used. that's a little hinky. >> reporter: but the pumpg line was no laughing matter. last night, cbs tv host david receier man revealed he had sex with some of his female employees and someone threatened it release a tell-all if he didn't pay $2 million. >> i had to testify before the grand jury and i lad to tell them how i was disturbed by this, i was worried for myself, i was worried for my family. >> reporter: after his testimony, police arrested the suspect. cbs says a male employee at the news program 48 houring otherwise has been charged. this isn't the first time he's been a target. about a increase 2000 5rks a man was arrested to for plotting to kidnap his son. his plans were to hold tim for ransom for $5 million. fans were shocked about this latest scandal, but gave letterman credit for breaking the news position. >> i would want the truth from him. >> honestly, it doesn't change my opinion of him because i love

his show. >> reporter: as for letterman, the show is exactly what he plans to focus on. >> it's been a very bizarre experience. i don't plan to say much more about this on this particular topic, so thank you for letting me bend your ear. >> reporter: he also thanked his family and friends for their support. the alleged blackmail attempt comes less than seven months after letterman married his long time girlfriend and mother of his 5-year-old son. in a full statement from cbs, cbs says it was made aware of and ongoing police investigation involving david letterman and an employee at "48 hours" who was subsequently arrested yesterday on charges of attempted grand larceny in the first degree. cbs is cooperating fully with the authorities and the employee has been suspended pend abouting the results of the investigation. mr. letterman addressed the issue during the show's broadcast last night and we believe his comments speak for themselves. this morning president obama is in copenhagen, denmark making a very special personal pitch

for his hometown to the international olympic committee. the decision on where the 2016 games will be held comes later today. cbs's charlie d'agata is in copenhagen with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the president and the first lady have finished their part of the presentation. the president just arrived this morning. he flew more than 4,000 miles for a ten minute speech. will it be enough? air force one land mis-copenhagen where president obama is hoping to land the 2016 olympic games for clig. >> we look forward to welcoming the world to the shores of lake michigan and the heartland of our nation in 2016. >> reporter: it's a whirlwind visit on behalf of the windy city and a first, no u.s. president before has led the presentation to host the games. >> i urge you to choose chicago. i urge you you to choose

america. >> reporter: rio de janeiro is the toughest challenger, it would be the first time the olympics were held in south america. madrid and tokyo are also in the running and either could pull off a surprise victory when the olympic committee votes later today. the odds of chicago winning soared when president obama decided to make the pitch here in person. he's seen as the captain of a team that's worked years for this moment. >> chicago is the best city in the united states. it's the friendliest city in the united states. it's the most diverse city in the united states. >> i wish the world all the best in terms of enjoying the games when they come to chicago because that's where it will be. >> reporter: president obama won't be here to hear the resul results. he'll be flying back home when the you winner is announced later this afternoon. now, there are cynics here who say the obama effect could backfire. he can't just waltz in here and waltz out before the winner is even announced. others say it could clinch the

deal. michelle shall. >> no matter what you do, there's always a critic. charlie d'agata, thanks. now for the frantic rescue effort in indonesia where it's fear that had thousands are buried following wednesday's definite investigation stating earthquake. through the nirt, rescue workers have been searching for victims on on the hart hit island of sumatra. the official death toll now stands at 715, but thousands are missing, feared buried beneath collapsed buildings including a hpt and schools. survivors are still being pulled from the rubble now more than 40 hours after the quake hit. in samoa and american samoa, the death toll rose to 169 from tuesday's devastating earthquake spawned tsunami about. the government wants to hold a mass funeral next week. many villages were completely wiped out. officials say the search for bodies could last for weeks. iran has agreed to allow international inspectors into its secretly built uranium enrichment plant. the deal was made yesterday during talks between iran and

six world powers including the united states. it's the first direct negotiations between the u.s. and iran in 29 years. besides giving access to its nuclear plant, iran said it would send some of its enriched uranium outside of the country to be turned in to to fuel. president obama called the talks constructive but warned his patience is not unlimited. >> we're committed to serious and meaningful engagement, but we're not interested in talking for the sake of talking. >> the underand five other world powers want to freeze iran's nuclear activities. more talking are planned later this month. just ahead on the morning news, michael jackson's autopsy shocker. plus, the grandmother who took on a wild bear and lived to tell about it. pollen.

was shocked to find a bear in her bedroom. she quickly fought back with the first weapon she could grab. >> and here was this this big bear. i was screaming and she went up on her hind feet and i grabbed one of these pillows and i just slung it at her. >> and it was good she did because it worked and the bear ran away. her son also spotted a bear cub inside the house. he tried to catch it, but ran into the much larger mother. the bears raided the kitchen before police drove them out with pellet guns. on the cbs "moneywatch," stocks in asia skidded lower this morning and ross palombo is here in new york with details. good morning. >> reporter: between morning. asian markets fell sharply this morning after yesterday's weak reports about u.s. jobs in manufacturing. the nikkei closed down 246 points. that came after wall street's dramatic ripple dimg et losses on thursday. the dow sank 203 points, the nasdaq dropped nearly 65, all of

this following news that first time unemployment claims rose even more than expected last week despite three weeks of declines. the official unemployment rate comes out later this morning and it's expected to rise. that overshadowed some more positive indicators. the commerce department says consumer spending shot up in august by the largest amount in eight years. and the number of contracts signed for previously owned homes also rose to the highest level in a year and a half. demand for new cars has slumped again. ford reports that sales dropped more than 5% in september compared to the year before. gm was down by 45%. chrysler sank 42%. we could have new reason to call it the information super highway this morning. a blue ribbon panel is recommending that broadband high speed internet be made available to all americans and it wants the government it pay for it. the new report urges lawmakers to make it the number one infrastructure priority in the country like the interstate

highway system once was. and further proof that toy makers are cutting prices this year. on the two biggest lists of hot holiday toys, there's only one priced over $100. but even so, sales this season are still expected to be down by about 1%, michelle. >> all right, ross palombo here in new york. thanks. there is some surprising news in an autopsy report on singer michael jackson. the report obtained by the ap says jackson was basically healthy before he died. it says his heart and internal organs were in good condition and he was in fine shape for a 50-year-old man. jackson's death has been declared a homicide caused by propofol and other drugs. you might have to weight longer than expected for a seasonal flu shot. major vaccine makers are running in to delays or cutting back shipments so they can keep up with demand for the h1n1 vaccine. the cdc says no need to worry, 70 million doses have already been delivered. the next wave may not arrive until november.

mean time, the h1n1 virus is giving businesses a major rope to be worried. the new survey says that the virus could cost u.s. companies billions of dollars. many are fighting back. here's alexis christoforous. >> reporter: front line workers in the fight against the flu know what it could cost if they don't roll up their sleeves. >> it's a matter of public health. >> reporter: and dr. leslie taylor expects to be back for another shot soon. >> because we'll have to get it twice, this one and the swine flu. >> reporter: but concerns have spread beyond hospitals and into the halls of corporate america. the chamber of commerce says seasonal flu take as $10 billion bite out of miss each year. h1n1 could gobble up a whopping $ $20 billion. at credit suisse, you you can see their readiness from the employee medical center to the elevator bank. >> we have the purell machine locate the like every time you turn a corner.

southwest shore line. later today, thunderstorms will be spreading across the appalachians. showers develop over interior sections of the northeast. it will remain chilly and wet around the great lakes and upper midwest and the plains will be cool and dry. it will be sunny and warm throughout the southwest. in sports, the rockies clinched their national league wild card birth. atkins drove in three runs in a 9-2 win over milwaukee. it was a remarkable turnaround for the rockies who fought their way back from a horrible start. this will be colorado's second postseason appearance in three years. in cincinnati, the nl central champion cards blew away the reds. pitcher chris carpenter hit a grand slam and won his 17th game. st. louis beats the reds 13-0. in sdroilt, cabrera drove in these runs as the tigers and twins go down to the wire in the american league central division. the twins avoided wlim nation with an 8-3 win over the tigers. detroit leads the twins by two

♪ hold my hand... million from him. the man threatened to reveal that letterman had sexual relationships with female employees. and president obama landed in copenhagen this morning to pitch his hometown of chicago to the international olympic committee. their decision comes later today. and while we wait it find out which city will host those games, london's preparations for the 2012 summer olympics are well under way. but the economy in london has the city, the olympic athletes there, feeling the pinch. here's amy guttman. >> reporter: countdown to the london olympics has begun. but as officials tick off the months and weaks to 2012, they're also counting the pennies. corporate sponsors hit by the crunch rnkts renewing deals. british athletes are the losers. great britain's water polo team and seven other sports suffered the most.

olympic officials here used a commercial logic, making the biggest cuts in those teams least likely to win a medal. it's especially hard for part-time teacher, craig. lon it ton 2012 will be the 31-year-old team captain's last games. his last chance for a medal. craig gave up a lot to move here and play water polo for england. he left a pro position with good pay and perks. but now there's barely enough money for training time in the pool. they now practice just once a day at the national aquatic center in manchester. half of craig's teammates have abandoned the uk for europe, dashing any hopes of a british medal. investment was hard to win in 1948 when london last hosted the olympics. 64 years later, for some teams, victory in medals and money will
