vigil in mount airy. tonight residents in that small town remember the family killed in a murder-suicide. good evening. i'm adam may. friends and neighbors gathered in mount airy to remember the dalton family. police say that financial hardships may have pushed charlie dalton over the edge when he killed his entire family, then himself. [ music ] >> reporter: in mount airy, the grief is still too painful for some sharing memories helps ease the hurt. that's why neighbors came out to remember the entire dalton

family. >> we love this family. >> police say charles dalton senior shot his wife jennifer and their two children while they slept inside their home, then turned the gun on himself. grief stretches from the family's neighborhood to the mount airy fire department. >> well all felt a sense of loss. >> reporter: 14-year-old charlie spent time in the fire academy. >> he was one of those kids that was never a problem, he was well raised, well mannered, and just a real good student to have around. >> reporter: firefighters who knew charlie dalton junior say they were glad that only one paramedic had to enter the house to check for survivors. the rest say they're glad they were spared seeing the gruesome crime scene. friends came adding to the growing pile of flowers and

notes. >> i miss playing in my room with her and sometimes outside. >> breaking the news to her that night was devastating. >> reporter: some neighbors say they're shocked to learn that financial troubles may have been the motive for the murder- suicide. >> we have no indication that -- just like everyone else, they were all struggling. >> state police say when jennifer dalton did not show up to work on friday, someone came to the house to check on her, and that's when they spotted a body through the window. some pretty intense moments in prince george's county after businesses were evacuated because of a gas leak. fire officials responded to pen mar shopping center around 1:00 this afternoon. there was no blast but earlier this year it was a very different story here. >> we were probably extremely close to having another devastating event. >> i don't think it's a shopping center itself. i think it's the infrastructure that services the shopping center. >> and they say this because

this amazing video here back in may when the same strip mall was the scene of a gas explosion that injured nine firefighters. the blast also destroyed several of the businesses. an early morning fire claims the life of a woman maine baltimore county. it broke out in the 9,000 block of deviation road. that's here in white marsh. investigators say a woman, believed to be in her 50s, perished in this blaze. tonight the cause of that fire is unknown. meanwhile, in chesapeake city, seven horses are dead after a fire breaks out at an equestrian center. it took firefighters 45 minutes to put out what was called a three-alarm blaze. damages estimated to be $1 million. just as football season is heating up, some warnings from the government trigger an intense survey of stadium safety. the alerts caution that athletic complexes are among potential targets for terrorist attacks. tonight weijia jiang has more on how the stadium authority is

now bulking up security. >> reporter: good evening, everyone. the first step is to comet what's called a security threat and vulnerability assessment which will determine if baltimore stadiums are dangerous to the thousands who visit them. as baltimore ravens fans charge m&t bank stadium for sunday's game, signs caution them that workers are taking precautions. >> they pat you down, check all your areas, make sure you're not smuggling. >> they went through my purse and they looked through things. >> we pretty much follow all the nfl and mlb best practices for security. they tell to us put out updates, alerts, and bulletins. >> reporter: but after warnings that terrorists may target stadiums and hotels officials wonder if security is tight enough. this after four men are accused of plotting to use backpack bombs on new york trains. >> there's a lot of usa people here, and they feel like they would damage the culture here.

>> reporter: in response, the maryland stadium authority which runs m&t bank stadium and camden yards have have hired a consultant to see if additional measures are necessary. >> more security, the less chances someone has to plan a terrorist attack. >> reporter: much of which includes monitoring activity and current trends at both stadiums. >> they or doing sort of a comprehensive evaluation with respect to technology, creating personnel and overall security practices. >> reporter: some game goers call the study excessive. >> i do feel secure. i don't think there's going to be a threat or problem. >> reporter: msa is not taking any chances. that we don't want to fight the last war. the solutions we developed six months ago or three years ago may not be the solutions that are necessary today. >> reporter: a final report of the assessment is expected to be finished by the end of the year. the msa will then consider any recommendations. weijia jane, wjz, eyewitness news. >> and that firm has already

conducted similar surveys at other stadiums nationwide. how about shorter summers and more studies? president obama wants the school year to now be extended. he says that american kids are not spending enough time in school and the president went on to say that this puts our youth at a disadvantage compared to other students. the president admits the idea will probably not be very popular with children, including his own school-aged daughters. one thing that was not extended around here was certainly the warmth of summer. if you've been outside you know what i'm talking about, a sure sign that fall is here, so let's check in with meteorologist tim williams, because he has the updated conditions right now in the first warning weather center. >> we're looking at first warning weather doppler radar and talking about a pretty cool overnight. it definitely starts to feel like the fall air is upon us. >> you can feel it tonight, that's for sure. >> temperatures right now just around the 50-degree range and

60 degrees actually at b wisconsin marshal. southwest wind at 5, but a clear radar, did and that is going to be the way through the night, through tomorrow early, but then there's a chance of rain moving in our direction. we'll talk about that in your complete updated first warning weather forecast. >> tim, thank you so much. well, for the first time ever, we are seeing some secret security tapes that are from the oklahoma city bombing. take a look here. the fbi released these black and white tapes today. they show the people rushing from nearby buildings after a fertilizer bomb wept off 14 years ago. some of the images were used as evidence that the bomber, timothy mcveigh's trial was later executed. the 1995 bombing killed 168 people and injured hundreds of others. it was the worst attack in u.s. history before the september 11th, 2001, attacks. well, this weekend, more prisoners were released from guantanamo bay. according to the justice department three detainees were taken from cuba, then sent to

ireland and yemen. it's the latest transfers as president obama tries to close this controversial facility by the january goal. defense secretary robert gates appeared on the morning talk shows to defend the president's decisions. >> then if we find we can't get it done by that time but we have a good plan, then you are in a position to say it's going to take us a little longer, but we are moving in the direction of implementing the policy that the president set. >> and gates says he doesn't know whether the deadline will need to be extended. well, iran says it successfully test-fired short- range missiles. this comes just days after the u.s. and its allies revealed that iran is now building a secret nuclear facility. here's our report from the united nations. >> reporter: iran's revolutionary guard says this is proof it's ready to crush any country that threatens iran. a bold show of force that has the international community on

high alert. the short-range missiles were fired just two days after the u.s. and its allies exposed iran's underground nuclear facilities. iran has since admitted to the site and claims it exists only to create nuclear energy, but u.s. officials estimate iran is one to five years away from being nuclear weapons ready. >> we don't believe that they can present convincing evidence that it's only for peaceful purposes, but we are going to put them to the test on october 1st. >> reporter: that's when the countries that make up the permanent members of the u.n. security council, plus employer many, will meet with iranian leaders. it will be the first direct negotiation wouldn't u.s. and iran in 30 years. the u.s. says iran must stop enriching uranium or face crippling sanctions. they expect russia will be on board but china's commitment is unclear. >> the iranians are in a very bad spot because of this deception. >> reporter: reaction is mixed. this man says he is proud of

a bus on the way to a church retreat ends up in a multivehicle pileup. at least 15 cars and trucks crashed outside of tampa. half a dozen people were rushed to hospitals with unknown injuries. the cause is still under investigation. cleanup shut down that busy interstate for hours today. florida police also

investigating the shooting deaths of a couple and their 13- year-old daughter. police in sunshine, florida made the discovery in a locked bedroom after responding to a domestic disturbance call. the family was originally from jamaica, and they lived with two other relatives in the home. they were not hurt. neighbors say they're shocked. >> i thought maybe it was an accident or something like that. >> oh, my god, yes, because i have a little chihuahua, and she would come out and pet the chihuahua, and i would give her treats, and what a beautiful little girl she was. they've been very quiet, no domestic violence whatsoever. the little girl is absolutely beautiful. >> as of tonight police are not officially labeling the deaths a double murder-suicide, although that is suspected. a stuping attack abe texas strip club. the whole thing was caught on tape. take a look when when a dancer walks up to another worker and zaps her with a stun gun. the waitress was shocked two more times in the face.

the club's manager says he fired the manager just moments before this confrontation. after years on the run, roman polanski is no longer a free man. he was arrested by swiss police when he flew into the country to attend a film festival. he now faces extradition to the u.s. accused of having sex with a 13-year-old girl. in tonight's healthwatch report, a happy ending after a woman is implanted with the wrong embryo. the ohio woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy, then handed over the baby to its biological parents. she realized the mistakes two months into her pregnancy. medical experts say mistakes like this are extremely rare. and tonight's eyewitness news pump watch, gas prices are dropping for the second straight week. the expected change is happening because of the season changing, and that leads to lower demand with fewer people taking road trips. right now the national average is $2.52 a gallon.

wjz continues monitoring gas prices in our area. today a gallon costs you $2.44. last month that same gallon cost you $2.56789 it is a deadly distraction for drivers, especially young ones, and this week state lawmakers are banning texting while driving. as gigi barnett explains, the tough part could be enforcing the law. >> reporter: on the highway -- >> there was a henry behind us, around they were right on our tail. she was texting and driving. >> reporter: at a red light. >> at a red light or something, why not. >> reporter: behind the wheel, text messages are sent and receive, but this week maryland will become one of 18 states that ban texting while driving. >> i do at lot, i'm not gonna lie. >> reporter: a aaa spokeswoman says texting is one of the most dangerous distractions for drivers. >> every time i go out. >> what is she snake. >> reporter: but drivers caught text willing receive more than

basically the last warm day we have tomorrow will be before our real autumn-like weather starts to move in. take a look at our temperatures. 55 the dew point, humidity 83%, winds from the west-southwest, currently calm, but they have been coming in, in the low range, 3 miles per hour, 30.20 actually is the barometer reading. right now we're looking at temperatures around the area. 6 2 in elkton. we do have temperatures around the immediate metro area, just around 60 degrees, 59 in bel air, 65 in annapolis. across the state, down at that time science center we're seeing a five miles per hour wind, that's coming in from the west-southwest, a bit of a southwesterly flow. that's going to help us stay in the warm zone tomorrow. temperatures are just in the mid 70-degree range, up to 80 south of the area. but we do after change. we have a front moving in the from the west, and that is going to bring in windy conditions. along with those winds we are going to see a chance for

showers in the afternoon, could be gusty thunderstorms at times, and after that front moves through tomorrow, temperatures stay in the 60s for the remainder of the week. good bit of sunshine and dry air in place, but it is going to definitely feel like october is knocking on the doorstep, which it will be, october starts on thursday. as a result of that front coming through, garrett county, under a wind advisory tomorrow, pretty much throughout the day. things are going to get pretty blustery throughout the afternoon. your sunrise tomorrow at 7:00, sunset at 6:54. southwest wind on the bay at 15 to 20 knots, gusting to 30. tonight, we get down to just around 56 degrees, partly cloudy, then a little patchy fog throughout the north and west suburbs. increasingly windy tomorrow with afternoon showers, but look at the temperature. 79 degrees our daytime high, then for the next five day, 68 and 68 for tuesday and wednesday, 66 and 66 for thursday and friday.
