captions by: caption colorado, llc (800) 775-7838 e- mail: good evening, everyone. thanks for joining us. i'm adam may. coming out of california, breaking news where a 6.5 magnitude earthquake rocked northern parts of that state. we also just got in footage of the seismograph machine measuring the strength of the quake. it struck off the coast of northern california shaking buildings south of the oregon border. power has been knocked out to several coastal communities. so far, only minor property damage has been reported such as a broken windows, fallen chimneys and snapped sewer lines. several people in a shopping mall in eureka received minor injuries from broken glass but

so far, those appear to be the worst. we'll keep you updated. one week after a security scare at newark liberty airport, the man behind that breach has been released from custody. tonight, he's only facing a minor fine, triggering outrage. karen brown reports for wjz from new jersey with the latest. >> reporter: haisong jiang faced the glare of the media outside a newark police station. the last time he was at the airport, the 28-year-old doctoral student dodged security and snuck into the terminal to walk his girlfriend to a gate. a week late every, many passengers are nervous about the security breach. >> it does give you pause when you think that something hike that could happen at a major hub like new work where things should be at a higher level. >> reporter: jiang will an rained and faces a -- will be arraigned and faces a fine. some are demanding a stiffer penalty. >> we want to strengthen that

brown, wjz "eyewitness news." >> and the maximum fine for the incident is $500 right now. another terrifying event in the sky. this time for airtran passengers. the transportation security administration says a flight en route from atlanta to san francisco had to be diverted to colorado springs because of an unruly passenger. pictures of him snapped here by other passengers. a man locked himself in the bathroom and what he did next was very frightening. >> just an unruly passenger. came out the bathroom with no socks and ?o shoes with a razer in his hand and had everybody spooked. >> the man was tasered. he went limp and they took him out. >> bomb sniffing dogs and officers searched the entire mane. no explosives or evidence of terrorism were found after a three-hour delay, then the plane was cleared to continue on to san francisco. tonight, we're also learning new details in the deadly attack against cia

members in afghanistan. the director of the group says the jordannian man that killed the seven agents was about to be searched prior to the explosion. the bomber was cultivated by the cia in the fight against al qaeda but apparently was working as a double agent. the cia director says the suicide bombing is a stark reminder that the u.s. is still at war. it's been a year in the making but tonight senator harry reid has apologized to president barack obama for making racist comments during the presidential race. the senate democratic leader said obama could win the election because hes with "light skinned and did not have a negro dialect." reid released a statement sincerely apologizing for offending any and all americans especially african-americans for improper comments. he is currently seeking reehecation in the state of alabama. maryland lawmakers are looking for tougher laws following the abduction and murder of an 11-year-old girl on the eastern shore. suzanne colins is live with a

look at some of the possible proposals. suzanne? >> reporter: adam, the man charged in the abduction of sarah fox had already been convicted of sexually abusing two other girls. now that lawmakers are headed back to annapolis, they are considering a bill to keep someone like that locked up. sarah foxwell's body was found days after being take be from her bed overnight. he dated the girl's aunt, who was her legal guardian. leggs had been convicted twice in the past with sexual child abuse. >> if we lose one child to murder that's one too many in our state. whenever these things happen, it inspires all of us to ask one another, what can we do? what are the additional things that we can do to better safeguard the lives of our children. >> reporter: he thinks hawmakers will debate a slew of bills hoping to vee prevent something similar in the future. >> i'm sure we will revisit the notion of periods of civil

commitment after criminal stens are completed. >> reporter: right now when a child sex offender served its full sentence, the state can do no more. there's talk that civil laws could be used to commit a person proven still dangerous to children to a mental health facility. the head of the nonprofit that advocates against child sex abuse says laws are important but alert family members are the best protection. >> explain to your children that strangers are not the biggest danger, that oftentimes we know that people who know the child pose the greatest risk to them. >> reporter: two years ago, maryland passed jessica's law. the sponsor says inmates get good time credits in prison, also known as diminution. >> that wouldn't have prevented this case from happening,

sadly. >> reporter: and one delegate has already prefiled a bill to prevent a sexual molester of children from agreeing to a plea bargain in return for getting two sentences served multly. adam? >> we'll keep an eye on that, suzanne. thank you. the supreme court has upheld civil commitments of sex offenders in other state where's it's been challenged in court. anne arundel county police are investigating an accident tonight that involved one of their own. at 5:00 this evening, an officer was conducting a routine traffic stop when an intoxicated motorist struck the officer. he did remain at the scene. the officer was transported to shock trauma with what are said to be nonlife threattening injuries. in 26 days, baltimore city will swear in stephmy rawlings- blake after the current mayor sheila dixon announces her resignation. rawlings-blake says she is more than prepared to assume her new position.

>> i'm so glad that stephanie rawlings-blake is here, our mayor to be. >> reporter: praise for city council president and future mayor stephanie rawlings-blake. she, along with senator barbara mikulski and fred bealefeld were honored at a breakfast at martins west. >> we know that this is a tough time in our city and a time of transition, but as both a member of the delegation and the senior member of the delegation, we pledge absolute support. the mayor and the next several weeks and years coming ahead. >> reporter: this as the council president prepares for her new position, meeting this week with commissioner beale field and fire chief black. what do you foresee is your biggest problem in backing mayer? >> the budget. >> reporter: she also cites public safety as a priority.

windows down. maybe a little bit of good news for us tonight, bern? >> that's right. the end is in sight. we have a couple of days of cold weather to deal with. we have a warm-up coming our way later in the week. the doppler radar is not happening. we're down to 25 degrees. it's in the teens in a hot of the region. tomorrow, the cold air will dominate the forecast. we'll have sunshine and highs struging to get to 30. you see with the windchill around, it will feel like the teens for most of us. we'll let you know when this is coming and what the forecast will be for tomorrow. adam? >> can't come soon enough. an early morning fire is under investigation in northwest baltimore. the home was occupied but everyone escaped without injury. firefighters say the fire appears to have started in a second floor bedroom. a mother and daughter

barely escape when the two were filling the kerosene heater when it exploded. take a look at the home. the county firefighter was also hurt battling the blaze. officials are warning people not to use kerosene heaters unless the area is properly ventilated. a man posing as a fire inspector has many business owners on high alert. montgomery county police say he's gained full access to six businesses in the area. they caught him on surveillance cameras. he carries a flashlight and a tool belt to convince victims. police are warning to make sure that if someone claims to be an official, ask for identification and a badge. coming up, chaos in hong kong when someone drops a bottle of acid into a crowd injuring more than a dozen people. a desperate call for help for the very first time.

soferl people are recovering after being attacked with acid injuring 15 people. some of the victims included tourists. those burned were rushed to local hospitals. that's been a series of attacked since december 2008 injuring more than 100 people. turning to milwaukee where a man was caught on tape early. look at that. a molotov cocktail inside a gas station convenience store. a man was wearing a hockey mask and threw the fire bomb at safety glass barely missing a customer. police are searching for the suspect. they believe he could be connected to a group of juveniles. they were arrested for robbing the same gas station in 2007. a 911 call made by brittany murphy's mother was released on friday and now reveals how her family tried to save her life the morning that she died.

have caused problems for home sales but they rose in the baltimore area in 2009. the baltimore sun says sales increased by 3%. the downsize is the average sale price fell 9% compared to 2008. many economists say sales picked up due to the $8,000 first-time home buyer credit. baltimore is halfway through the traditional flu season that typically ends in april. as gee gentlemen barnett explains, doctors are hosting h1n1 flu clinics anticipating a boost in patients. >> reporter: the h1n1 flur clinic in southwest baltimore works on a first come. >> we had people here about an hour before we were supposed to start. >> reporter: first served basis. >> it's a different bug. >> reporter: doctors say it's unpredictable. that's why many hospitals are keeping strict visitation restrictions to protect patients and workers. >> at this point, we still have

visitor limitations in place. we're still asking visitors to not come in if they are less than 18 years of age. >> reporter: jennifer and her father got the shot this weekend. previously, doctors urged pregnant women, children and health workers to get the shot. now it's open for everyone. >> i have young grandchildren so i didn't want to get it and have a chance of infecting them and their parents. >> reporter: doctors say h1n1 didn't behave like the seasonal flu. it actually goes into the year and that's why doctors are expecting to see another wave of h1n1 patients soon. >> is it still sirblg lating? we're encouraging people to come, be vaccinated and protected against -- >> because hospitals and clinic as cross the state have a steady supply of h1n1 now. >> we are blessed with abundant h1n1 vaccines. you know that initial trickle to really a good sized river.

right now, we are flushed with h1n1 vaccines. >> reporter: in southwest baltimore, i'm gee jea barnett, wjz "eyewitness news." also in tonight's wjz healthwatch a in you study proves that the soda you get from a soda fountain may not be as clean as you think. researchers from hollins university tested 90 drinks from 30 different fountains based on the 48% were contaminated with fecal bacteria. it's not known whether the bacteria came from people with dirty hands or unclean fountains. experts say drinking soda from a contaminated fountain could cause stomach new-like symptoms. the risk you have to take because that's gross. it is bad. you have to clean that stuff, you know? >> that's just a gross story. let's move on from there. >> the weather's gross, too. >> it is right now. at least we don't have anything coming out of the ski. we'll have sunshine tomorrow but the cold air is going to continue for the next few days. we're going to get to that in a

moment. today, though, 33 degrees. we were above freezing but 41 is the high. and on january 1st, we did hit that average before temperatures fell in the afternoon. we've been way below since then. we're coming in at 25 degrees in baltimore, 12 degrees in oakland. there's not much of a wind going on outside. not like the last round but with the wind factored in, it feels like it's in the teens for almost all of us out there right now. it's a cold one out there. bundle up if you are headed out tonight or earl i had tomorrow morning. after we get through the next few days, this cold air's going to flush itself out. at this point, below zero in the pink areas, we did get above above zero and back down below. we're below zero for quite a few hours here. 23 degrees in dallas. 28 new orleans and take a look at this here. 38 degrees in miami. so yes, a lot of the country's dealing with the cold air. it's not just us. the thing is, though, that's another storm out here still to our west not much to it.

that's what we're going to deal with. until that happened, though, it's the cold dominating the forecast. tomorrow sunshine highs struggling to get to 30 degrees. we stay in the 30s monday and tuesday as the next storm come oz you are way. monday night into tuesday, as soon as it clears us and heads out to sea. we have a warm-up coming midweek. out on the waters, small craft advisory's in effect because the winds pick up during the day tomorrow once again. making the wind chile feel colder. tonight, going down to 15 degrees. tomorrow we will struggle to get to 30 for our high. the thing is, take a look. it's not as bad as it could be up in foxboro. 24 degrees for a game time temperature. windchill in the teens. we've seen them below zero farther west. at least we're not having that for the game itself. after tomorrow, though, take a look at how temperatures climb up. we're in the 30s again monday and tuesday and flurries possible monday night into early tuesday. after that, we're up to 42 on
