decomposing body found at the bottom of a baltimore city sewer. good evening everyone i'm denise koch. >> and i'm vic carter. >> the investigation is ongoing. a decomposing body was removed and taken to the coroners office. >> reporter: officials hope that the information they get here will tell them who she is, how she died and when. police statistics for crime in this neighborhood aren't available tonight. but residents are usually more critical if there is a problem. >> robbery, murders, rapes happen here. >> no, not in this neighborhood. >> reporter: so that makes what happened here all the more puzzling. workers for the telephone company opened up this manhole,

what they found below will turn a stomach. >> once they opened the manhole cover, and gained entry the hole was filled with a 6-foot of water and it was actually a body appears to be of a male victim, decomposed. >> reporter: it wasn't until later that they realized it was a woman. before homicide and the coroner's office can do their job, the fire department has to figure out how to get the body out. they begin by draining the water then going down the hole. >> we have a team here, they will make access to the hole. make contact with the body, secure it in a basket and simply bring it out. >> reporter: when officers get a better look, here is what they can tell. >> at this time, we believe it's an unidentified female. however, there's signs of decomposition, so the remains are going to be taken to the medical examiners office. >> reporter: until they get the

results of the autopsy, police can't say how long that woman's body had been decomposed in that hole. neighbors can't imagine something like that happening in their neighborhood. >> in this neighborhood, i would have never imagined. >> reporter: though tomorrow is saturday, police say the medical examiners will be hard at work and possibly they will get some information about her demise as soon as tomorrow. mike shoe, denise back to you. identifying the body may be a problem due to the large amount of decomposition. a 17-year-old boy is in critical condition tonight after being shot in the head. the shooting happened around 7:30 near the intersection of west lafayette in west baltimore. homicide detectives are investigating the incident because of the injuries of the

teen. late tonight, police released these photos. in connection with the case, investigators say they are trying to identify the man seen here. he was last seen driving this green ford taurus near light street last week. police say a man broke into a home on franklin street, raped a woman at knife point and on september 23rd. anyone with information should call police. the h1n1 vaccine is on its way to maryland tonight, but it's not coming soon enough for worried parents. local er's are being swarmed by parents who worry their children have the h1n1 flu. >> reporter: filling energy rooms across maryland, doctors warn you may need another kind of vaccine to stay safe. >> i'm scared to death about this virus. >> reporter: david matthews has a 4-year-old with flu like symptoms. he's worried his 2-year-old

will too, like hundreds of parents, matthews rushed them to the emergency room. >> i'm hearing stories about two little girls just died in schools near where we lived. and it's sad man, because it acts like a cold, next thing you know they are deathly sick. >> reporter: 15 to 20% of the union memorial er is filled with patients concerned they have the h1n1 flu which may do more harm than good. >> you also run the risk of getting the flu if you're coming to the emergency room. because there are many patients here that do have it right now. >> contracting the flu, whether it's seasonal or h1none weakens the person's immune system, making it harder for it to attack the body. which is why you may want to get another vaccine this flu season. that infection can lead to a

information from the cdc log on to wjz.com. a bizarre accident at the memorial accident today. car somehow became wedged in an entry way just before 4:30. no serious injuries were reported. >> the baltimore officer dragged five city blocks from a suspect's car is out of the hospital tonight. the officer is not being identified. police say he was reaching into the suspect's car and trying to get the keys and that's when the suspect drove off dragging the officer. investigators are still searching for that suspect. we are learning new information tonight about that extortion case surrounding late night talk show host david letterman. tonight we know the suspect is a producer at cbs's 48 hours. the show specializing in true crime stories. drew levingson has the latest

it is 64 degrees with light rain in the area tonight. in indonesia this woman is one of the few survivors found underneath the rubble in indonesia. this discovery reenergized searchers to keep looking for survivors. the father of elizabeth smart speaks out after his daughter testified about the abuse she suffered at the hands of her alleged abductor mitchell. he says he was unaware of some of the details his daughter revealed in court.

>> you have to know that people are going to take opportunity. >> reporter: lunsford is also charged with threat. stealing an expensive watch from a drug dealer. a gold medallion and tiffany jewelry. they also confiscated a leafy substance in a bag, viles of liquid and needles. he says, quote there is a legitimate explanation and hopefully the truth will come out in court. the case against the drug detective comes about when an informant tells the fbi lunsford has given them money for information, then has taken back half in cash. >> 99.9% of law enforcement officers are just as outraged about these allegations as we

region. not too heavy but they moved pretty much through baltimore already. up to north-northeast. and a little batch from cumberland down to west virginia. that's really our only chance of getting showers. 72 today. that was a high. a little warmer than it's been. and that is normal. last night 51, our average is now 50. the record is 89 and 35 on this day. right now we're 64, 69 out in oakland. some showers just heading out there. 62 the dewpoint, it's up pretty high. we had a lot of rain earlier today. particularly the great lakes up toward minnesota, wisconsin and we had a tiny bit of wet snow out here in west dakota. for us the warm air came in

this afternoon with a few clouds and a sprinkle or two early on. then the clouds kind of build and we saw some showers this evening throughout the region. southern ontario, quebec. a few more sprinkles and showers. a line here in west virginia. that's what we have to watch over the next several hours. once this front moves through overnight. looks like tomorrow, we could see sun in the morning. we expect to see showers, milder temperatures with the west wind. looks like an awfully nice weekend and early next week, continued pretty nice weather. bay temp about 68 degrees. what's left a little bit of rain mainly. maybe one more shower by morning, 59 tomorrow. 75 by afternoon with a lot of sunshine. looks like a really decent afternoon, sunday more sun, 75.
