thrower. >> dave: and best is on the field. first down from the cal 35. instead, an end around. so, a fourth-string runningback. and he gets taken down by kyle theret. kevin riley is the quarterback. >> chris: one of the game plans for the bears is this. they want to run outside. they feel they have a speed advantage over the golden gophers. they're trying to get the big, defensive linemen running. but the strength of this team is the linebackers. and on film, all the linebackers and safeties run well. we'll see who wins that little matchup. >> dave: here's best's first carry. huge hole. theret brings him down. best has 100-yard rushing games

or more. >> bob: we talked about the speed that he has. and the explosiveness. but you saw right then, when they gave him the ball, he was not in a hurry to hit the hole. he allowed his offensive linemen, to develop their blocks and see what happens. and then, use his speed getting through the hole. >> dave: third down and two. they'll run best. and it's going to be close. looks like he may have crossed the first down line. nate triplett made the stop. it is a first down for cal. the defensive starters for minnesota at the top of your screen. they're very good at taking the ball away. last year, 11th in the country in that category. and three takeaways for minnesota this year, including a game-winning fumble recovery by that guy, nate triplett, last week against air force.

kevin riley, junior quarterback out of portland, oregon, in the gun. nothing there for best. knocked down by keanon cooper. >> chris: one way to stop jahvid best is to bring a safety. third or fourth extra linebacker. he's unblocked. a good open-field tackle bring his feet. i want to go back to bob's point. two qualities of a runningback that aren't often mentioned. we talk about speed. that's a given. but what jahvid best brings is vision. as bob talked about, patience. vision is an unheralded quality for a runningback. one of the best of all-time, emmitt smith, had great vision. >> dave: riley, hits jeremy ross. breaks a couple of tackles. and into minnesota territory. a few yards shy of a first down.

kyle theret, makes another tackle. >> chris: they're working the outside, to make the defensive line tired. the defensive line makes the runbackers so productive. they do a good job of eating up line blockers up front. i see minnesota, hands on hips. that tells me they're sucking a little wind. >> dave: they ran on third and short last time. they run it again. quarterback draw. and riley has the first down at the gopher 40, where nate triplett makes the stop. brian holley, the fullback, was out front, blocking for his quarterback. >> bob: i see kevin cosgrove, the defensive coordinator, saying swell. i got the speed big play guys on the outside. now, i have to watch the quarterback running a quarterback draw? yeah, you've got to, kevin.

it's a good call by andy lug wig, the defensive coordinator for cal. >> dave: another end around. jeremy ross in space. good job by traye simmons to told him up until the calvary comes. cal is moving the ball nicely on this opening drive. >> chris: you talked about andy ludwig, coming from utah. andy worked with jeff tedford at utah. utah is a spread offense. andy came in and adjusted what jeff tedford's offense is. and he said, i'm an offensive football coach. i'll adjust to what we need to do. when you have this type of offense that can give you every look, it puts a lot of pressure on defenses. >> dave: they fake the end around. and best has a huge hole down the middle. and then, busts to the outside.

>> bob: this is not a situation, uncommon to minnesota this year. they've been behind in both of their first two ball games. in fact, last week, came back and scored 17 points against air force, in their fourth quarter to win that game. >> dave: what's that tim brewster's holding high hopes for, is a comeback. they have to find a way to stop cal at some point. >> chris: carpenter lined up as a back. >> dave: weber finds green. another talented sophomore. >> chris: that's the element of the offense they ran last year, under mike dunbar, which was a spread offense. you bring in carpenter on speed, the defense has to locate him. and account for him. so, that is much like andy ludwig, of california, and his offense. pro style. a lot of different personnel groupings. they do a good job of mixing it
