the main suspect in the case now stands accused of planning to blow up bombs on u.s. soil. drew levinson reports that the charges are now a whole lot more serious. >> reporter: terrorism suspect nudge bull l.a. zazi is now charged with plotting a bomb attack. conspiracy to use weapons of mass construction. the fbi initially arrested the airport shuttle driver and two others for allegedly lying to investigators. >> he went from facing a relatively minor charge to a charge that involved life in prison. >> reporter: the government case spells out how the afghan immigrant got instructions and ingredients to make a bomb, including large quantities of hydrogen peroxide and acetone products from beauty supply stores in the denver metropolitan area. cbs news has learned zazi was on law enforcement's radar for at least two years.

the fbi swooped in after his trip here to new york just before september 11th. investigators feared zazi may have been planning to detonate bombs on crowded city trains. authorities planned to bring him back to new york to face the new charge. zazi was in a denver courtroom today. he'll be back there again friday. his father charged with lying to investigators appeared with his son. >> when mohammed zazi left the courtroom, you would have thought there would have been some sort of exchange between them. there was none. >> reporter: the judge freed zazi's father until his next hearing and in brooklyn the third man charged with lying was released on bond. the indictment against zazi says he was working with others, others the fbi is still trying to track down. in new york, drew levinson, wjz eyewitness news. >> investigators have not yet determined the time or place of a possible attack, but counter terrorism agents have said new york city commuter trains might have been the target. weeks after his death, a

replacement has been named to fill the seat of form senator ted kennedy. alex demetrick is live with details. >> reporter: the governor of massachusetts has named former democratic party chairman paul kirk, jr. to fill the vacant seat. he will serve in the post until voters pick a replacement in a special election in four months. kirk is a kennedy family friend who served on the late senator's staff for eight years and is chairman of the jfk library foundation. kennedy's widow and son supported kirk's appointment. vic. >> thank you. this move allows president obama to regain a critical 60th u.s. senate vote he needs to pass a health care overhaul which was also senator kennedy's passion. an investigation is underway into a serious accident in northern baltimore county. we are over the scene a short time ago. vehicle overturned trapping the person inside. it happened at falls road and block rock road. a med vac helicopter was called to fly the victim to a nearby hospital. massive water main break in

dundalk has prompted change in maryland. disaster drills are underway to help residents prepare for similar situations in the future. >> reporter: public works authority admit this could happen again. if it does, baltimore county wants to make sure its residents have instant relief. thursday morning baltimore county crews staged a drill to answer a question on everyone's minds after a massive water main break severely flooded dundalk. what if it happens again. >> it's dependent upon the disaster but it's one stop shopping where we are getting everything at once and the plan we are following right now provides enough for 5000 people per day. >> reporter: the wal-mart in dundalk is the county's sea pod or commodity point of distribution, if a major disaster strikes residents can drive through a lane similar to this for supplies. all the supplies for the drive through are stored through this trailer at the dundalk. generators, tables, chairs, cones, vests, anything crews

need to use anytime there's a disaster. the crews offered the same relief for those impacted. >> it was such a smaller area of only a few streets and neighborhoods such as turners and logan village. we were able to go house to house with the supplies. >> reporter: over 100 households are still struggling to clean up and rebuild their homes. all the while workers here will continue to practice just in case. in baltimore county it's opening a disaster recovery center this saturday morning and will be open all day. residents can go there and speak with several different state agents about what to do next. reporting in dundalk, weijia jiang. work on the 72 pipe should be complete in three to four streets. the water main break magnifies a problem looming under our feet. tonight wjz investigators maryland's crumbling infrastructure at 11:00. construction is underway for a new roadway here in maryland and it might come with

yet sure, the board has asked transit systems around the country to let them know what steps they have taken or will take to ensure commuters are safe. >> the mta hasn't made any changes. however, we have implemented various confidence tests of the system. >> reporter: the baltimore metro may look a lot like d.c.'s but it's entirely different, like a ford versus a chevy. >> the mta system was mad from a different manufacturer. >> reporter: though different manufacturers, there are similarities between the train controls of the d.c. and baltimore's metro system. now mta is checking to see if any of those similarities to cause problem. >> the mta's signal system aa fail safe system and if any component in the system fails, it stops the movement of trains. >> reporter: no one can guarantee complete safety. officials here are confident enough to publicly say. >> yes, the system is safe. >> reporter: mike schuh, wjz, eyewitness news.

a dogfighting ring is broken up in the day care center where police say it operated is shut down. in a raid in sunburn chicago police found nine dogs, many injured and hungry. investigators believe that dogs were forced to fight inside a garage in a home where children come to day care. one of three men charged says that a puppy lost its eye by accident. security is tight at an east texas high school while students, teachers and parents remain shaken by the murder of a teacher. police say a student stabbed the teacher several times in his classroom yesterday. classes resumed today with extra counselors and security officers on campus. parents remain outraged that the school recently cut some of its security staff. actor john travolta is the star witness in the blackmail trial that surfaced after the death of his son jett. as kelly reports. >> reporter: with wife kelly preston looking on, john travolta described his frantic

attempts to revive his sun jett after the 16-year-old collapsed in the bathroom of their vacation home, travolta testified he performed mouth-to- mouth resuscitation while a nanny pumped his son's test. he told jurors that jett suffered a seizure every five to 10 days, each lasting from 45 seconds to minutes. the actor then made a surprising admission acknowledging publicly for the first time that his son had had autism. >> it was a jaw dropping revelation. >> reporter: scientology watchers believe he may have kept the condition a secret because of the way sign follow gist -- sign sol they review illness. >> a suppressive person is mainly someone who is opposed to scientology. >> reporter: in interviews following his death, experts explained why many members keep their sicknesses hidden. >> it's really a big deal so how the travoltas dealt with

now where alexis christoforous has the money update. >> reporter: home resales dipped nearly 3% last month. that follows four straight months of gains. experts say some deals may have been delayed because of tough lending standards and new rules for appraisals. the median sale price for a home sank 12 1/2 %. but there's more encouraging news for the job market. the number of newly laid-off workers applying for unemployment fell for the third straight week. it's further evidence that layoffs are continuing to ease. with the economy moving from recession into recovery, the fed is scaling back some of the extraordinary support it's provided to banks and other companies to cope with the financial crisis. the fed is pulling back two emergency lending programs that will reduce the amount of money available to banks in short- term loans. policy makers need to leave it intact long enough to support the recovery but not so long that it fuels inflation. and nintendo is slashing the price of its popular wii

which typically for us means a summer-type pattern, dew points in the mid-60s usually gives you the tropical feel. look at the current conditions. we are looking at temperatures around 82 degrees, 66 the dew point. all of the relative humidity says 52 that's deceiving because when you add an 82 temperature with a 66 dew point, you do feel that mugginess out there and at the times during the afternoon when the sun has broken through the clouds, it heats up very quickly and it can start feeling a little uncomfortable very fast. winds are from the west- northwest at 10 miles per hour. the barometer at 30.01. across the area temperatures are ranging pretty much around that 80-degree range. we have 75 in oakland, the cool spot. 82 in hagerstown, 84 on the shore and 81 in elkton. around the immediate metro area, temperatures reflecting winds coming in from the west, warming us up. the northerly component helping to usher in clouds. larger system out to our west will bring in first warning doppler radar and give you an

idea what is sitting off to our west. the ohio valley is playing host to a large low pressure system that's trying to ease its way in here. currently high pressure still kind of dominating our forecast. this is going to start making its way in here by saturday. what we are going to see in the meantime, however, just a slight chance of showers, just like we had yesterday if you were in northern baltimore county, up toward hat ford or cecil counties, you heard rumbles of thunder late yesterday evening and in the bigger picture, this shows how this is shaping up. we do not have any rain area wide but this is going to start to make its way into the region. tomorrow a pretty nice day but it won't be long before tomorrow evening we start to see a chance of this system starting to ease its way in. by saturday into sunday we see a better chance of rain. it's a matter of timing. the sooner it gets here saturday, the sooner it gets out of here on sunday. if it takes a little while to get through here, it's going to take a little while to get out of here. so we are talking about of course early portion of the weekend, not being too bad. we likely see some showers on

it is 4:28, 82 degrees and partly sunny. hello. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm denise koch and here's what people are talking about. protesters clash with police in the streets of pittsburgh because a summit of world leaders is about to get underway in the steel city as teri okita reports, it is to protect world economies from future meltdowns. >> reporter: downtown pittsburgh looks like it's bracing for a hurricane. most small businesses have decided to close up shop before floods of g-20 protesters fill the streets. >> we are worried about the windows getting broken and we had to pay somebody to come in and board it off. >> reporter: donald william jefferson runs a small shoe shine operation, shutting down for the next two days will cost him hundreds of dollars. >> i think that the world leaders need to get together and solve some of these problems, but i don't want to go hungry because of it. >> reporter: leaders from the world's largest economies are all making their way to pittsburgh to talk about

shoring up the fragile economic recovery. president obama will host the group as it tries to curve risky practices and cap bankers' bonuses in order to prevent another financial meltdown. pittsburgh has spent the last two decades staging its own recovery after the collapse of the steel industry that the city was built on. pittsburgh has dispatched police to every major intersection and cordoned off large areas of downtown with huge barricades. 14 green peace members landed in jail wednesday after scaling two bridges with huge banners. but the demonstrators we have spoken with say they are focused on bringing awareness to their cause, not making trouble. >> i think everyone is out here just to make sure their voice is heard. i don't think anything is going to get too aggressive. >> reporter: police expect thousands of protesters both today and friday but have few details about specific planned demonstrations. in pittsburgh, teri okita, wjz eyewitness news. prime minister gordon brown is pushing to have the g-20

replace the g8 economic summit as the board of directors for the global economy because it includes more world powers. a man charged with killing his wife and five children in florida has confessed on camera to the crime. alex demetric is live in the newsroom with more. >> video shows the suspect admitting to reporters that he committed the murders. he is accused of stabbing and cutting the throats of his wife and their five children before fleeing to haiti a week ago. their bodies were discovered in the family's florida townhome. reporters caught up with the suspect as he was being extradited back to florida. >> right away because i think my family probably buried this saturday coming up, i want the jury to give me death right now that way i can bury at the same time. >> what possessed you to do it. >> my mom. >> in what way. >> my mom, the devil, my mom speak, whatever she is serving. >> she is being held in jail on suicide watch before he awaits

trial for killing his family. an attorney for dimas say he is considering insanity for defense. hundreds of mourners gathered for the annie le in new york. it was held yesterday at a synagogue where her fiance's family belonged. leaders of the temple were set to officiate le's wedding september 13th but that was the day her body was found stuffed in a wall at a yale medical building. a yale lab technician has been charged with her death. a bethesda teenager pleads guilty in federal court to possessing a catalog of bomb making materials. bruce reports on what police confiscated from his home. >> reporter: three assault rifles, two shotguns, more 50 pounds of bomb making materials and instructions on how to make armor piercing rounds. investigators found all that in the bethesda bedroom of 19-year- old colin mckenzie goody. >> how was it to see your son? >> reporter: the teenager's

parents offered no explanation. but his lawyer said mckenzie goody never planted to hurt anyone. >> there is no presidential motorcade map, there is no highlighted list of st. john's teachers. >> reporter: another teenager who lived here in a rural parting of gators burg has -- gaithersburg has already pleaded guilty to manufacturing pipe bombs. his lawyer insists that his client was simply holding all those bomb making materials for his friend's father who lived here and was in the middle of a nasty divorce. >> there was no plot to kill anybody at any time. >> reporter: the story only gets more strange. the lawyer says the friend's father actually stars in this youtube video that purports to show a russian special forces unit in chechnya. he says the father wanted to teach his kids about the explosives he used before

fleeing russia. >> he is of a mind-set that his children should learn how to be men. >> reporter: but prosectors continue their focus on mckenzie a former member of the st. john's jrotc rifle team. the u.s. attorney says there is no way to know what he would have done if police hadn't found his arsenal. >> that was bruce la shen reporting. the teenager will be sentenced in january and faces up to 10 years in jail. firefighters are still trying to figure out what sparked the fire that destroyed a northwest baltimore home. flames swept through the home in the 1300 block of west 41st street just after 5:00 a.m. this morning. no one was injured. the cause of a fire that started earlier this month at a bel air day care facility has been released of the a faulty ceiling fan light fixture sparked the flames at the learning center on september 3rd. at the time there were 55 children inside the building. staff members got everyone out safely. in tonight's health watch report, scientists are one step

closer to a vaccine to prevent hiv, the virus that causes aids. as joel brown reports for wjz, a u.s. led trial in thailand has a vaccine. >> reporter: it's a day many medical experts thought they would never see, a vaccine that can prevent the virus that causes aids. >> it's some important and good news. >> reporter: the ground breaking prevention came from combining two unsuccessful aids vaccines into one. the experimental vaccine cut the risk of becoming infected with hiv by more than 30%. the u.s. army led the trial carried out in thailand, 16,000 volunteers took part. this is one of those volunteers. he lost friends and relatives to aids. he says it's the reason i volunteered, what we all do now is for the next generation. experts acknowledge that the effectiveness of the vaccine is

modest, but it still offers hope and hope is something this city could use. 3% of washington, d.c. residents suffer from hiv or aids. that's the highest percentage in the country. but the strain of the aids virus that's prominent in the u.s. is different than the strains in thailand. scientists says that means this vaccine probably wouldn't have the same effect here or in other parts of the world. >> but there's so much that we don't know about the immune response to hiv. >> reporter: u.s. doctors will now take what was learned in thailand and target the strains of hiv found elsewhere. worldwide, 7000 people are infected with hiv each day. joel brown, cbs news, washington. >> researchers will reveal more details of the $105 million study next month at a vaccine conference in paris. also in health watch, a new laser treatment could offer relief for allergies without

four police officers were shot while issuing a search warrant in new jersey this morning. the group was serving a narcotics and weapons warrant around 2:30 a.m. when gun fire erupted. one officer was struck in the face, another in the foot. two others sustained minor injuries when they were shot in their bulletproof vests. a 39-year-old suspect also suffered multiple gunshot wounds. a u.s. census worker has been found hung near a cemetery in rural southeastern kentucky. the 51-year-old bill sparkman
