
believe your answer was yes, but not today, not against this guy. >> yes. because it's about the team you are playing, the person you are playing and nobody plays quarterback right now quite like drew brees. you expect him to put up 25, 35, 48 points. he forces you to have a game plan where you match that. kevin kolb. i thought it was a misprint, threw for 391 yards. but in doing so he turned the ball over six times. critical mistakes. >> he actually did a pretty good job early in the football game managing the game. they got the big touchdown passes to jackson. this game is 10:1010 left -- with -- 10-10 with a minute left in the second quarter. then at the end of the third it's now 31-13 and your

7:41 pm
him for another week to get him to the bye week. to get donovan mcnabb two weeks' rest would be ideal. they have kolb and all of a sudden michael vick back him up. that does afford a little bit of cushion in terms of bringing back donovan mcnabb slowly and when he's ready. >> and you heard andy say it will be kevin kolb next week. and i'm sure it will be brett favre in uniform. making his 271st consecutive start against detroit. the lions beat the vikings twice last year? but they didn't win. now adrian peterson. tied 10-10. we have seen this before. detroit was very game but in the end, it dissipated. brett favre actually threw for more yards than peterson ran

for. so for this one, minnesota wins it. we all know tampa bay lost 26 in order to start their career, if you will. but now 19 losses in a row tie a chicago cardinals squad in the 1940's and an early 1960's oakland raiders squad as second most. they used to beat minnesota all the time. they just can't win. all right. chicago and pittsburgh. these two teams scream defense. low-scoring game. jay cultler to johnny knox. he finds gold for a touchdown. we're tied at 14-14. jeff reed missed two makeable field goals. 43-yarder. no. now robby again. so fort knox is gold and robby is solid gold. the bears win it 17-14. after a heartbreaking loss.
7:43 pm
one of the stories of the day, the teams that lost the heartbreakers last week by and large won this week. >> it means a lot. means a lot to this team. we've had a lot of pressure and expectations on us since i got here and since orlando got here and since the defense has stepped it up. it's good to get this one off our backs an move on. we went to green bay with the whole city of chicago on us, which is fine. we love it. we expect that. but to get this one behind us and get rolling, we love it. it's going to be good for us. >> kudos for the beards facing a rough -- for the bears facing a rough early start. pittsburgh could not put it away. but kudos chicago and defensively they played pretty well without urlacher. >> yeah, there were plays made by that front four of the chicago bears. i thought the penetration not
7:44 pm
only in rushing the passer but also in defending the run actually is what keyed the football game. i thought, you know, we had that question this morning, who is going to miss who more? the bears urling a acker or the steelers troy polamalu? i thought you definitely saw today that they missed troy polamalu much more than the bears missed urlacher. >> and far as hard as we were on jay cutler last week, he played that good this week. he was very sharp. great game plan by the bears to take advantage of the quick passing game, get the ball out of his hands, make quick, decisive decisions with the football. and they carried the football. let's not forget, they only rushed the ball 18 times from 43 yards. so this thing sat squarely on jay cutler's shoulders and he responded very well.
7:45 pm
if you can get this kind of play out of cutler the rest of the year, now this might be the chicago team we expected. >> and krpg they play that well defensively over the course of an entire season if it takes that long for brian urlacher to come back? because he is out for the year. he's done. >> the front four there are beasts. when you watch the way they can dominate play, they're going to do all right defensively. yes, they're missing great play in terms of brian, but they're certainly going to be good enough to win if jay cutler plays the way he did today. >> their front four had fallen off a little from that super bowl, hadn't it? >> yes. >> well, this game between the ravens and charges was more like the ravens' type of score. >> the ravens a week ago, 500

7:47 pm
defensive juggernaut? >> i think it's a balanced team and that's what they've always been searching for in baltimore, a wallaced -- bools -- balanced football team. it's what they've been searching for for years. i would not be surprised if this is the matchup we see in the a.f.c. championship game moving forward. two very, very good football teams. the baltimore ravens, having balance on offense, i don't know how you beat them. >> what about the pressure we expected to come from the charges -- chargers? with the return of shawne merriman we expected tremendous pressure. tp just has not been there. you joked about it, that last play, i've got a guy who just threw for over 40 yards, he's sharp as he can be but the last play we're going to run is a run, literally a live -- diving right alt ray louis. i hate to second-guess a coach but boy, you would have thought somewhere in there is an option
7:48 pm
with the ball in phillip rivers' hands. >> but how about the way rivers played? i know it's a loss. but 400 yards speaks for itself. really this is a team without the starting guard, without the nose tack. it's on rivers if they're going to win. at home to miami and then a bye. it's on rivers if they're going to survive this first little quarter. >> and they -- to throw the ball down the football field under duress is what he's being asked to do now. almost every single pass play he's getting hit. it's remarkable the production considering the circumstances he's splay -- playing under. >> well, little sproles -- >> that's the question. >> you're sharing time, sharing time, eventually you've got to see how many touches this kid can handle.

how many times can we give him the ball and what can he handle? >> right. but you don't want hill doing this all year long but -- >> i don't know how long i want him doing it. i look at maurice jones drew and i say well, can we give him this? eventually you want to see how much you can give him. >> the winner of the seahawks- niners game was going to be the only one with no losses in the division. he could go all the way jim 79 yards for 16, in the end zones -- -- zone. he had 207, early third quarter. square -- scary moment. hasselbeck trying to dive into the end zone right before the half. he knows something is wrong. trent, you know better than us, this is ribs. seneca wallace with the bright
