named. we're doing couples working out. >> this is your chance to laugh at all, it's back. >> this couple will be working out with sarah on the show in just a couple months. also richard marx is here. but first the top story, the escalating tension between the u.s. and iran. president obama warned tehran on friday to come clean or face the consequences. cbs news correspondent elizabeth palmer has the latest. >> reporter: this morning iran has actually hardened up its line on this newly disclosed site. it was under construction. they now say it's going to be put into operation. that's from the supreme leaders office which is squarely in line with the tone taken by iran's president. in new york iran's president, mahmoud ahmadinejad, was on the offensive. >> translator: this is not anything secretly, it just doesn't mean that we must inform

h. inform mr. obama's administration of every facility that we have. >> reporter: but iran didn't tell the iaea the world's nuclear watch dog, until last monday. and only came clean then say western intelligence agencies because their secret had been discovered. it's time said president obama, for iran to start dealing in good faith. >> iran's leaders must now choose. they can live up to their responses and achieve integration with the community of nations, or they will face increased pressure and isolation. >> reporter: iran has three main nuclear sites in operation. the biggest is in the t after the nz where they enrich enrain yum. it's converted into other forms and in rack there's a heavy water plant. the latest site is near the holy city of qom on a former military missile site. western agencies believe it was going to be used touranium.

iran insists this is for peaceful purposes only. now, this really sets the stage for highly charged face to face talks later this week between iran on one side of the table and the u.s. britain, germany, france, and china on the other. elizabeth palmer in london for us. thank you. now for some perspective on iran's pursuit of nuclear weapon, we're joined in our washington bureau by martin, director of foreign policy at the brookings institution. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. >> now that we know that iran has been hiding certain aspects of its nuclear program, what can be done? that is the big question this morning. >> well, clearly president obama is going to try to engage with the iranians this coming thursday. negotiators will be sitting down and trying to get the iranians to see that it's in their interests to in the only come

clean, but accept international safe guards and curbs on their program that would give the international community sufficient confidence that it's not going to take its fuel and divert it into nuclear bomb making material. if that doesn't work then i think president obama and british and french leaders have made clear that the nest step is what's called crippling sanctions. if that doesn't work then we're left with very unpalatable options. >> there was limited tou talk yesterday, mostly coming from gordon brown, president sarkozy, president obama. do you still have russia and china that are a really on the sidelines here? and are sanctions enough? especially without russia and china giving their full support. >> the hope is that we can bring russia and china along. the wush shans have at least shown a little bit of anchor now in terms of being prepared to consider that. the chinese are still on the
8:06 am
fence. there's a lot of hard diplomacy in bringing them around but it's not hopeless especially because the iranians have just made it easier through their deception on this particular case. but it seems to me a doubtful proposition that in the end we can produce sanctions that are sufficient to change the mind of the iranian regime. after all, we've had some 30 years of american sanctions on on iran as well as european sanctions. there are some things that can be done like a with an on the importation of refined oil which would puthurt the iranian economy but they have the ability to withstanding sanctions for longer. >> president obama and secretary gates have both mentioned military force as a potential option. do you see that as the road we are now down-headed in. >> yes in stages. and we shouldn't assume that we're going to get there anytime
8:07 am
soon. i think we're probably 12 months off before this path of engagement and potentially sanctions and then looking at the other options. but the other option that's on the table is the military option even though it's into the good one, partly because it only buys time. the iranians would take the nuclear program even further you said ground presumably abrogate their obligations understand the nonproliferation treaty not that they respect it in any way at this point, but it would buy us some time to hope that the are a rigime would change. deterrence is what we do in the race of -- which is what we did in the cold war. >> ambassador, thank you for taking the time. >> thanks for having me. now over to erica.

connection here or is it simply company coincidence some. >> there doesn't appear to be any connection. the individuals appear to be acting alone, motivated to commit terrorist acts. fortunately contacted by fbi undercover agents and sources early on. and so those were singular cases. but what's interesting about the coincidence is the timing. we were about to commemorate the september 11th anniversary. we were in the period of the holy month for muslims which sometimes violent extremists use as a period to plan attacks. and so there may have been some connections in terms of the calendar versus any of the plots themselves. >> so it would be more the calendar that would be the connection or could it be that law enforcement is shrimply maybe stepping up or at the point where they're closer to uncovering some of these potential cells? >> well, these cases usually have a life of their own. they're being hammed by the local fbi and the joint

terrorism task forces. and so the development of them and when they're taken down usually is a decision made by the local agents. that said the fbi may have had an incentive here especially given that we don't know exactly what was at play in the zazi case to try to disrupt as many ongoing activities as possible to act as a deterrent. so that may be at play as well. >> so you bring up a good point. acting that the particular moment. how close do you think this plot in particular was to becoming a reality? >> well, the zazi plot is hard to tell. in part because the agents are still trying to figure out what the network looked like what zazi was trying to target and what his plan ultimately was. but given what we though about the sense of urgency that zazi had leading up to the september 11th anniversary, his travel from denver to new york authorities think that he was getting close to the operational
8:12 am
stage. >> before we let you go there's been some discussion about how perhaps the fbi and the nypd maybe weren't working as well together that maybe an officer should have spoiled some plans and disrupted the discovery of a larger terror cell. is that a legitimate concern? >> well, in any of these cases, there's the need for cooperation. and nypd and fbi especially after 9/11 work very well together. in these cases, though sometimes you have to use sources and in this case this individual in new york who has been arrested to try to find out more information. in this case he actually told zazi the suspect, that the federal authorities were looking at him. that was a mistake. that led to the preemptive arrestses and a a little bit of a premature closure of the case and that's why the authorities are still trying to figure out what the entire network looks like. >> naum of questions to be answered. thanks for helping us make sense of it. let's turn now to kate sully
